Caps 'Alum' Brendan Morrison Off to a Great Start
Brendan Morrison is off to a great start for the Flames this year, leading his team with 9 points. I was always a fan of Morrison's style and was hoping that the Caps would keep him for another year. I would have much preferred to let Flash walk or trade his rights as an RFA this summer, letting Morrison mentor the young centers in the organization while playing on the 2nd or 3rd lines. Here's the blurb from the CBC Sports article:
"Morrison factor
I feel that a key ingredient to the Flames' recent success has been putting Brendan Morrison on the point on the power play. This move by the coaching staff has allowed them to keep Robyn Regehr fresh and away from the power play. That means he gets used primarily in his shutdown role.
Morrison has arguably been one of the best Flames this season, if not the most consistent. He leads the team in scoring with nine points, one point ahead of Rene Bourque, who has been outstanding of late. Morrison has also played on three different lines so far. His ability to play centre, wing, penalty kill and the power play has given Brent Sutter a lot of options.
This veteran has found his stride early and Flames fans hope that he his success on the point on the power play lasts all season!"
Even though he isn't playing for us anymore, I hope that he can continue at this pace for the rest of the season.

He can’t. See 2009-10.

Right. If he couldn’t do it at his absolute peak between Naslund and Bertuzzi, there’s no chance he can do it on the 2nd PP unit and 2nd line of the Flames, unless he’s the luckiest player in the NHL for the last decade.

Fair enough, but about about this hypothetical question:
You can have either BMo or Flash at their current salary points. Let’s assume that both will start the season hot and trail off a bit at the end. Also assume that Flash is good for ~10 more points. Who would you really rather have?
I think that BMo works harder, is better defensively, and has a lot to offer guys like MJ90 and MP85 as they develop. He could have started the year at 2C and then moved down a line as one of the younger guys grew into that role. And if they BOTH developed well, for less than 1mil he would have been a great spare part to have in the arsenal even if he wasn’t playing every night.
he’s a single assist ahead of where he was last year. 3 goals and 5 assists thru 9 games while rocking the red (you know, back when we were all thinking it was the best bargain bin signing ever).

For the price the Flames picked BMo up for, I’d say even if he doesn’t keep up this level of production, its still all gravy for them. I liked him on the Caps and wouldn’t have minded if we were able to keep him at a bargain price.
The few times we had him at point on the power play it seemed to click pretty well. He was great at keeping the puck in the zone once the pp got settled. Something Ov and Green both seem to have problems doing.
