Yes, that would be right based on what I sawa last night. Sollars to donuts they want Sugden against the Rangers.

They’re not far from a goon squad, yes – it’s generally the NYR style anyway.

Tonight’s expected Ranger lineup:

Higgins – Prospal – Gaborik
Lisin – Dubinsky – Callahan
Grachev – Drury – Kotalik
Brashear – Anisimov – Voros

Semenov – Gilroy
Redden – Rozsival
Del Zotto – Girardi

I maintain that Chris Drury’s constant omission from the first line borders on irrational behavior.

by Rob Parker on Sep 24, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Ehh, the closest thing the Rangers had to a Nylander situation was highly overplayed players who played mediocre hockey. I can’t recall an overpaid benchwarmer in some time.

Redden is massively overpaid. Gomez was, but they somehow unloaded him to the Habs. Avery, admittedly, makes a lot more than you’d think a guy like that should. Rozsival and Green have the same salary this year.

Well, that certainly would seem to be the most logical inferrence (and the same one I’ve made a couple of times). But it’s also possible that he doesn’t dress tonight and Bruce wanted to keep him on hand for Sunday just in case something unkosher goes down tonight.

On Rangers getting Crosby. Peerless Prognosticator ran a series on what would have happened if the Caps hadn’t won the Ovi Lottery. They had the Pens ending up with Ovi and Malkin ending up on the Black Hawks. The following year, Crosby was drafted by the Rags.

Yes, I can think of one thing worse than Crosby on the Pens and that is, Crosby on the Rangers. Can you just imaging the hype and how obnoxious the New York writers would be. (This is coming from me, a die hard Penguin hater. But I can’t stand any of the NY teams either, in any sport.)

So, the battle at this point shapes up to be:

7 veteran defenders on the roster at the moment. The race to dethrone one or carry eight is between Alzner, Sloan, and Collins. The former and latter seem unlikely to stay with the big club at this point – it now looks like Sloan is either playing for Erskine’s job or trying to convince the team to carry 8, with the second of those options unlikely given the injury situation up front.

Educated guess – The team decides to carry seven. Alzner and Collins are reassigned to Hershey, and one of the roster defenders.. likely Erskine, is released.

10 veteran forwards on the roster at the moment, with an additional 2 to likely hit IR and one chained to the team suite in VC. Beagle, Bourque, Giroux, Aucoin, and Laing are fighting for 2 starting positions and one backup, assuming the team decides to carry 14 forwards. Should they only carry 13, the backup position is not available. Of these, Laing is currently shining brightest and, pending the results of the home-and-home with the Rangers, seems well slotted to take the checking line position. The remaining four are likely fighting for the third line position alongside Steckel and Clark. Giroux has failed to impress, and Bourque is unofficially day-to-day recovering from his hit, so all eyes should be on Beagle and Aucoin as the two likely scrapping for the role.

Educated guess – The team decides to carry 14 forwards. Aucoin sticks around until Fehr is ready to return. Laing remains on the checking line for a while. Bourque starts as a healthy scratch, but is brought in for a half-dozen games or so before Flash is back as well. Beagle and Giroux are the odd-men-out for now.

3 goalies vying for two spots. Not much here story-wise.

Educated guess – Varlamov hasn’t played himself out of the position, so he’ll share starts with Theodore. Neuvy returns to Hershey and continues to dominate at that level, remaining there pending an injury with the NHL club or a freak trade opportunity regarding Theo. Either way, the two kids will be in Washington next season.

Erskine’s got a 2-year contract starting this year, can he be simply released?

by DrinkingPartner on Sep 24, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

no, the Caps would have to buy him out, and I’m much to lazy to page through the CBA right now and see if the window to do a buy-out for this season has passed.

by RedBirdie on Sep 24, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

They wouldn’t have signed him to an extension to buy him out. If anyone gets bought out it’s Juice because it’s a cheap one year deal. More likely is a trade for a bag of pucks or a 7th round pick.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Sep 24, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, there’s that, too.

Not that I’m advocating getting rid of Lumberjack in any way. Like i said, if I’m playing GM and determined to keep Sloan, Juice seems like the obvious one to try and trade.

by RedBirdie on Sep 24, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

My only beef with this is that Erskine is the closest thing the team’s got to an NHL tough guy, and he’s a pretty effective D-man, at least recently. I almost have to look at Milan Jurcina first.

I think they’d happily carry 8 D, but Nylander simply prevents that from being an option, and of the seven defenders they’ve got now, as much as I like Erskine myself, if I had to envision a scenario with GMGM simply parting ways with one of his seven, I think it’s Erskine. Yeah, Jurcina is a close second on that list, but I think they view Jurcina as possibly matching Erskine’s physicality (see the playoff performance) but also having slightly more offensive awareness.

I don’t know. This isn’t an easy decision, or we wouldn’t be agonizing over it. =)

Yeah, I think the only reason Erskine’s the 7th guy is because of his skillset, not because of him being the 7th best d-man. I’d take him above Juice and Mo, at this point, and I’m of the opinion Sloaner should make the team.

You see the team getting rid of Erskine? Even after the 2 year extension he signed last season? Erskine’s play improved dramatically the moment he signed that contract.

He’s cheap, hits hard, and has a hell of a lot of grit that this team is lacking as a whole.

I’m fairly out of the loop as to how a team ‘releases’ a player, but I’m pretty sure they can either buy them out, trade them, or send them down to Hershey hoping they’re picked up on waivers. It’s already too late to buy out for this season, which only leaves the other two options, neither of which I see happening myself.

I’m betting the top 7 stay as they are and maybe the team carries Sloan as the 8th.

All of this stuff is answered in the CBA.

Which was written by lawyers (no offense, JP) and reads like it. Some of it is self-explanatory, and some of it can make your head explode trying to figure out.

Ha. Least helpful answer ever. “Just go read a massive legal document, it’s all in there.”

No, he would. He’d have to pass through waivers going down and again coming back up.

Sloan has to clear waivers. However, Sloan should qualify as a minor league vet as defined in the CBA based on the number of games he has played in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL and the number of games he spent on the NHL roster last season, which means he is exempt from re-entry waivers.

Which is where, if a team is going to snag him, they’ll really want to.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

What amazes me ...

Last October when Sloan was called up, we were all like, “who?”

I don’t know about that – last August, Bruce said “You’ve got Alzner, Lepisto, Cutta, we like Tyler Sloan a lot. They are four guys under NHL contracts vying for a spot among the seven D.” [Emphasis mine] So he was definitely on the radar.

But I will note my own doubting of his prospects of being an NHLer from last August:

[Y]ou know who thinks the Caps have a handful of AHLers who might be ready for NHL duty? The guy who coached ‘em in the AHL (and who now, not coincidentally, wants to make sure everyone earns their spot on his NHL roster, regardless of where he was drafted or how many kudos he’s received)…. Will we see Tyler Sloan patrolling the blueline at the Verizon Center this winter? I have my doubts, but we shall see.

Kind of sad (I know it’s the smart play) that not a single Cap came to his defense…

You never know what could have happened if they had, though. My guess would have been a mis-given Instigating to a Cap.

That’s what I’m saying… they did the smart thing and I applaud them, but part of me wishes they had made the dumb one. He had just made a massive, legal hit in his first call up. BAMF. haha

But then the Caps wouldn’t have gotten that nine-minute PP they did so much with. Oh, wait…

Haha… touche. That was pitiful. I wish Clark had been there because I bet he would have stepped up. Remember when he was healthy and anytime someone would look sideways at AO he would go off… those were the days.

That still makes me mad. :P Refresh me, but aren’t major penalties “score at will” meaning that the penalty does not expire if the other team scores on the PP?

by gotsparkly on Sep 24, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct.

A player who receives a major penalty will remain off the ice for five minutes of play during which his team will be short-handed. A major penalty will not end if a goal is scored against the short-handed team.

Thought so. I maintain that had the Caps been able to score on that power play like they should, that game belongs to the Caps.

No, I know more because in my xbox version of the game I traded for Luongo and Neidermayer and Chara and then I went 77-2-3 only turning the game off because I was losing four times (they were all times the computer cheated so it was okay, though).

Come on, Milbury isn’t that stupid. You’d have to throw in Parrish and Kvasha along with Sloan in order to get Chara, Luongo and Special Nieds. Gotta make it even.

Speaking of which, my Be A Pro on PS3? First 8 Hershey games went to shootout, and we won all 8. It was crazy! I really need to learn how to score goals, they were almost all 0-0 or 1-1 games. XD

Took me 7 games to score a goal in Be a Pro (as a defenseman). Then that same season I won the Richard (admittedly this was on the second difficulty).

I gave up on NHL09 BAP. No matter how well I played, the teams (HER and WSH) would lose. I made it through a 25-50-8 season or something around there and half of the next one and quit. That mode was hard as shit. I was playing All-Star, but that shouldn’t have made that much difference, i wouldn’t have thought.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
