Why Tom Boswell (and the Post?) ignores hockey?

"Hockey's biggest problem __I don't care how many years you've watched it, and I've been doing it for 35 years since they came to town__ you can't REALLY see what's happening unless you watch it in slow motion! Then the skill level is almost unbelievable. But watching at full speed you don't see nearly as much of what is "really" hapening as you do in the three (more) major sports. IOW, it's not just that it's hard to see the puck. It's that the important aspects of the game __the basic skills__ take place at a speed, and in a welter of action, that is just too tough for most people's eyes to decode."

Boswell is a baseball guy first and foremost. He’s used to slow, mellow, laid back sports. Hockey is the worlds fastest team sport, after all.

I like going to the occasional MLB game (gotta go to Baltimore to see that…zing!). But I’d rather watch hockey.

Did you know that ice hockey is the only sport where there’s no out of bounds. Sure the puck can leave the rink, but the players in the play can’t go out of play (except to the bench, where someone will come in for them.) What’s also funny is that baseball is the only sport where a play can be made out of bounds (a foul pop up is still an out…)

Let's go Caps!

The “no out of bounds” thing is huge for hockey. I’ve played with guys that grew up playing lacrosse and didn’t want to get hit but never learned that you can’t do that and be a good hockey player.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

I used to go to those games at USAir! We had box seats through my father’s work with Budweiser, and unsurprisingly, Warthogs tickets always seemed to be available. For some odd reason, clients just weren’t itching to go to an indoor soccer game.

Does indoor lacrosse still exist? The one with the boards and where the goalies wear big pads like hockey goalies? I used to watch that on ESPN 2 and it was pretty cool.

It does take a large investment of time watching before you know enough about the game to follow all the action. That is the truth. And glowing pucks don’t help.

HD’s extended viewing frame does help some, though.

Was it really ever so hard to find the puck on a tube tv? I mean.. just look and see where the players are mostly focused. And generally, the guy with two hands on his stick waggling the blade around is the one that has it.

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

by jordanDC on Jan 14, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

My general point was that it’s hard to follow the puck – as you say, you have to extrapolate from what the players are doing some times – but even more than that, a lot of times following the puck is not the most informative way to watch the game. You have to watch what the other players are doing away from the puck. The larger field of view in HD helps with that.

Put another way, any idiot can watch a football game and understand what’s going on, at least enough to follow the game. Hockey requires a greater level of knowledge to watch enjoyably.

I’m comfortable with that, btw.

"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"

by fat_daddyo on Jan 14, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Great point. I’ve said it before, but I’ll reiterate. After watching the game for a while you can figure out what is going on and what players are doing by just looking at the skaters, whether or not you can see the puck. I know there was a turnover in the neutral zone when I see the swooping regroup. I know the puck was shot wide when all the skaters angle to the one side of the ice. I know that someone got a stick on Crosby when he goes aerial like he skated over a land mine. Little clues.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

No. I used to watch Caps games when I was a freakin kid. Not exactly HD back then. Fornes/Koken on WDCA. I always find that its a weak excuse used by those who won’t put the time in to learn the game. Is it as easy to follow on TV as basketball. Well, of course not. On the other hand, it really ain’t all that hard. After all Milbury is able to.

To me this is a cop out. If Boswell wanted to learn how to follow the game, he would spend the time to do it. All of us have. I’ll agree that watching on TV makes the game much more difficult to appreciate, but to say that the game is happening too fast, and therefore not worth covering is absurd.

Baseball is easy, but unless you cared to know you wouldn’t understand the strategy behind a hit and run. Football is easy, but you certainly didn’t see the athleticism of Jerry Rice as he breaks down a DB until a replay because the cameras are all on Montana. I can’t buy an argument from a “sports guy” that hockey is that much different.

we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.

by Sct112 on Jan 14, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

I would say that any sport is difficult to follow at some level. Watching a baseball game on TV, you lose the intricacies of a good splitter- until the slow-mo replay is shown and you can really see the seams. In football, whenever Ray Rice runs the ball, I lose track of the play- until the slow motion replay is shown. I feel like I could go on about any sport

Thing is, Boswell’s quote says (at least I infer) that you can try really hard to learn hockey for 35 years, and still not see much on TV.

To which my response is “am I really that much smarter and more observant than Tom Boswell?” I don’t really think so. I’m in the “cop out” camp.

by David Getz on Jan 14, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

Fine, but he seems to be using the speed as an excuse for why he hasn’t picked up the game and isn’t interested in it. If he’s truely been watching for 35 years, and hasn’t figured out whats going on so that he can follow it on TV he’s either not trying, or he’s dumb. I assume its a lack of effort because he seems pretty intelligent, and shame on him for that. His job is sports…

by Sct112 on Jan 14, 2010 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Boz is in love with hockey lately. His chats, while fun, don’t always result in him expressing himself particularly well. Given how frequently he’s said he tapes games over the past couple years, I think what he was trying (and failing) to say was that it can be a formidable barrier to getting new fans.

However, as I’m sure everyone here can attest to, take a completely non-interested person to one live game, and they’re hooked for life.

by RedBirdie on Jan 14, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

The difference is that baseball and football have so much more down time to show replays and allow announcers to explain things to viewers than does hockey. Since hockey is not only a faster game, but also allows less time for analysis on t.v. it makes it especially hard for casual viewers to learn the game just by watching it (relative to other sports).

Unless of course the intermission reports would do a good job of breaking down more than one play from the period and didn’t pack 10+ minutes of commercials into every intermission.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Rob Parker on Jan 15, 2010 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

There is something to it, but it’s not an acceptable position for a professional that covers sports. I have said for a long time that casual fans have a harder time appreciating hockey because if you haven’t done it on skates it’s harder to appreciate. They make it look so easy that people overlook the skill required. Battling for a puck in the corner is not glamorous, but happens a hundred times a game and is overlooked by most people because it’s not flashy. But it’s incredibly hard and deserves more respect. But if you’re a professional… then it’s your job to learn the sport and actually try to cover it well.

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Rob Parker on Jan 14, 2010 4:47 PM EST reply actions

Agreed whole-heartedly. I’ve never played organized football or basketball, but am pretty sure I’m not lost watching those games, whereas people who’ve never played hockey often are (even long-time viewers). It’s probably the sport that most needs you to have played it to understand it. I think most fans I know that haven’t played and who ARE very knowledgeable have regular discussions with those who have who can shed some light on nuances of the game. I guess you could say that about every sport, but I think it’s a bigger issue in hockey.

To your point along the boards, the one thing I most try to explain to people is the sheer exhaustive nature of hockey. I always say that I’ve tried almost every sport there is and NOTHING anywhere near as tiring as hockey. That’s why I love the board battles so much, they are the SINGULARLY most exhausting part of this most exhausting game… and to the casual fan they just don’t look it.

I might get shelled here, but I almost completely agree with him. Honestly, did anyone see exactally how Backstrom scored that goal last night? I THOUGHT I saw it, but what he did was completely different than what I saw. (I also thought Knubes scored until I saw him mouth to the ref that he didn’t.)

A guy like Semin is a great example. Can the average fan appreciate the skate work that helps him control the puck as well. Probably not. Until you get a good grasp of flow of the game, speed, timing and rules, you can’t even begin to let your brain try to pick up on the little, more awesome things like Ovie’s shots through D-man’s legs.

I wouldn’t say that it’s impossible, it just takes more time than sports that stop every 7 seconds for a snooze to let your brain process what you just saw (and get every conceivable replay).

I will say, broadcasting of games has to be improved in the coming years. Best innovation ever is that floating camera above the QB. I’d love for arenas to put cameras under the scoreboard to give me a blue-line-in view, especially on a power-play. Baseball is one of the few sports that has the viewing angles right for just about every play.

Another thing I’d like sports produces to implement is a player-tracking system. It’s not hard. but give me a GUI HUD like in a sports video game. For example, baseball. Give me a translucent view of the field with dots where the defenders are. If a guy’s on base, expand that and show me video of what the runner is doing. Same can be done for football (though less affective) and hockey.

by FFSEnough on Jan 14, 2010 5:00 PM EST reply actions

I don’t agree with him, it sounds like he needs a High Def DVR, he could slow down play and rewind as needed.

All in all I think the fast pace helps the game. It makes it more interesting and suspenseful. Especially the way the caps have been scoring this year. I don’t think I’d enjoy Ovechkin’s shot or Varly’s saves as much if they slowed it down.

I don’t mean to change the subject, but I thought that one of the reasons for the new post lockout rules was to speed up the game, so that we don’t have 1 – 2 games all the time anymore, and so we have more interesting game play, where the players can show off their skills. A slower game didn’t work then, I don’t think it’ll work again.

I can see one point...

One of the things I can’t stand about televised hockey is when they come in for a tight closeup of “the action” and fail to cover the “other action” that might be going on behind the play, or over on the other side of the ice, or someone snaps off a pass and it takes the TV guys a second to find their butts to get a new angle because suddenly the puck is all the way over there, and the camera’s pointing here, and… yeah, it can be a pain in the butt to watch on television, but I manage.

Hell, I manage “watching” games on the radio with little trouble, and if I can visualize a game with only audio input, I’m sure a professional like Boswell can too, if he puts his mind to it.

I know I definately don’t enjoy listening to games on the radio. Especially when the announcers are talking about non related hockey things while the game is actually progressing..

In terms of reporting Hockey, I think the Post should really concider finding a sports reporter that genuinly likes the game, because let’s face it, Hockey is the ONLY thing DC has going for it right now.

by SemiSteckel on Jan 14, 2010 10:39 PM EST reply actions

Prejudice

There is a long history in DC of dissing the Caps and hockey generally. I don’t know if Sonny, Billy and Sam were prejudiced about it, but Kornheiser and Wilbon are pathologically against both hockey and soccer. I don’t know why. It might be that they just love sports with lots of time outs so they can run their mouths and sponsors get paid.

Speaking of running mouths, I laughed when Locker the other night actually admitted talking over goals. That was the night I think when they completely failed to discuss a Caps penalty that happened right before a break. Never effing mentioned it.

by Bartolo on Jan 15, 2010 5:47 PM EST reply actions

I’ve always felt (and previously stated) hockey should take the lead in technology and don’t be so concerned with real-time broadcast. Spend time choosing the best angle for each shot/each hit, the best camera for following puck movement, even switch to slo-mo in “real-time” for a great move or to show something particularly hard to see like a puck crossing the goal line or a nasty hit. Bring real cinematic tension and power to the broadcast event, and make it easier to follow the play.

I know they are reliant upon what the broadcasters offer to some degree, but the technology is there.

Guess I’ll have to stitch something together and send it in myself…
