Tough game to watch last night. Not much flow or smoothness on the offensive side. I think Nick Backstrom needs to get his playmaking touch and feel back soon…we needed it last night.
Very much agree. Backstrom is slumping. His defensive lapse on the 2 on 1 goal was prominent. And he had maybe the best PP opportunity of the night on a 5v3, but completely flubbed it.
Things are just not clicking for Nick right now.
You had me at no problem.
Alzner’s defensive lapse was pretty bad on that one, too. Maybe Nick just couldn’t believe that Alzner would step up and try to make that play, because I sure couldn’t.

Me neither. That was bad.
The aftermath exposed the one real weakness that Nick has, lack of straight line speed. He just couldn’t catch Krejci.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Alzner looked like me in EASHL on that play.

Sloan maybe could have shat or got off the pot about laying down in the passing lane, too. Big time indecision on his part.
Not surprised.
FREE MP
Yeah, a better defender might have covered the pass. Or maybe not. But Sloan definitely did not.
The D corps is looking pretty weak right now, especially sans Green. But even w/Green, Alzner and Carlson will still be making rookie mistakes for a while to come, while Sloan and Erskine will continue to rest on the bottom-shelf of NHL defenseman.
You had me at no problem.
I think that Carlznerson would be playing a lot better if they were playing together.

So I complained last night that Neuvirth shouldn’t have started the game if he felt sick. Assuming what I’m reading is true (and we know one can trust Bruce only so much), then I take it back.
I had picked up that some players on other teams were already battling the flu; this is a bummer, and I hope we’re not going to see the guys go down one by one now.
Flu shots!!!! (yeah, I know it may not get the right strain)

Question needs more detail, I not sure what you want explained.
About Neuvirth, I thought Bruce let him play because the team record he’d hit if he played the whole game last night. He’s so big on that stuff. But my comment above was after I finally read Katie’s post-game, where he said Neuvy told him he felt fine in the warmup.
"It's always good to have vikings."
You answered my question, sorry for being vague.
I was frustrated with the decision to start Neuvy if he was feeling ill as well, so that explanation makes me feel a bit better.
"Do you see my fist? It was fists like these that built quaint Canadian cities out of the harsh Canadian wilderness, etc. etc."

by SeattleCapsFan on Oct 20, 2010 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Honestly, I think Neuvy did feel fine and then he had a sudden case of diarrhea creep on. He bolted out of there and then went straight to the locker room without talking to anyone. Varly didn’t even understand that he was about to go play.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
And he’s still not feeling well this morning. Look, we make snap judgements based on what little we know. When we get the full story, it’s different. At least a seat neighbor heard the radio report during the intermission; otherwise we’re wondering why Bruce pulled him, which we were at first.
"It's always good to have vikings."
It was pretty obvious that he wasn’t pulled if you were watching the ice. We won’t get the “full story” on it anyway so speculation is where it’s at.
Which is more likely with the flu? He all of a sudden felt like he couldn’t possibly continue anymore or he had to poop?
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
Depends on the type of flu, no? Stomach flu vs. a flu that’s more cold-like.
…hopefully it’s the latter. I just remember the other kind tearing through the locker room a few years ago and it sounded awful, anyone else remember that? In particular I remember hearing a very graphic interview Sutherby did w/ EITM, talking about hearing then-roomie Eminger up in the middle night in the bathroom. Gross. A whole locker room full of guys with that…just doesn’t sound pleasant.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
From my experience stomach flu at least tends to pass quicker than the cold-like version. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a stomach flu that’s lasted for much more than 48 hours, and the recovery time is pretty quick.
Cold-like flus can last for weeks, and just drain you of energy for a long time.
by BradleyFightingVehicle on Oct 20, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Last time I got the stomach flu which was last Christmas Eve, I was sick for a day and couldn’t leave the bathroom before finally going to urgent care for an anti-nausea shot and getting some imodium. My sides ached very badly for a few days from all the vomiting. I really didn’t feel normal again with regular energy level for a week. My stomach felt off for awhile, I don’t think I ate any sweets or anything spicy for a couple weeks. I would think it would take the guys at little while to feel 100% again, unless they got treatment quicker than I did.
What about the Matty Perreault flu?

Depends on what they saw. It looks like a referee and a linesman had just skated away when the incident happened. It happened pretty quick, and behind the bench, its possible they missed it.
They miss half the calls that happen on the ice, I wouldn’t be shocked to find they missed one that happened in the tunnel on the way to the locker room.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

I suspect Rypien will get a call from the League. Not sure how this guy isn’t thrown out of the game at the time. Particularly since at the time the game was out of hand and keeping him in the game can only lead towards more shenanigans.
Whats worse is the obligatory defense by Malhotra and I’m sure some others. Perhaps they didn’t see what happened and assumed the fan got physical with him. I hope that they revise their views because that’s a line that should never, ever be crossed. Sounds like Rypien was stapled to the ‘Nucks bench for the third, which may have more to do with the score than the altercation. But I’d like to think the ’Nucks coach was handing out his own form of punishment.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
by dcsportsfan1 on Oct 20, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Considering that Rypien started the altercation, he isn’t going to watch the NHL Wheel O’ Justice spin, it’s going to be tossed on top of him. I can see him getting 10-15 games. It’s not like Rypien’s never been to the Principal’s office before…
The two guys who got kicked out should be compensated for being kicked out. All they were doing was applauding the Wild’s success and Rypien getting a penalty. Nothing wrong with that. The Wild and the Canucks should definitely do something for them.

DJs mix things so they flow together. Good ones can seamlessly transition songs.
These days, they often set up light shows too. For example, more of an entertainer than a DJ, but Daft Punk is known for epic light shows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ItqVgaTIjI

DJ is an outdated misnomer, really, for what these guys are doing. I’d more accurately call them producers—the best create their own sound on the fly and the live performances are unique.

"Do you see my fist? It was fists like these that built quaint Canadian cities out of the harsh Canadian wilderness, etc. etc."
Not in Seattle anymore.
I may or may not have sat in my office’s parking lot for 20 minutes to hear the whole thing…he was good. A little cranky-pants, which seems to be his way lately, but good. A few things of note:
- Elliot opened the interview by saying they looked good last night despite the loss, which got kind of a short response from Brooks – said something along the lines of “we play this game to win” and mentioned being down 2-0 as well as the missed assignments that put them in that hole
- Brooks praised Carlson and Alzner, saying they were “just babies” who played well beyond their age and were going to be key for the team down the line
- Apparently Hendricks is a talker. Elliot asked Brooks whether Hendricks had felt awkward at first, coming into the locker room as an invitee-turned-newest Cap and Brooks laughed for about a minute, then said Hendy basically talks for 5 minutes straight before taking the ice. Said before the first preseason game he kept looking at Hendricks wondering “does this guy ever shut up?”
- Doesn’t seem all that thrilled about this HBO thing – said he’s both happy and pissed off about it, that he’s glad the game and the team are getting national coverage and there are some great guys on the team, but he probably won’t be on camera all that much and he hopes they won’t disrupt team meetings and the like. All business, that one.
- Said the Pavelec incident was one of the scariest things he’d ever seen and that they felt so helpless watching it; when the refs came over to tell them he was unconscious Brooks said his first thought was literally that the guy had had a heart attack and died. Said it was actually good for the game to start again because it took their minds off of it, and kind of laughed about scoring a goal basically on the next shift.
- Enjoys playing in other teams’ home openers, said he likes to go into buildings, rain on the other team’s parade and show them who the better team really is

Sorry you were stranded in your parking lot having to listen to that Becca ;). Too bad it wasn’t a tire issue or Brooks may have had to cut the interview short.
By the way, saw a clip on Sportsnet news earlier this morning with Pavelec. He seems to be in good spirits and confessed to not being able to tell much of the incident, and was a little apologetic about it. He seems like a good egg.

Hendy basically talks for 5 minutes straight before taking the ice. Said before the first preseason game he kept looking at Hendricks wondering "does this guy ever shut up?"
I believe it! I don’t think he stopped talking at all Monday night and seemed quite happy to chat with everyone who came to the table (and talk about his new hat, he’s quite proud of it). HUGE contrast to his table-mate, Gordo!
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Hendricks is a hoot. He’s definitely got some “Avery-like” qualities when it comes to yapping to the opponents. During a 2nd period timeout/ice cleanup, he skated back and forth across the ice “stretching” but yapping to Tim Thomas every time he skated by. Probably more good-natured than Avery, but I like that the Caps have a guy like that now. 100% Agitator.
Yes, the more I hear about his personality/see him, the more I like him. It’s like the other night when the Caps scored a goal against NSH and he went nuts high fiving everyone on the bench. “Hoot” is the right word for him.
"Because the game is not just about fighting no more. " D.J. King
I got his autograph at the STH party, and talk about social. He was talking to everyone, smiling a whole lot, and seemed to be enjoying himself. I told him it was fun to watch him play, and he got an ear-to-ear grin.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.

Nice recounting Becca. I also sat and listened to this interview, extending out my breakfast time. I don’t think you forgot anything. Well he did apologize and tell Elliot that he felt bad that Elliot stayed up so late for the game then had to get up early for work and the Caps didn’t even win. He also said it’s nice that fans expect to go to the Verizon center and see the caps win because it didn’t used to be like that.

In the two regular season games I’ve watched in the VC so far this year (Opener vs. NJ and last night) the Caps have come out of the gate extremely poorly. I have a theory about this.
This year’s intro video, according to this guy, is absolutely awful. Rihanna and pee-wee hockey clips do not make for amped up Capitals. And I can’t be the only one who’s irked by the fact that the one goalie kid is wearing his pads on the wrong legs.
I know if I was trying to get amped up before hitting the ice, that video wouldn’t do it.
WRONG LEGS, KID!

if the players quality of play is determined by the pre-game video, we’ve got more serious problems than I thought.
fortunately, I think it’s hogwash.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I agree that the intro video is god awful, but to think that there is a correlation between opening video and team level of play is just silly. If our team needs a better intro video to get pumped for a game, then we’re screwed anyway.

Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I get the impression that the whole defensive, “we are a hockey town” thing irks people. (Not trying to put words in other people’s mouths.) Maybe it’s a little too defensive, but I love the juxtaposition of the little kids and the big pros.

Little kids don’t get me fired up for hockey. They make me go “blech” or, less frequently, “dawwww.” These are not hockey game emotions. The rock band video was funny and had a good buildup toward the end.. We’re a rocking crowd like you might find at a concert, cool. The video last year, while completely different, still had a sense of building. I don’t get that in the new video.. it’s just flat and doesn’t move me at all.
FREE MP
I guess I failed to communicate a certain amount of tongue-in-cheek feeling toward the video ACTUALLY being the reason that they’re not playing well. As RedBirdie pointed out, if it’s the real cause, we’ve got some other problems.
But like Jordan said, it’s the flatness of the video that gets me. When the thing ends, it seems like the crowd is just standing there with a collective ‘Uh, ok?’ kind of look.
And I guess I am the only one really tweaked by the pads on the wrong legs. Rolls on the outside, young man.

We have made that mistake too. Now it’s my son who corrects me and makes sure the pads are on correctly. What can I say. I’m a slow learner.

I don’t mind the kids, honestly. If you’re theme is Building America’s Hockey Capital, well, kids playing hockey, with the implication that these kids idolize the Caps and dream of one day being a Cap, is a logical choice.
I guess it makes me a little nostalgic. When I was a kid, I got to be in something similar for a local olympic promo. Highlight of my young life. So I know how those kids in the video feel.

Indeed. I started playing hockey because I saw Don Beaupre at the Cap Center when I was seven, and I wanted to be him so badly. The video, in my opinion, fails to call forth any of those emotions.

Don Beaupre Mask 1989-1994
Nice graphic on the Versus telecast last night about how Tim Thomas’s new mask is similar to the one Don Beaupre had when he played for the Caps from 1989-1994.

That’s a pretty decent rendering, but it does miss the actual similarity between the masks, which is the more squared nature of the cage.

At every TV time out, Thomas did some stretching. But not like other goalies, near the goal mouth or at their bench. He would quickly skates out to the top of the circles, then almost poses in his stretch. Like he’s guarding his zone. I’ve never seen another goalie do that. Cracked me up.

Count me as not a fan of the 25-14-16 line. It’s an energy guy, a scoring center that isn’t a set up guy, and a power forward that needs a set up guy. I give them two shifts together before it’s broken up. To be honest, I’d really like to see 16 get some time on the top line with 8 and 19, because I think he’s a better fit up there at this point that Knuble.

Look, let’s face the uncomfortable reality here. The Caps do not have a second line center worthy of the name. Fleischmann is not that guy, certainly not now. The question is whether he can improve his defense and faceoffs enough to be a reasonable facsimile of that guy next spring. I have my doubts. Johansson is at least a year or two from being that guy, unless he has a real growth spurt this year. Yeah, you can see is is going to be a good player, but note the use of the future tense there. Gordon, Steckel. Uh, no. Not in this or any other universe where ice hockey is played are they a second line center option.

The Caps do not have a second line center worthy of the name.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before…

This has not been a good couple of days for Nashville. Dave Bolland concusses Matt Lombardi, Nick Backstrom (wait, never mind – the boards did it!) separates Marcel Goc’s shoulder, Cory Sarich busts Ryan Suter’s knee, and two straight bad performances.
Eek.

I try not to encourage such posting on Japers’ but I thought this CI comment on Ovechkin partying with DJ What’s-His-Name was too classic not to share.
I know it’s unrelated, but seeing this just makes me think how pathetic Crosby is. What was he doing Saturday night? Probably snuggled up on Mario’s living room couch watching Marley & Me on demand or some crap.

Versus Bus Ad Campaign
I’ve mentioned this before, but here’s a picture from this morning of an OmniRide Bus with the ad.
Versus reached out to a couple Bruins blogs because people were stealing those in Boston.

As in reached out to try to reach the fan base and tell them not to steal them, yeah, that’s not going to work.
Haven’t seen a bus in DC like I’ve seen pics of in other cities, but perhaps only at bus stops where OmniRide’s stop or not doing the bus stops here.
Could have been an inspired PR move to get the blog to mention the ads and versus’s coverage of the Bruins game. Actually, I really hope it was.
Because ESPN is awful and after 30for30 ends they should fold.

If you haven’t seen this, I posted this before… the blog I have seen with the most information/pictures re. the ads.
Funny you should mention a PR move…on a different topic which was discussed yesterday…I found the lack of an advanced email about the game time change yesterday to be interesting. I heard claims it was supposed to be included in the Caps planholder update the previous Wed. Yeah, so previous Wed. gives them enough time to figure out the notice didn’t go out in the update and even after getting calls from people to confirm since the tickets stated 7pm, all they did was include the game time in the game day notes email. With all the emails the Caps send out, you’d think they’d send an email the day before or that morning with a message stating reminder; Game time change: 7:30 start.
Some of the cynics sitting near me last night were discussing the increased sales food/drinks/merchandise with the extra 1/2 hour in the arena and the extra bodies in the seats for a nationally televised game. I still think it was just a typical lack of paying attention to details and communication by the Caps staff, but it is debatable.
Not to mention the versus folks at home watching versus for a half hour, waiting for the game to begin.

by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Oct 20, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think that’s as confusing…I’m discussing the fact that the season tickets had 7pm printed on them but the game time was 7:30pm; even if there was an email notice at some point before the day of game about the time change (if there was it was buried and/or awhile ago,) it makes sense to send a reminder email the day before and/or morning of the game with that being the subject, even more so given all the emails the Caps organization sends about every little thing.
In Versus’ defense, I heard the Travis Roy segment was pretty good.

Someone linked to this last night in the GDT. My personal favorite:
Host: Welcome to the first intermission show, where we ignore everything that’s happened in the game so far and instead have the discussion we’d already prepared in advance. The home team has recently lost two games in a row. What fatal flaw would you randomly attribute those losses to?
Management: I’m going to say a complete lack of intelligence on the part of everyone who has ever been employed by the franchise.
Media: I’m going to attribute it to a lack of character, brought on by the disintegration of the traditional nuclear family.
Player: I’m going to chalk it up to small sample size.
(Horrified silence.)
Player: Just kidding. Let’s go with character.

“We would love to have a country music warmup, a few of us,” Alzner confessed.
“Wheeeewww,’ Leonhardt whistled at that idea. “That will not happen. I’ll say this, if Alzner has a game where he gets multiple goals, then I’ll play an All-Country Night, you can print that.”
Awesome.
