I think Ovi is like some fans in that I think he wants to fast forward to the playoffs. There is nothing IMO, that this team needs to prove during the regular season. Besides the development of some players there aren’t any mysteries about this team that relate to the regular season. Its all about the playoffs.
I think Ovi will snap out of it at some point just like I will…
When are the playoffs again? Are we there yet?

Glad to see Stretch getting more and more involved. He’s a classy young man, and the Caps should try and keep him around as long as they can. Also, working last night is particularly upsetting because Stretch and I have an ongoing battle of obscure 80’s 90’s music/tv references. Missing the game will surely give him a big advantage in our next sparring bout.

That doesn’t look like a red weagle deck. That looks like a rare 12" pressing on red vinyl of something involving the Weagle. Where can I get it?
Every time Matt Bradley scores a goal, everyone inside the Beltway should get the next day off from work. It's only fair.

Somewhere in the recaps, I think it was Vogel’s, it is suggested that AO has an injured left hand. First I’ve heard of this. Anyone got any further intel on this one?
I’m with Peerless. Don’t understand why Green gets 30+ minutes while Schultz gets 20.
Really hoping that Backstrom can get it going here before too long. He looks way off his game.

I’ve seen speculation of the same.
I don’t agree on Backstrom – I think he’s doing some different things (forechecking like a madman chief among them) and get the feeling that the points will come. In bunches. Soon.

From what I saw, the same wrist has been slashed twice. Seems to be the tactic to stop Ovechkin this year.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
If someone (God forbid) breaks Ovi’s wrist before the Winter Classic, Mr. Bettman’s head may explode.

The Caps own the seats next to my aunt. For Game 7, Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, Brendan Shanahan and some other NHL guy sat there. They were definitely cheering for the Caps. Shanahan jumped up and cheered when Ovie scored the goal that was later disallowed.

Re. AO, any indication of when, how and how serious?
I’ll try to pay more attention to the forechecking aspect of Backstrom’s game. If that line gets good forechecking pressure, I’m with you, the points will come in waves. I haven’t noted it so far, but I haven’t really been looking for anything more than him creating chances with the puck on his stick.

With you 100% on 19’s play so far. He’s creating a lot of chances that aren’t finding the twine, but should. Those shots from the slot are goimg to start going in soon and those backdoor passes are going to stop skipping blades. Carlson biffed a couple just last evening – we could easily be talking about Nick’s 3 A night.

Backstrom looks like a completely different player out there. I’m sure come midseason he’ll take the good of what he is trying now and add it to the good that he has established. Hopefully that slapshot will be added to his repertoire, it looks like he’s going to have a terrific shot with that.

He does look different and I like the change. Stronger on the boards, gritty forechecks and more physical play. His play has shifted more towards a Crosby-style and I can’t see that as anything but a positive.

Schultz sits during the power play, Green doesn’t. That’s most of the disparity in time on ice.

I was speaking more to the wisdom of playing Greenie 30 minutes and Schultz 20, more than the mechanics of how they got there.

That makes sense. Given that Green should get the power play time, who replaces him as Schultz’s partner at even strength?
See, I disagree that Green should get as much PP time as he does. I’d like to see them both getting about 23 a night, PP time included.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
So with you on this. I’d like to see Green at 23, AO at 21 and Carlznerson take more of the load at evens. And unnamed D acquisition X take some time from 4/89.

Until that acquisition happens Green isn’t going under25, and I’m not sure he should. Carlson skated just shy of 22 so it’s not like he could have taken many more minutes.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
The problem with Green is that they should be splitting the PP time between him and Carlson, and cutting back on his PK time somewhat.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Duncan Keith was playing over 5:30 a night or so last season, close to 60% of CHI’s PK minutes. Then again, he wasn’t getting 5+ mins of PP time per game.
by red army line on Oct 12, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Keih is better defensively than Green and not as good offensively. So he should be getting more PK time and less PP time compared to Green.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Disagree with the premise, as how much time a guy should get has as much if not more to do with his teammates as his own skill (to say nothing of how different teams commit penalties at different rates). If Mike Green is the Caps’ best penalty-killing defenseman, he should get the most penalty-killing minutes, regardless of whether someone on another team is better defensively.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I would disagree with the premise of the last statement. Green isn’t the best PK dman on the Caps. He is quite good at it, but I not the best.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Where’d I say he’s the Caps’ best penalty-killing defenseman?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
In the second sentence…. or that was the implication at least.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
IfMike GreenPlayer X is the Caps’ best penalty-killing defenseman, he should get the most penalty-killing minutes, regardless of whether someone on another team is better defensively.
In the debate that was going, his use of that statement would imply Green is the best.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
The “if” that opened the sentence made what followed a hypothetical. Yoshie’s spot on in what he took away from my comment.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That wasn’t the implication at all. The point was that how the Caps assign ice time shouldn’t have anything to do with how skilled their individual players are relative to Duncan Keith, which was your point.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I might have just read too much into it, but I saw that implied. I should rephrase my original statement a bit. Keith gets (and should get) the PK time because he is an excellent dman, and the best on his team. Green shouldn’t, because he isn’t the best dman on his team.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
And that makes perfect sense.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It makes sense to a degree…though I’d argue that he’s total SH time on ice is only 20 seconds more than Schultz and if the team is truly playing a more aggressive PK then maybe the coaches feel that the gap in skating ability is more important than the lapse in traditional defensive ability.
Holy runon batman.
I feel Schultz should be getting more, both because he is strong defensively and to cut down on Green’s TOI. However, those two were the two best options last night.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Personally I’d rather see Green’s PP time decrease by ~30-40% and an increased role on the PK. Like most people I hate seeing Ovechkin and Green out there for a full 2 minutes.
My preference would be for Carlson to get a significant portion of the PP time (maybe 40%), for Schultz to be the main PK dman, and for Green to get a good chunk of PK time. Green is good enough on the PK that I have no problem with him being there – it’s more about how much TOI he ends up with.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Can Carlson QB the PP though? It’s high time to find out.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.
Green shouldn’t, because he isn’t the best dman on his team.
Except that he is.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Well….Sarge ain’t bad defensively. Certainly can’t bring the offense that Green brings, but he’s right up there as far as D is concerned.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
by twistedlogic on Oct 12, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions
All-around, yes. Defensively, no. And that matters more on the PK.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Being able to handle the puck and move it out while maintaining possession is a huge asset for an aggressive PK. Even if Green isn’t the best defensive defenseman on the team, he’s not too far off, and did have great PK stats in 2008-2009 (so there’s a bit of a history there).
by red army line on Oct 12, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Adding more nuance still, the amount off PK, ES and PP time Green gets should depend on the delta between the goal differentials at each phase of the game and his next closest competition on the Caps, with an eye on keeping total minutes down for the playoffs. If that means others play more PK minutes so 52 gets more ES and PP time, then they should get them, even if 52 is a better PKer.

FYI…That was Green’s 26th game of 30-plus minutes in his career, all of them since Bruce Boudreau took over (since December 12, 2007, covering 198 games).
FYI, part II… his first 30-minute game also happened to be the first instance of “Game-Over Green” — his first game-winning goal, an overtime winner against the Rangers.

Don’t understand why Green gets 30+ minutes while Schultz gets 20.
PP Time.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
8:37 of PP time doesn’t explain a difference of almost 12 minutes. Green also had 2 minutes more ES and 45 seconds more PK – those are the ones I’m wondering about. I’d like to see Schultz get more PK time, he has shown he can handle it.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I’d imagine that it wasn’t entirely intentional. Coaches can’t completely control ice time.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I specifically remember Green getting stuck on the ice twice after Sarge had already changed. One of them really long. That could possibly account for the 2 min at ES right there.
That and being on the ice after the PP ends. The PK time is really what I wonder about more. I know Green is good enough to handle it, but he needs his minutes cut back a bit – and the PK is probably the best spot to do so.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I don’t think his ice time will continue to be this high. It’s more likely a one-off thing.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
True – but he’ll probably continue to get 25-28 minutes.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Some of it may be logistics. For 2/3 of the game, Schultz is the defenseman furthest from the bench, so he has to be more rigorous on his changes during the first and third periods. Green’s changes are easier in those periods so he can be a little looser on when he goes off.

It’s the CrowdWave technology…Ted has it on his list. It measures the direction and intensity of movements in the crowd, and it’s used for these games between sections and for the trivia questions.
I will note that the crowd is now 0-2 in the “arms pointing” questions on the season (as well as 0-2 on the NHL rules trivia questions, but that involves texting). I guess we could blame the technology.
I’m guessing that the people that really know the answers want no part of that foolishness.

I am completely floored that there is actually any sort of technology behind those goofy games. I figured it was just like the crowd decibel meter from previous years.
Agree that Neuvy left a good number of rebounds in the high percentage areas. Also thought that the team D did a very nice job collecting rebounds and sending them to the low percentage areas. Good game for the team in front of the net on the whole.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I think he can handle those rebounds better than most because he always seems to be in a good position when the puck squirts back out.
In fact, I don’t think any of the goals that got past him ni the past three games have been off of rebounds
http://video.capitals.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=849
Yea true. Was one the D should have seen though
His don’t seem to be as bad as varly’s. Varly’s rebounds come with a thunderous BOOM off his pads. If you record the boom and play it backwards you can hear a demon voice yelling “REBOUND HERE!”
I thought Neuvy also made some poor decisions playing the puck behind the net. There were at least two occasions that where it was too close for comfort, but I’ll chalk it up to inexperience for now. Overall, a solid performance.

I’m sure I know one of the times you are talking about, when he had to wait for the puck to clear the trapezoid line with a forechecker bearing down and then he outwaited the forecheck and went the other way. Definitely close, but I liked the poise.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Yeah, that is exactly one of the instances I am referring to. I was thinking that he may still be adjusting to the speed of the NHL vs. the AHL. Playing the puck with a incoming forechecker like that is certainly a riskier option in the NHL, but he managed to pull it off. At least he didn’t play the puck outside the trapezoid like Varlamov did in one of his early games. Of course Varley was brand new to the rule at that point, having limited North American experience.

Troubling stat from last night – the Caps were 9-for-22 (40.9%) on defensive zone draws, including Boyd Gordon’s uncharestically poor 4-for-11. And the team’s 5-for-14 in the O-zone was even worse. If Brads can’t go – and if prior experience with “lower body tweaks” is any indication, he won’t – then I guess we’ll see Stecks and Gordo on the 4th line. Don’t see any way that Hendricks doesn’t get a sweater, by the way.

More on last night’s faceoffs:
Per TOI, the Caps had 15 5-on-5 draws in their own end. The defensemen on the ice for them, were Erskine (9), Carlson (8), Green (5), Schultz (4), Alzner (2) and Sloan (2). Clearly Bruce saw 4-74 as his lockdown pair last night and tried to hide 27-89.
Also, the Caps had seven O-zone draws. Laich was on the ice for six of them, Backstrom/Knuble just one, Ovi just two. Odd. Looks like the 2nd line was getting offensive opportunities and being protected a bit from taking D-zone draws.

Rocking the Red since 1975
If I google Hockey Town, the 3rd thing that comes up (after a restaurant and a rink) is the Official Detroit Red Wings website. 4th thing that comes up is the link to wikipedia that defines it as the nickname for Detroit, Michigan.
I appreciate the efforts the team is taking to get the city motivated, but that video bugs me. Rock the Red was creative, easy, and fun. The hockey town thing is just ripping off the wings, and really seemed forced and uncomfortable.
Tampa Bay already ripped off the Wings (hoo hoo) with their “Hockey Bay, USA” promotion.

I’d argue there is a major difference between claiming to be “a hockey town” and claiming to be “Hockeytown.” I think we’re going for the former, and it doesn’t bother me all that much even though DC is all about winning.
I am over Rock the Red myself.
Yeah, they’re not in the video saying “We are HockeyTown” – they’re saying “We ARE a hockey town”. Big difference, imo. For one thing, claiming one is a hockey town is significantly less arrogant than saying one is HockeyTown (although I guess you could say the same for “America’s Hockey Capital”…but I like that, sounds less pretentious).

eh. Only if you’re already a fan. And people who are fans have more important things to occupy their time with than slogans. Those who are only casually aware of Hockey don’t automatically think, “Detroit.” The Caps’ — admittedly weak — attempt to increase the consistent fan-base is seemingly aimed at creating the idea that being a hockey fan is very DC. And DC is all about being as DC as possible. I swear this town could sell cat poop on a stick for $40 if people who just arrived thought it was a DC tradition. Those who are only casually aware of Hockey don’t automatically think, “Detroit.”

12 guys at a Caps after game auction winning a date with Todd Krygier and Steve Leach to the shagrin of a few jersey wearing single ladies who were digging into their sofa cushions but came up short against a bunch of drunk guys from a local adult house league who spent way more than they should have (for a good cause, though): $535
Cases of Molson after Krygier and Leach came to our adult house league game (we did win a date with them, after all) and coached us hackers into a finely tuned machine: $66
The relief felt by Krygier and Leach that they didn’t have to spend an evening saying things like, “no, really, this is fun” and “yes, we are single” and “no, thanks, I have to get up at noon for practice”: Priceless.

I think this just perpetuates the meme that he’s not focused enough on hockey. Maxim is just a skin mag, let’s be honest. I like Green and I think he can walk and chew gum at the same time (or undress and get his picture taken wearing bubbles), but if he wants to be taken more seriously, just say no to gratuitous photo spreads. He will get made fun of for this by his many detractors (Duncan Keith would never do this, we’ll hear). Maybe I’m wrong and it will be a substantive article, or focus on many of the top NHL D-men, but substantive Maxim article is pretty much an oxymoron.

I couldn’t disagree more. Mike Green, like it or not, is one of the top defensemen in the NHL and one of the faces of one of the most exciting teams in the sport. Much like all of the other star players, he needs to get used to showing up for these types of committments….both mentally and physically…because they’re not going away. How is a Maxim photoshoot any different than how he’s probably going to be portrayed with HBO cameras following him around 24/7?
I’m saying the fact that Green is really affected by nay-sayers is a really good point. But you’re also correct in that anything Green does in the spotlight can be skewed to fuel his critics. His only option would be to avoid any and all public appearances, which would then cause people to criticize him for hiding/avoiding the media.
Basically the dude’s gotta go see a therapist and get his head straightened out. Oh wait…

Plenty of hockey players have done photo shoots in the past. To include Crosby, Ovechkin, Avery, a good chunk of the Rangers team.
IMO it doesn’t matter if the article is “substantive” as it’s free advertising for the Caps and the NHL as a whole.

I think it does play into the perception that people outside of DC have of Green, some of whom vote for the Norris. They will know about this type of photo shoot which plays into the lifestyles of the rich and famous promoted by Caps PR in the past, such as his cars and his condo’s renovation. They will not know about his charity work, such as treating a kindergarten class to lunch because the children were raising money for So Kids Can. Since someone from Caps PR was going, I wonder who set this up-his agent or Caps PR. If the latter, they are likely more interested in PR for the team and free advertising for the team than in how Green is perceived by others when it matters.

It’ll be interesting to see how Semin responds. Sometimes he seems a lot more willing to involve him teammates when he’s playing with another elite talent.
I’d settle for fewer flybys and less floating in the D-Zone. As good as he’s looked on the PK, he’s looked very bad in his own zone at evens sometimes.

Didn’t like it when Flash was on the top line in training camp. Why switch when the top line is showing signs of waking up?
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
To change things up. If anything, I’d move Knuble down. Backstrom is switching things up on his own, Ovie seems to be in kind of a rut and you can’t ever move him down. I’d echo the sentiment in this thread to move back to the Care Bears line just to see what happens. Flash has actually been pleasantly surprising in his play and I don’t necessarily dread him potentially getting 1st line minutes so much. Between that and the PK success, it’s some real end times stuff going on with this team.

Interesting to see Henricks on the third line over Steckel and Gordon. You have to like the shrewd (to this point) signing by the Caps, but if you’re doling out $1.9M to two depth centers, they shouldn’t be guys who getting beat out by someone who was a UFA two weeks ago.

I think this is a really great point:
A few games of leniency from the NHL is understandable, because injuries happen; but if the Devils are allowed to compete with 16 or 15 skaters on multiple occasions this season in an effort to avoid making more difficult decisions with regard to the cap, then they should suffer consequences, either financially through fines or in the loss of (even more) draft picks.

I wonder how much control Lou has over that, but I agree.
I also think the “Marty plays too much!” card is overplayed. He was injured a couple years ago and he came back, presumably fresh, and still managed to blow a playoff series with two late goals in game 7. I just think he’s losing his reflexes, and whether or not he’s sharp he just isn’t the same. But rest surely couldn’t hurt.

Yeah. The Flames got, what, 5 games or so with a less than 20 roster last season? The NHL can’t really step in too early if they’ve already let a team get away with something similar in the past.
By my count it was 5 games, 2 seasons ago, April 2009…
Calgary Flames
April 2 18 skaters
then
April 3 16 skaters
April 6 17 skaters
April 7 17 skaters
April 10 15 skaters
April 11 15 skaters
Playoffs
April 16 18 skaters
Note: Latest news out of NJD is that Rolston has a groin injury and it might be a sports hernia…seeing a second specialist today. If Rolston heads to LTIR it solves the Devils roster/cap issues for awhile. Also, as expected Leblond to minors and Mair signed.
Info:
“Lamoriello said Rolston already saw specialist in Philadelphia — Patrik Elias saw same Dr. for his sports hernia.”
TGfireandice Tom Gulitti – Devils beat writer
Rolston to LTIR would be doubly annoying – for Rolston it sucks, but mostly for getting Lou cap relief that he doesn’t deserve. Talk about the luckiest guy in hockey.

Personally, I’m shocked that the NHLPA isn’t up in arms about the 20-man roster to begin with. If every team did that, that’s 90 jobs for their union members gone.
Then again, the Devils are a cap team, so the total salary is the same… which just goes to show that the union is more interested in the fat cats than the rank-and-file (which we already knew).
I wonder what the general reaction would be if a non-cap team went with a 20-man roster…

Well, Steckel is terrible (or, if you’re an optimist, at the very least comes nowhere near close to replacing MoJo’s speed) so he’s out for the 3rd line, and I’m guessing they don’t want to go 3 lefties on the 4th line so Gordo is out as well. Not that surprising to me.
Steckel was a failure at 3C, period. It’s a waste of time to put him there unless he miraculously turns some corner he should have several years ago. Given Hendricks play, he definitely deserves a chance at the 3rd line. Chances are it won’t pan out, of course, but you have to give the guy a shot considering his intensity level and now production. Credit due to Gordo to getting the pass to Hendricks, but Hendricks snaking it through to Fehr was something you wouldn’t expect out of a grinder.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.
Yep, Hendricks has definitely been playing the way he needs to.
I’d take Gordon over him in a vacuum as a 3rd liner (free Hendricks up to play with some more jam on the 4th line), but I also don’t disagree with the lefty-vs-righty thinking if that’s what it is.
Gordo can do 3C, definitely. I’d almost like to see what he could do with Chimmer and Fehr since he’s pretty damn sneaky and has good eyes.
Better to see if Hendricks deserves those minutes over a call-up from the AHL now.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.
Also, if Sabourin isn’t on the ice, should we assume that Varly is “100%” and Sabourin is on his way to Hershey?

I don’t have a DVR at home (working on that). How long does it take for Caps’ games to become available in the archives after they’ve finished? I had to step away during the second period yesterday and didn’t get to record the scoring chances I wanted to. If it’s somewhat timely, that’s something I’d look into.
