During the CSN pre-game broadcast for the Su 31 Jan 2010 Caps vs Bolts game, Joe B and Locker quickly reviewed the Mike Green "elbow" hit on Michael Frolik from the Fr 29 Jan 2010 Caps vs Panthers game. These replays feature a cross-ice angle of the replay.

Huh. Hadn’t seen that angle before. Looks more shoulder-y than elbow-y. Still, one would assume that the league office has access to this look as well, and they’re mostly ruling on the fact that the hit was a pretty clear pre-meditated retaliation. Add in that the shoulder contact was awfully high on the chest, and could be interpreted as an attempt at the head. I guess “elbowing” was the best call at the time on the ice. Ugh, it’s so close. I need some frame-by-frame action.
Don’t get me wrong, I get what the league’s doing, especially in the wake of what went down in the Quebec league. But this angle leads me to believe it’s not as reckless as I first thought.
I’ve watched this over and over, as well as doing some frame-by-frame. I’m left with the impression the forearm lead is definitely out. Elbow … possibly. A case can be made for shoulder lead, but it appears what makes contact first is back of the arm / triceps area.
All this does is irritate me more...
And I’m sure BB feels the same. It was an elbowing call. Marginal at best. If you want to get into video replays, look at the 17 second mark where he is actually DUCKING when the hit comes, therefore putting his face at elbow level. 3 games is absurd. To use this as the poster child for “the kind of hit that has no place in the game” is absurd (Sorry, JP).
But as BB said, it’s basically like fighting a traffic ticket.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
Looks like triceps/ back of the elbow to me. Which in my book is still an elbow.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
I won’t argue that, sir, but are we debating that it was an elbowing minor or that the guy tried to duck it and wound up taking it face first instead of in his chest. My contention is Frolik ducked the freight train, not that Green was head hunting. That’s a pretty big difference when weighed against a 3-game suspension.

Hasn’t changed my mind. Still looks like headhunting to me. I still think 3 games is too much.
