Carlson's "No Look" Shot in 20 Frames
On first look, I wasn't sure if Caps prospect John Carlson had lifted his head while uncorking Tuesday night's tournament-winning OT goal in the WJC finals.
On second look, it's clear he stared down opposing defenseman Colten Teubert for the entire length of his shot...not bothering to peek at the goal mouth until the 20th frame.
Still-shot deconstruction, after the jump. (Imagine red MS Paint arrows coming out of Carlson's eyes.)

Btw, this is what’s known as “Ron Jaworski Style”.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Rage actually has taken a new job and moved (or is moving), all so he can once again comment on The Rink. OK, maybe not just for that reason. But I’m hopeful he’ll be back soon.

Nice. I’m rec’ing it for the concept and out of patriotism.

True Americans

Here’s to America’s colors, the colors that never run.
I saw a “_ese _olors _ever _un” bumper sticker in red and white the other day. It had the red and white stripes of a stylized American flag on one side, with a gap where a field of blue with white stars would look great.
It made me sad. Bumper sticker makers of the world, if you’re going to make “these colors never run” stickers, please pay a little extra and buy the good blue ink.

Funny how everyone thinks of Battle Hymn of the Republic as an American anthem when really it’s a Christian paean:
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish’d rows of steel
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”
Let the Hero born of woman crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
It was; it was written as a response if you will to “John Brown’s Body”. It’s still more Christian than patriotic in feel, though.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Perception > Reality
And “When the Saints Come Marching In” was originally just a folksy little spiritual with tons of apocalyptic references commonly used in funerals, but now it’s a fun jazz number everyone attributes to New Orleans.
And Tommy Hilfiger used “Fortunate Son” as a patriotic theme when it’s very clearly not.
And one time my brother used my GI Joe action figures to overtake the Autobots’ headquarters, when clearly that would never happen.

If you scroll up really quickly, it looks like the goalie made the save and kicked it right back to him. I prefer that version.
Down Goes Brown - Unapologetically nostalgic for the past. Brutally realistic about the present. Grudgingly optimistic about the future.
Memories that will last forever. Probably.

I just watched the TSN coverage of the Carlson goal, and it seems like they every sentence they made sure to remind you that Carlson was a pro. Canadian hedging.
Hell yeah he’s a pro. A pro U-20 player. And a champion to boot.

A lot of the Canadian postings were “Our best guys are in the NHL already, their best are right there on the ice. How would they be if Stamkos and Tavares were out there?”
And my thought was “Probably better, looking at the result.”
Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.
Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.
Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.
I honestly think that an element of spoiledness played into it. Canada had overwhelming talent and really had it too easy. The US was the only team in that tournament that gave them serious trouble (they never played Sweden). They were too used to winning easy.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
“I just want a hockey player with frickin’ laser beams coming out of his eyes, is that too much to ask?”
Sweet breakdown of a sweet goal. Thanks!
