Saturday Caps Clips: Coyotes @ Caps Game Day

- The Caps: Comeback Kids. [CSN Washington]
- Alex Ovechkin is a great player and all, but he gets fat on a weak Southeast Division, right? Wrong. [Hockey Or Die!]

- Despite their constant protestations to the contrary, Pens fans are obsessed with Ovechkin. [D.C. Sports Bog]

- Somewhat related to that last point, does anyone have any creative ideas for how we can encourage NBC to pick Caps/'Hawks over Flyers/Rangers for March 14? Something tells me that the Peacock would be leaning towards making an awful decision for hockey fans.

- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 2001, "Peter Bondra became the Washington Capitals all-time leader in game-winning goals, when he picked up the 55th of his career in a 5-2 win against the Lightning at Tampa Bay. He broke the record held by Mike Gartner." To answer your next question, 34.

Do you think he knows the size of the “C” is part of the rulebook? Approximately 3". His comment, along with “steggy” calling backs goal “selfish” make me appreciate Joe b. and locker even more.
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 23, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions
Not to let him off the hook at all, but listening to the description of the Backstrom goal made me wonder if his point had to do with Nicky doing the unexpected. As in, it was a great play, whereas normally you’d expect him to be “unselfish” and pass the puck, not shoot. Just a lousy announcer who doesn’t know how to choose his words correctly.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Well at first he called him unselfish then quickly changed it to selfish. He didn’t elaborate on why he thought it was selfish. I agree that he could have been using it as a compliment but it us and odd choice of words.
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 23, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions
I haven’t heard the “selfish” line, but I’d bet that I’ve lamented in the past on this site that I wish Nick would be a little more selfish from time to time.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Exactly, It’s really more how it came out. Probably more because he started out using “unselfish”, just the way you’ve described. I guess the Caps were so good in the third that he got tongue tied.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It was hard for backs NOT to be selfish on that play. Whenthe D gives you a wide berth and the goalie shows you a massive 3" hole to shoot at!
by dcsportsfan1 on Jan 23, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions
JP, the call is right there in the game highlights reel on the recap. For my money the more selfish play was the cross-check he received to the small of his back as he rounded the net that sent him sprawling,
IS KEPTIN NOW
The more selfish play was chasing Flash to the corner to finish that check. You absolutely cannot chase a guy to finish him on the PK.

If I recall correctly it went something like, “And the unselfish Nick Backstrom circles out front…HE SCORES…well, I guess he was selfish there…”
I did not read the tone as a knock on Nick…just that the announcer was anticipating a pass and retracted his earlier presumption of a pass.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
My recollection is something the effect of “Goal! Very unselfish play th- or I should say, selfish play there by Nicklas Backstrom”.
just a bumbling, fumbling, stupid call by steggy. typical example of steggy tripping over his own words. he clearly didn’t mean it as an insult, but it’s not as cut-and-dry as you write it, either.
fleischmann behind the net…back behind the goal for backstrom…knuble’s in front…BACKSTROM FIRES AND SCORES…there’s an unselfish play, or i should say a selfish play by backstrom…the score to make it 5 to 3. we talk about how he’s dishing the puck all the time…not this year. nicklas backstrom scores another one.
it was just weird that after the goal had been scored, steggy said the play was unselfish (as if he’d been cueing up the line as soon as backstrom took the puck), and it was weirder still that he thought “selfish” was an appropriate correction. if you listen to the quote without the context, it actually does sound like there’s derision in his voice. i know that’s not the case, but the whole thing was strange and uncomfortable to listen to.
by Natty Bumppo on Jan 23, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions
I think the problem is that throughout most of the world the word “selfish” it thought to be a bad thing and has derogatory connotations.
Nick passing is selfish and him shooting is selfish – on both actions he is hoping his team will score.

I don’t make a habit of defending P’burgh sportscasters, but it was patently obvious that he was pointing out the irony of Backis scoring instead of passing. (They do enough on their on to mock. We don’t need to make stuff up.)

I’d be more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if he weren’t always a raging homer and if he hadn’t accused Ovechkin of diving when he wasn’t even on the ice only a minute before Backstrom’s goal.
Intentional or not in this case, giving backhanded compliments to the other team is SOP for the Pens announcing crew.

There we go.
In all seriousness, since it’s not part of the flex schedule group that day I’d guess the league would have to make a little noise to the network about it.

It is. The problem is the Carcillo/Gaborik dust up combined with another Torts meltdown makes the Flyers vs Rangers game that day compelling drama. Obviously, Caps vs Hawks is better hockey, but I’m afraid NBC suits will go with the drama instead.

Yeah, but they’ve got another opportunity for the same matchup on April 11th, and if they’ve already taken Detroit/Chicago on March 7 (the best choice that day), I’d say that’s the pick then. Boston at Washington is probably going to be a good game, but Boston’s not living up to their end of the deal at the moment.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Any thoughts on how “we, the people” can influence the decision? Online petitions are lame, but maybe there are other options.

Well if there’s some way that the people can get a little face time with the NBC booth and truck folks at the 2/7 game to make the case, that would be ideal.

Not to get all “conspiracy” ish, but I wonder what power/influence Ed Snyder now has over NBC’s hockey schedule. The Flyers couldn’t even beat the Mummer’s on New Years Day, yet they still figure prominently in NBC’s flex schedule. Cross promotion, perhaps?
Nice conspiracy theory, but I’m pretty sure the flex schedule was set before the Comcast deal. And besides, I’ll wager that even for him, money trumps a lousy game on national TV.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

Right. I know the deal isn’t done yet, just agreed to. And the broadcast entities are far more valuable than his teams.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Agreed. Maybe the Flyers thing is too little compared to the NBC broadcast rights. Though I still think that his company is behind the whole NHL/Versus/DirectTV debacle.
When I lived up there, you couldn’t get Comcast/Philadelphia on DirectTV, even if you paid for the sports package. That meant DirectTV subscribers couldn’t get Sixers, Flyers, and many Phillies games, unless they stayed with Comcast. Now, they’re using the same tactic by not agreeing to terms with DirectTV with their Versus Channel. It’s hurting the NHL to lose those viewers, but since there aren’t that many subscribers in the Flyers fanbase anyway, why should Comcast care?
Actually, I think there is something to the Comcast/DirectTV thing. I read a small blurb in the business section the other day about an FCC ruling, although it applied to TimeWarner Cable. Something to the effect that they have to sell to the satellite companies.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

Actually they wound up with the slot they have mainly because its what TV folks want. They easily could have a game starting at Noon PT on Sunday. It just makes sense to have them on later ET time on Saturday so they won’t have competition they’d have for viewers on Sunday.

…What Ovi said to Theo after the first Penguins goal
The Penguins’ first goal was a gift as goalie José Theodore accidentally redirected a long pass between his own feet, right to the goal mouth, where Crosby scored a two-inch goal.
Ovechkin, the new Caps captain, quickly skated over.
“I could tell by his expression he didn’t want to start laughing in my face,” Theodore said. “He said, ‘Forget it.’ But it’ll make the bloopers.”

Not sure what the point of your question was. I actually posted this a couple of minutes before J.P. posted it above if you point was that I posted something that had already been posted.
If not and your point was that those lineup issues are the same as every other game, that just isn’t the case. No one was sure prior to this AM whether or not Green was going to play tonight and Sloan has been in the lineup the past 6 games.

With all due respect, its just Hershey, I mean cmon.
In all honesty though, I bet they could hack it (though not a top team) in the bigs.
While I dig the Bears and what they’re accomplishing this season, there’s no way they finish as anything but the team with the most lotto balls in the NHL. They’d come to play every night and work their guts out in the process, but NHL squads are uniformly faster, bigger and far more skilled. Aucoin isn’t a viable option for 1C in the bigs, for example. While a Carlznerson pairing is dominant at the AHL level, we’d all cringe mighty hard if they had to chew up top pair minutes up here.
One or two games the other team sleptwalked through, sure. Whole season? Think ’75 Caps bad.

Ovechkin = Green Backs
by red army line on Jan 23, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree; how lost do the top-rung AHL guys that aren’t immediate NHL prospects look when they get up to that level? Giroux isn’t an NHL quality player, but he tears the AHL apart, same with Aucoin. That’s two-thirds of your top line, good luck scoring goals with that group going up against a big-boy shutdown pairing or checking line.
Against NHL competition that came in determined and ready to play for two points, I can’t see the Bears having the puck for longer than 15 minutes a game. The opposing forwards would just be that much better than the D and the opposing D that much better than the forwards – they’d get overpowered from the net on out. I can’t really see them running a breakout against a real forecheck with the reaction time and decision making that most of the career AHL guys display. Similarly, I don’t see them as able to force mistakes from an NHL goalie and defense and getting sustained zone pressure that results in goals, or being able to create on the rush with speed and skill – they simply don’t have it in the requisite measure outside of a couple of players (Perreault comes to mind, but I’m blanking on anyone else).
Is it impossible that they’d win a couple of games? No. I think they’d win a few on teams taking the game completely for granted. Teams that would otherwise end up in the lowest tier of the NHL. It’s fine to say that there were a lot of Hershey players in the CHI preseason game – there were. But there were also a lot of Caps and it was preseason. In addition, almost everyone on the ice for the ‘Hawks already had their roster spot sewn up. At that point, I feel like they’re just getting used to game pace and trying to avoid an injury.
That said, I wouldn’t wager on them getting past 30 standings points for the whole year. They’d get slaughtered against anyone that really came to play.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!
by Knee high to a duck on Jan 23, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
If they’re playing the same system, then yes. They don’t have the skill or speed to play a high pressure system. They could lay back a little, play trap or something, knowing that they have an almost (if not already) NHL caliber goalie playing for them, and a pretty good one at that.
Small nitpick—IIRC it was 17 Hershey boys and 3 Caps, or something obscene like that. Or maybe that was Chicago:AHL.

"I am ready for his provocations"
by PaintDrinkingPete on Jan 23, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions
Not really. Nothing involving the Yotes has been normal this year courtesy of the Balsille mess. Because of bankruptcy stuff dragging on they couldn’t sign a TV deal until right before the season had started. They were only able to get a deal with FSN AZ.
Problem was by then FSN had their schedule with other sports already set. In years past Yotes had an over air broadcast partner as well, but this year no one wanted the games. I can’t blame them given how the team was devalued over the summer.
As for tonight specifically, FSN AZ would be run by complete morons if they tried to move the Duel in the Desert to the afternoon to run the Yotes game live. Ratings wise it would make zero sense.
A man gotta have a code
by Carl Putnam on Jan 23, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions
That does make sense (ratings wise)—it’s just too bad FSN-AZ doesn’t have an overflow channel (like CSN+ here), to show the game.
"I am ready for his provocations"
by PaintDrinkingPete on Jan 23, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions
True. Though given the Yotes measily ratings that probably would only be cost efficient if they were using that channel to carry other programming as well. In addition,if ratings were low they’d have a hard time getting carriers to carry the additional station.
Trust me, they’d get about 1,000 people tops watching that game tonight if they did that. It would be like putting on a Hopkins vs Cuse LAX game on CSN+ at the same time Maryland was playing Georgetown.

I wouldn’t say “obsessed” is the right word, but on a night when the Pens aren’t playing, the Caps are normally the first team I look for on the schedule. There’s no denying the Caps are an exciting team to watch. If I’m just watching a game for the sake of a game, that’s exactly what I want. Ovechkin just happens to lead the way on that front.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I admit I too occasionally tune into FSN to watch Pitt games, not necessarily cheering for any team but watching good hockey teams play is always entertaining.
People are stupid, a person is smart. This leads me to believe there must be at least one smart hockey fan in Philly.
See, I’ll obviously also watch other games on non-Caps nights—but I don’t watch the Penguins because of the broadcast team. Keep in mind that for some reason GCL almost always takes the Pens’ feed for Pittsburgh games (probably even more often than they pick the opposing team’s feed for Caps games—seriously, I think we’re still in single digits for the number of times the CSN feed has been provided on GCL this season).
by sixsevenfiftysix on Jan 23, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
Eh, I don’t mind Errey and Steigey enough to miss a potentially entertaining game. I do like to watch the Pens when the Caps aren’t on. They play a fast game and have a bunch of skill – worth watching for the sake of the hockey.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
It can be unbearable at times, even for Pens fans. I know last week during the (I think) Islanders game, Errey was talking with a mouthful of food. I kid you not. And then during the preview of the Caps/Pens game, an NHL Network guy asked him what some of Pittsburgh’s strong points were and he said, “Well I think we have…”
And then that’s when it hit me. He seriously still thinks he’s on the team. He used the royal “we.” I don’t want my favorite team’s broadcasters to think they’re still on the team. It’s kinda…sad. Sad in that sort of Robert Di Nero at the end of Raging Bull sort of way.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
I don’t think JP was saying it like that and the link certainly doesn’t imply that.
There’s a running theme of a certain pens blog, and many pens fans on the internet, saying that Caps fans are obsessed with penguins and especially crosby. They talk about how sad and pathetic it is, how they don’t care about the caps and caps fans, etc. It’s obviously bullshit, and now, it’s pretty obvious through all their effort to say they don’t care that they have just as many fans that are on the hate bandwagon.
It’s really a tired shtick of them standing atop their ivory tower acting like they are so elite and superior just because they were able to slum in the standings and start selling out their arena again a year before the Capitals could. “Douchebags” doesn’t begin to scratch the level of ignorance and homerism.

Caps/Hawks
Here’s an argument to have this game on NBC over the Flyers/Rangers….Both team are shoe-in’s for the playoffs, they are of the 3 highest scoring teams in the league (points and goals), it is a possible stanley cup match-up, Ovechkin vs Toews
only thing that the flyers/rangers got is a bigger television audience, which unfortunately might be enough.

Maybe the best way to get them to listen is to get them to watch…The caps and the hawks might have to win a substantial amount of their games played between now and then and become the top two teams in the league, after all, actions speak louder than words…I’m not sure if there’s anything we can do personally.

They have done just the type of ads you have spoken about before in prior OLY years. Not sure they work all that well, especially when broadcasting them to the choir.
The major flaw is that NBC already has a game to broadcast the week before on the 7th. They aren’t going to focus their ads on a game further out.

I, for one, am not convinced. Granted, they may lose tonight, as is possible on any night—but I’m hoping to see them come out strong and continue to score as they have been. While it’s true that Backstrom has a 55.2 FO% on the PP, that doesn’t explain the effectiveness of the PP. Counter-example: The guy you mentioned, Sidney Crosby. Sid is winning draws on the PP at 58.7% and the Pens have one of the worst PPs in the entire league.
I’m guessing the Caps are so effective on the PP because they have three elite goal scorers (8, 28, 52), two elite playmakers (19, 28, I’m not even counting Green, who has the most assists on the team and leads the league in As from the blueline) and someone who can screen the goalie and get dirty goals (16, 21, 22). Winning possession doesn’t hurt, but it’s not the sole, or even primary determinant.

Spot on. We have tons of skill on the PP, and it shows. The only time a stud face off man would show his value would be when your team scores without giving up possession. The Caps generally score after at least one clear, meaning the first face off is largely irrelevant.
