Winging it in Motown is doing a Hockeytown for Haiti fundraiser today. $0.05 is donated per [relevant/actual] comment on their GDTs. Current thread is here. They’ve gotten a bit over 1200 comments so far between their two GDTs. :)
I guess this means there’s a good chance that it’ll be Neuvy/Cash for the Hershey trip then? Unless they can somehow keep Holtby in the AHL, which would be kind of awesome. I’d love to see a Neuvy/Holtby tag team while we’re there. Killer.
Varlamov is supposedly rejoining Hershey Monday, so he might get Wednesday as a rehab start.

El-Bashir says that Neuvy was sent down to be eligible to play over the Oly Break… has Holtby come up again?
On CI:
Jose Theodore will be backed up today by Braden Holtby. Michal Neuvirth, I’m told, has been sent to Hershey so that he can qualify to play for the Bears for during the Olympic break.
I have a C on my heart.
Ah, thank you! So if I’m going to the Bears-Ads game on Weds, does that mean I’ll probably see Neuvy and Varly?

why didnt we get phaneuf? he’s exactly what we’d want in a new defenseman (young, long term deal, it wouldn’t be like we’re trading young prospects for a guy who will be gone in a year). If phaneuf was gettable, why didnt we get him?
Too much money for too many years, and way too many people to send over to make the money work.

This, and plus Phaneuf is more of an offensive defenseman, which ain’t what we need.

and it’s not like kovalchuck would help our D at all (plus he’d be super expensive to keep past this year/cost too many prospects)
Souray, Staios, maybe Hamhuis.

Nieds would be cheaper to get and the cap hit would only be for the rest of the year, and we’ve got plenty of room this season
Aim for the head baby Jesus
At this point the bigger question with Nieds is whether or not he goes back on his statement that he doesn’t want to go anywhere.

agreed, if he wants to go, and will probably retire after the season, then the Ducks have to deal him, and the only teams bidding would be teams that believe they have a reasonable chance at the cup if they can get him, so he might not cost that much to get.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
if we got kovalchuck (which everyone seems to predict) would we sign him long term? that would seem like a bad trade for us, unless it’s basically semin+ a young goalie and he takes a deal only a little bit more than semin……(basically replace semin with a more consistent semin….i dont like it.)
No, we could go a lot higher than that. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a decade-long contract.

Would kind of like to see ov and downie drop em early to settle things. Then I would like to see brads and erskine take turns with him. At any rate, if this game gets out of hand I hope bb has the sense to put brads erskine and chimera out when tocchet puts konopkos on the ice. We don’t need stecks trying that again.

Ovechkin’s our best player, so why would we want him out for 5 minutes early “to settle things?”

Just to see him pound downie and shut up the last of the clowns who think ov won’t fight. We can survive five minutes without him vs Tampa. We typically play 35 minutes without him in a regular game.

We typically play 35 minutes without him in a regular game.
That’s shockingly poor logic.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
Really? Ov plays 20-25 minutes a game right? Sure we’d like him out there when we want him and not stuck in the box. Losing him for five isn’t the worst thing in the world is my point.
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 31, 2010 3:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
But it just doesn’t work that way. You can’t just say “oh, he’ll get those minutes later” or something and have it all even out. Having him miss five minutes means you have to mess with lines, etc, and he’s definitely going to end up playing fewer minutes overall because you can’t just move those five elsewhere—fatigue is a factor.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 3:12 PM EST up reply actions
I understand your point. Some guys have to take an extra shift during that time. I get it. It’s just not that big a deal. Other guys go off for five mins and the rest of the guys survive. Never mind anyway cause it’s not gonna happen.
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 31, 2010 3:20 PM EST up reply actions
The reason why it’s generally not a big deal is because it’s not generally a first line guy that goes in the box. When he’s off it affects that line and everything below. And what if we get a power play during the five minutes? It’s just not a good idea in a game that’s still being contested.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions
The only good thing about the NBC broadcast is the gratuitous playing of the Mike Green Geico ad
Aim for the head baby Jesus
So the NBC announcers just said that Ovie not getting a shot in the last game against the Wings was a credit to how great the Wings are, but they lost the game without the best player on the planet getting a shot, I’d say thats a heck of a credit to the Caps
Aim for the head baby Jesus
No, its so retarded that all, and I mean ALL away announcers, or basically anyone who isn’t Joe B and Locker; basically orgasm whenever their D prevents Ovechkin from scoring.
Or just prevent him from scoring…much.

Couple of extremely good shifts coming down the stretch there. Bodes well. Tampa is playing this one with their eyes firmly fixed on OT.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
TB is a really dangerous team. They are the least consistent team in the NHL, imo.
They have ridiculous talent and can put up some serious points while holding their own in the defensive zone. However, just look at their PIMs (or there record for that matter) and u can see how unfocused they can get
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .
That and their defense sucks.
They’ve backchecked well so far, but the Caps are starting to ramp up the pressure in the O zone. With a little better luck, the Caps have a couple on the board already.
They should break through.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
AO looked a little sleepy out there. I have a good feeling that he’ll wake up here
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
OT, but I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the 2004 Draft Lottery. The Caps had about a 14% chance of getting Alex Ovechkin. The Penguins? Close to 50%.
And, of course, if the Penguins had that first pick, they’d have one less ball in the Crosby lottery. And we’d have one more.
It’s mind-boggling to think about how much that 14% chance shaped the NHL.

But the Caps jumping to 1st unquestionably altered the Bettman Lottery. Of course, you could say that about the previous two draft lotteries, but combine that with the fact that the player in question in this one would go on to be the best in the world and I say it’s the single most important event in terms of shaping the on-ice NHL last decade. More important than the lockout.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions
until this year I’d say that Malkin was better than Crosby, so losing the lottery to the Caps didn’t hurt them THAT much, but this year, ugh

not sure if I totally agree. Giguere > Toskola is not a guarantee, especially in front of the def. that Tor has had. MVP is often Most Outstanding Player so he still has a great shot to win again
Karl Alzner + John Carlson = Carl Carlson!
The voters often get up in the technicals:
“player adjudged most valuable to his team”
That being said, I don’t see how he’s not minimally in the top 3 of voting. His pace has been unreal.
Also of note: Caps 12-1 since he took captaincy. I’m pretty sure that’s valuable to the team.

He didn’t lead the league in two of those categories.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions
You could also point to the fact that he had fewer points per game than Ovechkin. If Ovechkin leads the league in +/-, goals, points, goals per game, and points per game—not to mention the Caps showing a night and day improvement since he was named captain—it’s tough to argue against him.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Varlamov told me he practiced on his own this morning and felt “very, very good.” Asked if it’s the best he’s felt, he said, “Yes, best.”

This is a great gritty game. Skill players aren’t having much luck doing their thing. But instead of getting too cute like they might have last year or early this season, they’re skating hard, working hard, cycling the puck, etc.

Right on. TBL have made it a point to gum up the neutral zone and the passing lanes, and the Caps aren’t trying to force what’s not there.

Bruce said yesterday that the team would decide after today’s game if they were going to make any moves.
They all could benefit by coming up, but Perreault isn’t coming up strictly because the offense is clicking on the first 3 lines right now, and Alzner/Carlson weren’t going to be called up today because Sloan needed a game.
In front and back, the team’s healthy and got a spare or two, and there’s no need to upset the apple cart at this point until someone goes down or get moved.

That clear, you have to make 10 times out of 10. The turnover was very nice, maybe that’s one most PKers wouldn’t make. But once the puck was on Flash’s stick, with nothing between him and the blue line, there is no excuse for not making the clear.
The Caps were worse off after he stole the puck and failed to clear than they would have been if he’d never stolen it at all. Not good.

I sure hope he’s not in the playoff PK rotation. At least not this year. I don’t think he’s unsalvageable as PKer, like some folks seem to. But I definitely don’t think he’s great at it yet. And the Caps are deep enough in PKers that they don’t need him to do that this year.

He’s been particularly effective in getting his shot towards the net quickly. More importantly, he’s getting it through, because if it gets blocked and goes the other way he doesn’t have the foot speed to make up for it. But he’s doing well keeping the puck in and getting it deep, and been more willing to do that with his shot instead of dumping it in the corner. Leads to a lot more scrambles and scoring chances in front of the net.

beautiful finish guys, not the best 3rd but way to win them against the teams you need to
"Ovechkin is as subtle as a shot of vodka."
It was an awful call against Backs, and then Flash screwed the goddamn pooch.
Did he get another shift, after that?

I was observing that throughout the game … stats anyone?
"My left hand has pretty much turned into a claw anyway."
Backstrom raked 68%, team was 57% for the game

lars lead the team in FO win percentage? … who would’ve thought?
"My left hand has pretty much turned into a claw anyway."
well, technically, B Gordon was 100% (1-1) but yeah-Nick is a damn efficient player. He reminds me of Datsyuk in that way.
Seriously, it’s him and Crosby 1-1A in the East at the pivot. He’s eclipsed Malkin, imo

This year? Yeah, that’s a fair argument. Would be really interesting to see their current campaign’s statistics compared side by side.
"My left hand has pretty much turned into a claw anyway."
I don’t think anyone was saying that and I certainly wasn’t suggesting that at all. It’s a long ways to go before this campaign is over. I merely thought it was a fair argument from bigonetimer — his assertion that Backstrom has matured to the point of being considered the East’s top pivot behind Crosby at this juncture isn’t that far of a stretch.

Tale of the Tape
Well, it’s closer in some areas than I thought it would be, from a career statistical standpoint. Geno is a more pure goal scorer, and Nick the playmaker but as far as impacting games consistently, I stand by my assertion.
Here’s the career numbers; this season is in parens.

Wow, Tampa broadcast team goes COMPLETELY batshit because Steckel “whined” about that faceoff.

Yeah, like stecks has enough juice to get the linesman to toss vinnie. Did they have anything to say about backs “hooking” call?

Oh I have my tickets. I kinda want to make a 10 straight sign and bring a detachable ‘1’ to add if they win.
I still think you should take a Boston-friendly sign saying “Marry Me Satan”

just take a little white board, so you can erase and write different things. that would be hilarious.

I never thought about that haha
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
Ugly 3rd.
The Caps righted the ship and got a gritty win, though. Loved the way they played once they restored the lead.

Good to see Ovie get on board with a goal that wasn’t an EN or deflection.
More his impression of a dirty goal.

Good stuff. My gf and I are going to the game in Boston too! We’re so excited, we’ve been counting down since the tickets came in.
That’s awesome! We were around that row the last time the Caps were in town. The view from that section is so awesome, and I think the Caps shoot towards that section twice.
yeah I made sure we got seats at the end where the Caps shoot twice. I’ve never been to Boston, but I’ve sat in what is essentially the same seats at the Phone Booth, and they were awesome.
At red line @ bos about 15 rows up. Represent

I have a good feeling that Burke isn’t done wheeling and dealing some of the Leafs roster. Now that they have Phaneuf, think the Caps should inquire about someone like Beauchemin to shore up the D-line?

I haven’t seen any of the game but is it fair to say the Caps missed Green’s O but nit his D today? Reading your comments, the D was quite good until some bad decisionmaking in the third.
IS KEPTIN NOW
With Green, everything would have just been smoother, imo.
The rest of the D-men stepped up in the o-zone and got really lucky in the D-zone with Monsieur Post on our side
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .
I think Green was definitely missed, on both ends.

Ersk was a -1 but I thought played a pretty good offensive game with 9 attempts at the net today (4 blocks and 5 SOG) almost all at ES

That’s twice in one week I’ve seen him pinch in and get off a nice slapper on goal. He’s starting to look like the Erskine
I thought Pothier looked to be the weakest of the D this afternoon.

Just wondering: is Brian Burke playing with a different salary cap than the rest of the NHL? Dion Phaneuf? Jeez…
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
They shed a ton of salary too though.

As I said above, I wouldn’t be adverse if the Caps inquired about Beauchemin to shore up the D-Line if Burkie’s in seller mode.

The leafs are like the Knicks, they suck, and they act like there isn’t a salary cap, so the salary cap always chokes them
Aim for the head baby Jesus
They took an extra $320,000 against the cap in the Phaneuf deal, and saved two million in the Giguere deal. Uh, what?
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 31, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions
I like the makeover actually, despite my disdain for dion. They got better in net and they got better on defense: Komi, Phaneuf, Kab, Beauchemin and Schenn is a very respectable group.

And Mike Van Ryn was one of their steadier D-men last year and is due back from injury next year.

MVR is done I think. No way he’s anywhere close to being as productive. The guy always manages to get injured too.
I don’t dislike the deal from the Leafs’ POV, I can only imagine Burke thinks he can’t reasonably re-sign some of these free agents, so it’s not a bad deal. Then again, the D was supposed to look alright on paper this season too, but look what happened – Vesa and Monster get hung out to dry most nights. Not so sure Phaneuf helps much.
I guess HNIC in Canada will have loads of obligatory Elisha Cuthbert shots on Saturday nights now
