"Don't get me wrong, he does a lot of great things and a logs a lot of minutes. But he's a young guy and we don't want him to think he's Ray Bourque yet.... He has moments of greatness, but he's not there. We just want to make sure that he gets better and he doesn't think he's right there. We showed him clips this morning of all his mistakes this morning and he's going to get better, but it's a process."

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
My expectations are for a bit of a Carlson roller coaster ride. In every game he plays in this his rookie NHL year, he will likely have plays which are ugly, bad, good, and maybe in a few games the occasional RAH moment. Hopefully, as the season progresses and his coaching and attitude stay focused on becoming consistently better, the ugly and bad will become less and less, giving ground to good solid play most of the time. And more RAH moments!
Some cled to brighten your day
What is BB talking about, Carlson playing poorly?! Carlson set up that PP goal, we were much crisper with him out there. I love BB but I am tired of the double standard, Green can screw up all game and there’s nary a peep from the coach.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Carlson’s been who people think Green is (though four games, so, take it for what it’s worth). He has struggled in his own end, make giveaways, had some questionable decisions, etc, but redeemed himself by playing well offensively.
Yeah, he was driving me nuts last night. Grabner’s burst of speed had Carlson turning around waaay late.
You had me at no problem.
you're right, but
Hell, I was safe in the stands and Grabner’s wheels had the same effect on me.
There's no 'i' in "team". But there's a 'nap' in "champion".
I don’t think he got beat so much physically there as strategically…just took the wrong angle and allowed Grabner the space to actually put the burst on and get around him without being able to shepherd him harmlessly wide (as Green did on two occasions that I remember to an attacking forward last night). Obviously same result, but something that is a fixable approach to how he defends, not being over-matched.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

I anticipate ‘carlsonrocks’ will hound you for the rest of your days for making that assessment.
I’m interested to see how he adjusts and progresses. Better to make these mistakes now than in April, right?

Rec’d for carlsonrocks.
A very misguided piece on Huffington Post recently called 30 Rock the most racist show on television thanks to Tracy Morgan’s wild, manic, madcap performance. Tonight illustrated why whoever wrote that piece is full of shit and should be punched in the face until he has a more nuanced grasp on comedy.

I love the picture of Carly and Ovi that CSN used for their piece "Carlson Still a Work in Progress." Wonder what Ovi’s saying to him to get such a beautiful smile. He really looks like a big happy kid.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?
"I'm not going to tell!"
Well can you at least guarantee fifty?
"No way. I have a different objective. To win."
It called the Chosen One Syndrome ... or the Carlson One Syndrome
Have you ever been anointed “The Chosen One”? Being “The Chosen One” gives you the honor of great play or performance as ordinary and mistakes are magnified 100-fold… as Nietzsche said “What does not kill you makes you stronger” … at some point Carlson will be a total defensive force on the ice and Bruce is just trying to get him there..
In certain areas of my life I’ve been in Carlson’s “skates” … I took more criticism, only because I was that talented…

Among fans, however, it seems he is given a free pass even when he plays horrible. The coach finding flaws in his game and pushing him to be better is only a good thing.
Depends who you’re talking to. It was pretty unanimous on here last night that he had a poor game even by his normal standards and what we’d expect as “rookie mistakes”. No one was saying he did everything wrong but he had some key errors. Fortunately it didn’t cost us and he gets the opportunity to learn from them. Reading some of the comments on CI after BB even “dared” claim he had a bad game is just humorous.

Amongst the masses he will always be the Real American Hero who can do no wrong, especially among people who don’t watch every game.
I doubt it. The ‘masses’ probably have no idea what the WJC is.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
everyone knows someone who has gushed about John Carlson. My entire family is John Carlson fans because I said “That kid beat Canada.” It doesn’t matter that they don’t know what WJC is, all they care is John Carlson beat Canada at their own game. America loves a winner.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I don’t think we’ve been really zero-ing in on Carlson’s mistakes yet. Its mostly positives for the kid he has made some good defensive plays and some bad ones. But I think BB’s approach to this is good. People criticized him and Ted for for not handling Ovi well by saying he’s “perfect” and should never change.
I mean if we keep Carlson confident and aware of his mistakes he will continue to play well. Unlike sometimes what happens with Green where it does appear that he gets down on himself.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
I feel your pain,
Sometimes my effortless brilliance causes criticism when I’m merely “good”
