kinda excited about the Laing-Steckle-Bradley line…

by JustJeff on Sep 19, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

That line sounds like win in so many ways – but also impossible as long as B. Gordon and Laich are on the team.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

I love Laing and Bradley, but they had better be on your fourth line if you want to contend.

Uh yup. People are easily misled by a couple of strong memorable playoff games into thinking that Bradley is an NHL 3rd liner.

That’s why I said the line is impossible with Laich and Gordo on the team. You have to look at Gordon on line four with brad and laing, if laing makes it, and a third line of Stecks with Laich and Clark.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Sep 19, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Brads and Q are 4th line players, Steckel is going to be a 3rd line mainstay. Get your taste of this line now cuz it won’t be around long.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that assumption. I think if the Caps had another center who could fill third line minutes, Laing – Steckel – Brads would be a great fourth line, but Steckel at this point on this team has to play on the third line.

As far as entertainment value, this thing is likely to be a dud. Chicago dresses mostly big league talent, and the Caps definitely have their B-team going tonight.

On the plus side, Neuvirth should have plenty of chances to show his stuff. Haha.

The Caps don’t have the B team defense going. They’re sending most of their regular D-men except for Schultz and Pothier.

I think that’s because Extra Innings and Center Ice use the same channels. In fact, during a free extra innings trial that was during hockey season (probably last spring), there were NHL games on some of the channels.

It sounds bad, but I don’t know if I’m Burke I’m so quick. Kessel’s definitely a first line center, but I worry about him (as I do with Blake) because cancer is as finacky a thing as you can find. I’m more worried than most though, and I do hope the best for Kessel and Blake – I just hope the Bruins suck.

I think in college he played some C but I don’t think he has for BOS. He’s definitely a fine player, I’m just not sure I’d pay that price for him (salary or the picks).

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s a no-brainer of a trade for me. Kessel is both really young and established as a top-line player. Those guys just don’t come available very often, for one. For another, the odds of drafting a Kessel in the position that the Leafs are likely to draft – say, between 10 and 15, if not lower – is unlikely in a deep draft, and the next couple drafts are not shaping up to be all that deep.

That is the mother of all run-on sentences, by the way.

Back to Kessel: He’s trended the right way, he’s got his best years in front of him, and he does the single hardest and most valuable thing in hockey: he scores.

Love the trade for the Leafs.

by fat_daddyo on Sep 19, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I can say the Leafs would immediately become a better team, and potentially make a playoff run with him and maybe one more piece. Goaltending is still suspect (or really, Defense.)

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Sep 19, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, I think it’s a good trade for them. It’s a big draft pick bounty, and even late round picks can be gems (just ask Detroit re: Mike Green), but he’s a potentially elite player and the kind of scorer that team desperately needs.

It’s fun to rip on Burke, but the Leafs are going to be much, much tougher to play against this year. I’m not sure how many games will win, but everyone will cringe seeing them coming up on the schedule.

by grapejoos on Sep 19, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

There are plenty of examples of late first round picks that became (or are soon to be) productive players. I also think training and talent depth are getting better all the time so in the not-too-distant future the NHL first round is going to start to look like the NFL first round in the sense that it’s a huge fail for a franchise to not get a quality player with that pick.

The leafs will definitely be a tough team to play against this year.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, I hear first-round fail and Leaf in the same sentence, and my mind wanders to how much different the NFL would look today if the Bolts picked up Manning and the Colts picked up Ryan Leaf…

The cool thing about Burke

is that he doesn’t care about “playing it safe”; he’s not worried about being fired next year by making bold moves. He’s at the epicenter of North American hockey and the future is now. Very well played.

by S h a g g y on Sep 19, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a fan of the trade. I think the contract Kessel got was more than he should, and I think it makes no sense to trade away more than the compensation package you would have had to pay if you just signed him to an RFA offer sheet. If you’re afraid BOS matches then make the offer and make them match, then start talking trade. You’ve got the guy signed to the K you want, and you have BOS over a barrel needing to move assets fast. I guess the fear is that BOS keeps Kessel and moves other players to other teams, and TOR gets nothing; I just don’t think Kessel is that good that they should need to overpay that much for him (on both fronts). Two first and a second may not yield one player that is good as Kessel, but those 3 players could easily bring more to your team than Kessel will.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well after looking at the RFA compensation structure I see that @ 5.4 the Leafs would have owed two firsts, a second, and a third. So by saving BOS the trouble of having to dump salary they got to keep their third. I still think they overpaid for him but the trade package makes a lot more sense. Anyone have any thoughts on how this affects the market for Semin’s new K?

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

the moment I saw 5.4 I thought of Semin’s….basement price. 28 has Phil Kessel coming and going.

Totally with you. Great job getting that return for Kessel by Chiarelli. I also agree that Semin is a far superior player. He was going to make 5.4 anyway so I wasn’t that worried. Semin and Backstrom could both push for 6+ if they wanted to so it just comes down to how hard they want to push GMGM.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 19, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding why make the trade versus trying to convince Kessel to sign an offer sheet, I offered up this at From the Rink:

There’s always the threat of the Bruins tradings his rights elsewhere and that team matching, even if the Bruins can’t afford it.

So, for example, Kessel signs an offer sheet under which the Bruins will be entitled to first- second- and third-round picks. In the period the Bruins have to match (i.e. still have Kessel’s rights), David Poile calls up Peter Chiarelli and says, ‘Hey I hear Burke’s offering you first- second- and third-round picks for Kessel. We’ll give you that plus an additional third rounder".

Kessel’s rights then go to Nashville, who matches the offer sheet from Toronto and Burke misses out on his guy altogether.

by David Getz on Sep 19, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Good call. The overpayment issue is moot with him signing at 5.4. TOR traded away less than they were willing to give away on an RFA offer. Now my beef is that Kessel just isn’t worth 5.4.

Your point is well taken, though, and it’s the best answer I’ve gotten in response to that question.

Neuvirth is just awesome....

Man, is it possible for someone to take Theodore off our hands? Looks like we are set with Neuvirth and Varlamov. I’ve heard there are some who believe Neuvirth is really a better goalie than Varlamov — not sure about that, but he was lights out tonight. None of our ‘big guns’ tonight – none of the ‘young guns’, This was a Bears victory tonight — Wilson, Perreault and Neuvirth all shining as stars.

by Dougeb on Sep 19, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

I’m of the opinion Varlamov is the better goalie right now, but that Neuwirth will have the more successful career, just based on playstyle. It’s definitely good shape in net for the Caps right now.
