Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Ranking the Capitals: #31

In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals, from Ovechkin to, well, we'll see (only players under contract will be considered). The criteria is simple: who at this moment is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players - because of what he brings on the ice or off it, his upside, what he could fetch in trade, and so on - who would it be? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll. [Note: previous "Ranking the Capitals" posts can be found here."]

Bouchard…….I’ve based most of my votes on trade value…..think he’s the only one with much.

never let the truth get in the way of a good story

Nylander for 3 reasons

A) that he may have a good season left in him
2) that he goes to greener pastures and saves us money
III) we may get a bag of pucks back in a trade. New pucks.

If we don’t vote him on the roster he’s not on the roster. If he’s not on the roster we don’t have to dump his salary. Just don’t vote for him if you don’t like his salary.

As for play, you might get a good season out of it but you could certainly sign Robert Lang for less than Nyls and get at least the same production.

Bouchard because he has higher trade value and top 6 upside. His brother is an established NHLer so I hope that at some point he can wake him up and get him to take that next step; or in the alternative some other GM is intrigued by the bloodlines and pedigree and offers something good for him.

Tyler Sloan has demonstrated he can game at the NHL level, and I see a little Tom Poti in him.

I’m a little over George’s predilection for bloodline picks these days.

Yeah, but Finley may be as high as Sloan in the organization’s eyes, which is saying something about one (or both) of them.

I guess I would be higher on Finley if he showed the versatility to transition to wing (effectively).

I’m b/t Bouchard and Sloan, the former for potential and the latter for his ability to plug a hole admirably (though he’s even further down the depth chart this year than last). Leaning Bouche.

I was thinking the same thing. Sloan and Collins both showed the importance of having AHL players that can play 5-10 NHL games at a time (and won’t get poached on waivers) but with Alzner almost locked for a team and the rise of Carlson I don’t think they are the first guys to be called up anymore. Then again, if GMGM moves out one or two of the established NHL D in training camp they move right back up the depth chart.

that’s an interesting take—and we’ve (mostly) been calling for at least one of our 8 NHL types to get dealt….

I could go Aucoin here in this spot for similar C depth issues.

I’m not ready to give up on Finley yet. If Sloan left tomorrow I wouldn’t care but if Finley doesn’t pan out I’d be bummed.

by MikeL-Pivonka on Sep 3, 2009 9:23 AM EDT reply actions

I’ll do Sloan this time for the same reasons I did Aucoin last time. Those two plus Jay Beagle have already demonstrated the ability to play competently at the NHL level without embarrassing themselves or the organization. That’s very nice insurance for the team to have. Nobody else on the list has proven that they’re very likely to be even NHL reserves.

And Sloan looks like Luke Skywalker.

You really think Beagle proved he can play competently at the NHL level? BB didn’t trust him with many, or important, minutes. I don’t think he proved much more than A. Gordon or Osala on their call ups.

I voted Giroux, for trade value. I can see teams wanting him now for secondary scoring, as opposed to a few years down the road. And he’s not a half bad fill-in for the 3rd line.

Why would a team give up an asset for him when they could have had him for nothing but a paycheck this summer?

Then they LTIR him and give away the store for Heatley.

Injuries could change things, but I just don’t see it happening.

Considering he’d make the league minimum I don’t think any team wanted him but couldn’t afford him. Injuries clearing cap space won’t change that.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 3, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously I completely agree with you, but injuries that create needs (not cap space) could, theoretically, put him in greater (albeit not great) demand. That’s the logic, I guess.

by J.P. on Sep 3, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. I feel like if some team is desperate for scoring on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th line they could trade for him for a mid-to-low round pick, instead of, for example, trading Lundqvist for Heatley.

by red army line on Sep 4, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think potential trades of Vezina-caliber goalies for super talented but petulant wingers and a career minor leaguer for a late pick are in the same ballpark, though.

It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where a team would want Giroux at some point this year enough to trade for him but not enough to go after him over the summer.

by David Getz on Sep 4, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t thinking straight up. I know Heatley’s on a long deal, don’t know about Lundqvist.

Point is, they don’t know if they will. And I feel like Bouchard hasn’t really done anything yet. Sure, he owned the Q, but what else? It’s been several dev camps now.

by red army line on Sep 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

How can you be giving up on Bouchard as a way of building up Giroux? If Bouchard has stalled for too long to finally be able to put it together then Giroux certainly has as well.

A man must have a code.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
