Eakin, of course, has several NHL pre-season games under his belt in addition to those 7 games in the WHL. Including one where he tallied the game-winner late in regulation.

Definitely interesting. A handful of outstanding performers on entry level deals hasn’t hurt, but there’s no denying the bottom line. It’ll be interesting to see if this trend can continue.

As noted a number of times here, getting key contribution from ELC players is the holy grail in the salary cap era. In order to keep winning efficiently, they’re going to need the next generation – Varly, Neuvy, Carlson, Alzner, MJ90 – to play impact roles. And they’ll need the next-next generation to fill in behind them in, say, two years’ time (not totally sure who those players are at this point, which is a little unnerving.)
The picks given up for Corvo, Belanger, et al will not help in that regard.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hence the importance of drafting well past just the first round? /ducks

What always surprises me is how fans “know” who’s a bum and who’s a star before the kids get a game in Hershey. I don’t blindly trust scouts or GMGM, but they aren’t lazy and they saw the writing on the wall before the lockout. Is there another NHL team that was carrying a roster like the ’04 Caps, that has come close to the depth that Washington currently has? Anyway, I think the front office did an amazing job taking a bloated team, and turning it into young, lean, powerful franchise.

Not disagreeing with your conclusion, I’m just not calling them complete drafters in the first couple years after the lockout (and reserving judgment on the last three years), that’s all.

Oh yeah, I totally noticed that too, and currently (meaning I could be persuaded given a strong argument) my thinking is this:
Sure there are holes in the team, but it’s not like a jig-saw puzzle where the last pieces are the easiest. The last pieces of a championship are next to impossible to find. No other GM wants to help a contender become more powerful. Any player who feels they can be useful has their agent send over a dump truck to be filled with money before putting on a sweater. And GMGM can’t just wait 2 years to have Squeaks & MJ90 ready to be 3nd & 2nd line centers. He’d have to wait longer for a decent 3-4 or even 5 defenseman.
Okay, so make some trades. Fine with which team and for whom? Sure, plenty of teams will take Semin or Flash, in exchange for a first round pick in 2 years, a 7th defenseman, and a bag of money. There is no GM out there going to give the Washington Capitals a top 4 D. An UFAs are a crap shoot at best, almost nobody who can play will take a 1 year deal. The guys who will take such a deal aren’t offering a resume that justifies the price tag. And the best shot at a top 4 D-man that GMGM has had was for a guy coming off a concussion injury very similar to Brian Pothier’s. And 1 season later Potsie is now playing in Switzerland! Not to mention Mitchell wanted almost 4M and multi-year security. Can I really blame GMGM for not getting back on that ride?
I think that Carlson & Alzner are going to be much, much better by April. I also think if they are not, then GMGM should make a trade this year despite cap hit, or two-year requirement, for a shut-down D, even if it’s for a 5-6 because this team needs depth at D in a big, big way.
I’m less worried about the 2C spot. The faceoffs and Flash’s weakness in the corners are a concern for sure, but I also think might be more teams willing to move a 2C to Washington at the deadline. I just can’t think of anybody running a hockey club and saying, “Sure give them some defense, that can’t come back and bite us.”

Since I sense we’re going down a road that I went the other day, I’ll agree that dealing from strength is newfound territory for the team, but by the same token, they’d perhaps be a little more loaded by drafting/developing/scouting the later rounds better in the immediate post-lockout years (or pushing those assets on for lower risk assets).
A very misguided piece on Huffington Post recently called 30 Rock the most racist show on television thanks to Tracy Morgan’s wild, manic, madcap performance. I’d argue that we’d be much more loaded if GMGM hadn’t totally effed up the Finley and Pokulok picks.
Those stand out as egregious errors in hindsight, especially given the fact that we’ve got no defensive depth.
Combine that with holding onto Sloskine while letting Oduya, Lepisto and essentially walk for nothing and . . . we see the result on the ice.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Add in Angus and the fact that GMGM has been pretty dreadful in the second round. I could live with him basically getting nothing in 3-7 if he would have done something in the second. Traded away a 2 to get Angus (wasting a 1 and a 2 in one feel swoop) then using one of the remaining 2s on Mestery. Bouchard, CBo, Kugryshev (we’ll see how he turns out). Only Neuvirth has turned into any kind of success out of the 2nd round but there have been a ton of solid players to come from the second rounds of these last several drafts.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
In your mind, would the ascension of a late round pick becoming some sort of Patric Hornqvist (not in skill set, but in ability with respect to draft position) trump over one of the busts he’s had in the 2nd round?
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
Late round gems always take the sting off, but I don’t think it necessarily absolves a GM for missing on picks that should be hits. There is no excuse for missing in the first round anymore, and there are enough quality players in the second round that a GM should realistically be able to go at least 50%.

Letting the air out of hte Carlson balloon a little, aren’t they. What do we read into this?
The coaches seem to have made a concerted decision to air his dirty laundry in public. From CM22’s piece:
"I think his whole overall preparation to play – that is one of the biggest things about being a pro is you have to be prepared right from the first [puck] drop and I think he has struggled a little bit in that area.," assistant coach Bob Woods said. "But he’s aware of it and he wants to be better than he is right now and I’m sure he will be. I’m not worried about John Carlson – he’s going to be a really good player. You have to remember that he’s 20 years old and he’s going to get better every day. It is our job as coaches to get him prepared and ready to go, and I think he’ll be fine."
That’s a pretty stiffly worded indictment, not being ready at puck-drop

It would be a big deal if the guy wasn’t a rookie. Rookies are expected to have areas where they need to improve, and Carlson probably knows that this is his. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Either Corey or CK/TEB (and I think it was Corey) reported that Boudreau allowed to the press that the video session after Atlanta had focused on AO’s shortcomings during that game. It wasn’t as specific as the stuff on Carlson, but there was no doubt that the content and theme was “you weren’t good”.
Letting that slip in the press is another departure from what I would expect from this team.
It almost makes me believe that the team is trying to make accountability a focus this year.
And before anyone gets hot under the collar, I kknow TOI is the ultimate accountability weapon. But maybe, just maybe, this is a baby step; or at least a signal that there is a level of self awareness within th FO/coaching staff.

I dunno, I think if it’s your first week in the NHL and the coach is calling you out in the press, citing lack of readiness that’s a pretty strong coaching note. But I also agree w/ J.P. and you. It was done to drive home a message about how to behave in the NHL, and that the coaches all think he will rise to meet and surpass the challenge.

He’s a 20 yo guy who just came off of every hockey playing kid’s fantasy years…a WJC championship (executed by him), a call up to the NHL to a team with some of the world’s greatest hockey talent, and some pretty sizable minutes on said NHL team. He’s already got a goal and now has the second highest point total on the team. I’m sure a little ego deflating on BB’s part is completely calculated and probably pretty necessary.

And one of the biggest “if” is this… “if you get one player, maybe two (on average) out of each year’s draft that plays real minutes, you are probably doing pretty well.”
2002: Alexander Semin, Boyd Gordon
2003: Eric Fehr
2004: Alex Ovechkin, Jeff Schultz, Mike Green
2005: none
2006: Nicklas Backstrom, Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth, (Mathieu Perreault in waiting)
2007: Karl Alzner
2008: John Carlson
2009: Marcus Johansson
2010: ???
That’s 12 roster players since 2002 (and one who might be an in-season call-up, who already has NHL experience), and only one draft that was a shutout. You can fill in the remainder with trades, waivers, FA’s if your pipeline is that reliable.

Thinking the same thing. That draft class was just downright silly. Two top-four defensemen and the best player in the world in one draft. Certainly goes a long way in explaining GMGM’s marginal cap efficiency for the past four years.
Not as silly as the 2003 draft.

In all fairness, I’d include Eminger in the 2002 draft class as well. The guy is still bouncing around the NHL, after all.
That’s the other part of the formula here… draft picks are not just players-in-waiting, they are trading assets. Eminger was traded to Philadelphia for a draft pick that became, wait…
John Carlson
Brian Sutherby (2000 pick) was traded for a pick that was later moved to get Cristobal Huet
Tim Kennedy (2005) was traded for a pick that became Mathieu Perreault
Oskar Osala (2006) went in the deal that brought Joe Corvo to DC
Ted Ruth (2007) was moved to bring Sergei Fedorov to Washington
Stefan Della Rovere for D.J. King

I’ve said it before, and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but I think video games have made people vastly underestimate how hard it is to build a successful professional team.
Not that I think people are so dumb that they think it’s a perfect simulation, just that I think it’s easy to forget that real GMs are dealing with 29 other really smart guys who know a lot about hockey (insert Glen Sather joke here), and that players have actual personalities – i.e. that you’re dealing with people, not just blips in a video game. Not every free agent’s going to sign with you just because you offer what he wants, and there’s not always someone available at a reasonable price who fills your team’s need.
indeed, it takes two to make a trade happen—sometimes three. But many posters forget that in their favorite trade scenarios.

M-W may spell it, “tony” but according to the O.E.D. “tony” is a common corruption due to confusion with the proper noun and moniker, “Tony.” They say the proper spelling is, “toney” referring back to being musically harmonized, and fitting or appropriate with the ‘better classes.’

That’s what’s so great here. I learn new facts everyday. And not just about hockey
Funny but I tried to spell it with an “e” but got the red line error. So I took the “e” out thinking it was my mistake. I’ve been corrupted by online dictionaries.

Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
Only “breaking news bloggers” get such a pass. So, for example. if you were blogging about the unfortunate death of someone despite all medical evidence to the contrary, feel free to misspell his name.
However, some of your clips are well over 10 minutes old by the time they are posted. No pass for you.

I focused on that very point too. I remember in these very threads some posters were defending the errors in the excerpts saying that the book hadn’t been published yet and that many of us were being ridiculous in our pettiness. At the time I felt that a manuscript that was already published as an advanced copy shouldn’t have that many lazy errors—too expensive to correct and would therefore end up in the final tome. Ha!

Nashville update
Here’s a little of where things stand so far for your next opponent. Nashville is 3-0.
- Steve Sullivan has 4 goals in 3 games.
- PP is running at a 30.% clip, but the PK is struggling at 66.7
- Martin Erat is on injured reserve.
- Matthew Lombardi played very poorly against Chicago, and was scratched against STL. Trotz said its day to day, but I’m wondering if that was the company line for a motivational healthy scratch.
- Pekka Rinne has missed two straight games, but will probably be back tomorrow. Rinne is 1-0, 1.40, and .967; Lindback 2-0, 2.19, and .925.
Probable Lines:
Hornqvist/O’Reilly/Sullivan
Wilson/Lombardi/Dumont
Kostitsyn/Legwand/Ward
Smithson/Goc/Tootoo
Weber/Suter
Bouillon/Klein
Franson/O’Brien

Weber lost a ton of respect from me on that move. At this point I could care less if he lives or dies. Fuck him. He’s a star so he should know better, you don’t go breaking hands/wrists in a preseason game. What was for him to gain? 0 points in the standing? A roster spot? He’s just an asshole. And he wishes he was as good as Mike Green.

While 3 games is entirely too small a sample size for anything, they’ve implemented pretty much a totally new system from last year on the man advantage. Last year the strategy was “pass it to Shea and get outta the way”, but so far they’ve tended to set up lower and try and run tic-tac-toe plays. The movement’s been great and the passing extremely crisp – I’m skeptical as to how long it’ll last, but they’re doing something other teams can’t figure out.
Weber’s shot is still the best weapon, so I’m somewhat perplexed as to why that’s all but disappeared on the PP thru 3 games.
by Chris Burton on Oct 15, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions
And while 4 games is entirely too small a sample size for anything, the Caps have implemented a totally new system while on the PK – more aggressive, more focused on attacking rather than sitting back and reacting to a play, more blocked shots, etc.

Poor Islanders!
Starting with the game against the Caps, the Isle have started a stretch where 12 out of 15 games are on the road. That’s a tough way to start the season for a young team.

Fair point…and not quite the same, but if Rinne can’t play/dress the Nashville goalie tandem likely will be (as it was last night):
Anders Lindback and Mark Dekanich
and their wealth of NHL experience
Lindback: 137 min 22 seconds of NHL regular season playing time; played in the SEL last 2 seasons.
Dekanich: has dressed for NHL regular season games only as a backup (and linking back to yesterday’s comments…a Colgate Red Raider)

Fahey does not have to clear re-entry waivers. In terms of the 30 days on the NHL roster/10 NHL GP counter (cumulative, whichever the player reaches first), resulting in waivers to go back to the AHL, if the player is recalled on an emergency basis with the appropriate paperwork to the League, the counter does not start.

So, Atlanta’s Boris Valabik is on waivers. Two questions: (1) Should the Caps put in a claim, and (2) Are we seeing Dylan McIlrath’s future?
Yes, I would pick him up. We don’t want him fighting though.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
He got put on waivers? I thought they were okay on the roster cause they got an exception for Hainsey?

Slater’s free now? Hope Harley Race’s bounty is well-saved, ‘cause Flair’s coming for it.

Rags fans would be ecstatic to finally get that crease clearer! If only they had known they could have had him this off-season when Andy Sutton was free. Or 4 games into the season when Valabik was on waivers. At least Fowler isn’t doing anything to make them regret passing him.

Valabik and McIlrath were also both chosen 10th overall.

Oh I noticed. Although the two stud D left in that draft fell much further than 12/13.

Also in waiver wire news....
DAL has put LW Fabian Brunnstrom on waivers. 2 years to the day after he became the 3rd NHL player to score a hat trick in his NHL debut.

He peaked too early. Nothing but downside now.

Anyone see that Foligno got fined for that hit on Dwyer. The NHL is bordering on obscene. If they take that hit out of the game… I don’t even know. For those that didn’t see it, it was a classic ambulance pass. D passes it right up to Dwyer from behind and Dwyer watches over his shoulder while Foligno comes from the front and trucks him. Unlike the Cooke/Richards hits, he didn’t chase him down from behind in the blind spot. The only reason Foligno was in a blind spot was because Dwyer was looking the wrong way. I understand not wanting the Richards/Cooke hits, but I do think “keep your head up and pay attention” still has some merit. I especially don’t want to see the game change to where guys can ignore protecting themselves in the middle of the ice and ambulance passes are no longer a bad thing. Poor decision, Colie.

He got fined $2,500, and I think he’s lucky he was not suspended under the new rules. It was a blind side hit in that Foligno came up from Dwyer’s left side, not the front. Even if Dwyer had his head up it’s doubtful he would have seen him. The bigger point is that the primary point of contact was the head. Foligno appears to have had ample time to hit him in the shoulder/back but glided along and hit him in the head. Now, I think this was mostly the result of Foligno being taller than Dwyer or at least skating taller but thats not an excuse.
I would agree that players need to skate with their heads up, but not out of fear that someone will drive their shoulder/elbows into said head.
Once again, however, the league uses extent of injury, or lack thereof, when determining justice. Stupid.

He came from the front. Yeah, he was a little to the left but if Dwyer was looking forward and had even average peripheral vision he would have seen it. That’s a hit that should be blamed on the D that passed the puck, not Foligno.

How can you blame the dman for Foligno hitting Dwyer in the head? Sure, the dman may have hung Dwyer out to dry with a weak pass up the middle, but that doesn’t mean he’s responsible for Foligno putting his shoulder to Dwyer’s melon. That’s the issue. Foligno had every opportunity to destroy Dwyer with a clean check to the back/shoulder but he didn’t. He hit him in the head and that’s what was wrong with that whole sequence.

I’m not even convinced the initial contact was to the head. It looks like he got shoulder. And he definitely didn’t “drive” his shoulder into Dwyer. He basically coasted into a guy that wasn’t paying attention.
And as you said, the height difference could just as easily explain the head contact.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
The slow-mo on the Kukla’s Korner video makes it pretty clear that there was head contact, so I’ll back off that point. I still don’t think this is akin to the hits that spawned the new rule, and I definitely don’t think Foligno hit him with all that much violence. He didn’t explode into Dwyer like Cooke and especially Richards did. He was pretty much coasting and just bumped him.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
It was a token fine though – $2,500. I think that’s more a warning to other players.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Yeah, I guess it’s just message sending time since there was head contact. I just don’t like the idea of allowing players to put themselves in dangerous positions. Skating up the middle with your head over your shoulder, or seeing a checker come and then spinning so you are face first into the glass shouldn’t make it so you can’t be hit.

That’s the max they can fine a player under the CBA, IIRC.

It’s interesting that the maximum fine in the CBA is so low. Other leagues are able in assess fines far larger. Granted, aside from the stars, NHL players probably make less than players in other leagues, but maybe there should be a way to make the fines proportionally large enough to actually hurt. Even a guy making league minimum isn’t hurt too badly by $2,500, as long as he doesn’t pile up too many of them.
"It's always good to have vikings."
The owners pillaged the players so thoroughly on the last CBA, it’s hard to believe they overlooked this issue, which would have allowed them to really rub it in.
Maybe they threw it in as a face-saving gesture or something. Because you’re right, it’s a bit odd.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Another note on the RMNB piece:
When your simulation arrives at a mean that’s below all previously observed data points and you used those data points to set the simulation parameters, you done fucked up somewhere. 42 goals in 82 games is a fine total for most players, but there’s nothing in AO’s past seasons (46 is the low point and he’s averaged well over 55g/82 games since then) that suggests the mean ought to be that low.

VS /Bus ads Anyone have a picture?
I saw the same bus again today at the same location, which means impossible to take a picture…so if anyone who sees or rides OmniRide buses or lives in Prince William and can take a look at bus stops, if you can take a picture of the VS Capitals’ ads that would be great. Thx

Aside from the obvious reasons — you want to have a goalie who’s clearly good enough to be a No.1 big game guy, and you want to avoid drama — a true back-up goalie helps his teammates improve.
In practice, your starting goaltender gets treated like a starting quarterback. The majority of these guys rarely go all out on off-days, and the team is super-cautious not to hurt their precious ace. Coach doesn’t want to over-work them, and they don’t want to be over-worked.
this makes a lot of sense, and it’s not something i’d considered before. do we know how early BB tells varly or neuvy who’s starting on a particular night? are they able to change their practice workloads accordingly, or is it always last-minute (or day of) notice?
