Good looks on the DCU mention. Not afraid to say I got a little verklempt down there last night.
Because he's class, and you're not.
MLS put together a jaime career highlight reel a few days ago, for those who haven’t seen. oh the bleach blonde days…

It would have been cool to be there for the game. End of an era.

Fun game, would have preferred the 3-2 win but nice to see these guys performing so well in OT.
Does Flashes goal mean he’s back on the second line? :)
Mp85 and Mj90 have looked great in that second center spot.
Thank god we have a 2nd line right now ‘cause the first hasn’t been getting it done.
Not too happy about Gordon still being scratched.

I hope not. I want MP or Mackan on the second for Semin. That second line has looked so promising. Good for Semin for finally breaking out. And that the team didn’t waste his hat trick on a loss like they did last season. MP was like a whirling dervish last night. Great fun to watch.
Maybe now teams will have to focus on lines other than the first for a change. That might open up more opportunities for Ovi, Nicky, and Knubes.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

Well can you at least guarantee fifty?

Just wanted to say I fully support the DSabs nickname. :p
I have a twitter.
Not another Capitals blog!

It was rather interesting to listen to Semin answering questions before they were translated for him.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Since it seems he knows English pretty well now, hiding behind a translator must be something that he uses to keep the masses at a distance, for whatever his reason.
"It's always good to have vikings."
But, but, but he’s shy! Guess it’s hard to avoid the media when he gets a hat trick.

understanding English and speaking it are two different things. we should be more happy with this arrangement than him trying to express himself with limited vocabulary
His vocabulary is just fine. He missed a great opportunity. Coming out of the language closet on the night he scored a hat trick would’ve been a good choice.

Without hearing more from Sasha, it’s hard to know how he’d do formulating his responses in English. From my own experience in Quebec, my French is fairly good, but if I’m under pressure (like when I was trying to make sure I understood the directions to get back to the airport in traffic through a complicated traffic pattern), I may respond in English, even if I understand the French and the person speaking to me understands my English.
Don’t make fun of my obsession over ketchup dispensers ever again! ;) Ted Leonsis
I think you are right, who are we to know how comfortable Semin is answering in English to the press, who overanalyze every word people say. I recall reading a Russian interview of him this summer/beginning of the season and he said he didn’t feel comfortable talking to the press in English. At least he’s talking to the press. We sit fairly close to the ice (about 15 rows up) near the caps bench and I watch him during games, he talks to a lot of guys that aren’t Russian. Although Varly did say in an interview that Semin and Ovie speak to him in Russian on the ice.
I could have sworn reading that he did talk to reporters in English awhile back till he was quoted as saying something disparaging about a fellow Russian which he apparently meant not to.
My guess is he’s just the same sort of guy as Ricky Williams. Superstar who never embraced the personality required when you’re that talented.

I agree it would have been a good opportunity for him to speak in English to the press, and therefore the rest of us. After he spoke in English just a little bit at the end of that CSN clip last season where he had been helping kids skate, I thought he might just venture a ittle further this season. Of course, there’s still plenty of time. Maybe a less-pressurized one-on-one taped interview would be better than a post-game interview.
I thought it was funny in the post-gamer he said he did not like the Juice Boy game and does not play it usually. He did on Friday after practice, but I have rarely seen him do it. Ovi lost to Backs in the end.
I’m just waiting for that dream day when we finally win the Cup and out of nowhere Sasha grabs a mic and busts out of his shell to start interviewing everyone on the team in English. It would be amazing.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

“It was my decision, he knows why and I’ve discussed it with him,” MacLean said. “That’s it.”
Good grief I wonder what’s up between Kovy and MacLean, especially as his teammates are just as baffled.

That’s not going to end well for MacLean. If he hasn’t already lost the team (that would be quite an accomplishment after less than ten games, wouldn’t it?), he’s going to soon.
"It's always good to have vikings."
So true. I’m trying to imagine what personal stuff is going on between them and that quote is like adding fuel to a fire. Just does not look good for the team. There is something to be said for maintaining discretion.

I’m guessing DJ King will be in the lineup the next time we play Atlanta.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
King’s been HS’d so often, I’m wondering if GMGM put him on the roster in spite of BB’s wishes. Odd.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Really?
Caps have played 8 games.
DJ King – 3 games.
Boyd Gordon – 4 games.
One seems pretty normal relative to the skill\role of the player and the other seems Odd.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
Am I wrong or did Buff play F almost exclusively for the Hawks last year? I know he has played D in the past but I was surprised to see him on D last night.
A really dumb play to run Neuvy when you have a lead like that.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
From Vogs’ game notes:
Fleischmann logged just 10:02 in ice time on Saturday, and needed his lone overtime shift (eight seconds in duration) to get over the 10-minute mark on the night.

Gotta admit that’s an interesting statistic for the teacher’s pet.

But look at how efficient he was with his limited time! His GON/60 is off the charts! Just think how great he’d be if his ice time would be increased!

YNC’s snark is just fine. she took advantage of a great opportunity. YNC coming out of the snark closet on the same day she put together a great set of clips was a good choice.

I know this is asking a bit much, but does anyone have the stats for last night’s game that might show some of the regression of Chimera and Fehr? I’ve seen some chatter that Flash pretty much screwed their stats over while on their line last night.
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
I’ll have to study it further in further detail. In any case, the performance of the team’s third line has been brutal this year. I know Johansson had also gotten off to a slow start this year which hasn’t helped their statistics at all. (But then MarJo got a goal when moved up to the 2nd line.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
Check out the Corsi/Fenwick link in the Game Recap. Fehr and Chimera are typically pretty good in Corsi/Fenwick, and their stats over the last two games with Flash as their center have been brutal, while Laich and Semin’s numbers have improved with the removal of Flash from their line.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I wonder if anyone has ever considered a situation in which Flash might be traded to another team?
You had me at no problem.
Flash is a Fenwick/Corsi black hole and has been for years, against mediocre competition.
And that was on the wing, with less defensive responsibility than he’s had at C.

The complete inability to win a faceoff can’t be helping his cause.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Did it look like Matty Perreault was cheating his ass off on the dot because he knew if he got kicked out, Laich is at least competent on the dot? If that didn’t occur to Flash, I’m kind of wondering why the hell not?

I’ve always felt that if you’re not great in the dot, you might as well cheat. If you get tossed, no loss since Laich is a bit better than a coinflip. Crosby cheats with his positioning and you can see how dominant he is now on faceoffs.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.
I think a lot of great centers are great on the dot because they are also great cheaters. In other words, you’d better be cheating at least a bit.

if you’re not cheating on the dot, you’re not trying hard enough.

Fehr and Chimera are typically pretty good in Corsi/Fenwick
And yet the Corsi numbers for both Fehr and Chimera are worse than Flash’s for the season thus far.
by Yoshietree on Oct 24, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Chimera and Fehr also start a much smaller percentage of their shifts in the offensive zone and a much higher percentage in the defensive zone and they both finish more frequently in the offensive zone, while Flash finishes more often in the defensive zone.
The team’s moving backwards when Flash is on the ice and forward while the other two are on the ice.
Beyond all that, Flash has been a poor performer in terms of puck possession/Corsi his entire career with the Caps, whereas Fehr in particular has been outstanding. In a small sample size, I’m going to give Fehr and Chimera the benefit of the doubt.

via Tim Leone, Nylander suffered a season-ending injury last night
http://php.democratandchronicle.com/blog/sports2/
"It's always good to have vikings."
Injured playing against the team he was loaned to last season… irony or was it personal?
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I logged in to post as I had been waiting for Kevin O to update his blog about Nylander’s injury and I was disappointed to see this post. It sounds serious given it is a neck injury and surgery is scheduled for Monday. Hopefully the surgery is a success and his recovery uneventful.
To address the comment since it was posted: “He appeared to jam his right wrist when he was smooshed into the boards near the right corner by defenseman Brendan Smith.” (Brendan Smith is a rookie dman who was playing college hockey last season.)
Injured playing against the team he was loaned to last season… irony or was it personal?
Neither irony or personal. More like tragic. Nylander was a very popular player when he was with the Griffins last year.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I would still call it irony, and I doubted it was personal – it was just odd that it would be THAT team. It’s never good to see a player take that kind of injury.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Because it was the team he was at last season. No other reason.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
That isn’t irony. It’s coincidence.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
That sounds just awful. Nylander may have been a poor fit on the Caps as a player but, as a man and a person, he should be in all our prayers.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Reading the description of the play is weird… it seems as though he acted like it was his shoulder. Unless the neck injury affected the nerves in the arm. If it’s even half as bad as it sounds, I think his career is over.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Oh, Michael. You didn’t deserve this. How very unfortunate.
His season was getting off to a great start too. He had a couple of really good games recently, I think a four-point night just this week.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
oh no, how awful. He’s one of those guys that deserved (in the cosmic sense) better than the hand he’s been dealt these past couple of years, and certainly deserves better than a potentially career ending neck injury.
“Best wishes and speedy recovery” doesn’t really convey how much I’m pulling for him right now.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
If I were grading the Caps this week (well at least my grades are more positive after last night’s game than otherwise), here’s what they’d get.
Up Arrows: Johansson (for his 1st goal), Chimmer, Semin, Perreault, Laich
Down Arrows: Ovi, Knuble, Backstrom, Fehr, Stecks, Schultz,
Even: Varly (but considering giving him a Injury rating), Neuvirth (similar)
