Unfortunately, results for the Bears against the baby Flightless Fowl were not so wonderful but at least they got the Bettman point.

Kyle M. from RMNB tweeted last night that Holtby punched a guy last night during their game. I’d imagine he would have been ready to go during that last period if he was playing at Verizon.

We were a little late getting to Verizon, so I missed the opening, but watched it online. I suspect it will grow on me after a few viewings – it wasn’t horrible, but it seemed to lack both the fun of two years ago and the intensity of last year. It proabably will help seeing it with crowd noise as support.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I think the start with Run This Town could have been awesome…after the initial build up get super intense with some highlights and something referring to last year’s regular season success and this year’s “Stay Angry” focus on the Cup. This video just seemed like an ad, not an intro video.
Way lame, if you ask me.

This thing seems interested on building lifelong hockey fans among the kids, something that is actually credible. You’ve got a generation of kids right now who don’t connect to the Nats, watch the Redskins perpetually FAIL, and see the Caps as potentially the defining town of their childhood. “Building America’s Hockey Capital” seems determined to get that “generation effect”. I like the kids stuff and I like the District stuff with Fort Dupont and putting some of the kids in there.
That said, the slogan to me seems devoid of motivational power for the players and the rabid fans and falls short.
C+/B- for me.

Well exactly. Have a campaign to build a generation of hockey fans. Don’t make it the focus of your intro video.
If anything, I fell like 8 year old boys would respond more to a pump up highlights video than what they came up with instead.

There’s a way of getting that message across to the kids with the images while keeping the rabid fan focus there. It’s kind of tricky mix for them if they want to mix “family friendly” with passionate make life hell for Flyers and Penguins fans.

I didn’t like last year’s at all.
The music in this one is great and I liked the kids in it as part of the building a hockey town theme. It was perhaps overdone with the guys saying it but at the game last night we did find it rousing. It could be interpreted as defensive but it didn’t come across that way to me last night. It was more of how far we’ve come as a team and as a franchise.

I guess I give the Caps some credit for including the kids, which is a creative move that I haven’t seen before but. . .
The music is lame and cliched, even by arena standards. AC/DC might be horrendously overused, but that’s because they don’t suck. I always thought that Nu-Metal died back in the early 2000s, but then I hear crap like that. . . I guess the WWE needs entry songs, so there’s always a demand. There are so many good punk/hard rock/metal bands out there that don’t suck and would be much better. There are several songs from the Sword’s new album that would have been great; it’s a shame that they let the mullet-crew pick this one.
The whole “we are a hockeytown” thing is lame in extremis. It speaks to the general lack of self-confidence that permeates the entire organization. I don’t mind the “building America’s hockey capital” thing because it’s honest – this is a work in progress.
I suppose it’s somewhat better than last year’s video, with the weird workout theme, but that’s not saying much.

I agree, almost makes the video seem too “defensive”…? (Is that the word I’m looking for?).

It is defensive. The part where Knuble, Green, Ovie etc. go “we are a hockey town. No really, we are! We have fans and everything!” is a little much. We know we’re a hockey town, we don’t need the reassurance.
Also, no kids in intro videos please.
I thought the kids were kinda cute. Then again, I love Mites on Ice.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Too bad they are wearing Bruins colors.
"Because the game is not just about fighting no more. " D.J. King
First, the kids are from Fort Dupont (that’s their colors) and there’s a message in that. It would not be quite the same message if the kids were from, say, Ashburn. Don’t think they didn’t choose it purposefully.
Second, there may be disagreement on where/when to use kids, but as a parent of 3 youth hockey players I think there’s never been enough to tie youth hockey to the Caps to help grow the sport in general around here. I’ve always heard Dallas has done a great job of this. It’s getting better, though.
Third, maybe they’re just trying something different, trying to reach a different demographic. I think they already have those who simply like somethng to get their own adrenaline pumping. Granted, the only people who are going to see it are those at the game, but if such a video gets a few kid to say, “I want to play hockey, too, like that kid,” then it’s a good thing. It’s one reason I like the Mites on Ice (one of ours did it; he was the only who started as a Mite).
Indeed, those are the Fort Dupont colors. I loved the fact that the video made the point that getting local kids into hockey as players will make them lifelong fans of hockey. Add in the Mites getting into Caps colors reinforces that point. You build through the youth. (I too am a parent of a youth hockey player—he lives and breathes hockey).

I’ve always wanted to have a Caps intro done with the first and last parts of ‘Guerilla Radio" by Rage Against the Machine. Super-high energy, great bass notes and it’s easy to clap or stomp to. Or Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson (although either may have been done before, I don’t remember the videos before the last couple of years, aside from Pretender).

I’m sorry to have missed your blog when originally posted. It was great watching the three earlier intros and then the whole song. Very prescient of you. The change is fascinating—the first two are on the Caps as individuals and with an emphasis on youth. The last two are far more team oriented and aim for more maturity. Fascinating to watch them sequentially.

more worrisome is the fact that he was paralyzed temporarily.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Possibly a seizure. He was in a crouch, straightened, threw his arms out and fell backwards. Forgetting the time immediately before isn’t unusual.
It did look like he signaled to the bench right before he went out. I’ve seen guys pass out before in sporting contests, but not like that, when in the game but totally away from the play. When it happened I was fearing the worst, big time.
Yeah the way he went down was terrifying. I was thinking stroke or heart attack. Not that a seizure is much better, but hopefully something not as serious as the aforementioned two.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.
When he went down and wasn’t moving anything, not even his hands, I feared that he was paralyzed. Years ago, a BU hockey player had gone down (due to a check by the opposing player) in their season opener and he ended up paralyzed. Except, in the case of Pavelec, there was nobody on either team around.

Question for someone who was more sober than I was last night:
What did Carlson get a misconduct for?
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Flagrant heroing
Actually, I suspect it was this rule being applied…
46.16 (Third Man In) — A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident. This rule also applies to subsequent players who elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same stoppage of play. Generally, this rule is applied when a fight occurs (emphasis added).
Carlson wasn’t being whistled for fighting (he went off for roughing), nor was Johansson, but he was the “third man in” in this instance.

While he didn’t get many GHH of his own (one, I think), he was known for the rough side of the game, as well as a decent scoring ability. Carlson wouldn’t necessarily have to get all three in the same game often to be known for it, but he would have to do each often enough for them to be known as a big part of his game.

Masisak:
After a third period that saw five fights, the third guy who could be missing is Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond. He jumped Washington rookie Marcus Johansson and earned an instigator and game misconduct penalties, as well as a fighting major.
If Leblond did get the game misconduct, that third man in ought to be rescinded, right?

A misconduct in that situation would be rescinded if Leblond had been called for a match penalty (intent to injure), which he was not (he could have been called for such a penalty had Johansson been injured, under Rule 46.15). I don’t believe the situation as it unfolded requires the misconduct to Carlson be rescinded, but I believe it could be (the penalty is entirely at the discretion of the referee).

Is there any point to rescinding the misconduct after the game is over? Aside from the fact that JC now has a shitton of PIMs, are there any other ramifications?

It matters. Three misconducts, and you sit a game, and each subsequent misconduct carries an increase of a game suspension.
The club may appeal to have the penalty rescinded up to 48 hours after the conclusion of the game.

Im sure GMGM was up into the wee hours putting the captions on the video argument that RAHJC should not have been given a misconduct due to the non-participation of MJ90 and failure of referee to intervene quickly.

The Caps have gotten misconducts rescinded before, so I wouldn’t be surprised if RAHJC’s went away.
Although he was yappign at the ref as he was being escorted to the penalty box. So maybe the misconduct was for calling the ref a cocksucker.

So what a weekend to be down in Leesburg for a wedding. Missed both of the games, although was reading updates on here and through my brother’s texts. Had radio feed through my phone at least but couldn’t find anywhere it could stream video well. Sounded like an awesome game last night, Carlson continuing to show why we all know he’s going to be a damn fine D man and possible Calder candidate this year. Green fighting? Epic and sad I missed it. I like the fact Johansson won 7 of his 11 draws. He’s in the perfect place playing with the perfect 2 linemates right now. For us to be able to nitpick errors that are so easily fixable both with practice and just more game experience is a wonderful thing right now. A lot of this season’s importance to a playoff run may be his development and him getting the on the job training he will playing those 3rd line pivot minutes.

This is the only link I can find to the fracas. Not sure if BB jumping up is in there, but the reaction shot of the bench was pretty priceless. Sasha either wanted to fight or was screaming “oh, the humanity” in Russian. If King had dressed I wouldn’t have been shocked if he came off the bench there.

Classy, and also aware that the Caps have guys that are both fast enough to catch him and big enough to do some damage when they do…if the Devils are interested in roughing up star players, that is.
Which is why I imagine that PL3 won’t dodge King when they meet in November.
Side note: how the hell do the Devils think they can compete when they have 11 forwards, and one of them plays 3 minutes a night? Who couldn’t tell that this was going to be a problem?

Agree, Fat-Daddyo. It seems like such a waste of a roster spot to keep an enforcer on the Devils’ roster, especially when they’re short on cap space anyhow. It would not have been unusual in the 80’s or 90’s but in the cap space era, an enforcer with no other skills is an unaffordable luxury.

Team Cohesion
Does anyone else think that the Devils may have paid the Caps a humongous favor last night by starting all that chippy crap at the end of the game?
This is a Caps team that has been criticized in the past for somewhat soft play. This is also a team with a ton of new/young faces who are still getting their feet wet in the league and on the team.
I have to imagine that players like Carlson, Alzner and Johansson feel like “one of the guys” after sticking up for their teammates, or in Johansson’s case, watching his teammates stick up for him. Integrating into a new team is tough for a young player, but the Devils may have just accelerated the process for the Caps youngsters.
It may turn out to be nothing, but something tells me that last night, with its combination of the Caps displaying:
A) a killer instinct that has been lacking in years past,
B) team cohesion that’s tough to come by with a bunch of new/young players and
C) team toughness that in years past has been more of a slogan than an actual attitude,
might turn out to be a defining moment in the season when we look back.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

Does anyone else think that the Devils may have paid the Caps a humongous favor last night by starting all that chippy crap at the end of the game?
Definitely. I was thinking/musing about the same thing, especially with the youngsters/rookies being integrated and feeling like they’re really a part of the “guys.” The win was great, especially following a putrid performance against the Thrashers when they collectively looked lost out there, but the extracurricular activities and how the Caps’ responded were just as galvanizing.
I got the feeling there’s a sense of belonging, both from the vets’ perspective and the youngsters, that they’re all in the same boat and have each other’s backs. It’s huge when a rookie like Johansson realizes that his teammates are willing to stick up for him and when Carlson and Alzner demonstrate that they too will stick up not only for their fellow rookies/youngsters but other teammates as well.
As you said, integrating into a team as a young player is a process and it usually takes a while (over the course of a season and in other cases, a couple of seasons) but what transpired with Devils last night definitely was a catalyst in accelerating that process. Time will tell whether last night was a defining moment when we look back on the season, but I can’t help but think that it was a good step forward for the team as a whole in terms of forging their identity. Maybe it’ll take a few more of these moments and games, but intangible things like this go a long way and are solid foundations for building team cohesion over the season.
Glad to see the process get started sooner rather than later … Thanks Devils John MacLean.

Somehow I doubt that. It was more likely MacLean had his squad go into goon mode to try and establish some sort of (physical/intimidation) superiority over the Caps. Superiority in a game they were the less superior team in just about all aspects after the middle of the second period.
It was a short-sighted attempt on MacLean/Devils to put some sort of stamp or mark before the next tilt between the teams and serve notice. Not sure they were successful in that respect as it seems the Caps might have benefited from the fracas, as D’ohboy points out, more so than the Devils.

I didn’t see any other Caps players, but I could of easily missed them. Last skins home game I saw Ovie, Green, Backstrom, Fehr, Alzner, Carlson. If you hang out where the skins players exit the stadium and cross the street into their controlled access parking lot, the caps players come by because they park in the same lot. Ovie walked past with Valeria but didn’t pay attention to the crowd calling his name. We could see him taking pics back in the parking lot though, that must of been when he took the pic with D-Hall. I took the pic above from D-Hall’s twitter. Ovie tailgates in the lot with Cooley, you can’t see that from where they let the crowd stand, but Cooley’s talked about it on the radio.
Thanks vt. It would be fun but crazy if they were out tailgating with the masses!

Someone entered the numbers wrong. Note 42 saves on 40 shots.

Those are the save on the shots the Bruins didn’t even bother to take, knowing they weren’t going in.

Could be. Perhaps it was the Coyotes’ stats guys that night. I wish they had given Stempniak credit for more things, cuz he’s on my fantasy team.

He’s just that fuckin’ good
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

That he can save imaginary shots. Guess that he saved 40 real shots plus 2 imaginary shots.

In which case he definitely deserves better than third star. You’d think one of the geniuses at nhl.com would notice this.

From Tim Leone’s blog on tonight’s Bears win over Rochester Amerks:
Exiled Washington Capitals forward Michael Nylander played for Rochester. He had no points and committed two minor penalties.

Nyls had the game-winner last night against the Marlies. Brian Burke was watching the game.
In other former Caps hockey news, Broda and the Houston Aeros defeated Giroux and the Oklahoma City Barons yesterday. Broda was 2-0-2, +2 and third star of the game, and Roo was 0-0-0, minus 2 with a ten minute misconduct for “abuse of official.” Oof.

I know Broda can’t skate, but neither could Andrew Brunette.
I hope we didn’t repeat a past error because someone didn’t “look the part.”
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
He’s also not very big. Not tiny, but not a guy that has Fehr’s size to compensate. I agree he should have at least gotten a look considering his obvious goal scoring ability. How many years did we bring Dubuc to camp? Broda has to be worth a look.

The thing I find really surprising is that the team’s willing to give contracts to guys like Pinizzotto, Bruess and Beagle, but Broda couldn’t get one. We’ve got grinders coming out our ears. It’s probably no great loss but. . .
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I agree. The grinders seem to at least have upside because of their relative skating ability, but if you’re willing to take a chance that those guys might pan out to be a 4th liner I don’t see how giving Broda a one year deal hurts that bad. I guess they might not want to use up the contract, but he seems like he has upside if he can figure out how to play despite his skating. LOTS of poor skaters with great finishing skill have made GMs look bad. I hope Broda isn’t one of them.

I hope he makes Minny look like a smart team for picking him up for free. His game grew on me a lot as I watched the Hitmen through the Memorial Cup last year, and I think he’s a focused and smart hockey player. With decent hands and a bit of an edge.

Just for fun, I took a look at the posts on “In Lou We Trust”. Surprisingly, the fans were not as negative as I would have thought, given the team’s performance. There were a fair number of posters I recognize from here. Fans were also trying to reassure themselves (and fellow fans) that NJ has gotten off to bad starts before, including last season, and posted related data.
One comment I thought was funny on there. They compared the fight of Kovy and Green to taking a Ferrari to a demolition derby. Great comment and so appropo. Related to that, speculation on whether that was one of the highest salaries among fighting participants.

HA! I just figured out Mackan is Marcus Johanson…..I thought this whole offseason we had a center prospect named mackan……..
Sorry….a tad slow here………………..
Don’t feel bad! The other night, I discovered I did not know where the “Search” function on the NHL.com site was or that they even had such a thing. Guess my old eyes had trouble seeing a gray box on top of a black background and that “Search” box was in an odd location.
BTW, the Japers “Search” function is easy to find.

There’s a glossary there that gives a rundown of what was current as of earlier this year.

Great photos. So sharp and clear and perfect moments captured. Keep sharing please.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

Well can you at least guarantee fifty?

Sellouts at Verizon Center
Oh, and I am not sure of the exact number, but it’s been 60+ consecutive sell outs at Verizon Center for the Capitals. Who said DC isn’t a hockey town??
Big thanks to this man for making it happen!
I think tomorrow will make it 61 in a row. Verizon also has a new capacity of 18,398 after years of it being 18,277.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
Didn’t they also say they would sell standing room tickets to every game this year? So expect to see a lot of games with an extra 100 attendance.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I think it’s just for high-demand games like Flyers and Pens. Although I would have expected standing room for opening night. Perhaps being able to sell club level seats for individual games negated the need for standing room?
