2009 Forward Draft Review
There is some really great stuff in here. GMGM definitely looks good for drafting Mackan and Eaken. I'm still skeptical about Cassavant but if his outburst is because he improved his skating he could be an absolute steal. Considering the closing comments about the SEL and MPS/Mackan, it's real hard not to be extremely excited about Mackan.

And SDR is performing 35 spots higher than his draft spot in the 2008 draft. But he sprinkled in a gaffe or two in that draft as well.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Broda’s got him beat, if I did my math right. Great stuff man.

True, and Broda is having a down year. I still question his skating, like Cassavant, and he’s an overage WHL player this year, but it does make him look good. SDR isn’t supposed to be a scorer, yet he looks like a steal even by the scorer-biased metrics. The beauty of it is that his real value is in the stuff that this chart isn’t even showing. I didn’t do the work, I just relayed the message.

Broda had a hell of a night tonight. Natural hat trick as the Hitmen beat Moose Jaw 5-0.

Do you get to watch him regularly? Can you give us a first-hand take on him? I saw him skate once at training camp and thought he had a short, choppy stride. That’s pretty much what has me doubting him, but again, I only saw him once in a training camp scrimmage.

Hard not to be very excited about Mackan. His numbers seem rather comparable to Backstrom’s in the SEL. Throw in the WJC captaincy and the fact that is nickname is sandwich and good god.
I don’t think his numbers are quite as good as Backstrom’s were, but he’s holding his own in the SEL as a teen so that’s enough to get me going.

If he turns out as 80% of the player that Backstrom is, I’ll be over the moon. Which isn’t saying that I expect little from Johansson, more like commentary on how well Backs developed.
The word is Mackan is defensively responsible, right? That’d fit the mold of a skilled C for the PK, so they can skate and threaten better. Pretty exciting for the 2C battle in the upcoming seasons, especially if AnGus can recover his trajectory.

Angus… I’m not even hopeful for anymore.
Mackan v. MP is where the real 2C battle is going to be. Yes, Mackan is defensively responsible, and man can he skate like the wind. I wonder how much of his defensive game is system and how much is his hockey sense. I suspect it’s a bit of both.

SDR, keepin’ it real and taking a kneeing and a ‘check from behind’ penalty that result in two PP goals against in a 6-3 loss:

May want to work a bit on that whole ‘over the edge’ thing.

Yeah. It’s obviously something to watch out for. At this point it may be the biggest obstacle to him reaching the NHL. But he’s been doing well lately and you know guys like him are going to get those PIMs on occasion. He just was to work on minimizing it.

In more prospect news, Mackan’s SEL team Farjestad BK is also on a nice winning streak, having won five of their last six and those victories against the better teams in the league. I haven’t looked at the game reports to see his contributions, but probably at least three or four of those games have been played since his return from the WJC. Coincidence? Who knows. It’s fun to think so!
BTW, this chart looks somehow…familiar.

Bad link to chart. Try this and klik on “Ligatabell”
Never mind. It’s a dynamic page or something. Basically it’s a “ups-and-downs” chart with Farjestad enjoying the coveted green up arrow of approval.

As long as I'm poking around the Swedish hockey news
Foppa is in the midst of yet another “comeback” from yet another injury, or whatever.
He got tossed from a game recently – 2 minutes for crosschecking, 20 and a game for whingeing.
I hope this type of drama doesn’t drag Nicky’s game down in the ’Lympics.
