Tuesday Caps Clips: Canadiens @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of this the third meeting of the season between the red, white and blue and le bleu, blanc et rouge from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Habs Eyes On The Prize for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- To refresh your memory, the Habs beat Michal Neuvirth 3-2 just before Thanksgiving in D.C. and the Caps took the rematch in Montreal a week later thanks to some late-in-regulation heroics and Nicklas Backstrom's shootout goal.
- Updates from the injury front, where Backstrom sounds like he's good to go, Semyon Varlamov is out for another two weeks, and Alexander Semin is "fine," but left practice early. Hmm. [WaPo]
- Fresh power rankings are out with the Caps down two to fourth at CBSSports, down three to fifth at SportingNews, down four to eighth at The Hockey News, and down seven (!) to ninth at CBC.
- A second Mike Green GEICO ad has surfaced. Check it out. [FanShot]
- Elliotte Friedman's weekly must-read didn't include any Caps nuggets per se, but a Lou Franceschetti mention is always noteworthy. [CBC]
- Hey, what do you know - no Alex, no ratings. [Truth & Rumours]
- Varly on the Olympics and the tradition of the Rookie Dinner. [RMNB]
- In case you somehow missed "The Caps Rap" yesterday, check it out (with bonus interview with the creator). [Puck Daddy]
- Fox5 did three spots from Kettler yesterday morning which... umm... well, good on them for being out there on Zorn D-Day. [MyFoxDC]
- Tonight's the gold medal game at the World Juniors, and John Carlson (tied for the tourney lead in plus-minus) is definitely one to watch. [CBC]
- Oh, and Marcus Johansson has been suspended and won't be taking part in the bronze medal game. [Hockeysverige.se (h/t ice warrior)]
- It doesn't get any braver than this young Caps fan. [Age 30+ (h/t Ted's Take)]
- Slightly off-topic, but The Boss has a new book available for pre-order, and we're happy to pass word of it along as all proceeds are going to charity (and no, that's not a euphemism for "Michael Nylander's salary"). [Amazon via Ted's Take]
- The man who is 13th in Caps history in wins is now on Twitter. [@mike_liut]
- If you're interested in former Cap Keith Jones but don't think you can stomach a whole book about him (much less one co-authored by John Buccigross), you might want to check this out. [Flyers]
- Bear Tracks! [LDN]
- Plenty of Hershey love in the top AHL stories of the decade (err, the past decade, that is). [The Hockey News]
- Yes, we're up big in the Caps Blog-Off finals. But now is no time to take our foot off the gas - vote if you haven't already. Do it. [NHL Arena]
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1983, "Washington's Doug Jarvis played in his 600th consecutive NHL game, as the Capitals extended their team-record road undefeated streak to nine straight games (6-0-3) with a 5-2 win over the Red Wings, at Detroit." Jarvis's iron man streak would eventually end at 964 games, an NHL record unlikely ever to be broken.
- Finally, big day for birthdays, with Joe Juneau turning 42, Mike Grier hitting the big 3-5 and Mathieu Perreault celebrating number 22. Happy birthday to all.

Hey, what do you know – no Alex, no ratings
The Philly area ratings were awful. The WC came in third behind the PSU/LSU game and the Mummers Parade. Good thing the Philly Wing Bowl isn’t until Feburary 5th, or it might have finished fourth.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I can understand losing to Penn State (which is what I was watching, flipping to the WC at half time), but the Mummers thing is quite an indictment. The parade has been losing money and relevance for years, and most people who care about it go watch in person, so I’m real surprised with the tv ratings.

More like the people in that city have finally tired of watching that train wreck of a hockey team that brings about zero entertainment value. Makes me almost respect those folks. Almost.
A man gotta have a code
Except that the team was pretty hot going into the WC and looked like it turned it around. For one of the strongest and most respected American markets it’s shameful to have you fan interest drop like that in half a season.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
I was in Philly for New Year’s 2009 and we were definitely flipping back and forth between WC and Mummers Parade.
Love the Mummers Parade.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, so do I. And so do many Philadelphians, just not as many as there used to be.

The funniest part was Elliot being concerned that Lou would make it out alive with the Yanks gear he had on. Trust me, even at his age, I’m pretty sure Lou could have have taken on the Southies & any of those snot nosed punks from South Philly.
A man gotta have a code
Heh, when I first watched the Departed, I had to ask my buddy from MA if Southies actually existed.

Semi related, but I recall a story on Deadspin a couple years ago, but there was an epic story about how Brendan Shanahan and a couple teammates went to Yankee Stadium to watch the Blue Jays play, and a few fans tried to start a fight with them (even knowing who they were) and got epically beat down as a result, with the moral of the story being don’t pick a fight with someone who knows how to do it.

I don’t know if anyone besides me watched this last night, but USA defeated Ontario last night in the U-17 Hockey Challenge and took the gold medal. Final score was 2-1; I felt bad for the USA goalie, who pitched a shutout until 19:58 of the third despite Ontario piling it on and being all over the US in the third frame.
A couple of guys to watch for jumped out at me:
- Rocco Grimaldi, who at 5’6" and 175 might never make it to the NHL because of his size, but was a force all over the ice, backchecking, blocking shots, carrying the mail on the rush, crash the net, taking Canadians off the puck, and generally making an absolute nuisance of himself at both ends of the ice. At one point he probably would have scored if he hadn’t collided head-on with the Canadian net.
- John Gibson, the USA goaltender. Just … wow. One save he had someone sitting on him and it still didn’t go in. Positionally sound and cool as a cucumber, I look forward to seeing him at a higher level in a year or two.
- Ryan Murphy took Ontario on his shoulders in the third and it seemed like he was leading or in on every rush. Wicked shot – Gibson was just that good.

1) Word will likely be out before game time once the new captain is announced.
2) It would be cool to see Ovechkin (or whoever) with the newly-sewn on ‘C’ on the jumbotron as the camera zooms in on the jersey at Verizon. Everyone stands up and gives the new captain a standing O.
If they respected him so much, why the hell did they trade him? I am also annoyed at that “respect for Clark” comment.

What happened to him? I missed it but heard he is not playing tonight.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Maybe I’m looking at this with"Swedish Eyes" but I think it’s a big difference Johansson doesn’t stick out his elbow he got it tucked into his body but I wouldn’t have a problem with the argument that D’Amigo weren’t in control of the puck anymore making it a late check.
Cormier on the other hand put his elbow out and I’m not completely sure it wasn’t deliberate and the puck is on the other side of the rink.
D’Amigo was looking down Rödin weren’t. D’Amigo himself thought that it was worth no more then a two minute penalty and that it wasn’t a dirty hit. He also said that it was the turning point in the game.
I watched it last night.. it looked very tame. It’s another instance of a guy about to miss his check and then reflexively expanding his body to try and make some kind of contact. No malicious intent at all.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I’ve watched it repeatedly and just couldn’t fathom why that’s 5 and a game, let alone a suspension. It’s a rather lame “hit to the head” but I guess in Juniors they bring down the hammer. D’amigo wasn’t looking and had his head down, which is why it looked so violent, Mackan just skated by and hit him with his shoulder. Eh.
The Caps are a dirty organization top to bottom. Go Flyers.

It isn’t clear if Marcus was suspended by the IIHF officials, or benched by his coach or Tre Kronor officials. Usually it’s not good to have the team captain collecting game misconducts in the semifianls, and Sweden invested a lot of resources in this tournament.
ALEX, FЯEE
I haven’t read anything specific about that but I assume it’s for the rest of the tournament meaning one game.
Ha. What else could they suspend him for? His Junior career is essentially done; would they really suspend him indefinitely in to the future? “You can’t play in any IIHF tournament for X years!”
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
McKenzie has just said that Mackan is NOT suspended, that the Swedes assumed he was. They submitted the lineup without him, and now he can’t play. Ugh.
"I know it holds 17 1/2 beers."
I just posted the same thing. I can’t believe they could be so clueless, how could you not know if your player is suspended or not. Oh well the game starts in 10 minutes I will be watching non the less.
Yeah Heja Sverige! Apparently the IIHF meeting was last night and they still didn’t bother to find out that Johannson wasn’t suspended so the mistake is all on Sweden. No Swedish media have picked up on McKenzie’s twitter not even the network that is broadcasting the game are saying something about it and they are in Saskatchewan. I want someones head on a plate for this.
Unless it’s another Nylander to Russia blunder from Mckenzie.
International play is pretty consistent with dropping the hammer. If a guy goes down injured you can bet that there will be a PIM and probably a game misconduct. Check this out. Notice how you hear the in-arena announcer call it a 2 Minute elbow (just after the 1:00) mark but when Olesz stays down Phaneuf ends up with a 5 and a game.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Because of BB all I think about watching the clip is what a nice pass from Fleischmann right before Olesz get hit and more importantly is he playing center.

46.1 Elbowing – Elbowing shall mean the use of an extended elbow in a manner that may or may not cause injury.

Johansson’s elbow wasn’t extended. It was tucked at his side. He didn’t even lean in, or anything, in fact, he might have just skated by if D’Amigo hadn’t turned into him. Complete and total utter horse-crap, though I expect no less from officials towards the Caps…

I’m with you. The hit on D’Amigo wasn’t that bad. I think it was 2 but it wasn’t nearly as egregious. Mackan’s biggest problem was that he wasn’t going for a big hit on D’Amigo to start. He looked like all he wanted was a glancing blow and that led to the elbow/head contact. If he had seen the head down and just lined him up and buried him it wouldn’t have been an issue.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Cormier’s is intentional. Not sure what you are watching or why you are giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
That is the most blatant elbow I’ve seen since Domi on Niedermayer. I wouldn’t give Gandhi the benefit of the doubt on that play.

Most blatant elbow not involving the letters “P-R-O-N-G-E-R” you mean.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
I figured that was a given. Pronger’s elbows are in a league of their own. (That league happens to inhabit the faces of Mcammond and Holmstrom.)

Certainly Cormier got higher. shrug I usually give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Most times, it ends up being right – never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by being stupid.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Whether or not it was malicious (how can an elbow to the head not be malicious?), he goes out of his way to put his elbow up to the head. And it’s half a rink behind a play. There is no way that is unintentional and there is no way that is a hockey paly.
Now drink with me deeply of the bourbon, scotch, and rye until such time as we are fighting drunk.
by Steckel Me Elmo on Jan 5, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
shrug Definitely not a hockey play, but I don’t think it’s intentional. Without getting into the guy’s mind, we’ll never know, so it’s a moot argument.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
What part isn’t intentional? The knock out or the moving the elbow?
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
The knock out, although looking at your post I see the difference in where we’re thinking. I’m thinking it’s not premeditated as in “Oh, maybe I can hurt him and knock him out.” No real hockey player does that; they don’t make it that far if they think like that. Besides, it’s split-second reaction – there isn’t time to process that at the speed this game goes. Did he intend to hit him? Yes, and from that angle, a clean check is impossible. Did he plan to hurt him? I doubt it.
Is it a dirty check? Yes, on looking at it again. Is it premeditated intent to injure? No.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.

Disagree that it cost them the game. They killed the 5 minute major and had momentum until stud prospect John Carlson of the Washington Capitals blasted a slap shot past stud prospect whatshisname of the Florida Panthers. The soft goal right there, followed by a USA SHG, is what cost the game. You could say Mackan would have been helpful to have on the ice, and you’d be right, but it didn’t cost the game.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Team Sweden captain Marcus Johansson believes he may have got a bit of a raw deal when he was slapped with an elbowing major and game misconduct in the semifinal game against the USA, keeping him out of Tuesday’s bronze-medal final.
“I think so,” he said Monday. “Maybe it was, but, when I saw that he turned, I tried to not hit him. I couldn’t disappear and I still got a collision and I guess I hit his head, but I tried to keep my arm into my body, but it’s bad luck.”
ALEX, FЯEE
So Johannson think it was the wrong call the guy who took the hit thought it was the wrong call. What do they do? They slap a suspension on top of it, that’s just great. It makes me wonder if Colin Campbell is moonlighting for the IIHF.

Shit would hit the fan. The difference is that the NFL doesn’t have 80% of its franchises in Canadian markets. There would be no NHL to speak of without the U.S., so Canada’s Game my ass.
The NHL would be a shell of itself without Canadian labor. They need US money and Canadian bodies, that’s just reality. Is there any doubt that Canada churns out more quality hockey players than any other country? No. Does that make it the exclusive province of Canada, or justify their attitude? No.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
The real shame about that is that it leads to a sport that’s not going to build. Like or hate Bettman, he’s willing to shake shit up, and if you let Average Joe Mountie be the commissioner, we’d have teams in 12 Canadian cities, 11 of which would be English speaking if he was an Anglophone, and he’d have squads in Minnesota, Boston, Colorado (Cause it’s cold, right? Let’s ignore numbers on fans), St. Louis, New York, and Buffalo. The game can’t grow and mature that way.
It’s easy to forget as well that the NHL, as a matter of choice through the other league’s early expansion eras just sat at 6 teams until they couldn’t afford to. And even then, LA newspapers were calling it a joke that they had a long season to only eliminate two teams.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to defend Bettman so much as I am to attack that mindset they seem to have (And I’ve seen it, as I know multiple Canadian fans who on blogs and in person have told me they’d contract most of the NHL’s squads and go for a 12 Canadian team division and a 12 American team division).

No they don’t, they love you regardless. Can’t you be more like Rush?

yeah…….that whole female thing….and the hair thing….and the not fat thing…..and I don’t smoke thing……and I’m a registered socialist thing…..
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
You’re a socialist and you don’t like Rush?! Have you HEARD “The Trees”?
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
My hate of Rush (the Band) stems from that little town I lived in that had one radio station that played the same 8 songs in rotation. “Tom Sawyer” twice an hour? You’d hate Rush, too!
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
No, I’d donate money to the radio station.

It ain't easy being cheesy

Yeah, you’d have to have abnormal pain tolerance.

According to Bob Mckenzies twitter: Classic WJC story. Marcus Johansson was NOT suspended for today’s bronze game. He and Swedes assumed he was suspended. He wasn’t. But Swedes submitted official lineup minus him and now he can’t play in bronze game. Team officials say sore wrist but it’s all a mistake.
kinda interested tidbit from the Sports Bog: “Bruce Boudreau (hired Dec. 26, 2007, on a permanent basis) has been the Caps’ coach for 741 days. That’s more than twice the service time of Saunders, Riggleman, Onalfo, and Zorn’s successor, combined. Boudreau is in the middle of his second full season, but he will have already seen three Redskins head coaches.”
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Patrice Bergeron celebrates his Team Canada selection with a prompt injury. Well done.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
