So I was traveling most of the day yesterday. Catch me up please.
83 and 85 are called up. I know 15 was already hurt. What was the talk yesterday as far as whom these guys are replacing in the lineup? Perhaps we need to wait for practice? Maybe 83 isn’t playing center?

So the rhetorical question of the morning (until morning skate at least) is who sits tonight? I assume the easy call is D.J. King, but who else?
"It's always good to have vikings."
Hopefully. I’m not sure he was worth a bag of pucks having watched him fail miserably on his forecheck.

We can assume 15 sits. 26 and 10 could still be hurt. 17, as you write, is another easy choice.
22-19-8
28-14-21
25-90-16
83-85-26
That would sit 15,10,17 and 39. I just don’t see him playing 85 and 39 together, unless another center sits. I could be wrong. I think Beagle has played wing before, but I don’t recall 85 playing wing. I could be wrong on that also.

26 practiced yesterday, including on the 2nd PP unit, so I’d assume he’s not hurt enough to not play, otherwise I would have thought the same. My guess also would be 39, but 85 really isn’t a fourth liner, although he did spark the fourth line last year. Actually, a line of 83-85-26 could be interesting.
"It's always good to have vikings."
You’ve hit on the same dilemma I had. 85 isn’t a traditional 4th line center. But then again, we could use his energy, I think. Push on some of the other guys.

I just hope Johansson isn’t hurt. I noticed he left practice early yesterday and did not work on the PP at all. I think Beagle has played wing in the past when Semin was out. If Johansson is hurt, BB might slot MP on 2 just to see what happens initially and keep Flash on 3. Or he might have it the opposite. Sure wish we knew what was up with Gordo.
A little OT, but does anyone else have a really hard time reading the blogs that are black with white, red, and blue letters, such as KoL and BtGL above? I am still seeing negative images. I wish they would change them to black on white.
Here’s Corey from yesterday
Marcus Johansson left practice early for the #Caps, but he said he was fine afterwards.

Now Corey is tweeting that MJ90 is not at practice. Bummer.
That would slot 85 between 25 and 16, I guess.

I wonder if this also about injecting some energy into the lineup and waking up some of the vets.

Good morning CP!
I’m hopeful that you are correct. I’d like to see 85 out there instead of 39. What’s the harm in putting him on the 4th line with 83 and 26. Nothing at all. Would be fun.

MP is a playmaker, but 21-14-28 did well in the first week. Maybe coach is hoping to re-create some of the magic that 25-85-16 created in the Duchesne Cup.

The right emotion is “determined,” if you ask me. They should be determined never to have slow playoff starts or lose game 7s. They are plenty determined when trailing a series, but not so much given the chance to close it out. The elimination game for the opponent is often cited as the hardest game to win, and thus far the Capitals are 1-5 over the last 3 years.
Of all the pieces I managed to read thus far (great set of links) I find myself nodding in agreement most with RLS. I wasn’t too sure about the whole “angry” theme and prefer his “determined.” I don’t want to watch an angry team. They have to enjoy what they are doing, and they need to stay in moment, one game at a time. I don’t want Ovi and the Caps to go through the season feeling only anger. I want them to keep the joy and closeness that has been one of the cornerstones of their team identity.
I also agree with him about the importance of the regular season: to develop and hone good habits as well as finding their determined attitude when finishing off an opponent.
These damn injuries make it hard to feel determination as opposed to frustration though.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

I think I’m pretty well done with the “team slogan on a t-shirt on the first day of training camp” routine. The only slogan necessary should be “Washington Capitals.”

I was impressed with the “I trust my teammates, I trust myself” motto from Micheal Young, Texas Rangers all time hit leader. (I think the interviewer said it was on the wall of the Texas dugout, and asked about it.) Since Bruce is evidently (after about three years) still trying to convince his players to “take the high road”, I have to wonder if the team needs to take some of Mr. Young’s message to heart.
“It’s back and forth and it’s trying to convince the players that [they should be thinking], ‘Oh, I know I’ve got a chance [to skate the puck in] on this but I’ve got to take the high road and dump it in and change.’ Rather than go up there [into the attack zone] and then all of a sudden you’re going, ‘Oh man, now I’ve got to go back [check] because we didn’t score. It’s a work in progress, but I’m pretty confident that it’s going to get better.” – Bruce Boudreau on his team’s propensity for taking lengthy shifts, 10/22/10
Don’t make fun of my obsession over ketchup dispensers ever again! ;) Ted Leonsis
The Caps should take lessons from the Texas Rangers on how to do things, including come back from adversity. The Rangers started off that series by losing a game where they got off to a big lead and blew up. Next day, they came back and won. And then won 2 more in a row.
Rocking the Red since 1975
I hadn’t read what preceded it before I posted. In this case, my laziness may have been a good thing, since I decided I’d better count to about 1,000 before asking whether this ranks above or below the “we ran into a hot goalie” in excuses.
"The problem with our team when it comes to shift lengths is there is so much up and down flow. When you have a lot of whistles, it’s easy to get [regular] shift lengths because every 30 seconds there seems to be a whistle. But there are less whistles in our games than in anybody else’s games. It’s back and forth
No, I’ve never coached or played on a hockey team, but it seems blindingly obvious to me that, if you know there’s up and down flow and don’t get a lot of whistles, you either figure out how to manage shift lengths when there’s up and down flow, or you figure out how to get more whistles. And you use practice time to work on whatever you decided to do.
Don’t make fun of my obsession over ketchup dispensers ever again! ;) Ted Leonsis
The big lesson about the Rangers is acquire Cliff Lee at the trading deadline. A lot of these other things do matter, but a team is basically as strong as its ace. “Claw” and “hook” and all that stuff are nice. But Cliff Lee is the backbone of that team. He beat David Price twice and has been lights out the whole postseason.
The wait for 10/7 begins. This man is focused. Are you?
We keep asking this – does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on with Gordon?
Boudreau, when asked if Boyd Gordon was injured and not a suspension or family leave: “He’s healthy – we just decided to rest him.”
Bruce Boudreau said Boyd Gordon will be on the ice Monday for practice for the #Caps.
"It's always good to have vikings."
This is mysterious. Gordo was at Six Flags on Monday, right? Anyone who saw him think anything was amiss? Is there some internal disciplinary issue? Hard to imagine, but if he’s not injured, why would they rest an able body who does good work on the PK (and after last game, we need it!)?
Agreed. Especially given the timing of him being “rested” when we have other forwards hurting, like Bradley. This “resting” has gone on entirely too long. I can understand one day off for a rest but three?
If there’s some kind of “mental burnout” issue going on, I would expect it to happen near the end of the season or even during the playoffs, but early season.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Not to mention that 3 days is an awfully long time for an internal discipline to be taking place.
Rocking the Red since 1975
And if there’s some family reason (is Gordo married or anything?), simply saying “a family reason” usually shuts us all up!
I’m really hoping MJ can work out as the 2C eventually, but already he does not have the physical fortitude of his fellow Swede missing 2 games of 8 if he’s indeed out tonight.
I think Gordon is married, not sure about kids.
Good point that MJ might have injury issues. I give him a pass on the first game he missed, he hurt his foot blocking a shot. But then again Nicky had Ovie’s shot hit his foot and then score a goal and didn’t seem any worse for the wear. I’ll guess we’ll just have to watch and see if this is a trend for MJ.
I’ll admit I have no idea whether BG is married or has kids. But back when Theodore had “issues” last year, it was about him and his wife still having a hard time dealing with the death of their baby that summer. Nothing worse than the death of a child.
On Johansson’s injury issues, he could have been hit much harder in the foot than Nicky. Initially, they thought Johansson would be week to week with that injury but he only missed one game with it and was back for Nashville. For the hip flexor, they say he’ll be back next game — they’re just taking precautions (or at least that’s the story on CI).

from 19 via WaPo:
Maybe a little bit why we haven’t been successful lately is we try to be too cute. We have to get more dirty goals, shots from the point and crashing the net a bit more
“Lately”?!? Now, I’m the long marble counter in the Backstrom Lobby, but hearing him parrot this (fully 120 game old) mess here and now is dispiriting. Thanks for confirming what RJ freaking Umberger and a few thousand others said, more than a debacle ago. Ugh.
There's no 'i' in "team". But there's a 'nap' in "champion".
I thought Umberger’s remarks last year had more to do with the way the Caps were starting plays, with long passes through the neutral zone. That actually worked well, provided Greenlife52 was healthy in body (which he isn’t now) and spirit (which he wasn’t in the playoffs). Could Nicky be pointing the finger at Knuble?
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
You could be right about Umberger, though I thought his indictment was broader and aimed at the whole care-bear, mustn’t – wrinkle – my – sweater approach. I very much doubt 19 was pointing at Knuble. He’s Swedish.

Umberger’s complaints were more aimed at the Caps’ forwards disdain for backchecking and their tendency to leave the zone early to jump-start their offence.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Got it, though that reads to me like the D side of the same cute coin: the forwards keep their distance from the real and metaphorical iron. The ‘right way’ is to contest the whole ice, and the Caps simply do not have that habit.

On the fan blog about riding roller coasters with the Caps, it’s called “Going the Distance”. After I read more about the blog, I remember reading about a fan last year who traveled 175 mile round trip to the game — I believe it was from Annapolis and that particular fan was female. Could it be the same fan?
Must admit it’s more dedication than I would have. But is it more feasible from Annapolis than from any point in Virginia given that I-66 Eastbound is virtually impassible during evening rush hour. There are a few other roads in VA that are impassible as well. (For the record, I work in Chantilly, live in Reston, and Metro it to the game from the Vienna Metro during the week.)
