Sunday Caps Clips: Lightning @ Caps Game Day

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Previews of tonight's game against the Bolts from Vogs, Peerless, CSN Washington, and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Raw Charge for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
  • To refresh your memory, this is the third meeting of the season between the two Southeast Division rivals, with the Caps taking a 3-0 decision back in December and the Bolts winning 7-4 earlier this month.
  • Oh yeah, there was some added drama in that last meeting as well.
  • Speaking of drama, in case you missed it, Mike Green has been suspended for three games for the elbow he threw at Michael Frolik the other night. A roundup of reactions can be found here (good work, YNC!).
  • And speaking of Green (I guess), here's an epic jersey foul from the capital of jersey fouls, Verizon Center. [twitgoo (h/t wittcap79)]
  • "The down side in DC? It’s no secret – the Caps’ defense and goaltending are suspect and those just happen to be the two areas that play a big part in playoff success." Yawn. [The Hockey News]
  • Mike Knuble is fitting in rather nicely in D.C. [Cap Centre]
  • The Caps' top line gets rave reviews due to "the playmaking ability of Backstrom," says someone who knows a bit about great offense (and Swedes). [Sporting News]
  • "[T]he Caps' needs are few and far between at this point." Combine that with the limited supply of available upgrades, and you've really got to wonder if this team is going to make a splash before the deadline. [NHL.com]
  • Another "in case you missed it": Varly's new mask. [Japers' Rink]
  • The in-house eight-game-win-streak montage got rave reviews the other night and is now online. [Caps365 (video)]
  • Peerless on rampaging beasts. [Peerless]
  • The Caps have one of the top power play units of the past two decades. [BtN]
  • I haven't a clue what "sick whips" are, but apparently Alex Ovechkin has some. [FanHouse]
  • Sweet - we're not "officially tortured." [ESPN]
  • The Bears are more or less unstoppable. [The Hockey News (great Braden Holtby pic, too)]
  • Down a level, good stuff on Stefan Della Rovere's life off the ice. [Barrie Examiner]
  • Oh, and Delly has been named an alternate captain for the OHL All-Star Game. [Barrie Examiner]

Jesus, even Dan Dunn is kicking ass. Soo many good goalies, it’s almost not fair.

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

I’m inclined to think if we make a move, a goalie prospect is almost assuredly on the way out of the door.

Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.

Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.

Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.

If so, no matter which of them it turns out to be, my sadness will surpass the time we lost Chris Smith.

I’ll be sad, but prospect-wise, it’s the deepest position, odds are GMGM will pick another goalie in the next draft no later than the 5th round, and if you could move Dan Dunn in a package with someone like A. Gordon for a stud d-man, would you?

Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.

Even looking at it logically, I’m not sure if I would. It would depend on the deal.

I think we’re so close to being where we want to be when the prospects we have come on full-time that a rental might actually set us back. (I hope that was comprehensible.)

If it was any other position, I’d feel more strongly that you’re right. But you can’t play 4 goalies at the same time.

And usually there’s only 2 on the active roster. And only 2 can really practice at the same time.

True, but with goalies it takes longer to figure out what you’ve really got. And I know that I’m not being entirely logical also.

"Camaraderie, that's what the Washington Capitals are all about."

by CapitalCentre on Jan 31, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, but that’s a huge underpayment for a stud defender. I really don’t see getting one for anything less than a roster player and a decent pick/prospect. If GMGM can swing something less than that, rock on out.

He does. But the other team probably wants one who is at least a “regular”

Rocking the Red since 1975

Sloan is a regular on plenty of other teams. TOR, EDM, and CAR, for example.

by DrinkingPartner on Jan 31, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Sloan’s an Alberta native I think…I could see a return to EDM to get regular minutes a good move as part of a package there. I could also see EDM asking for something more if that’s the only D-man they are getting back in a deal with us.

It could get chippy out there today

From the Tampa Tribune, referencing the last game:

Will anything carry over into this afternoon’s affair?
“I would think so. I hope so,” Lightning center Zenon Konopka said. “We battled that game, that was one of our better games so I hope we bring that same intensity. … I haven’t been here for the past couple of years, but I think they kicked us when we were down and spit on us once we were down.”

Saw him pass while in line at D&D. Asked the wife to order my coffee while I’ll stalked him around the arena. I lost him about 6 sections later, apparently he went into the mens room. So I turned around and headed back and he came out of the head. Snapped the pic and went back. Wife asked me, “did you say anything to him?”. To which I responded, “Nope, what do you say to a person like that?” But I had to get that pic, that is truly an EPIC jersey foul.

I know what you mean. While the guys on the Caps (and many fans) would love to acquire Kovy, he’s not exactly what the Caps need at the present time. The Caps already have enough offense and defense is not exactly Kovy’s strong suit. Moreover, he’s expensive in price.

Toronto, on the other hand, needs all the help it can get.

Pens- Wings scoreless after one, Howard is seriously bailing out the Wings, who look kinda flat so far.

Never noticed it before but Downie looks like he’s about to take a shot at Brads jewels in that pick

With Neuvirth down in the AHL

It is now clear that Alzner’s demotion was not just for the roster spot while Theodore was out, and BB/GMGM just don’t think he deserves ice time over Sloan. Simply baffling.

Is Neuvirth down so he can play in the AHL during the Olympics?

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

Totally agree. I raised this point in the GDT but everyone seemed to disagree.

AP FAIL!

Poor Holtby. I’ve seen his first name misspelled at least twice now! (sorry about the low quality. still new at this screen cap thing)

On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"

Lisa Hilary keeps calling him Branden, too. Hate it.

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
