What a tease! Good luck back in Hershey, Holt

Fehr is fair, but I like Laich

by amkcaps on Jan 28, 2010 2:20 PM EST via mobile reply actions

It’s probably worth mentioning here that for Neuvirth to be eligible to play in Hershey during the Olympic break, he’d have to be in Hershey for five of the next nine games. Unlikely.

Agreed, unlikely. I doubt the Caps are betting on Varly being back before the Olympic break, so they’ll need to roll a Theodore / Neuvirth tandem through this stretch. At the rate they’re going right now, this is okay.

I was actually wondering about that after the Alzner playing during the Olympic break talk. Hmm.

While the unlikely there makes me a little sad (read: no Varly), I am also happy that we may have a chance of seeing Holtby play on the Hershey trip.

Seems like it’ll probably be Holtby or possibly Varly if the Russians decide he can’t make it to Vancouver

If he’s skating now he just might. I’m still hoping for Holtby. :(

by beta on Jan 28, 2010 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I expect this means that Alzner will return tomorrow?

Why, aren’t there 7 defensemen?

Heh. I don’t give a flying damn what the fans want. I’m more interested in what the organization plans to do; indications are that they’d prefer Alzner up here full-time and will have him here unless circumstances require otherwise. They won’t do it till tomorrow, though – why take the cap hit for today for no reason?

If they don’t, that’d be why, though.

I guess that means Theo got the green light to at least be a backup tomorrow. Solves Hershey’s goalie problem.

Well, Neuvi did get shelled last time he faced the Cats…

More the reason for him to play tomorrow. Exorcise that demon!

How much strain on the hip is there to look good in a baseball cap?

Speaking of Goalies

What’s a #1 goalie in March?
I believe BB said in fall that he planned to get good looks at “both” goalies, over 50 games or so. By then (aka now) the #1 would identify himself. Instead he’s gotten really interesting and arguably inconclusive ID from 3 goalies. Does Varlamov come back as “#1”? How many starts define that term, under the circumstances?

by redlineblue on Jan 28, 2010 8:25 PM EST reply actions

I’ve actually been wondering the same thing for a while. Especially with the combination of Theo being in contract year and playing really well lately and Varly having been injured half the season. Neuvy’s obviously going to get sent down as soon as Varly is better, so it’s a toss up between Varly and Theo. March has tons of games though, they’ll both see time.

by caps123 on Jan 28, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

Only problem with sending Neuvy down. It seems that Holtby has earned himself the #1 goalie position at Hershey. (Wait! Neuvy also has a Calder Cup under his belt so that takes priority.)

True, but what else can you do with Neuvy? Varly and Theo are definitely the two that you would dress for games and keep as your # 1 & # 2 goalies.

by caps123 on Jan 28, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

Probably Neuvy and Holtby will get the work in Hershey. (And the Cash Chihuahua doesn’t get much work there.)

Holtby might get sent down to the ECHL if Neuvy goes to the AHL

They want them both playing regularly. The competition isn’t as great in the ECHL, but he’ll play much more frequently.

I hope that’s the good news. I’d hate to be the guy responsible for getting a good look at 40 w/o blowing either 60’s mind or 40’s groin. This is where BB’s alleged ineptitude w/ goalies comes in handy: they’re accustomed to be ready for anything, on no notice, and to perform in that circumstance or be replaced.

by redlineblue on Jan 28, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Everyone hates BB for his goalie treatment

but I actually like him for it.. He doesn’t give goalies a long leash, and with the ones we have, they need a short leash. Kolzig got mad, but we made it to the playoffs. Theo got mad, but we made it to the second round. Seems to work fine

Yep. Maybe he ’doesn’t understand goalies’, but treating ’em like hockey players (perform, or sit) is a decent Plan B.

by redlineblue on Jan 29, 2010 6:38 AM EST up reply actions

Also...

There’s something to be said for having Arturs Irbe as our goalie coach this season. I would expect Boudreau to consult with him on a regular basis about our goalies’ progress, and we have already seen the benefits of this coaching change in how Varlamov was playing when he was not hurt, and even with Theodore and Neuvirth.

I need a snappy signature...
