A tricky game tonight. The Coyotes bring a lot of speed. Should be an entertaining one. Hope Neuvirth’s confidence is back up after his last two outings he ended up being pulled ….

I expect a large percentage of the game will be played in the Yotes’ zone, as they’re a very defensive, low-scoring team.

by Jake Shapiro on Jan 23, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Who here thought that Alex Ovechkin would NOT be leading the NHL in shots this late in the year? Sure, he’s missed a few games, but still…

by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 23, 2010 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Given that the team is all shooting more, it’s not too surprising. The Caps had too much reliance on him to put the puck in the net when surprise, surprise, people like Backstrom are great at it too. A lot more confidence for goal scoring on this team.

by sydtron on Jan 23, 2010 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

This is surprising, yes. But to me this sort of goes back to the lack of hat tricks this season. I’ll take a team with the scoring diversity and depth we have over one superstar shooter/scorer any day of the week. And like I said in the Fehr post earlier today…teams are focused on covering him and preventing him from shooting, which then opens up avenues for the rest of the team. I like this development, and it really bodes well for the post-season.

by SeattleCapsFan on Jan 23, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

The bigger thing is who would expect OV to have more assists than goals. It’s all about the +/- and the vics for OV this year, though. He would trade all of his trophies for a date with Lord Stanley

by Beakers Lab on Jan 23, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

So who is our starting goalie supposed to be exactly? Is this giving Theo a break or is Neuvy expected to take up the reins until he starts playing abominably again?

by galaxysong9 on Jan 23, 2010 5:32 PM EST reply actions

Theo is getting a rest I assume. One dumb puck handling play aside, he had two absolutely monster games. He’s earned himself a rest.

by sydtron on Jan 23, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

With a little bit of “hey, let’s see what Neuvy can do again” mixed in.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 23, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think part of this is that they want to keep Neuvy fresh. Development wise he’s supposed to be getting x number of starts. If you’ve got an established backup in net it’s appropriate to sit him for long stretches. If you’ve got a potential future starter he’s not going to develop if he’s playing once every two or three weeks

by souldrummer on Jan 23, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

I’d say the former. Theo played spectacularly this past week, it’s time to let Neuvy redeem himself from his last two starts.

How do you say "Third Wheel" in Russian?

by SeattleCapsFan on Jan 23, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

BB said it was a combination of not wanting Neuvy to get “too rusty” and the fact that Theo will quite possibly play 3 more games next week so he wanted to give him a rest.

by caps123 on Jan 23, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone know when Varly is going to be better? Always finding “he’ll be out for another week”

by hockeyman33 on Jan 23, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

probably the week the winter games start

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

by Rather Bengt on Jan 23, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Realistically, I think we have to look at after the Olympic break. The official word is that he will start skating next week, but he won’t start skating until his knee pain is gone. He still will have to skate alone for a few days, then work his way up to taking shots in practice, etc., then go to Hershey for a rehab, etc.

"We take the shortest route to the puck and arrive in ill humor." - Bobby Clarke

by Karl W on Jan 23, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

And he isn’t eligible to play in Hershey during the Olympics, is he?

by hockeyman33 on Jan 23, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

oops, forgot he is in the Olympics. but saying he is hurt, cut from the olympic team, and ready for rehab games by the end of the break, he isn’t eligible?

by hockeyman33 on Jan 23, 2010 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t he at least be in Hershey to rehab during the Olympics? I mean it would just be a rehab assignment like his last one.

by caps123 on Jan 23, 2010 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

i’m thinking of Alzner. He had to get a certain number of games in to play there during the olympics

by hockeyman33 on Jan 23, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah that’s true. But he’s not playing as a rehab assignment though, whereas Varly would be.
