Tuesday Caps Clips: Caps @ Lightning Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's Southeast showdown from Vogs, Peerless and NHL.com, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Raw Charge for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- This is the second meeting of the season between these two teams, with the Caps taking the first 3-0 down in Tampa (which is also the site of Michal Neuvirth's first NHL start and win last Valentine's Day). The Caps have won the last dozen meetings between the two teams... can the Caps make it a lucky 13?
- Speaking of Neuvirth, his new mask provides a great excuse to run down some of the great goalie masks in team history. Yahtzee! [Rock The Red.net]
- John Erskine is questionable for tonight's game (...nah... too easy), and Neuvy's head is on straight. [Capitals Insider]
- Have we mentioned that Neuvirth's been awesome? [Homer McFanboy]
- So has the kid holding down the fort in Hershey, Braden Holtby. [A Bears Minute]
- New Alex Ovechkin translations make any day instantly better. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- AO could still "run away and hide with the goal-scoring trophy." I wonder if that is meant to be taken literally or figuratively. [The Hockey News]
- A rejuvenated Tom Poti is a very good thing for the Caps. [WaPo]
- Fresh power rankings are out with the Caps up two to second at CBSSports, up six to second at The Hockey News, up two to third at SportingNews, down one (huh?) to fifth at ESPN, holding at fifth at National Post, up two to sixth at TSN, and up two to seventh at CBC.
- Scott Burnside on the Caps' goalie situation (in which the names Turco and Biron are thrown around) and AO as captain. [ESPN]
- Buy or sell the Caps as being "built on scrappy foundation"? (And yes, that's "scrappy" with an "s.") [SI]
- Nice Tomas Fleischmann profile over at the Players' Association site. Wait - there's still a Players' Association? [NHLPA]
- "[W]ith all due respect, it's hockey." That's pretty much all you need to know about The Washington Post's priorities, no? Godspeed, Tarik. [WaPo]
- Pretty cool look at AO's recent trip to Vancouver. [Canucks TV (YouTube; h/t YNC)]
- Get to know Steve Kolbe. [PressBox]
- In which the Caps are superheros. Perhaps someone who's a bigger geek than I can explain the Ovechkin choice. [FFODC]
- Is Donald Brashear the worst player in the League? [The Puck Stops Here]
- Mathieu Perreault is coming up big for the Bears. Get it? [LDN]
- Bear Tracks! [LDN]
- Believe me when I say that stuff like this means more to us than the accolade to which it refers and that we do "accept" that top spot in part on behalf of the entire Caps Blogosphere, which both pushes and inspires us. [OFB]
- Finally, happy birthday to a couple of Swedish ex-Caps, Josef Boumedienne and Ulf Dahlen.

My reply got misplaced (not sure if it was me or SBN) but this is what it said:
Have you tried using the "Import from Word" feature? I haven’t made many FanPosts, but the ones I did were drafted in Word and imported. It’s easier to manage the links that way.

I’ll try that next time. But really it’s adding or moving a link that gives me heartburn.

Are you good with HTML? You can view the post as straight HTML and edit links that way. I find it a little easier, but that could just be me.

Me too, but … there’s a lot there I can’t argue with. I had the impression that this article was written by someone who came in expecting to write about the SouthLeast division and the Caps’ crappy defense and goaltending, and came out blown away as much as the Thrashers did. He then looks for things to write about, so he makes that up.

Not for nothing, but I was reading the sort of discussion between Nate, Corey and Ed last night, and in between that and hearing the Junkies being unsure “what to talk about” this morning, I’d say that by whatever measure you want to categorize DC’s hockey success, the fact that their success isn’t covered as such by its local correspondents is embarrassing.
I’d even extend it a little further, and suggest that save for player movement news, local coverage at 6 is mainly restricted to day of or day after games. The talk about unleashing the red is nice and all, but you’d have to look hard to find any mention of a road trip last night.
So you’ll forgive me if I don’t care if ESPN mispronounces Alex Semin’s name one more time when Lindsay, Brett, Feldy or Tim barely know how to do it.

The Junkies tattoo rant ended up being pretty funny this morning, right around the time you posted this.
I heard a little of that (related to the Whitlock article about Arenas and the NBA I think), good stuff.

I’m right with you. The local coverage is embarrassing.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
At first I was hoping that they’d cover the caps a little more…Now that some of the sports people do talk about the caps it’s even worse. They don’t know hockey. Csaban does ok, but it’s like watching a first time skater listening to them talk about it. The worst is Holden Kushner, he tries to get the caps in, but then he says things like: “Schultz is coming back in so they’ll get some of that hard hitting defense back.” And: “Milan Jur-s-eye-na…Jur-see-nay…I donno, I was never really good with French pronunciations”. But he’s scaled it back to saying, wow, look at their record, they’ve won a lot of games.
I once heard Kushner say “Of all the radio shows, we spend the most time on the Caps. I’m not really sure if that’s a good thing, because its not like we actually know anything. But we love ’em!” It’s always a little strange listening to his show.

Mike Wise is a joke, and so is the Post’s sports section. Good riddance to bad rubish.
As you said, Godspeed Tarik.
Wise has terrible delivery on his jokes too. On Washington Post Live, he sounds like an Andy Rooney rip off. If wants to be in stand-up, the DC Improv isn’t too far away. Take it over there.

I don’t know… the DC Improv is actually a respected club. I’d like to see him try his stuff out at Solly’s, get drowned out by the crowd of drunk hipsters, and after he gets offstage, I’d tell him he sucked, but to quit his day job because he sucks at that, too.

“With all due respect…” That’s just Mike Wise. A guy that likes to hear himself talk. A post editor threw that line back at him later in the chat. So maybe the Post as a whole will come around.
Are you new in town?
I keed. The problem I see is that the “name” writers on the post, Wilbon/Wise/Boswell, don’t know what a blue line is let alone what an umbrella PP looks like. As long as those guys are the ones that get the majority of the face time for the Post Sports section we will be unable to get anything but snark and cursory analysis.
As much as I love what J.P. et al. do here, I’d love to have a major news outlet that didn’t actively put down the best team in the area simply because they don’t get/like the sport.
Me too. Living in the Philly area for a several years, I got use to sports radio guys and newspaper columnist that knew hockey and didn’t bump it to “fringe sport” status like they do down here. I was really hopeful when WJFK switched to sports talk, thinking maybe they’ll talk about something else since they weren’t owned by the ’Skins. But based on their content they may as well be.
I hate Philly, but I’d sooner listen to WIP than any sports talk show down here. Those guys know and love their teams (and their sports), which is a combination you don’t find all the time down here.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I live in a town that has had an NHL team 20+ less years than DC and they still get more respect from the sports media (minus the crappy newspaper in town which does make the Post look good). This also in a town where the football, basketball, and baseball franchises are all better than those in DC as well. Even the folks who don’t know hockey well at least try to understand it and certainly don’t denigrate those who love the sport.
A man gotta have a code
It’s sad. Wilbon might actually know something about hockey (I think he claims Blackhawks knowledge from his youth), but doesn’t want to be bothered until playoff time. Boz actually tries, and at least doesn’t put it down, while admitting he’ll probably never really know the sport. Wise really is pretty much a features guy now, and should just shut up instead of making jokes (the Brashear story last spring was fabulous, but I’m a little worried about what he might be working on, since he said he’s got a story lined up for next week).
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The WP columnists don’t have a hockey chair. They have The Basebal Guy (Boswell), the Basketball Guys (Wilbon, Wise), the College Basketball Guy (Feinstein), The Outdoors Guy (Phillips), The Conscience Columnist (Jenkins), The Racing Guy (Beyer), the Football Guy (Wilbon, Boswell, some Jenkins, some Wise).
Tarik does the beat stuff and they have others to help on the CI blog, but there is no “Hockey Guy” columnist.

I am kind of hoping Gene Wang steps up to the hockey plate more now that football is over. I think he’s pretty good—his fantasy chats can be pretty sharp and funny. He knows a bit about pucks and I think his writing is solid.

The problem with that (to paraphrase something Steinz said last year) is that slowly but surely they’ll put more coverage over to the Caps/Wiz beats now that the Redskins press orgy is done. Gene’s part of that group, presumably, but don’t expect much more than the beat writer from October-January next year.

Wilbon knows a good deal about hockey. Do you remember him ranting about how he’s sick of hearing anyone suggest that Crosby’s better than Ovechkin on PTI? That’s a guy who’s got the right idea, even if he doesn’t know who the league points leader is.

I’ll admit that when I first saw the commericial I thought it was good for the NHL…even better if they’d show it on a non-hockey channel. But now the only part of the commericial that I “love” is the part when it’s over.
I’m with Peerless…it haunts my dreams.
Oh, the music’s horrible. But I enjoy some of the guys they use in the ad.
And yes, that sound you hear is the soft sound of more of my street cred slipping away.
Nothing against the ad stylistically or whatever…its like an NFL United Way ad, which is fine.
My problem with the ad is the fact that they show it at least twice every commercial break, so its on at least 8-10 times an hour, if not more. I think i’d rather be waterboarded at this point than hear it again.

Tony Cornheiser
Although it is a nationally syndicated broadcast, i still for some reason come home and watch PTI with hopes of the Caps getting at least a bit of coverage…and am usually let down. I say this as for (1) They are BOTH staffers at the WaPo and (2) The only team thats worth getting behind seems to be pushed aside by the latest news of how Derek Jeter just put a ring on Mika Kelly…..And on a sidenote i really wish that Cornheiser would stop waving his Canadian flag about at the end of each broadcast…no wonder there is no extended version of PTI in Canada as Cornheiser repeatedly treats hockey as if it were a sideshow to the “real” american sports….as seen here as he seriously compares Ovechkin to Urlacher and Tebow, as if these are the only two players that he could compare him to….no hockey player comparable? Wilbon does however make good points.

The sad thing is that it’s not that hard to get the sport…just sit down and watch it. Find a guy that knows the sport and let him walk you through it. This site had been a godsend for people like me who didn’t really know the sport but loved to watch it.
While far from an expert, I can pick things up that they’re trying.
The other sad thing is that it’s not like any of these writers had a career playing the sports, some played them when they were little, and that’s the excuse they fall back on. I never played a lick of football and I know as much about it as most of the writers just by paying attention. They could do the same with hockey.
It’s funny. For the longest time I had trouble with some of the rules, and for the life of me couldn’t detect an offside. It both helped and hurt that I was relying on my soccer knowledge in watching the games (at least I had something I could relate my questions to). Then one day, the little light bulb went on and I couldn’t understand how I’d ever missed the offside previously.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
At least Boz can capture the essence of the Caps, even if it’s not his sport. That’s because he actually has writing talent. Wilbs writes like he talks, which is fine, but it’s not art. And he doesn’t like pucks, so when he must vomit out something about hockey it’s with a tone of disdain that he can’t shake from his writing.

So maybe the Post as a whole will come around.
ever so slightly. From Steintz chat:
Mike Wise likes to make off-handed quips that would be better left unquipped. I wouldn’t take it too seriously. He certainly wasn’t speaking for Post hierarchy. Editors are sending me (I know, bad choice) on the road with Tarik to the Pens game next week. We haven’t had a second writer travel with the Wizards to a regular season game this season. I think that shows the priorities well enough.
as amusing as Steinz is, I’d prefer Svrgula as the second writer.

I wasn’t taking offense at all. Damn internet. Be bitchy, it’s okay with me.
Apparently, he’s planning to spend “the rest of the hour after he finishes with a Redskin”. That’s going to translate to about fifteen minutes is my guess. Maybe. I wish I could be bothered to call in.

Just a little heads up...
Pretty good chart on the Empty Netters blog that shows how good Ovechkin, Crosby, and Sedin have been at even strength this year:
http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/emptynetters/default.aspx
I can’t believe Ovechkin scored 41% of his points on the PP last year, and is only at 29% this year. Just think if Ovechkin (likely) and Crosby (unlikely) start to get more PP points….they’ll have a nice battle for the scoring title.
I’d say it’s more likely Crosby starts getting more PP points simply because that PP is currently a mess and has nowhere to go but up. The Caps’ PP isn’t going to get much better in all likelihood.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Swingman
Was it here that Sloan was first referred to as a swingman? I’ve never heard it before in reference to a hockey player, but I did notice that a post on CI referred to Sloan as a swingman and was wondering if that was a Japers’ism that made it into the wild
I believe this Ups and Downs was the first reference on this site. I don’t know if it was used elsewhere first though.

From Wikipedia
Swingman is a basketball term denoting a player who can play both the small forward (3) and shooting guard (2) positions, and, in essence, swing between the shooting guard and small forward positions.
Also, this. A few bad examples as they are defensemen who play defense on the PP but you get the idea. Better ones would’ve been Byfluglien, Carkner, Sloan…
The term “swingman” is also used in baseball, defining a pitcher who moves between the bullpen and starting rotation multiple times during the season. It is also occasionally used in ice hockey to define atypical defenders, such as Mark Streit, Christoph Schubert, Matt Gilroy, and Sergei Federov, able to play both forward and defense. These players often play defense on the powerplay because their forward-quality shooting skills offer a threat from the point.

It was between Cyclops (because of Ovi’s traditionally dark visor) or Colossus (who is from the former Soviet Union), but Colossus would have been a bit above my photoshopping ability, since his body is all metal. I tried to find a better (big) picture of Ovi’s head with a darker visor, but I didn’t have any luck, so that’s what I ended up with. Hope you guys like them!

I think the price is going to be determined by the buyers, not the seller. If Anaheim needs to move him, they will, and the highest bid will get him.
Just wondering, but who do you see as the other big buyers? For as much as you read about the Caps having absolutely no defenders worth a damn (ugh), you’d think everyone else in the league is elite at all six spots.
Fight For Old D.C. Admin

I haven’t given it a ton of thought, but glancing over the capgeek.com numbers I’d think New Jersey could be the Capitals biggest threat if they wanted to make a move for Niedermayer. I think L.A. and Colorado might be interested, but I don’t think they’d want to give up all that much, so, realistically, I think they get outbid.
LAK has more prospects they can part with. NJD does have the cap space but the trade would hurt their farm in a big way.
In any event, ANA said they aren’t trading Nieds. Of course, they may not mean it but they say they have a standing agreement not to trade him unless he asks for it.
Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.
Very true. I should have been more clear. They were asking a ton for a guy who was on the downside of his career. I expect the same with Nieds. Obviously, they’ll get less than they did for Pronger, but I still expect the price to be steep.

Just watched that Canuck’s TV spot and, while the Ovi stuff at front was nice, the game shots they posted later in the video – wow, they were fantastic. Wonder if that was TSN or a local station. Seeing all those great game shots, knowing that we’re going to be subjected to CSN- for tonight’s game, makes me sad.
The money quote in Darren Eliot’s column is buried far beneath the headline…
Collectively, they continued to work the walls and make smart, small-area hockey plays.
This is precisely what they did NOT do against the Penguins in last year’s playoff series and was the difference in the series. The Penguins bought into paying a price from Crosby to the fourth line, won battles for pucks, ended up with possession more often than not, and pounded shots at Varlamov. The Caps seem to be better equipped to play that sort of a game this year. But then they’d better be, because if they’re not, there won’t be any parades this year, either.
If you've read this far...seek help.

I believe TEB’s comment is a reference to how Poti is being used by Boudreau. And certainly up to the last week, I think it was accurate. But Schultzie’s gotten a lot of very tough minutes the last few games. We may be seeing a changing of the guard. We can probably expect an article in April (about a month after it’s apparent to everyone) about how Schultz is being given new responsibility and is embracing his new role.

If what Burrows says is true – and frankly, I’m very inclined to believe him – isn’t the only clear message you can send firing Auger? The NHL needs to come down very hard on this to send a clear message, especially if this type of thing is more common than people realize.
