Capitals need to be in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic
Plain and simple, the caps need to be in the Winter Classic next year. We have the best and most exciting player in the game and the best collection of young talent in the NHL. We need to get a match up against any of these teams:
- New York Rangers @ Citi Field ( Because Yankee Stadium is booked for a bowl game near new years day starting next year)
-New Jersey Devils @ New Meadowlands Stadium
-New York Islanders @ Citi Field
or do a game against a west team such as
-Minnesota Wild @ TCF Bank Stadium ( new home to the Minnesota Golden Gophers)
-Detroit Red Wings @ Comerica Park ( yea they have been in it before but i think it would still be cool)
-Columbus Blue Jackets @ Ohio Stadium (aka the Horseshoe)
-Colorado Avalanche @ Invesco Stadium ( home of the Denver Broncos)
what do ya'll think???

I could care less if we’re in the winter classic, as we’ll never be the home team, and I ain’t traveling that far for a game on New Years day. Should they be? Sure. Should they have been this year, absolutely. Great picks, NBC.
At least we lucked out with an exciting game. I still agree that NBC has a serious Atlantic Division addiction issue that needs to be dealt with at some point.

The game had an exciting finish because it was close, but I didn’t think it was a particularly good or entertaining game. Not a ton of chances by either side, a lot of sloppy play, goaltending wasn’t great. Definitely not nearly as good as the other Winter Classics.

First, I agree with Pollack, but let's see:
Rangers: opponent is good, but since Yankee Stadium is out I say FedEx or Nationals Park.
Devils: I don’t see anything wrong with this except the scheduling, after all, the field is for two football teams and the game would be on a Sat. it would be hard to work with two schedules.
Islanders: I don’t think NBC would want to use the Islanders just because of the way this years went with the Flyers being chosen over the Caps.
Wild: I would like it to the WC go west, but again NBC and their ratings issue. Other than that I see no reason this couldn’t work, the fans in MN are great and would sell it out in a minute.
Wings: I don’t want to see a team be in two in less then a 10 year span. (The reason I don’t want to see Caps v. Pens)
Jackets: Not very interesting in my opinion. Nash is the only real known player to the casual hockey fan.
Avs: I find this to be a great choice, young talent on both teams and Colorado being a surprise this year makes it interesting. But again NBC may disagree.
My vote: If it’s not in D.C. then I want it to be in Canada against either the Habs or the Canucks. But there are rumors that there will be a “Canadian Classic” next year which in case I vote for the Devils.
Я Харт не так ли?
While we can make jokes all day about the Caps being used to crappy ice, the NHL can’t count on the weather to accommodate a game anywhere south of the Mason Dixon, let alone south of New York State. These classics need to be held where the league can count on weather favorable to the event. The ice conditions are bad to begin with outdoors, but they would only be worse when we get one of our famous winter warm spells and the guys are playing in 50-degree slush.
If you’ll recall, they were seriously worried it was going to be too warm and rain this year and lucked out after all. Based on that, I say not to care about the Mason Dixon line. Should it be in Florida? No. But I think it can be pulled off here. That said, I don’t really care if we’re not the home team, but I care that it should NOT be against Pittsburgh. Of course, it will be.

If its too damn cold for us to host a super bowl then it’s cold enough to host a winter classic I say.

The people that make the ice (can’t remember that guy’s name at the moment) were saying they could make ice at NHL specs up into the 60s, so I think we should get some consideration.
I also think that they should keep it at baseball stadiums because they have more character and are usually in the city, which is a cool thing for fanfest like festivities before the game.
You are correct, and yet I don’t believe the league will ever feel comfortable enough relying on the technology for such a major event. They’ll point to a day like today (60 degrees and rainy in Washington) and ignore the fact that January warm spells are equally possible in New York, and not agree to host the Winter Classic below the Mason-Dixon line.
Not that it matters much in the scheme of things.

They’ll also point to market size and ignore the talent of the teams involved. Sorry, I’m still a little bitter about the Flyers getting picked. Mainly because I’m currently living in Boston and wanted to see the Caps at Fenway.
Anyways, I pretty much agree with you. However, I think the league probably realizes that it can only have so many more Classics above the Mason-Dixon line (and also not include any Canadian teams), and something will have to give. Considering that teams now have to bid to host the Classic, I think we have a better shot now at hosting one than even a year ago.
Ultimately I think they’ll keep up north a little bit more, but if there was one team they’d take a chance where it was a little warmer, I think it would be with the Caps.

I definitely want to see the Caps in the winter classic, but like BP I’m more concerned about the next 5.5 months.
On a side note, I’ve got to say you managed to nail almost all of my pet peeves. I guess I’m an old curmudgeon or something, but take the time to preview your post. It’s one thing to have a poorly written comment, but if you’re going to take the time to post a Fanpost/shot you might as well give it a quick once over…not only will you look smarter, but it might encourage further discussion.
/now get off my lawn
We’ve discussed this at beyond length already. The NBC and the NHL are pretty clearly eager to get the Caps in the game. The most likely/only candidates are against the Rangers in Meadowlands Stadium, the Penguins in Heinz Field, or, since it’s been mentioned so much, the Wild somewhere in Minnesota. It won’t be the Devils or the Islanders and it won’t be in Citi Field.

Minnesota would most likely be at Target Field (where the Twins will begin playing this Spring) or the new football stadium at University of Minnesota. I’m not a big fan of it, because, typically, it’s brutally cold on Jan. 1. It wouldn’t be quite as bad as the Heritage Classic, but it might be close.
Kung-fu Rink Rabbit
Notice how when the Caps have a shootout, it is the healthy type.
How about holding on until 2012?
Then Caps vs. Toronto at the Rogers’ Center (ie. the old SkyDome). To commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812, with the teams from the two cities that suffered the most damage in the conflict (Washington, and York, Canada, now Toronto)….
Let's go Caps!
It can’t be in Canada or involve a Canadian team.

Doesn’t a dome defeat the purpose of having an outdoor game?

Rematch of the 2010 Stanley Cup - Chicago vs Washington
At Nats stadium?
Promote the game, it's the NHL, not SCHL
I say Caps vs Pens, on the National Mall.
- Who cares if Pitt was in the classic a few years ago? It’d be the best possible matchup.
- You couldn’t get anywhere near 20k fans seated at a game on the Mall, but that’s ok too. Bill it as an intimate event. People watch it on TV regardless, and I can’t tell you how many people(who were NOT at the game) said to me: “Man, the views at that game were horrible! Fans at Fenway were so far away from the action! Must’ve sucked.”
I dunno about that. Caps vs Pens is the not-so-secret weapon that the NHL has. If things go downhill from here, they can always pull it out for massive ratings. Don’t need to burn that matchup when it’s not needed, because after that what is there that doesn’t involve a Canadian team? Only Avs-Red Wings and Caps-Flyers come to mind. And New York Rangers-New York Islanders/New Jersey Devils. The first could work, second could work, third and fourth involve “boring” teams.

When ice surface technology improves, I’d love to see a Thanksgiving Day / New Years Day home and away series against the Rangers — game one at West Point, game two at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
I’d love the Caps to become the unofficial team of the Navy. Go Navy!

Dallas in Minnesota…wait, there’s a team in Minny already.
Dallas is an interesting case. They’ve turned into a solid southern market and would probably be a great place for a Classic if not for the weather. How would they be able to host one? Neutral venue, like the Super Bowl?
