From the globe and mail HBO article
Crosby’s nemesis, Russian Alex Ovechkin – currently starring as a disembodied head in a TV commercial – is the guy you bring home to snuff your Grandma. He will have no such problems projecting, of course. With his Rasputin-like leer and scraggly beard, he’s the essence of hockey’s Stanislavsky Method: a raging ball of demonic menace. In short, Ovechkin is going to make great TV for HBO.
That quote should be sent to hockey media members who were wondering about the perceived Canadian media bias on Twitter a couple weeks ago.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Heh. I just copied the same quote plus the fact that it followed this one about Crosby:
If someone is expecting Entourage on skates, you’ve got the wrong dude. Cros is the kid you want to bring home to your grandmother. (Quick, name one famous sitcom where a grandmother/son relationship kicked ass.)
The writer plays into the Canadian-media anti-Ovi stereotype only too well. Reminds me that idiots like this are the ones who help define stereotypes in the first place.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

The writer also mischaracterizes HBO and fails to recognize just how many Canadian entertainers and actors are in Hollywood plying their craft. Sure Canadians are shy in front of the camera. What a way to fall into a stereotype about Canadian hockey players too, as if all of them are boring and hate the limelight.

In defense, that applies only to the ones who come to the US. The ones toiling in Canada are pretty much anonymous.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Only to Americans, and that’s because we don’t get any of the good Canadian TV shows here. I mean I’m pretty sure that Nicholas Campbell would be recognized on the street by most Canadians.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
My understanding, from several people I’ve known for many years (where is RB?) is that while they may be recognized, people generally leave them alone. I mean, in Canada, if a million people watch something, that’s a big hit.
"It's always good to have vikings."
There are 25 million people in Canada.
Nicholas Campbell, as good as an actor as he is, probably wouldn’t be recognized on the street by most people. That would be akin, to saying Brian Cranston from Breaking Bad (and yes we have our fans of the show here, including myself) would be recognized by most people on the street in the US.

Wow, considering how long DaVinci was on the air, it’s crazy that there are people up there that wouldn’t recognize him.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Not everyone watched DaVinci. Most Canadians watch shows off the 4 major American networks rather than homegrown shows off CBC. DaVinci would never garner the ratings that a CSI New York, CSI Las Vegas, CSI Miami or CSI Tuscaloosa would get.

To be honest, I took that (and frankly, the entire article) as satire. But the part of Sidney Crosby making Bing Crosby look like a meth freak was pretty funny.
I suppose. I guess I can try reading it again later but just set my teeth on edge this morning. Perhaps I’m just cranky because I’m happy that the Caps won but really not happy with how they played. I’m loving me some Neuvy though.

At least they consider Ovi as Crosby’s nemesis and not his whipping boy. Remember that Ovi’s image is being managed by IMG, and so the perception of him as the crazy Russian bad boy is according to plan. I’m pretty sure Ovi’s people have no problem with that description of him.

Sami's Birthday...
…was ruined last night by Kronwall… he ruins a lot of days, doesn’t he?
Washington Capitals 2009-10 = Quebec Nordiques 1994-95
--- D'ohboy
Not ruined yet, his birthday is today; however, he didn’t play last night and looking at some info. Coyotes fans don’t seem to be clear if he is injured or not, so injury or scratch, I would assume it was not a good day for him yesterday; Phoenix plays tonight against Anaheim.
Healthy scratch again last night. Schlemko has been getting the last D spot instead of Sami. Sami did looks the most stylish off the three scratched guys on the bench during the roster intros last night.

Thanks, I assumed he was a healthy scratch, but wasn’t 100% clear based on what I had read. One question, “again?”, I thought Lepisto played in the Coyotes first 2 games and this was his first scratch of the regular season.
Your question was a smart one. I knew he played in game 1 in Prague, but forgot he played in game 2 as well due to the invisibility cloak he had on. He wasn’t the only one. He played in the Prague games because Derek Morris was injured. Morris played last night.

Thanks, so odd man out with a healthy D corp; as you mentioned earlier, battling for playing time with Schlemko, curious with the back to backs what happens tonight.
I’m all for him getting sweater if it means Tippet benches Jovo. Of course that isn’t going to happen. I’m guessing Whitney will still be out tonight, but wouldn’t be surprised if BizNasty gets a sweater.

the year the Caps lost somewhere around 300 man games. Insane.

In 1998-1999 the Caps lost 511 man-games to injury. They dressed a total of 37 skaters for the year (14 defensemen!), and only six players played more than 70 games. None played in all 82 games.

I’m taking it there’s no practice today. Haven’t seen anyone say anything. I know there’s two off days between games, but shouldn’t they have at least a light practice today, considering how badly they played for half the game? The new goalie DeSerres is coming from the Brandon Wheat Kings, and he was the goalie who kept the Calgary Hitmen from advancing to play Windsor in the Memorial Cup last year. In a weird set of circumstances, his move this weekend helped Cody and the Swift Current Broncos, as they swept a home-and-away series with the depleted Wheaties this weekend, and Cody added three goals to his scorecard.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Is he among the league leaders? I think we are due for a full CHL report of caps’ prospects soon Emily . . . !.
I agree you are (over)due.
Cody is not in the league leaderboard (yet) because the WHL season got underway while he was still playing preseason games with the Caps. His team got off to a slow start without him and frankly didn’t look that much better when he returned for the first few games. However, they have improved quite a bit over the last four games or so and I think they will start playing more consistently. They were 1-2 to start the season without him, fell to 1-5 after his return, and now stand 6-6.
Cody himself is clicking along at just over a point-per-game pace, with six goals and four assists in nine games played. But as his new broadcaster Shawn Mullin says, it’s only a matter of time before he unloads a 4-point night on some unsuspecting opponent.
A textbook Eakin goal he scored is featured at #2 in the WHL’s “Plays of the Week” for Oct. 10-15 here:

NCAA Prospect Updates
On the topic of Caps prospects off to good starts, DeSimone (and Thompson) are continuing to produce for UNH’s top line, even with Butler no longer there.
- “Thompson and DeSimone each had a goal and an assist to lead the Wildcats” in a 3-3 tie vs Michigan
- Burke did not play – out with what is being described as a leg muscle strain; also on UNH team, Sorkin, local prospect
- video highlights
“We practice it and they executed it to a T,” said UNH coach Dick Umile. “It was perfect. It couldn’t have been done any better. . . . Phil made an absolutely fabulous play.” <a href=“http:// ”http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=UNH%2c+Michigan+skate+to+a+tie&articleId=ca6c4b91-133e-41c6-b586-16681a0446fd" target="_blank">http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=UNH%2c+Michigan+skate+to+a+tie&articleId=ca6c4b91-133e-41c6-b586-16681a0446fd" >link to article
More NCAA weekend info:
- Dunn rebounded from last weekend to make 38 saves for SCSU in a 1-1 tie and was named number one star of the game
- Wey +2 in both wins for BC at Denver, also took 1 penalty
- Larson/UMinn – Lost 5-4 and 4-2 at home to UNO; Larson with 1a/even and -1, respectively
- Glass was -2 in BU’s 2-2 tie with UMass

If people are interested I can do a local prospect/camp FA invite update at some point, unless Emily plans to have an OT section to her farm report.
An assist and an empty-netter tonight for Captain Cody (7-5-12) as the Broncos won their 5th in a row and 6th of the last seven games with a 4-0 shutout. The team played its 9th game in the span of 13 days tonight and their record moves to 7-6 for the season.

According to Michael Russo’s tweets this morning, it would have been high (if somewhat sadistic) entertainment to watch the Wild practice this morning. Three fights/near fights, players doing laps, and a long bag skate. That’s what happens to a team that has all of two even strength goals this year (they had one last night to snap a 218 minute streak without one) and that lost to Columbus at home last night (first non regular-season sellout in Wild history).

Richards accuses the Pens of going down easy (h/t Pensfan8725 over at Pensburgh)
I wonder if this is Richards being petulant or if the Pens really do have a reputation amongst the other players for leaving their skates. The hatred every time these two teams take the ice is palpable, so the first wouldn’t surprise me at all, but I’ve definitely seen some embellishment out of the black and Vegas-gold squad. I’ve seen it out of some Caps, too (I’m looking at you, Sasha), so stones in glass houses all that, but it is curious.

I’m not shocked at all, but I agree that it’s hard to tell. On the one hand, you have PHI who is notorious for taking PIMs. Then you have PIT, which always seems to lead the charmed life in the PP department. I’ve noticed several guys on PIT go down much easier than their skating and strength would suggest, but I don’t know if it’s a league-wide reputation or not. Hopefully we see some other teams start to comment on this and then some league attention. It seemed like it was right after Sid and Richards called out AO for dangerous hits that the whole reputation took a turn and the suspensions followed.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I think it’s a combination of Richards having a minor hissy fit and the Pens reputation among other players. It’s amusing to see another player call a team out for such antics, and amusing to see Richards whine like a kid who just got his toy taken away.

Backstrom hit under league review?
Just watched a taped HNIC game between CAL and EDM last night and they mentioned and showed Nicky’s 2nd period hit on Guc (Boarding) is under review by the league? Is this common for any boarding PIM?
Goc left with an injury and didn’t return. NHL standards are to punish the outcome (as long as it’s not Matt Cooke or Mike Richards, can’t have that), not the action, so there could be a fine depending on the severity of the injury. I don’t think Baxter’s ever had a major penalty before (and still hasn’t) so I could see a warning, but I doubt he gets suspended.

Watching the replay (didn’t see the first two periods last night), so I just saw the hit. Looks like a call of boarding (versus interference) was marginal. He didn’t hit him in the numbers, it looked more like the shoulder blade. But he’s a Capital, so who knows what comes of it?
"It's always good to have vikings."
Green also skated halfway across the ice with his elbow out and might as well had a big neon sign above his head that read “I’m gonna elbow you in the face!” It was so blatant, so obviously pre-meditated that he had to be suspended. Maybe 3 games was too many, but ultimately is was an incredibly stupid thing for Green to do.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
If you doubt he gets suspended, the only illogical conclusion is that he gets three games. /wheelofjustice
Seriously, that’s the worst part about this. The idea that the injury determines the suspension is so Hammurabi. I get that intent is a hard thing to gauge, but it’s still gotta be a better metric than this.. right?

I guess at this point if you have a questionable hit and someone is hurt it’s going to be reviewed. I think it’ll be a fine, if anything. It was a board, and it was at a bad angle, maybe a little from behind, but it wasn’t terrible and he wasn’t going to clean him out. Goc was off balance and it turned out to be a bigger impact than you’d expect on that contact.
