- Good stuff on Arturs Irbe and Semyon Varlamov. [Sporting News]
- Varly's definitely one to watch for in 2009-10. [CP]

- You'd be hard-pressed to rock any more red than this guy (and have we confirmed that Anton Gustafsson did indeed report to Hershey - we've seen him in a similar get-up). [D.C. Sports Bog]
- Indeed we do have that confirmation, via a first-hand account of yesterday's Bears practice. [Hershey Bears Hockey]
- With the Redskins circling the bowl already (again), the Caps provide some positive sports vibe for the city (but not enough). [Washington Times]

Kind of a misleading comment about the “Top 200” list. It’s not really a list of (who he feels are) the best players in the league, but just how he thinks the scoring race will look at the end of the year.
Fair point. I tidied it up a bit to more accurately reflect that.

I can say that the best halftime show EVAR was a Wizards game when the Wiz mascot was celebrating his 5th “birthday” and invited all his furry friends. It was kind of cool to see the Oriole and the Philly Phanatic and Slapshot and some others all in the same place; it was even better when they staged a wrestling match and were whacking each other in their furry noggins with folding chairs.

Love this quote from Pothier!
“I think everybody has a gift, right?” he said. “I can’t do what [teammate] John Erskine can do, and I never will be able to. I can lift weights and make snarls and be as mean as I can, and I’m just not going to be able to do that.”
With his glasses on, I think he looks like an English teacher, and now I have this vision of a mild-mannered English prof snarling because his students failed to read the assignment.
I like this one as well:
“As younger players, we always want to make the spectacular play – the curl-and-drag and the crazy cross-ice pass to [Alex] Ovechkin. When I get back there, I know what my options are – wing, center, far wing, [defense] partner – and I just hit the first guy I see open.
A perfect antidote for the fancy-pants play that seemed to be a pitfall last year. Hopefully some other guys take his example and apply it to their own game.

From the Sportsnet Article
Will the Capitals miss Sergei Fedorov?
Absolutely! There’s no question the 18-year veteran slowed down over the years, but his effect is not only felt on the ice, but off the ice, too. He is a leader, a solid defensive citizen and can fill in on defence when necessary. All good things come to an end and obviously Federov wasn’t going to play forever. It will be interesting, though, to see who steps up to replace his lost leadership.
Perhaps newcomer Mike Knuble?
Disagree with this. Feds was a nice story, but his leadership value was overstated, and his skillset is/was not irreplaceable. Brendan Morrison (if healthy, knock on wood) brings more production to the table, largely due to having fresher legs.
Feds might be missed on a personal level, but I like the composition of the team better with him gone and BMo in his place.
I do agree that Mike Knuble brings a new and sorely needed ingredient to the feast, though.
by fat_daddyo on Sep 25, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
See, I think they will. He was a great two-way player, played reliable defense when it was asked of him, and according to most all of the metrics we chewed over during the summer, had some fantastic “unseen production”.
I’m pretty sure Morrison will be an upgrade from a purely offensive standpoint, but I’m not sold that it’s more than a push overall yet, in the same way that I’m absolutely sure that Knuble is an upgrade over Kozlov and just about anyone from Hershey is an upgrade over Brashear.

Semin was fine. One bad penalty, one brilliant goal, and a few other very nice plays. Backstrom was fine, if a little anonymous. He had some moments. And Green’s tracking radar for the goal corners isn’t there yet, but otherwise, he was OK. Ovi was the only one of the four I really had a problem with.
Backstrom, Semin and Green all get credit for solid PK work as well. Easy to forget that they do that.

I agree, the Caps will miss Feds, particularly in postseason play. You can’t underestimate the amount of deference other players gave to his good coaching and advice, particularly the Russians. I don’t think that’s insurmountable by any means, and BMo may well have more left in the tank from a production standpoint. I also agree the Knuble will help in multiple ways. But the Caps will miss those intangible elements that Fedorov had in spades.
Interesting to note that according to the Fox Sports poll the Caps are the favorite to win the East.
There’s a fox/beagle joke here, but I’m just not piecing it together. Must be a Friday thing.

The way I see it, on paper there are four teams with a decent shot of coming out of the east this year – Boston, Philly, Pittsburgh, and Washington. Philly is going to depend on their netminding, Boston’s going to find out whether they miss Kessel or not, Pittsburgh gets to find out whether Alex Goligoski and (name?) can replace Gill and Scuderi, and the Caps get to find out whether a Varly / Theodore tandem can go the distance and whether the D can straighten up.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
BOS lost Ward and Kessel. A top 4 D and their best W. I don’t see how they haven’t taken a real step back. And Tim Thomas is Jim Carey’s long lost crazy uncle.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Boston also got Derek Morris though, so the Ward subtraction is a wash.
The biggest problem for them I think is that they had everything go right for them last year with a lot of young guys breaking out, Savard turning into a two way player, and Tim Thomas standing on his head. Is it all going to go that well this year? Are the young guys going to take the next step or was their slow down at the end of last season a sign that they still have a ways to go in their maturity and consistency. I think Boston is most prone to take a big step back in the standings out of the four favorites.

While I disagree on Morris and Ward being a wash (I’m not keen on Morris), I do agree that the team pretty much had the stars align in the regular season performance-wise, and there’s only one direction to go from first place. They’ll still likely win the Northeast, but I’d put them as a likely #3 seed in the postseason for it. I think your Atlantic winner (be it PIT or PHI) will probably be #2.
Winterion Game Studios
Visit us online at : http://winterion.com
I’m not very keen on Morris either, but I have a hard time seeing how Ward is really any better. I think Morris suffers from higher expectations because he has had a few better offensive years than Ward, but I don’t see much of a difference other than that. They are both solid #4 Dmen who bring some physicality to the blueline, particularly on a team like Boston where neither guy is going to be heavily depended on for offense or as a shutdown guy. If anything, Morris being 5 years younger and having more offensive upside makes it a lateral move for Boston.
I agree they will win the Northeast, but that’s because it is a very mediocre division. I don’t see them coming close to 116 points again though.

As long is Chris really is day-to-day, he could still make the team as the “healthy” scratch sitting beside Nylander while Laing gets the fourth-line slot and Aucoin the third-line slot. This scenario gives the team 14 rostered skaters, provided both Fehr and Flash are on injured reserve. This does not permit for 8 defenders, though, so something would have to give in the Juice/Erskine/Sloan/ShaMo debate.

We are maintaining an even keel, realizing that this is the best thing for his long term development. Though, if BMo is still out for the last pre-season game we think that MP is a better fit to get a jersey than Sugden.

And Aucoin beats both of them. Probably Bourque as well (with Laich as the 2C).
I see MP as a call-up once things are rolling. I wouldn’t start him on the roster even if B-Mo were out. I want the really young players starting camp with the team they’ll play most of the year with.

You know I don’t disagree with you about where MP should play, but I will say that MP playing a pre-season game tells us more about him as a player than Aucoin playing does. MP could get in the final pre-season game for more experience but I’d still give Aucoin the nod to start the season here.

Finally, hockey has a great debate. Well, this being hockey, maybe it’s more like a bar fight. Either way, Tim Hortons and ice rinks and peewee locker rooms will be buzzing over this argument for years: Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin? Captain Cool or Captain Morgan? The guy you marry or the guy you date?
But before we explore deeper, let’s get a few things straight: 1) This isn’t a question of who’s the better player—both have won Hart and Art Ross trophies, and both are still a few years shy of their prime; 2) this is not a media creation—there is a real rivalry. “How can there not be?” says Crosby. “We’re different. He sticks out. I like to blend in.” Ovechkin agrees: “It’s good for the media, good for the game. I like it.”
It’s hard to imagine that two players so equally blessed with an abundance of skills could be so different in putting those skills on display. Crosby often seems to disappear on the ice, only to resurface at the penultimate moment with a brilliant pass or a crafty goal. Ovechkin sucks all the air out of the arena, drawing attention to himself even when he’s roving the neutral zone.
Hockey has always been too team-oriented, too unselfish to ignite the type of blogosphere drama that has elevated other sports. But almost every fan give a, ahem, shift about Sid and Ovie. The contrast in their styles, on and off the ice, is so complete that even casual puckheads take sides. And because of strange yet perfect circumstances that overrode hockey’s team-first culture, not to mention the NHL’s eager anointing of Crosby as the Next One, what was once a civil competition between young stars has risen to a boil.
Once upon a time this was a team rivalry, with the Capitals and the Penguins regularly clashing in the playoffs. In this decade, as the league spiraled toward a lockout, both clubs fell on hard times. Washington got the No. 1 pick in 2004 and took the speedy Moscovite Alexander Ovechkin. But already the hype was centered on the 16-year-old from Maritimes who was destined to save the sport. In July 2005, the Pens used the No. 1 pick to snare Sidney Crosby. Because of the work stoppage, the players debuted on the same night: Oct. 5, 2005. Ovechkin scored his first NHL goal less than half an hour into his first game, then scored another to lead the Caps to an opening night win. The response from the NHL? An audio file announcing Sidney Crosby’s first pro point—a power play assist—in a lopside Pens loss. Um, hello? Why did a routine assist get a press release for a No. 1 pick while two goals earned nothing for another No. 1? After the Caps complained, the NHL sent out a release on Ovechkin. But by then the league had tipped its hand. Ovechkin scored six more goals and five assists in October. But Rookie of the Month went to No. 87, who scored two goals to go with 12 assists. Speaking later at the National Press Club in Washington, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the decision to honor Crosby was handled by the league’s PR crew. That was all Caps fans needed to hear.
Adelson’s contact seems to have been the main Caps media rep, Nate Ewell. Plenty of quotes from Nate throughout.

I just came from a meeting where I started to read this in the lobby. Unfortunately, my contact didn’t take long enough, I couldn’t finish reading. Sounds like it might be worth dropping 5.99 to the WWL. Just this once.
yeah, I’ve got that feeling, too. But I walked down to Borders, and they still have last weeks issue with Tim Tebow on the stand. Disappointed.
I really have this intense distaste of Tebow. I don’t know if its the holier-than-thou thing, the excessive orgasmic coverage of him, or that fact that he plays for a dirty cheating dick like Urban Meyer.
meyer cheated when? it’s okay, you can hate him because he’s awesome. it happens to ovechkin, too.

Meyer is a notorious rule bender when it comes to recruiting and such. Although “rule bender” is putting it politely.
On October 2008, coach Urban Meyer and head University of Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan were named co-chairmen of an effort to raise $50 million to support the Florida Opportunity Scholars Program. This scholarship was designed for first-generation students that have unique needs and financial challenges. The Florida Opportunity Scholars Program was created by President Bernie Machen in 2006, and is intended to increase the opportunities for academically prepared first-generation students.
In December of 2008 Urban Meyer and Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham were the first people to donate money to the Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin Family Scholarship, an endowed scholarship which will benefit the Utah football program.
Tebow spent the last three summers before enrolling at the University of Florida in the Philippines, assisting with his father’s orphanage and missionary work.
Bastards!
excessive orgasmic coverage of him
Huh? All I ever hear about is how Tebow’s overrated, a system quarterback, and will never thrive in the NFL.
plus apparently matt leinart is the college football “athlete of the decade.”.

But this reminds me of the Crosby Pic

you probably won’t learn anything from that article, but it was nice to see a national take on media coverage of the two players.

a somewhat fresh take on sid vs. AO, believe it or not. at least the first half of the article. details pretty well the AO snubs that have come down from the league office since his rookie season (ala "rookie of the month" honors, league press releases, etc.).

wait is this an endorsement of M&M? a more staged and corporate talk radio show does not exist. how can two people speak for that long without saying anything remotely insightful?

at least they’re not Colin Cowheard. I’ve threatened to drive right into oncoming traffic if people live the station on that idiot.
That’s his shtick, just trying to be as outrageous as possible so people will listen to see what he has to say next or to get upset about it. He’s the Glen Beck of sports.
Viewed from the prism of entertainment alone, I find it a very good radio program.
I wouldn’t call anything in print, radio, or television superior to the sports coverage one finds online… like here!

too staged for me. when they’re arguing about topics they’ve been told to argue about, it comes off as forced. and i don’t find humor in the characters they play (tough guy, metro guy). the sports reporters, IMO, just way more natural.

See, I die a little inside listening to them.. then again, the 24-7 wall to wall Redskins coverage that will consume talk radio here in the DC area from now until the Pro Bowl is over is largely to blame for that, and they’re not exclusive to that club.
