Finnish is a highly synthetic language. Words are combined, derived, and inflected for meaning, so we get massive Finnish words that I imagine are difficult to translate into English. I’m guessing that’s why there are some words in that article didn’t translate, though I’m not a linguistics expert.

I didn’t find it that difficult… maybe because I was so used to hearing it? I dunno I stopped after 101 ’cause the 102 class I signed up for was canceled. :(
I took 2 full years of it, and those first 3 months of putting sentences together was painful. And I was an anime junkie back then, too, so I had the sound and familiarity with it. It was seriously just trying to wrap my head around a language that is nothing like English (being an English Lit/Writing major) that was so difficult.

I’ve been taking Japanese for 2.5 years and haven’t had much trouble picking it up. I’m also just pretty good with languages in general, so that probably helps.
Earlier today a local student was surprised that I’ve only been studying for 2.5 years because of how good my Japanese is.

Lots of observations about the dominance since AO became captain. I don’t think the two developments are entirely unrelated; I also think that Chimera’s presence in the lineup has something to do with it.
The Morisonn goal to crack the seal came as a direct result of very good forechecking pressure by the Pythag line, which led to extended zone time, and got ShaMo a shot from the point.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
I alluded to this in last night’s recap thread. In total agreement with you.
That 3rd line is going to be a beast (no pun intended) by the time April gets here.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brook Laich
The Pythag line is a great name for our third line. Surprised it didn’t occur to me earlier. Or even the fact that all three of the guys on it have numbers that are squares.
In another mathematical note, all three members of our current second line have numbers that are multiples of 7. (Laich — 21; Flash — 14; Semin — 28).
Rocking the Red since 1975
Chimera Trade
The more I see him play the more I’m impressed with GMGM trading for him. He seems to be another piece that fits perfectly into the Capitals puzzle. We needed another tough guy, and Chimera’s tough, but comes with playmaking speed too. He also just seems to make things happen out there, creating opportunities with his fast and physical play.
His fight in the Florida game was kind of inspiring, it sort of confirmed that he had arrived in DC, he’s a Cap, and he’s bought into what’s going on around him. I’m really excited to see what happens now that he’s settled in.
I was sad to see Clarkie go. It always stings a bit to see one of the elder statesman, and captain, traded. That said, the trade brought in Chimera, who as I’ve mentioned, is quickly becoming an impact player, and it opened the way for Ovechkin to wear the C. Maybe it was the suspension doled out by the NHL, or maybe it is the responsibility that comes with officially being the leader of this organization, but OV has taken his game to a new level. He’s playing like a man on a mission. I haven’t seen the reckless play that troubled me earlier in the season. That reckless play kept our star in the penalty box, and out serving suspensions. What I’m seeing now is a player who is playing aggressive but clean hockey, he’s playing smart and selflessly offensively, and
If this type of play continues after the Olympic break, the Caps are going to be scary good.

Regarding the Wiz/VC acquisitions, it sounds like WS&E is maybe looking to rush things along to see if they can open the market to other bidders and force Leonsis’ first refusal rights, even though things have even completed appraisal levels yet (longer article here).
I don’t know how toxic the Leonsis-WS&E relationship is, but the latter has got to be holding the losing PR hand right now.

It all strikes me as Kabuki — stylized drama. At the end of the day, there will be a deal, smiles all around, statements about how folks will continue to build on the legacy of civic-mindedness of Abe Pollin and how the new owners are worthy custodians of the sports empire Pollin built.
It writes itself.

WS&E better treat Ted right or they will learn a hard truth – don’t pick a fight with the Internet.
IS KEPTIN NOW
It’s definitely a bad PR move, but once the deal is done, PR doesn’t matter for the Pollin family. I think. (If the sons are still in the real estate business, this could be a poor move.) On the other hand, I see it as sullying Abe’s legacy, but then, maybe that’s just me.

Just a negotiating ploy by wse. They have already layed out the process in a previous memo. Since the two sides are $100m apart, wse wanted to take the opportunity to remind Ted that this could go to the highest bidder…eventually. Ted will buy the team, make no mistake about it.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Using “Mirtle Math,” where you try to compare results while accounting for the era played and the relationship of one team to the rest, it would seem beyond debate that this Caps team is the best offensive team since the lockout. They are averaging 16.8 percent more goals-per-game than the second place club. The next highest post-lockout margin was last year, Detroit over Boston by 7.0 percent.

Yup. That was the crux of the argument 2+ weeks ago… before they exploded.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I flunked statistics, but I wonder how these Caps stack up against Ottawa of a few years ago and the ‘95 Pens when you factor in league-wide scoring for those years. I’d include the’83 Oilers but they were otherworldly.
If you account for the era, I’d be curious to see how the Caps stack up to the ’83 Oilers.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Speaking of that team, in the pregame last night, Locker noted that the Caps have scored seven or more goals four times this season and that the ‘83-’84 Oilers did it (I believe) 33 times. Obviously different eras… but damn.

They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
thats not what they said about Osgood last year during the regular season when Detroit was leading the league in scoring…
They never scored 11. Or 8. They had a good offense, but their goalie was needed more. It’s a different era, offense is harder to come by, so D is needed more. I think part of the problem with the Oilers goalie was the system. When you can score that many, it’s not exactly a devils style defensive minded system.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Completely different era for goaltending and everything else. The Vezina winner in ‘83-’84 was Tom Barrasso with his 2.84 GAA and .893 SV%. A bunch of other Vezina winners in the ’80s also had a GAA of 3+ and a SV% below .900 (until Roy came around).

Everyone always looks at that and asks “How many goals would modern player X score in that style of play?” Looking the other way, how would a team with a Luongo or a Brodeur fare? I suspect the difference would be nearly as huge.
The best analogy I can think of would be the 1965 Indy 500. Back then, pit stops were not rehearsed or even thought of as a time saver. That is until one team hired a stock car team’s pit crew (who did rehearse at the time). Needless to say, that had a significant effect on the outcome of the race.
Between the dominance of “stand-up” styles of play and smaller equipment, there was an awful lot of net to shoot at in those days. But then, they still used wood sticks that didn’t flex like hunting bows, either.

Goaltending has come a long way since then. Goaltenders get coaches now when they are kids which is a huge part of why all the young guys now are so technical. The equipment has evolved. The training and size of the goalies has increased 10 fold.
So I would say they were definitely trying but they really didn’t have much of a chance unless they were born to be a goalie.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I think with all of the major sports in this country, but particuarly the NHL, NFL and NBA the talent is bigger and faster in general thanks to advanced scouting. There’s so much more money to be made off of it nowadays that no stone is left unturned. Not to say that the stars from the 70’s in those sports wouldn’t be stars today, but many of the role players probably couldn’t hang for a single game.
It used to be that normal players could score on a wrist shot on the goalie -the type of shots Eric Fehr takes from the top of the circles routinely went in. These days, you either have to be Alexander Semin taking a wrist shot, or you have to not be shooting at the goalie if you want to score. That is, there needs to be a great pass in there somewhere that puts the goalie out of position.
Anyone ever see the tape of the famous “Miracle on Manchester”? Mario Lessard, IIRC, was the Kings’ goalie. Check it out – that dude was the worst goalie I’ve ever seen, he couldn’t stop a beach ball if a two-year old bounced it his way. Of course, he won that game, but times have seriously changed. Looking at old tapes (like Lafleur’s famous goal on Eddie Johnston), you wonder if any of those players would have scored today.
One other tidbit of how high scoring that 83-84 Oilers team was...
Their goaltender Grant Fuhr had 14 assists in 45 games. Christ almighty

That line kind of bugged me. No source, no follow up. Just kind of left us hanging. Anyway, Sydor has a $1 mil cap hit that is not worth his current production, IMO. Decent defensive numbers BtN-wise, but at 37 and at that salary, I would pass.

Yea, I let one slide, but a pattern is bad. We can’t be elitists using phrases like that!
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Eh, I strongly disagree with the thesis laid out by that page. No one here is suggesting that a pun like JP’s is like, the funniest thing in the world or anything. But when skimming through 300+ comments in a Caps Clips thread, even the most astute of us could miss the coincidental humor in a line like “Btw, a team official has confirmed to me that Nylander’s headed to Jokerit to finish the season”—especially since many of us may not have instantly recognized that Jokerit was in Finland!
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 28, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions
Missing the humor is the point!
If the pun was not intended, then it wasn’t intended. Saying “Oh see that pun there! That wasn’t intended. LOOK AT THE PUN!” brings attention to it, thus makes it intended.
If you want to make a pun, go for it, I love them. If you really want to bring attention to it, go (pun intended). But “no pun intended” makes the pun intended thus always strikes me the wrong way.
Personally, I like hidden puns. Subtly is nice.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
No, “no pun intended” does not make the pun intended. Did it ever occur to you that the writer may not have intentionally made the pun, put only noticed it afterwards?
I love hidden puns as well. Lots of my favorite books, plays, etc. get a lot of mileage from subtle turns of phrase like that. But no one here is writing the next great American novel or anything. We’re generally idly browsing while at work or something. A lot of people are bound to appreciate making an otherwise subtle pun come to the fore, as evidenced by JP’s comment turning green.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 28, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions
It might have been noticed after the fact, thus not being intended while written, but the writer definitely noticed it, and kept it, thus making it intended. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been able to type (no pun intended).
This is the way I like the phrase being used http://www.xkcd.com/559/

They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Well then think of “no pun intended” as being short for “no pun intended while written”. I mean… let’s be serious, if you do something on accident, and then notice it after the fact, that obviously doesn’t mean you intended to do it.

I’d just looked at his numbers at Grand Rapids yesterday. Lots of A (16ish) 2G, and a big time minus. Not good, and not good for his prospects of getting back in to the bigs. If it weren’t for the contract, he’d probably retire. I would like to say that I would retire, but I think I could swallow my dignity for that kind of money for one year.

I wonder if people could still be “respected” in other sports and pull off stuff like that.
Look at Lebron. The dude pulled what would be a simple “Avery” and didn’t shake hands after his team got booted and now he went from sportsman to forever (at least for a while) branded as a “Brat”.
Then again Charles Barkley can beat up a fan and still be a TV host. What a strange world we live in.
I love Dale, but I don’t think it’s invalid to lose respect for him for that. It was an incredibly bush-league, dirty, unsportsmanlike hit that resulted in an injury. If someone did that to Ovie, say, I would want him dead.
Whereas I was never too fond of Hunter, and that sort of justified my feelings in my mind.

Not to jack this subthread, but since you mention Messier…you know who really reminds me of Messier? AO. On the Ducks broadcast last night, their color guy said, “[t]he thing about Ovechkin is that he does things at full speed that most players have to slow down to do.”
I always thought that that particular skill was one of the things that was most impressive about Messier.
Should note that I think AO is better than Mess ever dreamed of on his best night, for the record. But I think they are similar in that regard.

At the risk of repeating myself...am I accurate or just a fanboy?
I noted in the GDT last night that the Caps have, over the last 8 games or so, been playing hockey at as high a level as I’ve ever seen. I specifically think of the ’80s Oilers and the ’70s Canadiens in this regard; those two teams simply were so good that they won at will, and their opposition just could not stop them from doing what they wanted to. I also note that I include the Wings game in here; the Wings made the cardinal error of not finishing a superior team when they had them on the ropes.
Does this coincide with your observations and analysis, or am I just feeling too good about a hot streak?
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
No, I feel the same way. I’ve never seen the Caps play better than they’ve been playing, specifically, these last few games. The beginning of the streak was a little bumpy, but they’re on fuckin’ fire right now.

I’m loving how they are showing (overused term coming) killer instinct lately. Where they might have gotten lazy or faded in the third period earlier in the season, they are keeping up their forecheck and just breaking teams down.

this is especially encouraging considering the general sentiment on the Rink when the season first started. What’s amazing to me is not only the difference between the 09-10 caps and say, the 06-07 caps (yikes), but the difference between the Jan ‘10 caps and the Oct ’09 caps…it’s huge!
I’m not expecting this to last through June, but the fact that they know how to turn it on (for 8 games!) makes me just that much more excited for playoffs this year

not sure how to compare to those teams, but I think the defense has a lot to do with how these games are turning out. seeing quite a bit of quick and smart puck clearing on bad rebounds and pretty damn decent outlet passes. one feeds the other. its been a pleasure, more so than usual, watching the Caps recently.

From the BusinessWeek Power 100 ranking:
Alexander Ovechkin
Power 100 rank: 37
Sport: NBA/Washington Capitals—F
I’m glad to see Ovechkin is a female NBA player.
And Phil Mickelson is #3 on that list.
"My face is my mask."
For all you stats people. I did some math to figure out, if all things were equal (games played and minutes played per game), what the top 9 + Greens stats would look like. All numbers are based on 53 games played and 20 minutes played per game.
Ovechkin 37G | 43A | +35
Backstrom 21G | 36A | +23
Knuble 25G | 22A | +19
Semin 32G | 36A | +25
Flash 26G | 30A | +8
Laich 16A | 24A | +8
Fehr 29G | 29A | +37
Chimera 19G | 38A | +25
Morrison 14G | 25A | +22
Green 10G | 32A | +18
Its hardly scientific, just for viewing pleasure.

Flash has a better shooting percentage, better faceoff percentage, and higher total goals/points. Other than that, I doubt you can find a stat where Flash is better than Fehr, especially when you include the other end of the ice.
I haven’t seen any mention that on the single goal against yesterday, Flash made a lazy poke at the puck that didn’t get out, and then watched the puck instead of covering his man, who scored the goal.
Him being on the ice for goals against is starting to become a pattern.
I see what you’re getting at, but higher total goals/points is pretty huge (yes, it’s probably just a product of his getting better ice time/assignments, but he’s getting those for a reason [that will remain a mystery to us]).
I’m mainly just saying that teams value guys that can play multiple positions.

Flash’s real value is in his surprising chemistry with Semin. With Flash, Jizz is just… better.

And for that reason Flash might have a much higher trade value relative to the actual productivity that we are seeing from the two of them.

Further, on our streak since Ovi got the C, where we have outscored opponents 62-30, Flash is +4. Somehow Brooskie managed +7, Semin managed +10 and they’re on the same line….

Four or five assets is way too steep for a player that they really don’t need at this time. The only exception would be is if Semin was one of those assets, but I just don’t see that happening. Too much chemistry to throw off.
On the other hand, what other teams have the 4-5 assets that they are looking for? Pittsburgh probably doesn’t after betting the farm (and winning) the past couple of years. Jersey seems to be walking a thin line. Rangers can’t have much, or at least can’t showcase much due to salary constraints. Philly is similar, though they have some young talent that I doubt they’d move. I’m gonna go ahead and rule out the rest of the SE. Maybe Buffalo is looking to shake things up?
Kovy for Vanek, Tallinder, and Gerbe would make for a pretty nice package to ATL.

We already have Ovie, and Semin has a great shot/stick plus PKs. That is huge. Kovy would be duplicating things we already have, no adding something we lack

I’m with you 100%. The Caps have the best player in the game and he just so happens to do almost all of the same things as Kovy. I’m not saying Semin is better than Kovy (he’s not), but they’re not light years apart and Semin’s skillset may be more complimentary.
Also, did anyone else see Ovie hugging Semin in that picture? I know Ovie is friends with Kovalchuk too, but I think it’s naive to assume Ovie (and many others on the roster) wouldn’t be upset/thrown off by trading away Semin.
Am I the only one who doesn’t want to see Kovy on the Caps at all? I mean, he’s a great player but we’ve already got two great Russians and we don’t need to unload one of the great Russians and/or one of the best Czechs in the game for someone who isn’t going to be our franchise player.
I have a feeling that it would lash back on the Caps organization, that’s all.

Why Atlanta isn’t getting five assets for Kovalchuk…
Every year we go through this where a team is going to have to pay the sun, the moon, and the stars for the flavor of the month. And they don’t. Yes, Kovalchuk will command something more, but a high-end prospect isn’t going to be in the package.

Anything can happen in the postseason. We will have to wait and see what happens at the trade deadline before a final analysis. But I can only see the Penguins and Sabres having a shot to beat the Caps in the playoffs, and right now, I really don’t see that happening. My money is on the Caps to reach the Stanley Cup finals. The trade deadline is the only thing that can tip that in my mind.
Of course, he still managed to turn a question about the Caps (are they really that good) into an answer at least half about the Penguins.
It’s pretty cool to see the national media fellating the Caps. Personally I still fear NJD a little more than I do Buffalo, but they seem to have fallen off a bit.

After facing shots, Jose Theodore (sore hip flexor) said he feels better than expected, and barring a setback, should be ready tomorrow.

truth be told i did i wanna see holtz in there for a little bit.. but i know its not meant to be yet.. i remember that game against Carolina last year when they scored 2 shorthanded goals against us in one period and i believe we used both Varly and Nuevi in that game.. Dont wanna see something like that happen and blow his confidence to get sent back down and lose how well he was tearing it up down in the “A”
I wouldn’t mind just seeing him during warmups.

They were making fun of Jiggy, I think. Hilarious.

Heh. Gotta say, though, the one person the Ducks shouldn’t be blaming for getting torched last night is Jiggy. He kept them in it through 40 minutes of play.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I dunno, he was leaving fat rebounds right on the doorstep all night. He made some great saves, but he wasn’t as sound as could be by a longshot.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Eh, that’s how he plays. It was a good game for him. He is a big, slow, blocking goalie. I think reading where a shot goes is third on his list of “do’s.”
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Didn’t really work out for him.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Brilliant analysis. He still put up good numbers but he relys on having a good defense to clear rebounds and to limit shots on him from certain areas.
If you look over the past 10 games I bet Giggy put on the best goaltending performance the Caps have seen. It’s hard to let in 5 goals and walk out with a 90% SV%
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
No doubt it wasn’t all his fault, and he played well, I just can’t say a goalie had “a good game” when he leaves a rebound in the crease after every shot.
But what the fuck do I know.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Yeah you really wouldn’t be able to say that about most goalies but that’s why I said a good game for him. If you notice most of his covers are from pucks hitting him and then falling in front of him. He just tries to block pucks and do whatever he can with them after the fact.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I’d be going crazy if I was a Ducks fan, in that case.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Not the first time he’s made Ducks fans go crazy. Also, another reason to be skeptical of giving goalies huge deals after one or two awesome years.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Damn, I could’ve sworn I heard something last night specifically about how all of the goals were his fault…

At the rate we’re going with goalie injuries, we might too. (I keed.) Nah, Tarik’s tweet said Jose’s feeling better than expected and might be ready tomorrow. Me, I’m in no hurry, although if Neuvirth starts, Theodore backs up, and Holtby goes down to Hershey for Alzner, that’s no bad thing.

Well, when you consider that they openly returned Alzner to Hershey earlier this month for a few games so he would be eligible to play there during the Olympic break, why wouldn’t they be willing to do the same thing with Neuvirth?
Varlamov is scheduled to go to Vancouver and if he doesn’t he isn’t techincally on the Caps roster now anyway so he should be eligible to play down there too. But Neuvirth would have to be cleared off the roster for a length of time like Alzner was to get him eligible for Hershey during the break. I can’t imagine the Caps would want him sitting around for 2-1/2 weeks not playing.
If Varlamov is still rehabbing and Theodore is good-to-go, they can send Neuvrith down for a few games to make him eligible. Holtby can continue to “cheerlead” on the bench as Boudreau indicated.
But if Theordore or Varlamov don’t heal quickly enough, none of this works.

Fair enough and a good call. How many more games does Neuvirth need in Hershey to be eligible to play during the break?

IIRC the Alzner situation correctly, it has to do with games missed in the NHL and not played in the AHL. Alzner was gone for two-three games right?

I’ve sought clarification on this question and will pass it along.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Per the team, Neuvirth would have to be in Hershey for five of the Caps’ last 20 games before the break (i.e. Jan. 7-Feb. 13) to be eligible to play there during the Olympic break. Since he’s been here since Jan. 7, that means that he’d have to be in Hershey for five of the next nine games.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
In short, they’re likely crossing fingers and toes that Varly will be ready by the time Neuvirth has to go down, yes?
Thanks for the info!

sounds like he just tweeked his hip flexor. Usually resolves itself quickly. Only concern is Theo has to be one of the least flexible goalies in the NHL, so it could happen again.
Of course, the Caps also have Gumby Goalie and it hasn’t helped him avoid injuries one stinkin’ bit.

It will be Game-Worn Jersey Night in Verizon Center, as MeiGray and the Capitals will be hosting a special exhibit at Section 119 in the concourse: 35 Seasons of Capitals’ Game-Worn Jerseys.
On display will be jerseys worn throughout the years by the Caps, including jerseys worn during the team’s inaugural 1974-75 NHL season, jerseys worn during the 10th anniversary and 20th anniversary seasons. There will be jerseys on display that were once worn by Bob Carpenter, Mike Gartner, Dale Hunter, Rod Langway, Scott Stevens and many more.
Date of the game is Friday, 2/5. Might want to consider bringing a digital camera to that game.

The impression I get from reading WaPo articles in general is that you are correct, that is WaPo policy. However, rather than coming off as sound journalism, it comes off has sticking their heads in the sand and pretending they are still the go-to source for up-to-the-second information. Because, lets be honest, 15 years ago up-to-the-second had roughly the same resolution as up-to-the-quarter-day. Unfortunately for them, it just ain’t that way no more.
The other thing might well be that the source was the same for both, but Tarik reported later than Japers’ did. Not unreasonable, but only Tarik, J.P., and their hairstylists know…

After another maybe not too gentle reminder that the Caps (and other Washington sports teams) play games from October-December as well, the response from him boiled down to web traffic, meaning suckling at the money teet of the Skins.
The frustrating part is that I’m not even asking for April coverage in November, but some occasional autumn KCI visits from people not on the beat would at least satiate a perceived fanbase appetite. But hey, if they don’t want to give it to them, then it’s even more money they’ll lose, and more traffic to new media.

Now with nothing to cover until the draft, it’ll be all Caps all the time. Which is fine, but we were here before football started, and we’ll be here after it ends, so at least kiss us before F-ing us when it comes to coverage, and remember our season doesn’t start in January.

It’s been suggested the Washington Capitals might make a pitch for Kovalchuk, mostly based on the premise he’d be a great fit with Russian countrymen Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin, but the Capitals – one of the highest-scoring teams in the league – don’t need the offense.
One of? Really?
Also, anyone is of course able to say that the price for Kovalchuk may be too high to be worth it—I have my doubts as well—but to suggest that ANY team wouldn’t benefit by adding more offense is asinine. Fatboy was to Nagasaki.
Globetrotters are to the Washington Generals.
Air Supply to the American Top 40.

I think my TV is broken.
Caps are on sportscenter right now.
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
Naw man, the East leading Washington Caps, have you heard of them?
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
Surely you can’t mean the ice hockey club!
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I do indeed!
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
This is going to turn into one of those threads that people are unhappy with in the Readers’ Perspective post.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I daresay that is the most scandalous of events on record this fine day!
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Mercy me! I didn’t mean to sent you into the fits!
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
I am overwhelmed! I fear I may faint right here and now!
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Goodness no! Someone find some smelling salts!

These overstuffed couches they’ve installed at work are a real lifesaver.

I’m surprised they let you wear the dress.
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
I’m such a superstar at work this week, they’d probably let me do whatever the hell I want.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
You're the Ovechkin of your office?
When do you become captain?
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
More of the Matt Bradley because I feel beat up and I’m working so hard.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Matt Bradley?
Do you bleed easily?

Not really.

He doesn’t need an iPad, if that’s what you’re asking.

I would just like to say that I missed my bus to school this morning because I was too busy reading Japers. Discovering the Rink last spring will be the death of my Masters’ thesis, I guarantee.
How do you say "Third Wheel" in Russian?
You need a mobile device. I heard the iPad is out.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
so I’ve heard…but where did the picture go!?!

I’m very glad I didn’t discover the Rink until AFTER my master’s thesis was completed!
Kung-fu Rink Rabbit
On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"
that’s it? I’m impressed!

is there anything more elitist than collecting as many academic degrees as possible?

I’m fine with this. They are talking up what should be a very good game between two contending teams. I am happy it will be on NHL Net so I can watch tonight.
And the phrase was “with all due respect TO the Washington Capitals”. They know perfectly well whose highlights they’ll be watching tomorrow night.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Eh, I dunno. It was super dismissive.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Doesn’t really seem so bad if you read the whole quote to me:
In a season that passes in a blur thanks to the Olympic break, these games pass by all too quickly: a clash of the two best teams in the Western Conference, and arguably — with all due respect to the Washington Capitals — the two best teams in the NHL.
He’s just saying that he thinks they are arguably the two best teams. I think mentioning the Capitals there is a big sign of respect considering he could have just said:

I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I guess I can see that. You could also see it as being dismissive of the Caps, though. “These upstart Caps are no SJS and CHI.”
Eh.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
If you think it’s super dismissive of Washington, how dismissive is it of the 27 teams that didn’t even get ANY due respect?
This is a compliment, not a slap in the face.

I didn’t really mind it either…just found the wording funny given recent events (aka the Wise thing).
Completely insignificant food for thought
I thought I’d take a look at the odds that sports books are currently giving on 2010 playoff (and Olympic) outcomes. Here’s what they had to say (obviously not including all teams).
Odds to win the Stanley Cup:
Chicago 4/1
San Jose 5/1
Pittsburgh 6/1
Washington 6/1
New Jersey 7/1
Buffalo 10/1
Vancouver 12/1
Detroit 15/1
Calgary 16/1
Boston 22/1
Philadelphia 22/1
Odds to win the Prince of Wales Trophy:
Pittsburgh 5/2
Washington 5/2
New Jersey 3/1
Buffalo 5/1
Boston 10/1
Philadelphia 10/1
Odds to win Gold:
Canada 1/1
Russia 21/10
Sweden 11/2
USA 7/1
Czech Republic 15/1
Finland 16/1
Slovakia 40/1

Man, how awesome would it be to beat Chicago in the Finals?

Amazing.
That is the matching I am dying to see. That amount of firepower in the cup would be great. Plus I’m sure the league would like getting Ovie in there. Crosby one year, Ovie the next, fuel the rivalry.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Frankly, I’m dying to see the Caps somehow get the Oilers in the Cup Finals… but, no matter who we play, needing to win four out of seven games to win a Stanley Cup would be an amazing position to be in.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 28, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions
There’s one problem with that scenario. I don’t think the Oilers are making the playoffs this year.
(Or was that suggestion, of the Oilers, made in jest?)

I'm watching the blues play the oilers atm
2-1 blues with 10 left in the 3rd. Oilers are weak. Blues are bad but oilers look like something the bears would play against.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Caps v Hawks!
It’d be the greatest thing ever. Crosby-Ovechkin is all well and good, but I’ll bet Backstrom’s duel with Kane (or) would be a serious jolt. Throw in two big, win-starved TV markets watching all that speed in HD and it’s a bonanza.

Here is the correct sentence:
Chicago has Hossa and Huet on it; there’s no fucking way they’re going to win.
maybe they should make some trades with the sharks to shore up their playoff luck
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
I swear I'm not a rec' whore...
So as some of you might know, I’m trying to organize another Game Watch party, this time in Baltimore for the north-of-DC contingent at the Rink. Of course it’s open to all Rats and Rabbits, but us folks up here in Bawlmer were feeling a bit left out.
Anyways, we had a good number of folks agree on the March 14th game against the Blackhawks, and we’re trying to get a solid count of how many people will be attending, but alas our fanpost has fallen off the front page. So click HERE and a) vote in the poll if you’re attending and b) rec the post so we get back on the front page (even if you’re not attending).
Thanks everyone!
Morning skate #needsmorebradley
I just want to appreciate the fact that this morning’s “very, very optional practice” was attended by the four guys who didn’t play last night, plus Matt Bradley.
