Friday Caps Clips: Panthers @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's game against the Panthers from Vogs and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Litter Box Cats for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- To refresh your memory, this is the fifth meeting of the season between the Southeast Division "rivals," with the Caps taking the first four by scores of 4-1, 7-4, 6-2 and 5-4 (SO). Jose Theodore (who is ready to suit up, though you'd think he'd be tonight's back-up) is 3-0-0/1.93/.931 on the season against the Kitties.
- It's been a while since the last time the Caps won eight straight (enjoy it while it lasts, by the way), and the world has changed a bit since then. [D.C. Sports Bog, Homer McFanboy, #lasttimecapswon8straight]
- The offensive juggernaut that is the Caps keeps on rollin'... [AP, AP]
- ... and one result is about a grand worth of free wings every time the Caps score five times at home. [D.C. Sports Bog]
- Ted Leonsis
fires a shot across the bow to would-be bidderstells his side of the current WSELP situation (the description for which hopefully will not have to be escalated to "mess"). [Ted's Take] - We all know that Mike Green didn't make Team Canada because he's a defensive liability, so it's no surprise to see most of the blueliners who were selected make Mirtle's list of the current top defensive defensemen. Wait, less than half of them made the list? Nevermind (and kudos to the two Caps rearguards who did make the cut). [G&M]
- Green "has shown he no longer is a Michael Bay-worthy abomination in his own zone" (baby steps towards respect, I suppose), and thus the Caps' blueline might be good enough as is... unlike their goaltending. [The Hockey News, discussed further in this FanPost]
- The Caps are killing their Southeast Division foes... and pretty much everyone else. [FFODC]
- A shirtless Semyon Varlamov and a brief Q&A with his old man (and as much as I'd like to hear what Varly has to say, it's probably better this way than if the roles were reversed). [RMNB]
- All four Young Guns make another would-be All-Star team. [Puck Prospectus]
- Should Anton Volchenkov be on the Caps' trade deadline wishlist? [RtR]
- Eric Fehr on... Brett Favre? (C'mon, Google juice!) [PembinaValleyOnline]
- Speaking of Fehr, he recently played the part of gracious host to a team visiting from back home. [Morden Times]
- More on the 35th Anniversary patch and related uni thoughts. [Icethetics (which I don't get to link to much, but dig the heck out of)]
- As was reported by multiple sources yesterday, the Caps have reassigned Michael Nylander to Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League. [Grand Rapids Griffins]
- A couple of Caps at the Auto Show. [CSN Washington]
- More cake coverage (or should I say "fondant"? Get it?). [RtR]
- Catching up with former Cap captain Steve Konowalchuk. [Caps365 (video)]
- Sometimes "with all due respect" actually means "with all due respect." [ESPN]
- The Pensblog Guide To Hockey Fans. [The Pensblog (which, I'll remind you, you view at your own choosing)]
- R.I.P. Boris Kharlamov. [FanShot]
- Charity time, Rink Rats - rally for a cause, if you can. [John Walton Hockey]
- Finally, big day for birthdays with Chris Bourque turning 24, Roman Tvrdon turning 29, Jason Doig hittin' the big 3-3, Ed Kastelic turning 46 and Wayne Stephenson hitting 65.

Is Varly holding a fish in that picture? Kinda odd.
Great clips this morning!
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
On the South Least Division. The Flyers are currently sitting behind 2 (count them 2) South Least Division teams in the Conference, Washington and (drum roll please) Atlanta, who they lost to last night.
Or can we start making fun of the North Least division yet?
Rocking the Red since 1975
There’s no need for us to make fun of anyone but ourselves when we say funny or stupid things. We’re better than that.
Obviously, exceptions are: NHL, NHLN, people on NHLN, ESPN, Buccigross, Melrose, other people on ESPN, WaPo, Tony Kornheiser, Mike Wilbon, Mike Wise, Tarik (all in good fun), Applebaum, Steinz, WaTimes now that Corey’s gone, Don Cherry, Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, FInland, Nylander, Giroux, C. Smith, and the list apparently goes on and on.
But not the Northleast. Not just yet.

Aye. Name-calling is for children.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The Flyers are one point behind the Thrashers with a game in hand, so it’s not exactly a real changing of the guard.
The Southeast does have three teams in playoff position right now, which is the far bigger deal since they’ve never before sent three. That’s what I would be bragging about were I you (which clearly, I’m not.

It’s early yet. A lot can change between now and then.

I wouldn’t be bragging about any of the other teams in the Caps’ division, personally.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No question. The other teams in the division aren’t good.
It’s a valid point that the Caps get to feast on the SouthLeast. But if fans take the Caps lightly because of that I’m guessing that they’ll learn the hard way.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
I think the point of that article is that they feast on everyone else too.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Absolutely
The point is that no matter where the Caps would be, they’re gathering points in bunches from every division, and at a better rate than anyone else. If you placed them in another division, they conceivable would garner within one point of what they’re already getting if they played at the same level. That was my point in crunching the numbers.

Glad you enjoyed it. I have to admit that I was a little surprised at how much separation there was between the Caps/Devils and Sabres/Pens…I guess they’ve played well against the West so far.
Fight For Old D.C. Admin
Love my Hokies, Caps, Redskins, Wizards and Nats.
I noticed that. Only 3 Eastern teams have fared better than even against the West this year – WSH, BUF, and ATL at 7-4-0.
Looking at this again, what’s really intriguing is Washington’s points % versus each division is pretty even, in admittedly small sample sizes in the case of the West:
Washington vs. East:
vs. ATL: 9-3-3 (.700)
vs. NE: 8-3-2 (.692)
vs. SE: 10-2-0 (.833)
vs. East: 27-8-5 (.738)
Washington vs. West:
vs. PAC: 3-2-0 (.600)
vs: NW: 3-1-0 (.750)
vs.CEN: 2-1-1 (.625)
vs. West: 8-4-1 (.653)
Pretty consistent division to division – the only exception is Pacific, and I’d pin part of that on the lack of a captain for the California trip. Small sample size and all.

I thought so too. Kings were very proud of themselves, though.

It was a helluva game, though. Would be interesting to see if there’s a difference if they played now. Bet they couldn’t hold the Caps to one goal.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
We played 8 games without Ovechkin and won 6. Could we play eight games without Lars and do as well?
I hope we never have to find out.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Neither would I. But the fact that most of them are in the playoff hunt says a lot about the depth of the Eastern Conference in general.

Hahahahah! IT’s worst nightmare, but one of those things that’s funny when you look back on it. Kind of like the executive who added a 20MB PDF file to a meeting request and sent it out to everyone in the agency (some 6,000 people plus contractors) – then attempted to recall it.
For those of you not familiar, Outlook handles attachments inefficiently; it makes a copy of the file for every recipient, and when you try to recall a message or request, it sends the same request again in an attempt to recall it. This means that this guy sent 6,000+ copies of a 20 MB file, twice. Guess what happened to the server and the network.

Disagree, looking back at who’s been winning the award – Lidstrom, Niedermayer, Pronger, MacInnis, Blake, Leetch, Coffey, et cetera. Just about all of those guys were capable of playing lights out defense, but the offensive part of their game was just as instrumental to winning it. In fact, the last guy I can think of that won it based on sheer defensive contribution is Rod Langway.

Right. Because the Norris is for the best all-around defenseman, not merely the best defensive defenseman. Hence Green’s valid claim to it last year.

Plus, as I’ve seen DMG show multiple times, Green had comparable defensive numbers to Chara and Lidstrom. He was a legit candidate despite PensBlog’s continued snark on the subject.

That’s almost a point per game. Not as impressive when he did it, especially compared to a guy like Coffey, but definitely nothing to sneeze at.
Nick Lidstrom was the best defensive stopper in the game a bunch of the years he won, but he also had great offense to go with it. I’m not saying defense is irrelevant, far from it, but it’s not the only consideration. Nor should it be.

Honestly am a bit flattered that the Pens/Caps rivalry has reached a point where both fanbases have a legit distaste for one another. I tried the whole “go to a pub in Chinatown” thing for the Coyotes game after failing to acquire tickets. Rocket Bar can kiss my ass. No sound for the game and you’re 100 feet away from the arena? Seriously?
That’s cool. I just resent the idea that any bar would choose to play pop music over sports at 7:30, but then again most people aren’t as obsessed with sports as some of us.

A friend of mine’s uncle co-owned the one in OC with some of his LAX buddies. That’s the original. They all decided to franchise out, and I believe all the same guys own all of them. Each one will have single ownership of one and they all co-own the OC and Fells Point ones. It is weird seeing them pop up in random places.

their first analysis was about pens bandwagon fans…
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 29, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions
I think I have brought this up before, but the Pens attendance wasn’t that bad considering the teams they were throwing on the ice. I am too lazy to look up the stats (I would love if someone helped me out with this), but they averaged 14k+ for each of the 4 “dark years,” with the exception of a paltry 12k+ average for one of those seasons (maybe 02-03?). Despite the empty seats, the Penguins local tv ratings were some of the best in the league, and in the top 3 of all markets that broadcast with FSN. Pittsburgh is a small market where people aren’t going to spend their extra income on a losing team. It’s unfortunate, but you can’t blame them.
That being said, I am glad the Pensblog called out the bandwagon Pens fans, because there are a lot. I don’t hate bandwagon fans – I embrace them – unless they act like know-it-alls. And many of these know-it-all fans who actually didn’t know anything about hockey before ’05 comment religiously on TPB.
Hockey is a fringe sport. Every market, with the exception of the Canadien franchises and a few American ones, is going to have bandwagon fans. That’s the way it is. I hope the Capitals keep gaining bandwagon fans. I hope the Pens keep gaining bandwagon fans. I love when someone who would only watch football and basketball finally realizes how awesome hockey is. Not to mention, it is also good for the league.

I think it makes it more fair, because its not really their fault the building capacity is what it is. They can only seat so many people. Hence, Montreal is number one every single year because their building is gigantic (at over 21,000)

Yeah, but unless the building is actually completely full, it doesn’t matter. The Pens would have averaged under 12,000 in ’04 whether their building held 16,000 or 26,000.
As opposed to this years Caps, who are, IIRC, in the middle of the pack for total attendance and can’t go any higher because every game has been sold out.
Exactly. If the Pens were selling out then I’d look at total attendance and say that was misleading because they couldn’t handle any more. But you can’t make 12K look like it’s not abysmal just by looking at % capacity.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

2002 and 2003 numbers aren’t bad considering the Igloo seats like 16,500. So the % capacity was decent. 2004…..yeah…..that’s pretty bad.

I don’t mind Radiohead. If I have my iPod on shuffle and Kid A comes on, I usually don’t turn it off.
I think maybe I listen to Radiohead looking too hard for something. I need to just sit back and enjoy it.
One thing I dig about them, is that I feel like 50 years from now, their music will still sound like it was just recorded. Sort of like the way I feel about Animal Collective.
i was given this advice regarding Kid A by a friend of mine…
get some good headphones.. and listen to it in a dark room.. whether laying down to sleep or just to relax…. AMAZINGGG
I will give that a try.
The one time I got the most into Kid A was when I was driving back to Pittsburgh from D.C. late at night.
It was dark, I was the only one on the road, I was surrounded by the nothingness of the PA Turnpike, and I just rocked out to Kid A.
Haha definitely not.
On the flip side, if you don’t get into Animal Collective, listen to Merriweather Post Pavillion on a sunny late-spring day when you are just lounging around doing nothing. Or get Panda Bear’s “Person Pitch” on a Summer day.
MPP is a great album as well. It’s just so damn happy, how can you not like it?

Radiohead and the Rink coming together is a splendid thing.
Because I’m in the minority on this one but think people need to just give it a chance, I’ll throw this out there: In Rainbows is my favorite Radiohead album (followed by Ok Computer and, I suppose, The Bends). As with the Kid A comment, listen to it all the way through with the best headphones you can find with a CD-quality audio source. The sonic detail in that album is incredible. Truly a heartbreaking work of staggering genius.
Oh, and saw em at the 9:30 Club in 1997, best show I’ll ever go to in my life (even though they’re a much better band now).
In Ranbows keeps rising in my personal Radiohead rankings. It might be my second favorite at this point, or at least in a two-way tie with Kid A.

It’s closer than I thought it could be given how amazing Colors is, but I still like Colors better. It flows together better than The Great Misdirect and it has a better mix of beautiful, epic, and brutality to it that can’t be beat. The Great Misdirect at times seems a little like a vehicle to just show off their technical skills (like a Dream Theater album).
Plus, Colors came first, and it was so shocking and mind blowing that none of their albums can ever have the same effect on me that Colors did.

I dunno, I felt like they all made a gigantic leap forward technically without sounding too showy (like DT tends to do). I also find the individual songs on Misdirect to be more distinctive. I sometimes have trouble remembering which part comes from which song on Colors. Really, though, they’re both so awesome I’d be hard pressed to choose one or the other.

The reason you have a hard time remembering which part is with which song on Colors is because it is so seamless. That’s why I’ll take Colors over GM but GM has some seriously awesome transitions and is still great in it’s own right.

I think the problem is the “lazy” remark. If you don’t do stats, that’s fine. But these aren’t exactly advanced stats you are looking for and when you say “I’m too lazy to do the work to make my argument” then why should people here pay attention to it? We take pride on putting in the effort to advance real arguments, and not just throw crap at the wall. When you announce your laziness right off the bat it’s just going to make your point inherently less convincing.

Basically, the crux of my argument was that I love when the NHL gets new fans.
I hate the “bandwagon” term.
I hope the Caps and the Pens gets thousands of bandwagon fans per year. It probably means they’re doing something good on the ice.
As much as this could be a catastrophic incident, there’s some humor in the picture of Caps fans clad in red streaming down Pennsylvania Ave. and Obama thinking he’s under attack and calling out the National Guard.

I’m all for new fans too. My point was that DC hasnt cornered the market on new fans given recent success. There’s a short list of teams that will support their team through thick and thin, and that list is even shorter south of the border (not talking about mexico). When the Pens sucked, and didnt have a superstar, they didnt draw alot of fans to the arena. In fact, they drew less than the Caps during similar down times. I suspect, like it is here, many of the fans who are now in the stands were there before the team hit the skids but for whatever reason went away. Probably because of the quality of play.
As for TV ratings, sure the Pens have good ratings in terms of share. Pittsburgh is a smaller market so the same number of eyeball equals a higher share. In terms of number of households, it’s not that much different than DC, although it is higher.
At any rate, I’m a bit tired of the bandwagon label being used exclusively for Caps fans. What about the Lighting fans who have suddenly become alergic to St. Pete Times Forum. Used to put 20K a night in there. What has changed? Long Island, NJ, Carolina???

Speaking of Baltimore’s stadium deal:
Maryland officials said the Browns are grabbing the most lucrative NFL stadium deal in the country: a rent-free, $200 million stadium; all proceeds from parking, concessions and advertising signage; and permission to charge as much as $80 million in one-time “seat license” fees to fans wishing to buy season tickets. The Maryland Stadium Authority will receive $5 million from seat licenses.
This was 14 years ago now, and I’m STILL angry about it.

If you can find it, I’d recommend reading “The League” by David Harris. It covers the NFL and its owners. While it’s horribly dated (came out in the mid/late ’80s), it gives you an idea on how petty and schrutebag-ish a lot of those guys were/are.
Worth reading if for nothing else than to see just how much of a spiteful asshole Al Davis was in League meetings to Rozelle and other owners during the Oakland to LA to Oakland moves, and how that may have influenced other owners to follow suit in dealings with their host cities.

Well…there was not a lot of love lost between Rozelle and Al Davis. That stuff went all the way back to the 60s and the pre-Merger stuff when Davis was AFL commissioner.
I think its also kinda strange that Davis wasn’t even the majority owner of the Raiders until 2005, when he bought the shares from his old partner’s family.

Look at Baltimore. The city/state (via lottery) helped pay for a lot of the development of Camden Yards. The neighborhoods close by went from selling houses for $1 begging people to buy them and fix them up, to being some of the most desired areas of the city, with homes selling for $600K and up. It brought more business and development to the inner harbor area, etc etc.

The city did contribute some in the way of infrastructure, I think. I’m pretty much okay with that. It’s the giveaways that gall me. Think about the $600+ million spent to build Nats stadium, and the ticky-tack way the Lerners dealt with the city. How many years is it going to take for DC to recapture that money and actually make a profit on it?

well DC event ticket tax is 10%.
DC sales tax: 5.75%
DC hotel tax: 14.5%
DC restaurant tax: 10%
my guess is the recoup the money faster than you’d think. Plus the land around the stadium increases in value, they make money from increased property taxes, selling permits, etc.

Not when there isn’t anything near Nats Park and no one goes to the game. The team isn’t holding up their end of the bargain (team sucks and wasn’t trying to be better = no paying fans). Can’t blame the team for the recession, though, and therefore lack of building near the stadium.

Kung-fu Rink Rabbit
On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"
Because they inherited a team that had no scouting staff or organization, wasn’t very good in the first place, and had zero money with which to improve themselves. Everyone got excited and their expectations all jacked up because they blew their Pythagoreans out of the water in the first half of 2005, and bottomed out in the second half of that year. Since that point, they’ve gotten rid of a TON of older veterans, and are rebuilding (and boy, it looks great in hindsight that they didn’t give Soriano big bucks).
And something like this:
When Ted Lerner took over the club in mid-2006, he hired Stan Kasten as team president. Kasten was widely known as the architect of the Atlanta Braves before and during their run of 14 division titles. Kasten was also the general manager or president of many other Atlanta-area sports teams, such as the Atlanta Thrashers. “The Plan,” as it became known, was a long-range rebuilding and restructuring of the team from the ground up. This plan included investing in the farm system and draft picks, and having a suitable team to go along with their new stadium.
Takes a LOT of time to do, and i’d much rather them be godawful terrible for a few years than stuck in perpetual mediocrity where they aren’t good enough to win, but aren’t bad enough to rebuild with good draft picks.

I don’t think the Ballpark/Riverfront/Navy Yard will ever grow into “another Chinatown.” The Phone Booth has events ~250 dates each year. The neighborhood is smack in the middle of the city, accessible by every metro line. It’s within easy walking distance of many tourist attractions.
Nats Park has events about 85 dates a year, maybe 90. It’s on the southern edge of the “core” of DC. It’s served by only one metro line.
Believe me, I want to place to develop. I’m a little bored of my walking-distance restaurant options being Subway and Five Guys. Bars are nonexistent except when the tent is open during ballgames (and has to shut down at midnight!). There’s ZERO shopping. But I’m not so foolish to believe that the area is going to have the same level of activity as Chinatown.
Kung-fu Rink Rabbit

I won’t be like chinatown because it isn’t as close to the business center of the city, so there will never be the big expensive office buildings filled with people who make a crapton of money. But i think that the area will be packed with bars and mid level restaurants in a few years, or as soon as some developers get get out of the massive debt they all seem to be in.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
there are other advantages VC and Chinatown has (as you’ve noted) but I’m willing to bet 500 theoretical dollars that the area around Nats park will continue to improve.

Looking at Mirtle’s analysis and given the reported discussions between the Caps and Blues, I would love to see Barrett Jackman in a red jersey. In the mold of Chimera, he doesn’t fight as much as he used to but would add some real teeth to the team toughness quotient. And an affordable price tag for the next couple of years.
I’m not sure if “team toughness” is really an issue. Besides, if I were an opposing team, the LAST thing i’d want to do is send out a guy to start stuff, knowing that he’d be putting out a PP that’s operating at a 26% clip.

Jackman isn’t a guy (anymore) who looks to start something just for the heck of it. But he’ll jump in quick if another team starts taking liberties, running the goalie, etc. Team toughness isn’t a huge issue, but IMHO we could use another guy who might actually put a little fear into the opposition.
The guy is on the hook for 4 million and 3 and a half the next two years. Seems a little too rich for my blood.
Besides, the team has done a really good job recently (like Bradley and ShaMo) of sticking up for each other when running into a guy like Downie or Orr.

I don’t see the Thrash moving Kubina while they’re still in the race. Ditching Kovalchuk is logical as they can get a huge return rather than losing him for nothing. Kubina won’t net them a key piece moving forward — it’s just completely throwing in the towel.
There’s a much better chance of ATL dumping Kubina than STL dumping Jackman, if only for the fact that they’ve got him and Bogosian playing the same minutes, and wouldn’t have to worry all that much about replacing it.

I’d love to have Kubina, just don’t see it. I agree — the Blues won’t “dump” Jackman. They’ll want a nice return. But they’re reportedly looking for a young goalie. Maybe Neuvirth, a decent prospect and a pick would do it.

I’ll keep ringing the DJ King bell I’ve ringing quietly off-and-on since last season.
Now he’s definitely not a singular reason for a trade with the Blues the way the Caps are playing, but he would be a nice throw in for the Caps to have. He’s had his injury issues but is at the “it’s now or never” point in his career. He’d be easy to send down and call up with his recent history.
He’s on rehab assignment (finally) and we will see him vs the Caps in Feb.

Federer has rarely played all that well against Murray for whatever reason, nor has he yet won an Australian open since the court turned blue. I agree with what Federer said, that the first set is going to be a lot more important for Murray than it is for him. If Murray’s getting trounced, it usually takes a lot for him to get it turned around.

hah its always awkward, not knowing how to address people in real life. My girlfriend teases me about my “internet friends” all the time.
I actually went to a wedding this weekend for a guy I became friends with via CI before the collective IQ of that place dropped below special needs level. At the wedding she was telling everyone how I would refer to him both by his first name and his screen name.

So anybody else notice an uptick in Caps coverage this week in general? Seems like with each successive win more heads are starting to turn. IF…If the streak is still intact by the time we play Pittsburgh next Sunday, this place will explode.
What I wonder is why more people aren’t paying attention to Ottawa, which also has an 8-game-and-counting streak going. Is it that the Caps are doing it in spectacular fashion, that the Caps simply get more attention from the media, or what?
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
OV gets more eyes opening and tongues wagging than someone like Alfredsson , as much as I like the guy even in Canada. Has a big part of it. Also we are top of the conference as opposed to around 5 like the Sens.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
by Rather Bengt on Jan 29, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions
I think that’s the case. Ottawa appears to be getting press enough in Canada, but they’re not winning with gaudy numbers of goals. However, they do seem to be getting spectacular goaltending right now. With Pitt/Ottawa at 4 and 5, if the playoffs were right now, we might not have to worry about seeing the Pens. But that’s today, and I don’t expect that to hold up. Hey, the way things are at the moment, they both have outside shots at catching their respective division leaders.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Maybe a bit, but I think its a bit more about star power and the Caps already being on the radar. Same reason that Alex Smith could throw for 400 yards on the same day as Kurt Warner and Brett Favre and his name would barely be mentioned. Teams and players who aren’t as well know always get shafted. If Smith’s did well over an extended period of time he would slowly get more press and recognition. Also, playing on national TV or in a big media market helps too. I could go on and on.

I love both guys, but they’re not choosing their material. Staff does, and then they get to give their take on it. That’s not to say they don’t believe anything they say, but for example, if you ask Wilbon a question about the Caps right now, he’d probably tell you he’s not paying attention yet. (Football’s not over.)

According to this website, on a statistical level 5 of the total playoff teams (WAS, NJD, BUF, PIT, OTT) are locked in, and a 6th (PHI) is almost a lock. Then you have 7 teams scrapping for two spots. The Thrash and the Bruins are the most likely to get them at this point.
They don’t reveal their formula on the site, so we can’t know whether it’s any good or not. But I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
Should note that this says nothing about seeding at the end (although they have a section for that as well).
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Yeah, me too. I will have to dig around and find the predictions we made in the preseason, but if memory serves, I think I settled on 1st in the East and 112 points (not sure about the points, but I am pretty confident in the first in the East prediction). I want to be right.

Here are some of my predictions that are still alive:
Win the Eastern Conference.
Brooks Laich has a 30 goal 30 assist season and finishes on the plus side of +\- for the first time.
Knuble puts up 35 goals for a career year.
Ovechkin hits 113 points this year but the majority will be assists.
Backstrom has a career year.
Mike Green gets even better at defense but puts up less goals than last season.
The Capitals make the Cup Finals.
F&B:
52 Ws, 110 points, Alzner is a top 4 D by the end of the season.

Crazy Line Name Thought
This isn’t long enough to deserve a FanPost, so I’ll toss it out here. I know I saw the mention of the third line name elsewhere, so I’ll s/t whoever said it if I can find that person.
Ovechkin – Backstrom – Knuble: “No Canada No” line (a Russian, a Swede, and an American, but no Canadians) or the NCN line for short
Laich – Fleischmann – Semin: “Lucky Seven” line (all three numbers are multiples of seven)
Chimera – Morrison – Fehr: “Pythagoras Line” (52 = 32 + 42)
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Wow, nice math on that last one. Could be the Squares Line, alternatively.
And good call on the 2nd line. Could also be the Touchdown Line for the same reason.

So what we’re saying here is that the hypoteneuse of Poti and Erskine is Langway? I don’t know, that math seems off to me.
(By the way, I like"Squares line" for 9-16-25 better than Pythagorean Line, since they don’t actually add up to the lengths of the sides — they add up to the squares of the lengths of the sides. And “Touchdown Line” is brilliant. And I think this actually is worth a fanpost. And I think cheese is delicious.)

No Canada No
Hmm. I’m not 100% sure, but there are only 4 teams that can proudly say: “No Canadians in my first line”. Rags and Caps have multinational lines, while Thrash’s 1st line is almost (I guess Antropov has Kazakh citizenship) Russian, and we also have Canucks featuring 3 Swedes.

What I was getting at with this one is that there’s one guy who could play for Team Russia, one guy for Sweden, and one guy who is eligible to play for Team USA. The missing one of the Big Four is Canada. Hence, No Canada No.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I get that. But if you go with that nationality thing deeper, at least as I see it, Russians and Swedes tend to gather in any given team. I mean, you do not often see full Czech or American line while Russian and Swede combos are not rare. In other words, if you see a Swede or Russian in the team, the odds are that he is not alone or will not be alone. Look at Caps, Atl, Canucks, Detroit (which, by the way, had Russian and now has Swedish “disease”).

I give up waiting to tag onto someone else mentioning Laich’s quote from CI
We can’t let down
Not a big deal, and I like his energy, but I’d tweak the message as it’s leads to wrong-thinking for winners. The idea rather is that they are playing the way they should be playing and that’s why they’re winning. The way coach has been telling them to play. It’s not a hard thing, it’s the right thing, and it’s fun to win.
It’s a subtle difference, but the kind of thing that leads to a subsequent losing streak with a loss.
No need to let the air out with a loss. Be the team embodiment of the machine that wears the C, and chew up the opposition by playing good smart team hockey. Not by stressing out or carrying a load that gets heavier and will eventually be dropped.

Gin and tonics are delicious if you don’t want to go right to straight gin. But you are right about needing a good gin. Moreso than any other liquor, cheap gin is completely undrinkable. You can mix cheap vodka or whiskey to make a least a decent drink, but there is no way to salvage cheap gin.
