Updated Training Camp Roster
So after yesterday's cuts, this is our roster. If you subtract Fehr and Fleischmann from the 42 who are left then there are about 18 more who will be cut before October 1. Predictions about who is next to go? (Besides Bacashihua?)
[Ed. Note: updated 9/25 at 12:25 PM to reflect these cuts and these and these.]

I’ll take a swing at it. 18 names from that list have to go?
Aucoin, A.Gordon, Beagle, Bouchard, Joudrey, Laing, Osala, Perrault, Sugden, Wilson, Pinizzotto, Carlson, Alzner, Collins, McNeill, Sloan, Bacashihua, Neuvirth.

I wanna see these names play another game before I try to take a swing:
Aucoin, Laing, Perreault, Sloan, Alzner.
Sloan may not make it through waivers. He’s steady, can skate, can PK, puts up 2-3 pairing NHL numbers, is cheap, and is capable of laying someone out if the situation warrants it.

Fehr and Flash continue to count against the 23 while injured?

Yes, unless they go on IR (which is, of course, possible/likely).

Any chance of putting Nylander on IR with a torn relationship to free up the roster spot? Otherwise, two starters out (Fehr/Flash) and a healthy scratch (Nyls) means 12-6-2.
Generously assuming Bourque gets Brashear’s old job on the fourth line, this still implies no room for Sloan and/or Erskine to start out, and even with both Fehr and Flash on IR, isn’t that just delaying the complication to whenever they’re healthy enough to return to the lineup?
23 is harsh.. seems like there’s zero room for error on an NHL roster.

What is Sugden still doing here (I’d ask the same about Joudrey but that got answered in the Caps Clips)? I’d say Sugden, Joudrey, and McNeil are the next to go down. Probably Bouchard as well considering it doesn’t look like he has impressed BB.
A man must have a code.
I was wondering that as well and then I thought
maybe guys like Sugar and Pinner are around in case any shenanigans erupts and BB says “Get ’em, boys” in so many words.
They are cannon fodder for the likes of Weber, who if he’s playing for BUF tonight (?) boarded B-Mo last Friday.

Cash, too, since they’ll need G’s in HER.

Right, but Cash was mentioned right up top so I figured everyone knew he was a given.

IMO, you can knock off an easy 9 from the list – Bouchard, A.Gordon, Joudrey, Osala, Sugden, Wilson, Pinizetto, McNeill, Bacashihua – and I wouldn’t be surprised if the caps do so after the game tonight.
That leaves Aucoin, Beagle, Bourque, Giroux, Laing, Perreault, Collins, Alzner, Sloan, Neuvirth. I doubt Beagle, Perrault, Collins or Neuvirth make the roster but I included them on the list for personal preference (Beagle) and an impressive camp vs. incumbent (Neuvirth). With that said, if the caps put Flash and Fehr on the IR, that opens up 2 more roster spots for the remaining 5 guys (per my list).
I’ll do it the opposite way — predicting who stays instead of who goes. I predict the most conservative path, involving the least risk of losing assets outright:
- Both Fehr and Flash on the IR.
- Bourque makes the 4th line
- Laing is the 13th forward
- Nylander sits in a skybox
- No deals are made on D and the incumbents play well enough to hold their spots (for now)

Collins and Sloan are a risk, but not a huge one. Otherwise, this maximizes the odds of being able to make a trade and of not losing anyone.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
If Giroux can give us anything I could live with that until the other guys get healthy. Fitting them back under the cap will be tough. Unless I’m mistaken, this assumes both will be on LTIR, correct?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Quick rules question:
Hypothetical — Karl Alzner outplays Shaone Morrisonn in the remaining preseason games and wins a spot on the roster at ShaMo’s expense. ShaMo is sent down to Hershey and passes through waivers successfully. A week later, GMGM orchestrates a trade of ShaMo to another team for a draft pick.
Question: ShaMo can jump right onto the NHL roster of the acquiring team, without passing back up through reentry waivers, right?
Atta dinnin stick a who!
IIRC there is a waiver exemption period for a couple weeks after a trade. I believe that’s how we got Kronwall to HER last season.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
You can send anyone you want TO Hershey without fear of losing them. Bringing them back up is where you can lose them.
Comment first, think second, read third.
No, guys have to pass waivers going down and up. Anytime you want to switch leagues with a guy that isn’t waiver-exempt you can lose them. After a trade and after an injury rehab there are safe-harbor periods and that is how Kronwall got down to Hershey.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
is that how Laing got back to Hershey after the spleen injury? (not that I think that many teams are interested in risking a guy with a spleen injury)
Six more cuts made.

If you put a gun to my head and made me guess, I’d say Sugden’s getting a look as a call-up enforcer. GMGM has made comments that there’s maybe five-ten games a year where they might want an enforcer on the team. He hasn’t gotten into a game yet, and I’m hoping he’ll be on the roster tonight for a look; if not, the Rangers might be the team he gets that look against.
He’s not signed by the Caps, only by Hershey, but that hasn’t stopped GMGM from signing a guy and calling him up before. They’re at 49 of 50 contracts, but if there’s a trade that will move bodies in the offing, it could work.
One question, though – if we lose a guy to waivers, does that contract count against the 50-contract limit?
