We may have gotten our first look at the Caps’ latest bromance. Caps in Pictures leads off with a black and white picture of Brooksie hugging Mackan. Awwww!

That… doesn’t look like a bromance hug… I think Brooksie is going for a submission, there.

Love that Mackan got his first goal and from just a few feet in front of Thomas too. Love too how happy the guys are for him. Great pic.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

On Boyd Gordon, several of the bloggers were under the impression that he was a “healthy” scratch on Tuesday since no official injury was listed. But, in one of the blog entries on CI that day (one of the earlier ones), Boudreau had apparently said that Gordon was “hurting” but it was not a repetition of his back problems.

Got to be upper body with as much trouble he is having on draws
If you've read this far...seek help.
I hate to say this because he’s such a good guy, but I fear for Boyd’s ability to stay healthy enough to play this game. He apparently stuck around the area this off-season specifically so he could be in top shape, and then four games in he’s injured again. It’s got to be frustrating to play the game with so much heart and constantly have your body betray you.
Are we sure it’s an injury and not the flu? I know Bruce said he was hurting…but I’m wondering why he’d be called a “gametime decision” if he hasn’t taken practice with the team for most of the week.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
He also blocked a shot late in the third in NSH and maybe it got him in the ribs or something. Dunno whose shot it was, but if it was a Weber shot…
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
True. The fact is (and Alan May talked about this on JRR this weekend) that the more aggressive PK and the willingness to sacrifice the body that seems to be a key part of the game plan these days is going to result in…well, sacrificing the body. We’ve already seen it with other guys like Mackan and Carlson, not surprising that Gordo in his 3+ minutes of PK time a night would be a little banged up.
I guess I just wonder why they would bother listing him as a gameday decision if he isn’t even skating with the team. If he’s THAT hurt, just say he’s hurt and not playing. It’s the isolation from the team that’s raising a red flag, followed by Neuvy getting sick.
(Actually, full disclosure, this was JP’s hypothesis that I’m kind of claiming as my own…but he’s out of pocket for most of the day so shhh, no one tell him :P)
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
JP is pregaming already? This viewing party will be EPIC.

It’s kind of ironic that the one guy who excelled at this is no longer part of the organization, Quintin Laing.
Except that he was no longer “excelling” at that and was spending most of his nights in the press box.

I don’t think he ever lost the ability to block shots or the courage to do it. It was the other parts of his game, or lack thereof, that kept him in the press box.
It wasn’t really about losing his “ability” or “courage”, it was rather that he wasn’t doing it at all, which took what little value he had already and made him expendable mcexpendableton. Plus, with his style of play, he just spent most of his time hurt.
Laing’s offensive contributions continue to be almost non-existent (Jose Theodore had as many assists on the season), as Q had the fewest points-per-minute and the worst shooting percentage of any Cap forward. His ice time was minimal (he didn’t top ten minutes in any game after December 26), and, most disappointing of all, Laing was a terrible penalty killer.
Did he ever get a job anywhere? In the AHL or in Europe?

I assumed when he missed practice it was related to the third period blocked shot on Saturday night; then, when Neuvirth got sick I wondered whether he might have the flu. I agree it is odd that he isn’t skating and the team is being evasive, even more so than necessary, if this is an injury or illness, just say so; however, I don’t agree with Peerless that this is his back, it could be but nothing to indicate it is and he did fine in the faceoff circle on Saturday night. If it was for personal reasons, you’d think they’d say so. So I go back to the blocked shot in the third period Saturday night.
I didn’t think it was his back, since this had been expressly (to the extent one could believe the team) ruled out. Could have been anything from his shoulders to his hands, but the blocking a shot explanation seems entirely reasonable.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Oct 21, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, I don’t think it’s his back either, but if it’s as simple as being banged up after blocking the shot, the team is going out of their way to be evasive on this one. Some things never change.
Didn’t he practice at least once since he’s been out? It’s definitely a mystery.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I guess the good news here is that it is apparently not the back issue again. Not good if he’s hurt, but the recurring back injury would be worse methinks.

Hockey Blog Adventure: New Post: Trip Report - Prague Pictures! (I'm also on Twitter.) GO BRUINS! (and Wild!)
by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Oct 21, 2010 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions
See…I don’t really get this. Not just in this game – all of them, I don’t really think it’s necessary to get someone away from a defender. And maybe I’m just not understanding the process correctly but it seems like something that is nearly impossible to do without really screwing with your lineup.
Obviously with last change you can get your guy off the ice if you don’t want him facing someone else, but then the other guy will just get off the ice as soon as HE can. In order to fully get a guy away from someone else, you have to really randomize his shifts, throw him out with different linemates, do a couple of shifts within a short period of time, etc. That disrupts the flow, and considering the top line is already a little out of sync (and the team was trailing) I doubt Bruce wanted to do that.
The fact is Ovie vs. Chara is a great matchup, always has been, and sometimes Z gets the upper hand. I’m okay with that (sorta). Ovie’s got 23 points in 21 career games vs. Boston…odds are he’s figured out how to beat Chara a time or two.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Yeah, I suppose.

It seemed like Ovie would come out, and Chara would follow shortly afterwards. However, I don’t think BB would keep Ovie off just because Chara is out there.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
That’s a good way to limit Ovie’s minutes.

BB has said he doesn’t like to line match too much for that reason, because it lets the opposing coach dictate when you have certain players out to an extent.

That’s why Scotty Bowman wasn’t so big on matching. Wasn’t going to have opponents dictate who he was and was not going to put on the ice. But he made up for it by juggling his own lines constantly.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Oct 21, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
BB’s not a big match up guy. His philosophy is not to let the other team dictate your lineup. I can appreciate that to an extent. And lets face it, if the Caps throw out Ovi, Chara is going to find his way back on the ice pretty quickly. Again the importance of winning faceoffs to gain possetion and make it harder for the other team to change guys up.
What I haven’t noticed BB do in the past (maybe he does a better job now a days) is to take advantage when the other team ices the puck. I’ve seen other road coaches make immediate changes to get the matchup they want in the offensive zone. I’ll see if that happens tonight.

Alan May’s contributions to CSN have been a welcome addition to the Caps media coverage. I must admit I was scratching my head last year when I first saw him on the pre-game shows on Comcast. But he has impressed me with his analysis and his willingness to call it how he sees it.
I think his blog on the Caps offensive issues was a great read. Beyond just talking about the issues, he presents solutions as he sees it. I know during tonights game I will be paying particular attention to how the defense is moving the puck through the neutral zone, the offensive zone attacks and spacing on the cycle.*
*Disclaimer: Amount of attention paid inversely related to beer consumption.

I agree. I think May has done the most difficult thing for an analyst to do: talk about the team and the game in a way that’s accessible to the casual fan while still offering insight for the hardcore fans.

But he has impressed me with his analysis and his willingness to call it how he sees it. I think his blog on the Caps offensive issues was a great read. Beyond just talking about the issues, he presents solutions as he sees it.
Very insightful and not too far from what I’ve been noticing with the Caps lately (dating back to this past playoffs/regular season). I really appreciated his perspective, breaking down key areas (e.g. On The Rush, Neutral Zone Attack & Transition, Offensive Zone Cycling, "Magnetting" re: Shots & Dumped Pucks at Net) where the effectiveness of the Cap’s offensive approach has fallen short and how they might be addressed. It helps that he cites other teams who excel at those certain areas.
Others (FB, D’ohboy, to name a couple) in this community have at various times throughout the past season brought these issues to light. Whenever the Caps, particularly OV and the first line, struggle to get into an offensive rhythm I always have FB’s fanpost in the back of my mind. Also, D’ohboy’s fanpost from the playoffs, which previously addressed Bruce Boudreau’s systematic issues. While the latter fanpost deals with BB’s system and mental lapses from a defense standpoint, I think it has some relevance to the offense.
Just a few thoughts:
The PK has been encouraging, we all know that, but hopefully we’ll see BB and the coaching staff make some adjustments that can put the Caps’ offense in a position to be more effective, deliberate, and disciplined from the moment they posses the puck in either their defensive end or the neutral zone. All too familiar are the long stretch passes (not just from the D, but also from forwards who wind up with possession of the puck deep in their D-zone) up the boards to a stationary winger. Or, OV trying to run through the gauntlet of forwards and D when carrying the puck on his own into the offensive zone when on the attack regardless of where his line mates are. Adjustments are crucial, especially at the NHL level where talent alone can only go so far — teams are no longer surprised by the Caps’ offensive tendencies and the talent allows that mode of attack to work. They’ve adjusted to deal with it. The ball is in the Caps’ hands to now make their own adjustments.
Ideally, you want a D man to carry the puck through the neutral zone when possible unless it’s a quick transition situation. It encouraged me to see Schultz carry the puck out of the DZone and at least through the neutral zone before dishing it off to a winger on Tuesday night. This is where Green is effective and missed. Hopefully Poti, and Carlson in particular, can consistently do the same with confidence eventually.
I think May has done the most difficult thing for an analyst to do: talk about the team and the game in a way that’s accessible to the casual fan while still offering insight for the hardcore fans.
Joe Reekie, he is not that’s for sure. I guess it surprises me that he’s been able to go beyond the typical ex-jock speak that fat_daddyo succinctly points out below. It’s great May is able effectively bring the experience and insight he had as a player and parlay that into what he says from a observer’s point of view both to the casual fan and hardcore fans. There’s definitely enough substance from May’s comments and observations for me to give pause and think about.
Anyways …

Sometimes it’s difficult to reconcile that May holds the season record for the Caps in penalty minutes. And it’s not like it’s close, either (339 in 1990-90 to 305 for Craig Berube). He’s come a long way from when he started in the studio. He seemed awfully uncomfortable at first.

Indeed. When he provides some quality + insightful stuff via his blog or live on-air commentary, I keep saying, Alan May?
The former Capital turned CSN analyst we’re watching is the same May that was the first player from the ECHL to make it to the NHL: a gritty, checking-line forward, hard-nosed player and fan favorite who in 393 NHL games scored 31 goals, 45 assists, and amassed 1,333 penalty minutes.

I think this is a crucial point that the coaches/team need to get through their heads. Teams are learning how to shut down our offensive talent, and that adjustment you call for was the big missing piece in the Habs series last year.

Mark Gandler, Galiev’s agent, sees the Super Series as a great opportunity for the player to impress the Russian national team brass.
“For him, they’re not going to be exhibition games,” Gandler said. "Stan is on the team and he should be playing both games (against Team QMJHL).
That’s the first I’d seen that Galiev is definitively on Team Russi for WJCs. Dmitri and Yevgeny will be happy to see their DevCamp buddy for sure.

He was doing something that sounded like a record moving badly. There is a thing called Serato Scratch that you run off your laptop. Essentially you play MP3s off the laptop but use these template records on actual turntables. It’s basically the coolest invention ever for DJing since you never again need to lug around all your records. This is probably what you saw.
Doesn’t matter, it was just a minor observation, they put on a great event up at VC and its not like it took away from my great time :D
Ah, I’ve heard of that. I wanted to get this numark ns7 that uses serato off of craigslist for my studio to start playing around with.

Japers’ generally does not write a game preview. We link to the other bloggers who write previews and they are all up in the first bullet of this post. Game day updates usually get linked in the sidebar under “What We’re Reading,” and/or the Japers’ commentariat will drop links/tweets in the comments.
The Game Day Thread always drops two hours prior to puck drop, and we always have a game recap up within forty minutes or so of the end of the game.

Just to be sure, the game is broadcast locally on CSN right? We won’t have NHLN at home for another week or two, and they black it out on Center Ice…
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
Interesting point from Damien Cox last night:
Does Rypien deserve more than Ted Leonsis, who received a one-week suspension in ‘04 after an altercation with a fan? That’s max 5 games.
Ignoring the fact that he seems to be taking another jab at Ted, there are a number of different arguments you can make here:
1) Yes, he does; hockey players are more visible than owners and already have a reputation for being somewhat wild and out-of-control on the ice – something which is a turn-off for a number of families who would otherwise attend games. Because the league wishes to curtail that image, league disciplinarians should be handing out stiffer penalties for what the players do to fans in the arena rather than what an owner, or otherwise less-visible member of the organization, might do.
2) No, because we expect a higher level of conduct from an organization’s owner.
3) Yes, because the incident was caught on video and thus is something of a black eye for the league.
4) No, because an owner engaging in such conduct presents an image that a culture of violence runs throughout the league.
Thoughts?
Damien Cox thinks the fan is more at fault than the professional hockey player. He’s also a nitwit.

Isn’t there some rule that if it’s more than 5 games, there has to be an in-person hearing? My guess is they want to give him at least that, and if that’s the case, they had to do the indefinite suspension in order to keep him out of last night’s game while they set up the hearing. It’s not like all parties involved can automatically clear time from their schedule within 20 minutes of the incident or anything, you know?
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Ted also paid a $100K fine, made nice with the accosted fan, and never tried to absolve himself from blame.

$100K works out to about 15 games worth of Rypien’s salary this season. Is that the conversion to use here?

by ThePeerless on Oct 21, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Wow, another pretty lame attack on Ted. How about comparing it to a more recent and relevant incident such as Torts in the 09 playoffs?
There is a difference between on ice conduct of players/coaches and off ice conduct of players/coaches and owners. If that fan had run into Rypien after the game in a hallway or something and heckled him, would Rypien pushing him be as big a deal? Not in my opinion. The fan would have stepped over the line in that case and would be getting what he probably deserved.
On the ice these guys are players and can’t react like that to fan heckling. Off the ice these guys are people and like anyone, don’t need to put up with such a-holery.
Not defending what Ted did, but comparing the two is a reach at best.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
by dcsportsfan1 on Oct 21, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
I think the fact that this was televised (and on highlight films all over the country) influenced the NHL more than anything else. Leonsis really clobbered the guy if I recall, grabbed him around the neck and threw him on the ground. I was surprised at the time he got off so light. I don’t know if Rypien even touched the guy, but he certainly didn’t hurt him.
Yet the fan from the Rypien incident is saying he was assaulted, and will sue, while the fan from the Leonsis incident decided to let bygones be bygones.
You had me at no problem.
Do you honestly think Ted, with his access to every DC sporting event a fan would like to attend (not to mention his $$s), didn’t influence that decision?

For 1, it doesn’t matter whether an owner or player. It’s the degree of embarrassment and how widely the altercation was viewed by the public. Thus, anything on the ice and just coming of the ice is always going to look worse, especially if it’s aired on television. A youtube version still doesn’t have the same impact.
For 2, 3, and 4, I think the comparison is bad because there are six years plus between the two events. How has Ted behaved since that event is the question. Or rather the question for me would be how many games would Ted get if he did that today? (Ted seems to have gotten into Cox’s head—the guy just can’t give it a rest).
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

Why is Ted’s behavior since the event in question? His suspension was handed down pretty quickly after he assaulted the fan. Both Rypien’s assault and Ted’s assault were first-time incidents (Rypien has no other suspension history, from what I can tell) and both were relatively widely publicized. Rypien’s incident is going to get more eyeballs because they’re going to stick it up on Sportscenter on a regular basis.
Oh I agree with you. I think it’s silly for Cox to even make the association. Next we will be hearing about when McPhee went after the opposing team’s coach (don’t remember who) and was also suspended. Cox can’t give it a rest. Must be because his book has dropped like a stone in that well of tomes soon to be remaindered.

I actually think it’s great for the team that 106.7 wants a Caps player enough to set up a regular schedule, along with their regular rotation of skins players (Cooley, etc). Green hasn’t been in the media that much this season so I don’t think this is a big deal. Maybe it will even help him to deal with letting others’ opinion of him influence him too much.

See…I definitely am not sold on Marcus taking that 2C spot (yet, at least) but I’m kind of excited to see how he does with Semin and Laich. He’s got good speed and better hands, which might make him a good option for 28.
Plus we already know Flash can play with Fehr, and I think putting him w/ two guys who are pretty responsible defensively in Chimmer and Fehr could help cover up his own blunders.
It’s an experiment, you know? Could be good. Could suck, but then all Bruce has to do is put them back. Just don’t touch that top line, BB – they need time to mesh.

True. And it’s not like they’re scoring much as it is, so no harm done if Mackan can’t handle 2C duties now. Plus it gives him a confidence boost, even more of one if he sticks for a few games, and gets Flash the hell off the 2nd line.

Actually the confidence thing is the one reason I don’t agree with your “experimenting” argument. If he can’t handle 2C responsibilities it could potentially have the reverse impact and shake his confidence.

I don’t really think it will affect the confidence of either C. It’s an experiment to see if some guys can get a jump start. It’s not like either 90 or 14 are excelling in the faceoff circle at the moment. If it works, great. If not, go back to the original plan.

We noticed they did get united for a bit in the third period of Tuesday’s game, but that might have just been overlapping shifts. Knuble had a slow start last year too, and spent time on the second line with BMo. Looking up his stats from last year, he was averaging 1 goal every 4 games for the first 28 games (Oct – Dec); the next 28 games he was scoring a goal every 1.56 game.

He’s faster for sure, but Flash definitely has more puck skill right now. Plenty of things to hate on Flash about (and I hate most of them), but his hands aren’t one of ’em. I suspect this was done to kickstart line 3 more than kickstart line 2.

Our seat neighbors went on vacation to Montreal last weekend and took in a Habs game. Said they had a great time; wore their Caps jerseys and the crowd was great to them. I guess it reciprocated the Habs fans we had opening night.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Yeah, they’re generally not bad – like at VC, there will always be some asshats in the crowd but unless you’re wearing a Leafs/Sens/Bruins jersey you’ll probably be left alone. I went to pretty much every Caps game during my 4 years up there, wore my jersey to most of ’em and never had any issues.

Nice seats. That must have been a hell of an experience.

A couple days ago I got an email for a half off offer at the Sheraton across the street where we stayed last time. In between that and some cheap airfare specials, giving some thought to going to that game in March (and to the Sens game in Ottawa the night before).

My fiancee’s a McGill alumna so I’m thinking one of the two March games would be as good a time as any to revisit the stomping grounds, if we can find the money.

McGill <3 I need to get back up there. What year did she graduate? (And yes it’s OT, I don’t care :P)

2007.
To bring it back around on-topic, I visited Montreal when I was a kid, but it was during the summer. We took a tour of the (then-) Molson Centre, and I have to say it was pretty awesome to be in the building and see all the Habs stuff even when a game wasn’t on, so I can only imagine the gameday experience is great. Verizon Center may never quite get there, but it’s not so far off and it’s an infinity times better than it was before, so I still count myself lucky.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
To be honest I don’t think there’s a way you can overbuild the experience. I’ve been to a ton of games here and only started doing roadtrips over the last 3 years, but that one’s going to be hard to top.
Best. Hotdogs. Ever.

It really is an amazing building, and an amazing atmosphere. They manage to find the balance between all the modern stuff with the lights and noises without drowning out the crowd, and there’s a constant awareness of the history that’s there.
Sounds cheesy but even walking into the new building you feel the history everywhere – and it’s a unique building in that it rarely matters what’s happening on the ice, the crowd is almost always loud and boisterous.
…did I mention I need to get back up there soon? I miss it, as you can probably tell :P

Can’t wait. Been to the Forum several times to see the Caps and the Bell center twice. My GF is also a Habs fan who has never seen a live game.
Winning is everything. The only ones who remember you when you come second are your wife and your dog.
I believe they stay at the Hilton Garden Inn up there (in case you’re starting to scout out hotels).

So…Jose’s apparently got an enemy in Mark Spector, a columnist for Sportsnet.ca. Check out his Theo-bashing rant on Twitter:
How do you spell prima donna? J-O-S-E T-H-E-O-D-O-R-E. Wild backup won’t talk on game day – even when he’s NOT playing.
Look in the mirror, Jose. You’re the backup in Minny now, not the starter in Montreal. Give your hair a shake.
What’s next? The other 19 players say, ’We’re PLAYING tonight. Why should we talk ?’ Great p.r. for the NHL. Where would he be w/o the NHL?
Asshat or MAJOR asshat? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to something that is, as far as I know, fairly common among goalies. And just because he’s not starting doesn’t mean he won’t finish, so the mental prep on game day would probably be the same – but I don’t know. Never heard a bad word about Theo while he was here, did you guys?
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Theo must have poisoned his puppy or something. Guy’s not going to change a habit of more than 10 years just because he’s a backup. Get over it.
"It's always good to have vikings."
That little temper-tantrum by Spector on Twitter made me glad that TEB wasn’t too comfortable with writing in 140 or less, else the Neuvy incident would have been all over the NHL last year.
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
Yeah…but the thing with TEB is that when he wanted to get his shots in, he did. He was always pretty professional about it, though. Corey, too. They don’t love all the guys, I’m sure, and they each have given some guys little jabs when they’ve messed up on the ice or whatever, but it never crossed a line. This smacks of being unprofessional to me.

Someone with Twitter should remind him that throwing a tantrum when you don’t get what you want is a classic example of being a prima donna.
And also that his role in the grander scheme of things has been taken over by a thousand bloggers who provide the same service he does, with the main exceptions that they’re better, cheaper and more prolific. So he should just shut his yap and concentrate on maintaining his grip on the job that he has.
What a whiner. I’m almost annoyed enough to figure out how to get on Twitter just to point these truths out to him.

What bugs me even more (and no, I haven’t been sitting here stewing over this for the last half hour…why do you ask?) is that he took the coward’s way out, the petulant baby way out by getting on Twitter and spewing his crap to anyone who would listen. Jose isn’t on Twitter; I’d bet good money Jose will never BE on Twitter.
So he’s basically bashing this guy, who has been with his new team all of 2 weeks, for doing something most goalies do on game day anyway – and is doing so in a forum where he’s assured protection from Jose actually seeing it.
As someone else said to me on Twitter, I really hope Jose talks to everyone BUT this ass after his first game.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
If only that would go for the entire team. Would be a great show of support for a new teammate.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I’m hardly the most objective person, but, yeah, never heard a bad word about Theo in DC. I found his little stick smashing, I-just-work-here day kinda amusing, actually. I like goalies to be a little fiery!

I also love that we can all remember that one day…because it was so out of character for him to say something even mildly snarky, you know? Plus it was completely understandable for him to be frustrated at that particular point, and I frankly was surprised he didn’t snark to the media more often.
…or maybe I wasn’t surprised. He’s never really been that kind of goalie, for all the hits he took in Montreal and Colorado.

Reads just like the NFL stories. It’s hard to realize that these large salaries are a relatively recent occurrance. And even the vast majority of current players can’t have a work-free retirement. A player at the minimum can still put a nice piece of change in the bank each year if he budgets properly, but it’s still not as much as you’d think.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I was talking to a guy who works for the NFLPA as a photographer and he said it’s amazing how few fans know about the realities of being an NFL player. League minimum is almost embarrassingly low (the NFL works of a seniority scale for league minimum; NHL rookies have a much better deal), and the average NFL career is scary short. There are no guaranteed contracts. Usually, we think of the super stars, or even just the comfortably wealthy. But most guys who come through will be lucky if they make $500,000 a year and play more than 3 season.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Most Americans won’t make $500k in a decade. NFL players also have to go to college before entering the league, so they have a bit better education when they get out of football.
My heart breaks for the old-timers who made very little, and have bodies that are falling apart, but today’s athletes are pretty well taken care of.
You had me at no problem.
