As Karl Alzner progresses, he will be the rock on the Caps blueline. Green is will be good for getting those clutch goals and racking up points, but I think Alzner will be the true backbone of the Caps D-corps. As a Penguins fan, I hope he has a breakout year around the same time the Caps need to re-sign several other youngsters, so maybe they have some cap issues….but that’s a little selfish I suppose.

I also think Alzner is ready for regular minutes. It may take him a couple weeks or a month to get in a groove, but Washington is good enough to make up for his learning curve. Once he gets into a groove, he will be a monster back there. Unfortunately.

by Link_Gaetz on Sep 17, 2009 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure if I’m buying into the hype about this kid just yet. I know he’s young, but the games I saw him play in last year made me say “Steve Eminger: The Return!” instead of “Wow, The Sky is the Limit.”

Also, I haven’t been to camp yet so I guess I don’t have much room to talk thusfar. Feel free to disagree with me.

by bigmac1124 on Sep 17, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s pretty harsh. I don’t know if you can fairly compare Emi and Alzner, their games are completely different.

by Sct112 on Sep 17, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

It is harsh, but I guess I just don’t believe he’s going to be the “rock” that people think he’s going to be.

by bigmac1124 on Sep 17, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

In the first 20 games of his 30 games last year, Alzner was a rock: a PIM-free, Toronto Maple Leaf destroying rock.

Then he reminded us all that he was a rookie. I still thought his game looked pretty good, though, regardless.

by DrinkingPartner on Sep 17, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems to me he might be one of those gradual type of developments—like a Jeff Shultz maybe? Possibly I’m just biased for people like John Carlson who seems to be developing ahead of schedule, with the blinders on for sure.

by bigmac1124 on Sep 17, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Q: Is Carlson developing ahead of schedule, the clamor for a prospect is reaching its traditional, slightly overheated OMG! OMG!-level din, or a little of both?

A: A little bit of both, but more the latter.

by TylerG on Sep 17, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Both Alzner and Carlson (and Schultz and Green) are significantly ahead of schedule. Alzner’s game just doesn’t lend itself to the kind of “OMG this guy is the bestest” fan hype the Tyler describes because it’s not flashy or offense oriented.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 17, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Alzner has what, 60 games in the AHL? I’d say he’s right on schedule.

by TylerG on Sep 17, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

On what schedule? 20 year olds don’t normally have 30 NHL games, 60 AHL games, and (most of) a Calder Cup run under the belt. Most 20 year old D are not nearly as polished and developed as Alzner. As far as “on schedule compared to Green and Schultz” I’d agree, but both of those guys were ahead of the curve as well.

Frankly, Eminger showed a lot of promise as a young’un. We all expect a lot more from Alzner, but I don’t think it’s an unfair comparison, simply because when I saw Eminger at first, I thought he was going to be really good too :)

by grapejoos on Sep 17, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for understanding where I was getting at. :) I think the post I made was mostly from my own feeling when I first saw him play. He came out for the first few games of the year before they sent him back to Kitchener the same year they drafted one spot before Semin. Then he kind of just stood still—like he already peaked in junior—while I was waiting for development. I have that similar feeling about Karl, but I hope I’m wrong.

by bigmac1124 on Sep 17, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

You also have to remember how long it takes defensemen, especially defensive defensemen, to develop in the NHL. Generally, goalies and defensive d-men take longer to develop than skilled forwards and offensive d-men.

I think once he settles in and gets his timing down, he will be a stud.

by Link_Gaetz on Sep 17, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s true they do take longer to develop so there’s no real point in debating this until the answers come in…five years from now! lol

by Rob Parker on Sep 18, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Alzner has much better pedigree than Eminger had, and plays a lower risk game. I don’t think it’s an accurate comparison.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 17, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Alzner is going to be a stud, and I tend to agree that the Caps could live with some of his growing pains through the beginning of the season. But based on watching him yesterday I don’t know that he is an upgrade over what we have already and I think GMGM wants to put the best team he can put on the ice every game this year. DET showed that you can develop D very well by overcooking them in the AHL. Ericsson has been NHL ready for a while now, but that just made his transition to the NHL (in the playoffs, no less) more seamless. Since Eminger GMGM has been hesitant to rush prospects so unless they are confident Alzner can play right now I don’t think they will move an NHL D just to make room for him to go through growing pains.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 17, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

And the cap stuff is less of an issue for me; any competitive team that drafts well is going to have cap issues and tough decisions about which players to retain. If Alzner lives up to his potential it will be a no-brainer to keep him, and in any event his cost will be lower than guys like Green and Carlson because he won’t score as much.

A man must have a code.

NHLNetwork seems to be replaying TSN feeds of games, so mainly it’s the Canadian teams, natch, that are being shown. Tonight, for example, they are showing Flyers/Leafs.

Are final 2 games against the Rangers will be shown on NHLN in Cananda, but that doesn’t do most of us much good.

I thought the same thing about that last year, but sadly the Flightless F-ing Fowl got in our way of that (as did the Winged Wheel of Woe).

At least we know Huet will occassionally lose sight of the puck in Game 7 OTs, eh? If he’s their starter, that is…

Unfortunately, the Caps are probably not getting the same delicious 15-1 odds to win it all like they were last Fall. Without having checked, I’d guess we’re around 4- or 6-1 odds this year?

If the game is being broadcast for the home crowd in Buffalo then there is already a feed and it shouldn’t be that hard to get it to Caps fans. by CapitalCentre on Sep 17, 2009 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

Is it possible that they’d be platooned back and forth from Hershey? If Theo retains the starting job, which seems likely at the moment, whichever one is the backup is going to spend a lot of time on the bench. Seems to me they both deserve a reasonble chance to play.

And right now, it would seem that Neuvirth has a stronger case, but maybe that’s more a function of how the scrimmage teams were allocated. I wasn’t there to watch and didn’t follow it closely enough.

by gfcaps fan on Sep 17, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Still way too early to start handicapping the goalie competition. Wait ’til they play in sorta real games versus scrimmages for that.

The platoon idea is enticing, as I agree with you that both the kid goalies would be best served by playing big minutes. However, once the season starts, the focus is on winning this year, and individual development has to take a back seat. Who knows, maybe Theodore ends up as the backup.

by fat_daddyo on Sep 17, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

If Theo is a back up it’s because one of the kids took the bull by the horns and flat out took the job. If that doesn’t happen then you have Theo getting most of the starts. In that situation I like the platoon idea so both goalies get regular starts, and regular work with Irbe. Maybe swap them every ten games or so (that also leaves both goalies eligible for the Calder Cup Playoffs).

That’s actually a fairly intriguing set of lines, if that’s how they skate. Every one with a subplot…

Is Brooksie really and truly going to be able to activate his inner scorer this year? Well, skating with Backstrom is as good as it gets set-up wise.

Can Alexandre Giroux score six, let alone sixty, goals in the NHL? He’s on a scoring line…let’s watch.

I think it is safe to say that this may be one of Giroux’s last stands – unless his path is like Robert Lang’s.

Why am I not buying Laich as a top 6? Ever?

by S h a g g y on Sep 17, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

My guess is that he’s doing that because Laich looked good on the top line in scrimmages, and because he’s auditioning Laich to take Flash’s place at 2LW.

What do you mean by the Robert Lang path? He was in the NHL much younger than Giroux is now.

Yeah, but he didn’t do much until he switched teams in his late 20’s; I think that’s what Shaggy’s getting at.

by David Getz on Sep 17, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s the same with Knuble. Being in the NHL but not producing until you hit your prime is different from producing in the AHL but not getting a real shot in the NHL until your prime, IMO.

Yet Backstrom is playing… is anyone else SUPER nervous about that like I am? Didn’t he mess up an ankle in preseason before? Which led to an uncharacteristically sluggish start to the season? Or are the paint fumes finally taking their toll on me brain?

Perhaps BB is thinking he needs to start developing the Knuckles-Backis chemistry now?

In case it’s not clear from my FanPost, I completely disagree with OFB that the top line looked in mid-season form. They dominated, but what do you expect when 80% of their opposition isn’t NHL quality. I also think they were harsh on Theo (from F&B? Really?) The first goal was a point shot through traffic. The second was a rebound off the post from a Giroux shot from the face off dot. The third was Semin shooting all alone from the face off dot. I forget the fourth. All in all I thought Theo looked fine.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
