Which pads do you want Varly to wear this season?
It looks like Semyon Varlamov is in the trial mood of late to test how different goal pads will suit him this year having three sets (two actually worn) spotted so far. For goalies like myself, the right fit makes the difference. But aesthetics and originality count, and fans would agree.
Which will he wear and which do you want him to wear?
Above, you have JP's photo from the first day of camp of last year's NikeBauer Supreme One95 leg pads and what appears to be either new One100 or Vapor blocker and glove, along with a Warrior stick.
Here you have an employee of The Goalie Crease posting new Bauer Supreme One100 gear that he has in someone's living room. Other photos can be found here, including one featuring Varlamov's embroidered name (which isn't that hard to ask the factory to do). Though in this Flickr shot I found, he's wearing the One100 blocker with the Supreme pads at training camp.
You'll find a lot of Bauer stuff this year sans Nike now that Bauer is in production with its independent owners. Mainly a wordmark change. Bauer also owns Itech, so some Itech goalies will now be Bauer goalies. Chris Osgood made this switch in the playoffs.
And above is a one-time used edition of his Vaughn Velocity pads thanks to last year's Upper Deck collection. (Apparently nobody took photos of Rookie Camp Day 2 except for the Post, which lacks direct links to images.) He later switched to a mix of Hershey and Caps colors opting for the chocolate with navy blue. This year's edition is virtually the same with the exception that the blue and red are flipped, according to the Post's Dan Steinberg's photo.
I like variety of goal equipment designs for the team's back-up and starter. Having Jose Theodore wearing (and presumably keeping) the Velocity line, I'd like to see Varly go with the new Bauer line just to give me something different to look at.
It looks like Varly is definitely trying out various pads and maybe he'll stay with Vaughn and go with old faithful, though some argue only his catcher needs replaced.
What would you like to stare at for 60 games this season?

The kind that keep the puck out of the net, bluntly. :)

Quite so—he should wear whatever works.

I’m excited to see him using the Warrior sticks. These were the Montreal Nitro sticks which are the best goal stick ever created. It might help him with his puck play too.
I like the Bauer pads and design more but I think he’ll probably stick with the Vaughns.
I wonder who the Bauer\Itech\Mission conglomerate will assimilate next.
Comment first, think second, read third.
He should rock Johnny Bowers’ pads:

The Bauer pads were indeed his pads…see the embroidered name on the blocker:

It must be nice to try out thousands of dollars worth of new gear every day…
On that card, it looks like the blue arrows are pointing to that which chubby American girls shall not touch.

I believe it’s a subtle hint: “shoot puck here.”
That’s how badass he is.

I think that they stop the puck is um, understood ;) But aesthetically, I’d like to see the the design on his blocker where he’s standing beside Irbe transfered onto the pads. It has a wing effect that makes sense with the Weagle and would suit well one day for a third jersey.
I’m just not that thrilled in recent years with the goal pad designs. A couple might have something different from a template on a Vaughn pad like Carey Price and Cam Ward and Turco might go for the gold, but I miss the days when Kolzig would have varying designs of a bronze star or stars on his pad, Brodeur’s pads looked like flames, Dafoe had some nice Hollywood stars sewed on and Sean Burke had a big whale flukes.
One day in college my roommate and I had about an hour to kill at the local mall. So we walked into a fancy pen store — the kind where Mont Blanc and Waterford are the “starter” brands. My roommate proceeded to talk intelligently (I hope) with the proprietor for twenty-five minutes about every detail about the pens. I’d make up a bullshit version of the conversation, but to tell you the truth I didn’t understand anything they said. At one point they may have been talking about the optimal viscosity of the ink for a particular pen, but I may have misunderstood.
It was on that day that I realized that there are entire complex worlds that have been created for seemingly simple things. “Goaltender Gear World” is another good one. I love reading this stuff whenever I encounter it, even if I don’t understand a single word that y’all say.

#1. Number two looks like a recoloration of Lundqvist’s, and #3 is too much “look at mah junk”, and with Theo, among other goaltenders wearing those pads, and my not seeing Nabakov as mucha s others, I associate those pads with soft goals.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
