Real American Hero: John Carlson
Capitals prospect and Hershey Bear D John Carlson lets rip on a gorgeous gold-medal-winning goal in OT of the WJC Finals.
The entire overtime period can be seen on demand at TSN.ca.
TSN's Bob McKenzie deems the "rambling, gambling" Carlson USA's hero of the tournament (skip through the Eberle love).
And finally, a post-game interview with the once-and-future Washington Capital.

Incredible third period and OT. Watched it at Bar Louie after the caps game.

Yeah I saw it at RFD, promptly knocked over my chair as I stood up and cheered and high-fived Knee high to a duck. We were AWESOME.
And someone needs to mix footage of team USA highlights with the theme music from Team America World Police pronto. I’d even settle for and endless loop of that OT winner by Carlson for 3 minutes.

it’s been said before, but the caps were dangerously close in 2008 to drafting both the WJC finals hero and the tournament MVP, C jordan eberle.
tough to look at (another example of an off-the-board pick coming back to bite GMGM?) but TONIGHT there’s no question, if i could only have one of eberle and carlson for the caps, it would be carlson:
20) Michael Del Zotto, D, New York Rangers
21) Anton Gustafsson, C, Washington Capitals
22) Jordan Eberle, C, Edmonton Oilers
23) Tyler Cuma, D, Minnesota Wild
24) Mattias Tedenby, LW, New Jersey Devils
25) Greg Nemisz, RW, Calgary Flames
26) Tyler Ennis, C, Buffalo Sabres
27) John Carlson, D, Washington Capitals
Ugh. That is painful. Eberle is small though. 5’10 174 lbs according to hockeydb.

What’s unbelievable is how John Carlson fell to 27th in that draft. If i recall the rumors were he originally was going to play NCAA hockey and not junior hockey in Canada, because of this his rank fell. I give GMGM big ups to get that pick and to also only give up very little to get it , really puts the icing on the cake. All he gave up was a, not living up to potential, defensemen and a 2nd round pick for the next coming of Ray Bourque!!! I am very happy we have him on our team for years to come. As for Gustafsson, I’m not willing to write him off just yet. Like Fehr, his injuries have greatly inhibited his growth as a player and just will take some time to move in the right direction.
I think most of it was just that he was from the USHL and didn’t get scouted well enough. It was known, or strongly rumored, at the time of the draft that he was headed to London (although I guess he hadn’t officially committed to that point) rather than NCAA, so that shouldn’t have been the big obstacle you’d think.
The problem with the AnGus pick was its value. He wasn’t worth a first rounder, and he certainly wasn’t worth trading up for.

I agree with that, but they were afraid that the Edmonton Oilers were gonna take him, hence the trade up for him. I’d much rather have Jordan Eberle or Mattias Tedenby currently but mabye Gustafsson can change his current circumstances, is all i’m saying, like Fehr.
Was it EDM they were concerned about? I never heard the story on that. I always wondered if someone pulled a sick bluff on McPhee.
This is why GMGM was worried
From Wiki,
“Gustafsson was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Gustafsson chose to play the 1978–79 season in his homeland Sweden, but he signed with the WHA’s Edmonton Oilers in March 1979. Gustafsson made his North American pro debut in the WHA playoffs that spring, picking up a goal and two assists in two games. When the Oilers merged into the NHL, the Capitals reclaimed Gustafsson’s rights from Edmonton.”
Drafts are all woulda, coulda, shoulda, though. At the time, I remember hoping they’d take Tedenby, so it’s all kind of irrelevant. Drafts are hard.

no doubt, but the fact that we (1) wanted a center and (2) drafted a center, makes it tougher. i think i wanted tedenby, too, now that i think about it.

I remember saying “That Carlson kid looks weird.”
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
He is ugly, but we can’t all have hair dressers and make-up people like Crosby!

I think he’s grown into his facial features or something. He’s a lot less frightening now.

He definitely has grown into it a bit,
also his hair is much better!

I am easily satisfied with the very best
Still gotta work on closing his yap, though. He’ll get there with time.

The other key there is look how his jaw has sharpened up. The cleaner jawline gives him a much better look.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Yeah, that’s it.
We’re a weird bunch.

Yep. He still needs to learn to smile, though.

I did enjoy this paragraph:
And the source of those tears, oh buddy it’s big Johnny Carlson. Not only does he score in regulation, he straight-up clowns a Canadian defenseman and goaltender in overtime to snap the hosers’ run of five straight gold medals. Carlson seriously has to be among the greatest Americans of all time. Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Lewis and Clark. Men who dared. And what Carlson dared to do was fake pass the whole time and fool some rock farmer from Moosetooth, PEI’s pencil-neck geek of a son into not even thinking he was gonna shoot. But he shot. Like John Glenn into orbit. Maybe you don’t get that reference. Has a Canadian even been to space? Has one even been on an airplane? Hard to say. Can’t understand a word they’re saying with all the "yuhknows" and "fer shers" and "Tim Hortons." Can’t make head or tail of it.
