“You can’t help but wonder how much Green’s exclusion from Yzerman’s team will hurt his Norris Trophy chances.” Good point.
Depends. If the Canadians go down in flames in Vancouver, maybe not so much.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I hate to think of how much pressure Team Canada’s under now. They’ve dropped both U-17 and the WJC to the USA. Team Canada had better deliver in Vancouver, I think. I have to wonder how that affects them, or if it does.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I saw a Pronger quote the other day saying just that – that the WJC loss adds to their pressure.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I wonder how reluctant some of the AHL teams were to let their guys play in the tourney. No doubt Hersey has so many good players they could spare Carlson.
I’m not aware of any AHL teams that wouldn’t let their players play. I think it’s the NHL team that has to release the player but unless the guy is playing significant minutes in the NHL they almost always release the player.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
when you win 11 in a row, and a few of those without Carlson, then i think that says something about the depth…..

Lisa Hillary is Stupid
Did anyone else see WaPo Live last night? Lisa Hillary took the opportunity to remind us that she really is an idiot. As they discussed the USA winning the Juniors, she made the comment, that “alot of people had some real questions as to whether John Carlson should have been playing in the tournament”. It’s a stupid thing to say on so many levels it makes my head hurt.
by mechanicsville on Jan 9, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions
She wasn’t saying she did, but I’m sure there were complaints that “a professional” shouldn’t have been playing. The more egregious error on WaPo Live was Ivan Carter (dolt) not being sure of the age level — he said 18, and no one corrected him.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I don’t think that’s an incorrect statement. People had concerns over whether it was a good idea for Carlson to take time off from his AHL team to play in a junior tournament.
I understand that it’s not an incorrect statement. It was poorly timed and made in a forum where Ivan was having some fun with the USA victory and that a “Cap” played a big part. She was completely tone deaf. All I’m saying.

Lisa Hillary is Stupid
I’m not so sure it’s actual stupidity that she brings, but rather her signature negativity. In her efforts to appear in-the-know and insightful and a sober and serious journalist, she is ever-eager to find the one tiny negative morsel in any story in front of her. For instance, in her post-game interview after the Caps have utterly hammered their opponent into smithereens, she will ask a player something like, ‘So, there was that span of 3.7 seconds in the second period, when your team played like moronic zombies. How do you feel about that?’
I attribute all this to Lisa Hillary confusing mindless critiques and nit-picking carping with astute and thoughtful journalism. Rookie errors on her part. But I wonder how the players put up with her unrelenting bellyaching. Tiresome, if you ask me.
True. But I’m sure there’s some sense of, “Jesus, if Yzerman didn’t think he’s one of Canada’s top seven defensemen, what kind of idiot must I be if I think he’s one of the League’s best?”
Wait, nevermind – that would requires some sort of self-awareness from a reporter. Carry on.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Oh, no doubt. But if Yzerman drops the ball and Team Canada doesn’t come out with gold, or worse still, doesn’t come out with hardware at all, then that brings into question “did we overlook something? Maybe Yzerman was wrong.”
Who knows? Guess we’ll see.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
IMO, if the Canadian blue line is shutout in the medal rounds, Canada doesn’t win gold, and Green wins the goal scoring race for D-Men again, I think the Norris becomes his to lose.
If the opposite happens, Green’s in trouble.
by BradleyFightingVehicle on Jan 9, 2010 11:21 AM EST up reply actions
I think the over-arching point here is that Green’s snub could impact the Norris race, which I think is a fair assumption, one way or the other.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m probably playing stupid here, but I can’t be sure if your “good point” is for real, or snark. Granted, most of the press wasn’t putting Green on the Olympic team anyway, and few are giving him the Norris at the midway point. And all of us will admit to his occasional brain cramps. But that presumes that no other elite defenseman has them ever. They’re just riding the “he doesn’t play well in his own zone” meme, and it’s getting old. And false.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Steve Yzerman is on record as saying that Drew Doughty is a better all-around player than Green. By definition (that being the citation for the award), Doughty would be more deserving than Green for the honor.
With all respect to Yzerman….

It’s a transliteration from a language with a completely different phoneme set. Picking a nit here, but no spelling is going to completely get the pronoiunciation correctly when we’re using the Latin alphabet to spell something native to Cyrillic.
Similarly, we don’t get Arabic or Chinese words right either, we just wing it. For example: Quadaffi versus Kadaffi.

Actually, this is something I’ve always been curious about – why doesn’t Varlamov have an accent over the second “a”?
If we’re translating from another alphabet, that would be a real pronunciation aide…
You're the future of this team's defense Karl. . . Now get your ass to Manitoba!
Which accent are we talking? I’d have to hear a Russian pronounce his name to figure out if where the stress is – I’m hella rusty.

Just some sort of mark to denote the fact that it’s Var-LA-mov and not VAR-la-mov.

Well, for a Mac user, it’s not so tough – just option+E, then the letter. Et voilá. :)
You're the future of this team's defense Karl. . . Now get your ass to Manitoba!
Not tough, but adding two extra key strokes to each time you need an accent is less than ideal.
That’s a neat trick though, beats the hell out of using the alt codes for ascii map. You can make a circumflex accent with option+i, too.
I guess he probably would have such an accent if he played for Les Canadiens de Montréal. You’re right, though. It’d help out people who recognize the accent grave.

No word. Probably a couple of years away.

I’m guessing Holtby’s start last night finally qualified him for the League Leaders, so he’s 1st in GAA and 2nd in SV% at the moment, and 17-4-3/2.17/.929 overall.

Carlson — the first Caps rep of my younger daughter’s generation. (or sub-generation if the Generation theorists are correct).
My elder daughter’s generation is (very) well represented on the Caps (and they showed their stuff on Tuesday and have the current captain.)

Doubt they get paired together at such a young age. Probably both will play with a veteran next year (assuming JC actually cracks the Caps lineup out of camp).

I used to talk to Bob all the time after games. He loved to talk hockey. That picture looks close to him but the USA jacket is what doesn’t make sense. He was a big Canadian through and through. One of my favorites Caps from the 80’s. Do we know what year this picture is from? 1984?
Dave Christian joined the Caps for the 83-84 season. Carpenter was traded away in January of 1987. My guess is 1984 (Reagan was more likely to do goofy stuff like this while he was running for reelection), but it might be 85 or 86.

The Jack Adams is about as big as a joke as a trophy can get. It’s never actually awarded to the best coach, but rather the coach that sparked the biggest improvement between seasons, and no offense to the guy, but that includes Brucie. It’s virtually impossible for a coach or team that’s consistently good year to year to win, especially with a Boudreau coming around every season (see Dave Tippett).
Just look at the history of the trophy.. only once since the trophy was first awarded in 1974 has the award gone to the same coach in back to back years. Compare this to the Hart, Byng, Vezina, Norris, Selke, etc who’ve all seen a plethora of back to back winners.
You know you suck when you preview and still miss the typos.

Today actually turned out to be horrible for me after I was so optimistic. My car was towed because of a state emergency from that dusting of snow we got.
I drove an hour to here I left it to pick it up and it was gone. Then had to drive an hour back home to get my title to then drive another hour to get a release form from the state police in jessup md. After that I’ll need to pay around 400$ to some fucking scum tow company and drive another hour to pick it up.

I would hate to finish that game if I was the devils because you “start” a game down 3 nil. The game is basically playing for personal stats. I’m thinking the devils are assuming a loss and moving on.
This is good for the prudential center though because they get a good overlap in concessions.
Everyone at the game will need to hold on to their ticket stubs (for the continuation). Let’s hope for everyone’s sake, the continuation would be sooner and not later. (And what happens if someone gets traded for either team in the meantime? Do the team play shorthanded — as if a guy left the game with an injury or was ejected?)

Oh man! didn’t even think about that! If thats the case I wouldnt go back to see and almost assured loss to the home team.
In nhl you can’t finish the game b/c of no lights, in khl it’s b/c of fights. Todays game between
Vityaz Chekhov and Avangard Omsk only lasted for 3.39 minutes then they ran out of players 651 penalty minutes and nine players from each team were forced to leave the rink. Interesting. I would have liked to see Jose get the nod tonight as well. Guess we’ll find out what happens.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
You expect Brucey to have any kind of tact with his net minders?
I am easily satisfied with the very best
Maybe this is tact, thinking about Ed F’s point. Jose has struggled against Atlanta – he’s only had one good game under his belt so far since his lapse. Isn’t pitting him against a team he’s got a terrible record against throwing his confidence to the wolves? Start him against a team he does well against for 2-3 games and then try it.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I think consecutive starts would have shown that the org has some measure of confidence in him, and maybe that gives him some confidence.
I am easily satisfied with the very best
I tend to think start slow with him at this point. Maybe it’s a difference of approach. I expect him to start vs. Toronto on the 15th.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I had Neuvirth starting all along. Theo has stunk in his last 2 starts in ATL – 8 goals allowed in 36 shots and some were awful (remember opening night last year?). Let him play against one of the Florida teams, preferably the Panthers, to get his confidence back. Kovalchuk and company have his number. Besides, 30’s start on Tuesday against the Habs was very good too so he deserves the start.
Those are good points. I’m one who never thinks to look back that far in history, and maybe should start doing so before opening my keyboard.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
i do the same thing, its easier looking at the short-term patterns but i think BB does a good job of trying to help his goalies rather than hurt them. i did think jose would get the nod today since this is all about his confidence but i suppose the panthers game would be better for that. plus for future reference it is good to see how neuvy (i like the y better…) continues and whether he continues to improve, i’m still hopeful that varly will be back soon…ish.
How much better does he have to play to get back to back starts? His positioning was great, neither goal was his fault and he made the big saves when called upon. BB says JT69 needs to get his confidence back, he is a going to be called upon in the future, he’s been very professional about everything, blah blah blah . . . and then he sits him. This just reminds me of all the things BB said as 92 was starting to be phased out.
So he had a good start. That’s fine, but that doesn’t erase all his inconsistency. That doesn’t mean he automatically gets another start. He’ll play again but I don’t see why Theo “deserves” the next start just because he didn’t shit himself the other night. He’s the back up goalie. He isn’t going to be anything other than the back up goalie. So play him like a back up goalie.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

I like the third jersey idea—“blue sweater with Weagle and lace-up collar” is what I’ve been thinking for a long time now. But I think the striping on the sleeves should stay consistent with the current home and away jerseys. Also, the “capitals” lettermark doesn’t look very good on the shoulders, because it’s too busy for such a small patch. It doesn’t look good on the Bears jerseys, it won’t look good on a Caps third. The shoulders should either be blank, or have a new patch—maybe the DC flag?

lastest trade rumor
souray for fehr, della rovere, theo and draft picks…thoughts?
matching cap numbers, solid dman with a cannon…
only reluctance is no veteran presence come playoff time.
Where did you hear that?
1. I don’t think they trade SDR, there is no one else in the org. who fills that hole.
2. I doubt they go with two rookies, one injury prone at that, for the playoffs.
3. It strikes me as overpaying, that’s just me.
I am easily satisfied with the very best
Maybe without draft picks. May as well trade fehr since BB won’t ever like him.
Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.

heard it on edmonton sun and hockey buzz
souray is thinking of waiving the no-trade clause…that’s why it came up again.
also, goalies with barely experience, but they did that last year…also heard if that happens, they pick up a vet like biron (terrible) or someone of that nature.
somehow it works, salary cap wise since souray’s deal is 5.4 a year.
SDR is nice, i like him, but feel like they can draft players like him. dime a dozen.
I wouldn’t call pests with a decent offensive upside, that like to fight, and aren’t distractions or out of control, a dime a dozen players.
Now drink with me deeply of the bourbon, scotch, and rye until such time as we are fighting drunk.

Captains of their team, Gold and Silver in the WJC, etc. Even if they are a dime a dozen (which I disagree about) the key is finding them in the draft so you have them for cheap and not having to overpay on the FA market.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Thoughts: Don’t bring Eklund’s crap around here.

Classic Eklund trade.
- The Caps don’t really need a guy like Souray given that he’s basically passable on defense and potentially lethal on the powerplay.
- The Oilers have no reason to want Theo
- Souray has two years left at $5.4M. The Caps don’t take on that salary for that caliber player with where they are now in terms of cap hit.
- Edmonton has like 4,698 fairly young wingers, why would they want another one?
Also – the Caps are said to like “good locker room guys” which Souray might be but he brings about two dump trucks worth of off-ice drama with him. Might be the wrong vibe to introduce into a team that needs to concentrate on a championship.
IS KEPTIN NOW
I’m listening to that Caps internet radio station that Pepper posted about yesterday, and I just got Lynard Skynard’s “Sweet Home Alabama” on the Locker Room channel. Who do you think picked that one? (I actually love the song, don’t judge.)
A Pair of Off the Topic Questions ... sort of
1) Any Rink Rats make it out to Columbia for some free ice time last night? Can’t believe I missed out on that … Was at the Sculpture Garden downtown to partake in a phenomenal cardiovascular skating workout that involved doing endless laps in one direction lame public skate session for friend’s birthday.
2) Any Rink Rats up for hitting some pickup + stick n shoot at Kettler then catching the game at Baileys right after?
"Bobby. Can you fly, Bobby?" -Clarence
"Clarence, no!" - Bobby
I’ll most likely already be at Baileys as there are at least 3 games on at the same time that I plan on watching. (UK basketball, GMU basketball, Jets- Bengals) You may not get sound for the Caps game until Jets bengals is over.
Yea, but anyone around here who roots for anything other than a bus wreck in that game should be kicked out anyway.
NFL is the king when it comes to sports bars. I know this firsthand. Some sports like the NFL, no matter who is playing, trump better games in other sports. When the Caps make the big screen here, everyone knows I had a hand in it.
The Caps have never won in Atlanta on a Saturday night (0-3-1 vs. the Thrashers, 0-1-0 against the Flames).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
There is always a first time for everything.
That’s been my mantra all weekend since I’m a Ravens fan. Now I can apply it the Caps, too.
I hope tonight is the first time that the Caps can win in Atlanta. But those losses were when Atlanta was Hotlanta. It’s now Coldlanta. (Or at least I assume that Atlanta is also caught in the cold weather spell that seems to be dogging the entire East coast.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
Yeah, even Key West is cold. I think the only warm spot in the continental US is San Diego.
I like your theory as well as any.

Ray Ferraro
I watched the highlights of the Caps-Sens game, and they used the TSN feed. Ray Ferraro made more intelligent comments in 5 minutes of clips than Laughlin has made all season.
Sigh.

Any examples? I cant stream w/ audio atm. I don’t mind Lauglin, he makes me feel at home with a crazy uncle. haha That said Chick Parm seems to really know what he’s talking about.
On the Gordon goal, he described exactly how the Sens’ defense broke down, and he did it in 15 seconds with words. It’s the kind of thing that Laughlin can’t do with a full 4-minute segment, the telestrator, and an entire period to prepare.

Also, he pointed out that, on Backis’ 1st goal, Knuble was out of the play because he had broken his skate.

I didn’t see the CSN feed, so maybe Locker caught it, but Ferraro also explained why the first Baxter goal made Leclaire overplay him on the second one and allow that wrap around. Basically how one soft goal turned into two.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Yeah, the sound was cutting out on my highlights for some reason, so I didn’t hear that one. Still, it’s more than you get from Locker:
“Great play there by Backstrom.”

I have always like the “Big Ball of Hate”. Good player and solid commentator.
A man gotta have a code
Every single time I listen to a broadcast by Ferraro, either I learn something new about the game, or he points something out that I may not have seen. To me, that’s the ne plus ultra of color commentary.

Locker is ok, sometimes he talks to fast and messes himself up. I remember he was trying to say “fury” but instead it came out “furry” and “fuzzy”

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but I find his analysis to frequently be either wrong, irrelevant, or cliched.

But Locker’s grammar is so good, I’m able to overlook his poor analysis. And I’ll never tire of the “bouncing biscuit”.
