Semin's 300th game
They put it up on the video board late, and he just kind of sat there, not even a smile.

In the last ten games, we have won more than half the number of games that the Hurricanes have won all season.

Yes, but according to Tripp Tracey if the season was 102 games long instead of 82, the Canes would be challenging for a playoff spot.
The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn from the crow.
NHL.com had it right...
…“Captain Clutch”.
I was getting nervous there in the 3rd period, they seemed kinda flat. And the Flash penalty was borderline (although he should have just cleared the puck anyway after he stole it instead of trying to run it out of the zone and got it stolen back then took the penalty).
But the team is finding ways to win and thats what good teams do when its crunch time.
Et lux in tenebris lucet
Well today they found a way to win. Over the last few games the team has just plain dominated, so they dont need to find a way. But you are correct, I love winning games when they look flat and out of it.

Wait, Milbury had something nice to say about the Caps?

Geez, I might have to catch the replay on NHLN tomorrow. Oh wait, they cut the intermissions.

Well I wouldn’t be watching it for the game. It was the Pens, after all.

pens better figure out how to win playing real hockey soon. They’ve relied on winning in the shoot-out far to often this season. Never mind that they put 40+ shots up and still couldn’t win in regulation or OT.

ok — break it down then….
i counted 7 SO wins for Pittsburgh. That’s 14 points. Suppose they actually lost them all….they would have only earned 7 points. That would drop them only one spot in the standings as they are as of 2/1 (from 69 pts. to 62 pts).
Hardly “inflating” their standings…..
If anyone has “inflation”, I’d say it’d be the teams who have around 7 OT wins or more….that would include the Caps.

If you’re implying that the refs shouldn’t have called Flash, I respectfully disagree. It was a blatant penalty and even Flash didn’t seem to disagree as he skated to the box.
This is not a game of who the f*ck are you...
The Flash penalty was definitely warranted, it was a classic Sasha penalty, its the Backstrom call that infuriated me.

"My left hand has pretty much turned into a claw anyway."
Kinda tough to think of 10 things to say about this one, I guess. It was a real humdrum game.
Thought Sloan had a very nice game. Ditto Backstrom. Third line had good pressure and generated some chances. Semin created space for himself, but just couldn’t get it sorted out in time to score.
AO looked like he was half asleep for the bulk of the game. The goal and the primary came on the basis of his prodigious talent, and that’s it.
That’s the first time in a while we’ve seen the Caps screw the pooch in the third, and it was reminiscent of their earlier efforts. A collective failure to move their feet, which lead to great zone time; a failed clear; a goal; and then a penalty.
On the plus side, they got their feet moving after the Bolts tied it up, and once they had the lead they locked it up pretty efficiently.
In all, kind of a clunker, but the opposition was as draggy as the Caps, and they got the points. Hopefully they wake up for Boston, but they’re clearly not playing as well the past couple of games, which is typically the death knell of a winning streak.

He didn’t look like he had a lot of jump, and spent a lot of time just kind of floating looking for a pass. He had several opportunities to make a play, and never could get it going.
Happily, he almost never has two bad games in a row, so if I were the Bruins, I’d be fearful right about now.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Heh. 8:28 train is a good one. Boston ought to be easy meat for the Caps, but we’ll see if the Caps can get their game back.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Exact same thing happened to me. I said to my buddy sitting next to me: “man, he just can’t get any shots through”. Goal.
Lundin had a great game for the Bolts. Seemed like he was spoiling all of AO’s shots

I was thinking some of this myself. I think based on the play in the last two games that the winning streak is just about over, and I’m now concerned for Tuesday since the practice tomorrow is optional.
On the bright side, if it does end prior to the Olympic break, that may be better for the Caps in the long run, since it won’t wreck a winning streak.
I’m hoping I’m wrong about this. And if I’m not, no winning streak lasts forever, and 10 straight is still a hell of a run.

Despite the poor play of the Bruins and Rangers, back-to-back wins in each city is a tall order. We’ll need the version of the team that went to Pittsburgh.
10 in January is nice, but it’s not going to last forever. And that’s fine, really. What matters is 16 in June.

Rec’d for:
they’re clearly not playing as well the past couple of games, which is typically the death knell of a winning streak.
At least they aren’t facing particularly hot teams in the next couple, and even if they come off the hot streak the Olympic break will keep the slide from being prolonged (hopefully).
The goal and the primary came on the basis of his prodigious talent, and that’s it.
Disagree. That shift in particular AO looked determined to get a goal, but I think he had a few of those today. I actually thought that line was looking snake bit after the ridiculous number of chances they’ve had the last couple games despite the points they were putting up. Backstrom is ridiculous. He is making things happen basically every shift, and you could easily say that he’s been the best player on the team for the last 3-4 games. I guess that means AO is off, otherwise we’d be saying he was the best, but I think it’s more of a statement about how great Nick has been.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Tarik’s post gamer sez Nick’s pricetag goes up by the day and Ted will just have to hand over his checkbook. Lulz.

Backstrom is really confident in his all around game. In his first two seasons we would’ve never seen him try and dance around a defender, but he did it thrice by my count last night.

He had a couple of well-timed pinches that could have lead to goals, some good shots and played pretty good D all around. Aside from looking like he was skating in slush, which is usually the case, he worked pretty hard and I fail to see how he was responsible for either of those goals. The first was a ridiculous tip, second was just nice movement of the puck on a PP. And I’m usually the last person to defend #4. The box score doesn’t tell you everything.
"If you want money go to the bank, if you want bread go to the bakery if you want goals go to the net." - #21
On the first goal, he had the puck with time and space behind his net, but rather than being patient and making the correct play, he did the usual thing:
“OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! IHAVETHEPUCKONMYSTICKGETITOFFGETITOFFGETITOFF!!!”
As a result, the Caps turned the puck over inside the blueline and scored. Furthermore, he looked shaky each and every time he was out there against Tampa’s speed line.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Erskine vs. any speedy line is going to be a bad matchup. I wouldn’t say “shaky”, I’d say slow. Thought he did a pretty good job of recognizing when he’s going to get beat to the puck and playing the man instead of the puck when he had to. But you’re correct, speedy lines are going to skate circles around him.
"If you want money go to the bank, if you want bread go to the bakery if you want goals go to the net." - #21
It’s nice to see the Caps pull this one out with a workman-like effort. The most encouraging thing about this streak is that the Caps are winning in different ways. Winning when they shouldn’t (Detroit), offensive domination (Islanders), and winning close games (Tampa). That’s the kind of variety you need in a cup-winning team. It seems like all that’s left is an OT/Gimmick win and a shutout.
I also like the way they’re scoring. More often than not it’s crashing the net and digging for loose pucks that’s getting the goals, even though we’re getting our fair share of gorgeous plays, too.

God, I shutout would be nice. If only to clamp down on all the criticism the media loves throwing at our goalies.
Great points, TGoB. Here’s what I said in the GDT
This is a great gritty game. Skill players aren’t having much luck doing their thing. But instead of getting too cute like they might have last year or early this season, they’re skating hard, working hard, cycling the puck, etc.
And they kept at it, too. I loved the maturity on display through the whole game. Solid D, very good penalty discipline (the Backstrom penalty was a ticky-tack call).
And all of it nearly derailed by one inexplicable play by Fleischmann. Tom needs to learn that when you’re on the penalty kill in the third period of a one goal game, you just cannot botch that clear because you’re looking for a nice breakout.
For what it’s worth, it looks to me like Flash had only two shifts in the 12+ minutes after Stamkos’s goal. Semin and Laich had an additional shift, with Steckel as their pivot.
Atta dinnin stick a who!

Gould—Agreed. Last season the Caps would have tried to force passing plays instead of just taking it to the net. This season (and during this streak in particular) they’re just making the right play, which is often to crash the crease.

Draggy kind of game.
No score after 1. Sloan looked good, Erskine looked good, and the Caps closed the first with a couple great forechecking shifts.
Backstrom on the power play from the blue paint, Brooks from the blue paint a few minutes later (with Mike Smith flailing like Wile E Coyote when his rocket skates go wrong). 2-0 after two.
Collective meltdown to start the third. No skating, lots of watching. St Louis with a deflection. Backstrom hook, Flash failed clear which he exacerbates with a hook. Kill the 5-3 but Stamkos blasts one past Theo a few seconds later. Tied at 2.
Caps buckle down, continue to forecheck. Backs collects a loose puck, carries it to O zone, criss crosses with AO, feeds AO, who steps to the slot and snaps one into the left corner. 3-2 Caps.
Caps put on their lead protecting hats, kill the rest of the game, and it’s another 2 points.

This is in D-minor, which is the saddest of the keys. I call it “Lick My Love Pump”
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Observations:
1) The Caps struggled getting out of their own end all afternoon, unless 8-19-22 was on the ice. I’m convinced that line spent 75% of their ice time working the puck around the TBL zone.
2) Tyler Sloan didn’t look too bad today and had a couple of very solid stick-lifts to deny scoring opportunities. That said, he had a gold-plated opportunity from Ovechkin in the slot, all he had to do was miss Mike Smith and he put it into his stomach.
3) Martin St. Louis is really, really fast. Watching him chase down the Caps D-men and forwards to harass them was something else.
4) Defensemen (Poti?) – Alex Semin – Tomas Fleischmann – Alex Semin – Brooks Laich – Goal was a beautiful thing. Semin knew where he was going with the puck before he got it the first time and it was some gorgeous movement to first get Smith down and out, then put the puck on net. Brooks was where he should be, in front collecting garbage. Yummy, goal-laden garbage.
5) Flash, I love your passing, but when you lose the puck in the zone, the last thing you want to do is put a hook into the midsection of Vinnie Lecavalier. Especially when you’re on the PK already. Oi.
6) Steckel, I love your reach and your faceoff abilities, but you’ve got to get off after that 3-on-5. The Bolts were just playing around you on the point and you were stuck on the ice, too tired to do anything, but unable to leave the zone.
7) Ovie, I understand that you hate shin pads, especially Mathias Ohlund’s shin pads, but good lord. Although, that goal was a thing of beauty after an equally beautiful pass from Backstrom.

As much as I have criticized the Caps for playing Sloan over Alzner, Sloan had a very solid game tonight. A number of the Caps D have been playing some of their best hockey recently, so that is promising. Like the rest of the team, they just gotta do the same thing come spring time.

My concern is that after the trade deadline, we’ll see Sloan (and ShaMo and Erskine) go back to their old selves. I think the Juice trade had the effect of putting them on notice. I’m afraid they might think they’re safe after the deadline and let up.

Erskine looked like what he always is/has been: a guy who really can’t get caught out against a speedy line. He looked great playing against Malone, and he looked lost playing against Stamkos and St Louis. And it showed on the scoreboard.

Yeah, defensively he’s the same as always. But he’s been contributing a lot more in the offensive zone recently, getting his shot off and getting the puck to the net to create chances.

Honestly, I think you can say that about a lot of the Caps’ D over the past three weeks. Methinks the coaching staff finally “took the shackles off” and told the D to start pinching/joining the cycle. Poti, ShaMo and Erskine have all contributed more offensively in the last few weeks than they did the last two years altogether.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Agreed. It’s even more impressive that the D has been able to step up and contribute in the offensive zone without giving up more scoring chances to the other team.

A couple big saves and some timely posts probably color that perception. Early breakaway to FLA, early odd man rush to TBL, goalies playing well. I’m not sold.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
True, the Poti-Erskine pairing did get caught pinching without the partner covering twice against FLA. But in my defense, I did say “without giving up more scoring chances”, not without giving up any scoring chances. They still have defensive miscues, but they aren’t any more common with the added offensive play.

I think the pairing shakeup because Green was out played a little havoc with the defense. It’s not that they were horrible, but they looked off. It will be interesting to see if Bruce leaves it as is, or calls up Carlson for the trip.

Tried a recap. It is a bit lacking, but feel free to correct meh
I wasn’t so sure what format to follow for the recap, so I decided to go with the ten points.
The players that really stood out to me, in a good way, were Tyler Sloan, Erskine, Backstrom, and Ovechkin. Sloan had a great game all around; he had a bad giveaway in the 3rd period, but contained the volatile Tampa Bay offense and went 1 on the night with 16:30 of ice time. Sloan had great stops and didn’t make any mistakes; which, is a pretty damn good night for him. Hopefully, he starts to truly earn the value Boudreau gives him.
Erskine definitely gets the hard hat of the night, even with a -1 over 19:38 of ice time. He had the 2nd most shots (5), only behind Ovie (612 blocked shots). Erskine looked on top of things in the defensive end, and was able to control a relatively fast Tampa Bay team. Erskine is starting to look a lot better of late. He has a pretty good slap shot, and in the absence of Monsieur Green, he gave the Capitals a good amount of offensive pressure that let the Caps keep the game in Tampa Bay’s end.
Although, Backstrom only ended the night with 2 points (1G, 1A), he played really well the entire night. With Knuble and Ovechkin, the first line dominated Tampa Bay for most of their shifts. They had plenty of very, very close chances, and played a Detroit-like possession game except with offensive chances.
Ovechkin, in short, won the game for the Capitals. He woke up just when his team needed him and scored on a beautiful wrist shot 13:34 into the 3rd. Ovechkin should have had at least 10 more shots on goal; however, Tampa Bay’s back check did an amazing job (they have to when they win, they are the only way TB’s defense can keep a low score) and pressured our lines, heightening the game of the defense. Together, TB’s defensive effort shutdown Ovechkin with a plethora of blocked shots.
The Capitals made a good effort for about 2/3rds of the game. The other third was kept in check by the amazing save sequences of Hart version Theo and the new guy on the team, Monsieur Post. Tampa Bay had three shots that snuck by Theo hit the post, saving this game for the Capitals.
In the end, it was a good effort by the Capitals; however, they were certainly not going on all cylinders like the other games in this streak. Personally, I think it is because they just wanted a win today; they weren’t looking for a blowout. As the play-off races get tighter, and the East gets more competitive, the Capitals will face efforts like this from normally marginal teams. Unfortunately for all the other teams in the NHL, the Capitals’ goalie situation is clearing up, and the defense has gotten a lot better. If you shut down Ovechkin, the entire team can still throw a goal party. If you rain on the goal parade and take your eyes off of Ovechkin, he will waltz right into the high slot and push one right by the goalie.

Very nice recap, Kingz. The top line did dominate; seemed like they were in TB’s zone the whole night. Don’t think Knuble had any shots on goal, but his work on the boards was stellar.
This was the 10th game I’ve been to so far this season, and without a doubt, the quietest crowd. Those shots that hit the posts echoed!
Thanx man i appreciate it!
For sure, it was kind of eerie. They were that much louder though when Ovechkin scored.
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .
I’m convinced fans and Caps tend to sleepwalk through afternoon games. But that first TBL shot off the post would have been loud at a Spinal Tap show—it was a cannon and it hit Flush.
Friday’s crowd was pretty quiet too. I felt bad, because I wasn’t really helping it, but the team looked so flat for a while. It was a little deflating.
I thought this crowd was louder than Friday’s. I thought that was the dead-est I’ve seen the VC this year. Maybe that was because I was exhausted, though.

Nah. this isn’t political. It has more to do with the fact that I’m coming from north of Baltimore, and I work for the Fed, so I deal with tight security day in and day out. I know how much time a tight security check can add to your schedule. Let’s just say that such a security check would be very difficult for me to cope with.

Observations from Section 421
1) I always thought Vinny Lecavalier was a smart player.. he proved me completely wrong and he cost his team a chance at tying the game with 2.4 seconds. When the linesman says “Get out” you get out. If you think it’s possible that a linesman is going to be intimidated by David Steckel (or any other NHL center) think again. Considering linesmen have to sometimes get in between Donald Brashear and Colton Orr, they’re not going to be intimidated by anyone.
2) The first period was very workmanlike, but the Caps effort, while good, was not that great. The second period was outstanding.
3) Despite his 2 assists, I didn’t think Flash had that good a game, and taking the penalty while shorthanded after losing the puck to Vinny was just stupid. Vinny, despite his issues with linesmen, is still a very skilled player and he does stuff like that.
4) When is someone going to actually hit Marty St. Louis? He goes through every game unscathed. Just once, I’d like to see him get bumped and knocked over…
5) John Erskine… what can I say, he was possessed today. A great defensive effort, some solid hits, and one great slapshot…
Okay, 10 in a row! Let’s keep it going!
Let's go Caps!
St Louis wouldn’t be in the NHL if it were easy to line him up with a big hit.

I think Perreault is already elusive enough to play in the NHL, as evidenced by the fact that he wasn’t out there getting creamed left and right during his extended call up. He needs to build some strength and improve his consistency, but it’s not lack of speed or elusiveness that is keeping him from the NHL at this point.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
by Killer_Carlson on Feb 1, 2010 1:11 PM EST up reply actions
Perreault has to work at it, but there are some things you can learn and some you can’t and Marty St. Louis has a ton of raw talent that Perreault isn’t going to be able to acquire no matter what he does.
Let's go Caps!

Maybe he already has some of it that we haven’t seen yet because he’s only played a (relatively) few games.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I agree with this. MP has tons of raw talent; raw talent isn’t the issue with him. It took St. Louis until he was about 24-25 before he stuck in the NHL. I’m sure a lot of that delay was a) getting an honest look because of his size; b) learning how to adapt his size and game to the NHL (pre-lockout rules); and c) getting his body developed to the point where he could handle that strain of an NHL season. I’d say that c) is the one that is holding back MP right now. He needs to fill out and develop his man strength before he can play in the NHL and be a factor for a full year. Skill is not the question.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

The DVR I have is in the Set Top Box (STB) provided with my Fios service. The STB is a Motorola QIP 6416-2. It has a firewire port on the back to which I connect my computer. Had to download the firewire drivers, a zip file that also contains a very simple capture software. If you get all that working, you will be able to capture most live or DVR-ed content. Read the entire web page for an interesting explanation on why and how some content is copyrighted/encrypted, which can not be captured.
The above, if you get it working, will net you raw captures. The included capture software does just that – capture only – and it’s a clunky process of timing the capture to get the exact clip you want. If you have a good computer with lots of disk space, a better process (and what I do now) is just capture an entire game and use video editing software to create a desired video clip, which also adds a level of creativity (titling, transitions, audio and/or video overlays).

What I love about that shift is that they have a nice cycle going, and when they lose the puck along the boards, they just keep right on cycling. It almost doesn’t matter. They just play with the confidence that they’re going to get it back, right there in the offensive zone. And sure enough, they do — twice.

Loved on the highlights on the GWG where the TB announcer said that
Ovechkin slashed the defenseman’s stick out of his hands which led to that open shot opportunity.Um hello on the original play you can watch him throw his stick away because it broke
The safe word will be "hwiskey"
It’s weird. It sure doesn’t look like AO slashed the stick out of his hands, or broke it on a slash. But Lundine definitely tosses his stick away and then stands there with his hands spread in the “wtf” gesture…while AO skates to the slot and scores.
I guess we’d have to see the reverse angle for sure.

More motivation for beating Boston: keeping the streak alive. I’m sure everyone on this team is well aware of the streak and having a lot of fun right now. That should provide sufficient motivation against a non-championship caliber opponent in February.

If the guys are thinking about the streak as motivation, they are in trouble. The only things they should need for motivation are the things BB points out that need improving from this game, and the Boston Bruins.

Boston never was as good as they appeared last year. They had several players simultaneously have career years, and they’ve had some injuries this year.
This year, they’re actually much more like their team from two years ago – a defensive team that struggles to score, but which plays their system well enough to squeak into the playoffs.
The B’s are a team that’s crying out for a deadline addition of some scoring.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Definitely. They’re toast if they don’t add some – this is why I think they might be interested in Kovalchuk if they can come up with the cap space.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I think the general buzz is that Atlanta only sends Ilya to Boston if the package includes Rask or Toronto’s number one—both demands Boston won’t meet.

No way Chiarelli gives up that pick for a rental. I think he’d give up Hamill or Marchand and Wheeler and their first round pick, and maybe Sobotka or Ryder.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
On the other hand, that compensation does sound fair if Boston can re-sign Kovy. So perhaps they make that deal contingent on Boston signing Kovalchuk to an extension within a 3-day window.

I have a hard time with the “Kessel was a cancer” thing. He was, what, 21 years old last year? So yeah, maybe he had some immature moments here and there, but nothing that sounded too egregious. The bigger problem IMO was that Julien failed to accept him into his defense-first system and as a result lost a 40+ goal scorer. Dumb decision and it’s really costing them this year.
Eh, I’m not sure how much Boston is struggling because they are missing Kessel. I think Savard’s constant injuries and the fact that they have several players coming back to Earth after career years has more to do with their struggles than missing a streaky scorer like Kessel. Even last year I think many people (I know I did) had the feeling that they were getting pretty lucky and were strong candidates for struggling in the playoffs and this season. Kessel being gone isn’t the reason why guys like Chara, Wideman, Krejci, Lucic, Thomas and Savard are all having worse years and/or are suffering from injuries.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
by Killer_Carlson on Feb 1, 2010 2:49 AM EST up reply actions
I disagree on the “cancer” thing too. Way too harsh an assessment. Kessel certainly had his immature moments, that is true.
I personally think some of the crap written about him was to justify the fact that Boston was letting him go and so people would feel better about it.
That being said, I feel better that we have Nicky instead, due to the health issues.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Some things have been slowly creeping out about Kessel’s Boston time and that many teammates felt he was milking injuries and didn’t get along with many in the room (Shawn Thornton being the latest), and his character issues were apparently a question before he was drafted.

The teams that are moving are all sliding or are in a bad position. NYR, CGY, ANA, TOR. My guess is that TOR’s main interest is to keep BOS from getting a draft lottery choice. CGY is in 8th seed in the West right now and needs to stop its slide right now if they want to be playing in April. ANA probably won’t make the playoffs but might be stocking the cupboard for next year. NYR still has a shot at the playoffs in the super-tight East and might be looking to retool now to give themselves a better shot at making it.

Maybe the Rangers are not as dumb as we give them credit for being. But then again…..

Then again, they’re trading for fuckin’ Jokinen.

So rec’d. Jokinen is dead weight, he’ll fit in perfectly with the Rangers.

Somehow they always manage to make the playoffs each year, in spite of that. Although I’ve certainly noticed their tendency to overpay for people.

The Rangers actually have lots of puck-movers. With Sanguinetti down in Hartford, Gilroy’s not unmoveable.

Food for thought, since this has sort of turned into an open thread:
Edmonton have lost 13 games in a row—dangerously close to breaking our all-time record of 17.

Perhaps when they win again they can skate around with a trash can pretending it is the Cup like the Caps did.
"Tommy [‘The Bomber’ Williams] got hold of a trash can, and we paraded it around the locker room like the Stanley Cup," said Yvon Labre.

Recap Bullets
More like Arrows…
→ The Caps’ top line is a de-facto power play every time they’re on the ice, regardless of which line/D-pairing they’re playing against. It’s like watching an NHL line play in an AHL game.
→ It looks like teams still haven’t adjusted to the fact that Backstrom is shooting more often. Knuble, Ovie and him came down in a 3-on-2 and the defenders dropped off of Backstrom, even though he had the puck. He almost buried it above Smith’s glove.
→ The second line was exactly what you’d expect from a line with Semin and Flash – it was the best of lines and it was the worst of lines. One outstanding goal accompanied by some atrocious turnovers and dumb penalties.
→ Quiet, efficient night for Schultz and Pothier (albeit on different pairings). Tonight really demonstrated the worth of Potsy, as he helped fill in a bit for the loss of Green in the transition game. Still, our breakouts lacked pizazz or imagination without Green.
→ Erskine’s job is to help his team keep the puck out of the net. He was on the ice for two goals against. He did not do his job very well tonight. His hits were nice, and his shots were an interesting change of pace, but he was on the ice for both goals against and the first, in particular, was caused by his inability to clear the puck out of his own end. Tonight, more than anything, demonstrated the skills and limitations of Erskine. When he’s matched against bigger, slower players (Malone, Lecavalier), he excels. When he’s left out there against faster players (St Louis, Stamkos), he looks throrougly overmatched.
→ Workmanlike effort from Theo tonight. He got by with a little help from his friends (Mr. and Mrs. Post), but you really can’t blame him for either goal. A game like that is why a veteran goalie is a valuable commodity.
→ Now that Gordo’s healty, I’d really like to see him replace Steckel as our #1 PK forward. Steckel’s lack of speed/skating ability really showed tonight. He’s essentially a one-trick pony (win the faceoff and clear) on the PK. If he loses the draw, he’s a liability.
→ Tonight was the 5th or 6th time I’ve seen Chimera dump the puck in from the red line and beat the opposing defenseman to the puck on the chase. These plays may not look like much, but given the 3rd line’s ability to cycle, that kind of deep puck posession can be very valuable, and it’s something the Caps lacked up until now.
→ Steckel, Gordon and Bradley: Best 4th Line in the NHL?
→ Not an outstanding game for Flash overall, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that our winning streak overlaps his move to #2C.
→ No significant shenanigans/carryover from the last game. Maybe it’s because the game was too close for Downie and Konopka to goon it up.
Overall, this looks like a team whose winning streak is about to end. They didn’t look great for much of the game against FLA, and they looked mediocre for much of tonight. Right now, they’re winning on talent alone, and that won’t work against more talented teams. (To be fair, the same thing could’ve been said after the Detroit game – long streaks always involve games like this.) They looked like they missed Green on the breakout and the Power Play. Despite his goal, Ovie has looked like he’s fighting the puck lately, and he’s been having a hard time beating guys one-on-one. Here’s hoping he breaks out soon – but not against the US in the Olympics.

I did wonder why Downie was on the ice at the end of the game though… (one last shot for next game maybe?)
It’s hard to say with Downie, because he’s on the Bolts’ 2nd line and he gets PP time. Konopka on the other hand…

Konopka was doing pretty well against Steckel all night, would be my guess.

They’ve got some good guys on the draw, I think Backstrom was the only guy over 50% today.

Kind of fits for Schultz. Not so pretty to look at. Not so fast. Just damned good at what they do.

Overall, this looks like a team whose winning streak is about to end.
I think the best part about this streak is that this streak shows how awesome the caps are.
A few weeks ago, we would lose games like this (We kinda did). But the way the caps are playing right now, when they encounter the canyons of their schedule they still manage to win. And absolutely crush teams when they are are on the crests
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .

We’re also much healthier than we were prior to the streak. And we’ve finally sorted out the 2nd line/Semin conundrum.
But I see your point – this team is so good that they win when they’re not playing all that well.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
Great stuff but I disagree on a few things. First, I don’t think it’s fair to hold anyone but Flash (and maybe BB) responsible for the second goal. It’s not Erskine’s fault they were still PKing (and it’s BB’s fault if Erskine was out there for the 5 on 3, but I don’t think he was). After Flash’s ridiculous play everyone else is basically absolved.
Steckel is slow, but he has long legs and a long stick and can cover passing lanes pretty well. Until/unless BB goes to a higher tempo, more pressure packed, PK I don’t think Steckel is a liability. He definitely is a liability when he’s gassed; and BB probably uses him too much on the PK (I hate when Steckel gets two PK shifts on the same penalty, it’s asking for trouble, see my PK breakdown and you’ll notice how slow he is on his second shift).
Definitely the best 4th line I’ve seen. Unfortunately, it’s the 4th line.
Agree that AO is fighting the puck; he could have several more goals in the last few games. Which is scary. We all know he’s going to hit a tear when everything he touches goes in. I hope it’s not all wasted for Team Russia.
And while I agree that sloppy play is a prelude to the end of a winning streak, I’d remind everyone that this was the 3rd game in 4 nights. Not an easy schedule to come out fired up for.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Good observation about Steckel on the PK. I would have him start every PK and have him get off once the puck is clear no matter if it happens at 10 seconds or 40 seconds in. Keep him fresh for draws in the zone. This is easier in the first and third periods, not as easy in the second.
The Caps current 4th line is better than many teams’ third line. Then again, there are a lot of NHL teams that would kill to have a second line that has three guys with these totals: 11-20-31, 14-14-28, 11-15-26… that’s the Caps 3rd line of Morrison, Fehr and Chimera.
Let's go Caps!

It amazes me that other teams keep letting the Rangers out of these horrible contracts.
Kotalik was $3mil/3 years and scratched in 8 of the past 9 games.
Caps have done a great job of clearing their problem contracts this year with Clark and Nylander. There really isn’t anyone on the team right now not earning their keep.
Pretty
That was goal that Leich scored after the assits from Semin and Flash; my goodness. I almost thought the overcommited their but was proven wrong. What is it now; a 9-game point streak for Flash?
Am I the only one that will be watching the NESN feed on Tuesday night? Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness!

A lot of them pop up in the pictures on the Caps site or on Yahoo! – generally after we play the Islanders. Their arena is a whole but they probably have the greatest pictures I’ve ever seen on a game-to-game basis. All the cool ones of Ovie that were circulating recently were from that game, I think.
Just checking on the statistics on NHL.com and it is absolutely speaks to the player that Ovie is being in the top five of points, goals, assists and leading plus minus. It seems like he has been somewhat off recently (can’t believe I’m saying that with the points he is still putting up) but if he can step it up a little bit I could see him leading at least points, goals, and +/- at the end of the season. He is an absolute joy to be able to watch and thank god hes a Cap.

Knuble and Ovechkin being on the same line has turned out to be unbelievable…imagine if we had someone like Liles next to Greeny on the back end…LETHAL, but, who will we have to trade to get someone like that???

Some notes from the couch:
1. The missed hand-pass by Marty before he ended up scoring his goal was amazing, to say the least. Two ref’s had a clear view of what moved the puck from his shoulder to (Downie’s?) stick. I saw it live and was screaming my head off, and was even more livid after the goal.
2. Penalty to Backstrom to set up the Flash error to tie the game was a beautiful game of “Let’s see if we can make this interesting” by the Refs.
3. Flash was definitely trending Semin on that penalty that almost cost us the game. When you’re on the PK. Get puck, clear puck. Great work to win it back by the Bolt… Very Very Very bad work by Flash to get his “Angry Semin” on and commit such a bad hook in retaliation.
—3b. I’ve missed most of the last two week’s games due to travel and saw Semin got a few penalties, but are we at a point now where Flash’s actions are trending “Old Semin?”
4. Top line stood out ALL game long. Speed, excitement and determination.
5. Vinny getting tossed from the final face-off was poetic. It’s the same bullshit he pulled in the previous faceoff to get tossed. As the visitor, you have 1 job, get your stick in the dot. Stalling, feigning and not being square will all get you tossed. He clearly didn’t learn what the linesman wanted in a previous drop, why should the last one be any different? His postgame comments were hilarious.
