CBCer @JeffMarek considering renaming self @CrosbyFluffer
Given how extensively the Canadian hockey media is in the tank for Pittsburgh forward and oiled-up barely-legal model Sidney Crosby, it would take truly remarkable Crosby-worship for one Canadian journalist to rise above the rest. And yet Jeff Marek, a CBC radio host and tweeter, has managed to differentiate himself from his peers. His Crosby-fluffing medium of choice: Twitter.
Marek's Crosby worship took off during the Canadian Olympic orientation camp when his Crosby-obsessive Tweets spawned a mini-competition to see who could RT them and make fun of them first and best. Here's a quick recap:
- @JeffMarek started slowly -- "Crosby looks excellent. But then again, didn't he just win the cup yesterday?" -- but quickly ramped up;
- "Crosby leading the stretch at centre. Very exciting tweet that was";
- "Team White skate over. Crosby was the class of the skate again. Wash - rinse - repeat.";
- "I should have the new line combos in a couple of hours. Will be curious to see if the keep crosby/nash together. They've been magic." (Magic? In a pre-season, pre-camp, pre-practice practice? Is Marek 12 years old? Does he believe in dragons?);
- "Crosby is killing everyone in the faceoff drills. So much for that being a weak part of his game."; and
- "I hope you all get to see this pass Crosby made to Derek Roy tonight at the scrimmage. Best pass of the camp hands down." (Seriously? Rating passes at pre-season, pre-camp, pseudo-scrimmages?)
@JeffMarek's fluff job became so epic in the Twittersphere that even NHL public relations staffers have piled on. After @JeffMarek tweeted this last night -- "Crosby w/a pair tonight vs Jackets. I'll repeat again, he was the best player at [Team Canada] orientation camp." -- Caps PR chief Nate Ewell couldn't take it anymore and tweeted back: "Heard you the first 457 times, Jeff."
Amen.

Innuendo aside, I actually think Sid is rather humble considering the attention he gets.

I think that the effect of all that attention has manifested itself in a slightly different way with Crosby, actually. I think that might be where the whining and diving comes from – he’s been told he’s a star player so many times that he expects to never get hit and expects all the calls.

We’re getting dangerously close to glass house territory here – our superstar likes getting calls too.

Yeah. But there’s no player in the entire NHL who bitches and begs more than Whiny Diver. I mean, like @JeffMarek inadvertently pointed out, it’s so ingrained into his make-up that he whined during a frickin’ pre-season, pre-camp, orientation scrimmage.
Careful; the first half of this sounds like a CI poster.

Crosby has improved, and no one questions his work ethic. Not as if Ovechkin doesn’t do the same thing either.

Crosby whining is a valid complaint if the year is 2005 or 06. He’s settled down a lot since he was 18.
Does he communicate a lot with the refs? You bet. Does he look for a lot of calls that he doesn’t get? Of course.
But he is the captain, and a function of that is to interact w/ the refs. And as a superstar, that’s a pre-req to look for some calls. The abuse that superstars take (from opponents to the fans) also merits a little lee-way, IMO.
On the original topic: Marek’s praise does border on over-excessive, but Crosby’s an exciting player. He has that effect on non-jaded observers, just like the guy in Washington does too.

Yet his backing of the AO’s Sochi move and his joke at the WH last week seem to redeem that to some degree, to say the least that he’s still got scoreboard bragging rights.
Can we get back to the unbelievable Schrute-baggery of Marek, as opposed to this being yet another boring-ass “Cindy Whines!” circle jerk?

The hats thing is a non-issue, to me.
- he had a point, there were some late hats being thrown. I’m not gonna be a high-brow prick and talk etiquette, everyone deserves to celebrate….I’m just sayin, it would have perturbed about anyone.
- You’ve got an emotional guy very fired up and eager to get back out there and score (which he did 4 minutes later). I’ll be the first to admit, it’s a little much to ask for an announcement over the PA, but he’s fired up and in the heat of playoff hockey. Weirder things have happened.
Given the circumstances, I don’t see that as a major stain against maturity.

Hooks sees WD more, so I defer, with doubts. But I half-live on Center Ice and WD dives more than any player in the league. It’s not close.
Indeed. I’m on record as saying he’s the biggest diver in hockey.

Crosby does fall a lot, but I don’t think it’s to draw calls and dive. He plays down on 1 knee a lot, he looks to shoot/pass from weird angles and is all over the place. He even trains for explosiveness coming out of awkward positions and stuff, part of why he’s good on the puck down low.
But then again, I’d expect you to have a different perspective than I do. FWIW I don’t think Crosby got a diving minor all season in 2008-09 (could be wrong). Ovechkin, I believe got 2 or 3 — one of which still stands out in my memory as a flagrantly terrible call.

When Brooks Laich cross checked him in the playoff series Crosby went down way too easily for a guy who is a tank on his skates. When that guy sets his feet he’s on rails, but when Laich gives him a shot to the side it’s like he’s Happy Gilmore. Like BP, I don’t really want to turn this into an old hat debate, I just want to point out that just because he doesn’t get called, or isn’t as obvious as he used to be, doesn’t mean he’s changed that much.
A man must have a code.
If there’s one thing that’s ZERO indication of whether or not a guy dived it’s a referee calling diving. They’re awful at it. When a zebra calls diving you pretty much know the guy didn’t dive. Insert standard NHL officiating beefs here.
If you say so, Tyler. Since this isn’t the point of the post, I’ll agree with you guys and drop the subject as well.
But I think your Crosby hate is getting in the way of reason if you think he’s bad when this clown is around.

Avery is in a League of his own. We’re talking about hockey players, not sideshows.

In some ways he reminds me of Jim Carrey as Truman in The Truman Show. Raised in a fishbowl, with the whole world watching, 24-7.
IS PAЯTY NOW
…but back to this @Sycophant. CBC is cheapening itself by letting such lewd peeping persist. At least Marek could attempt to hide it with, say, a snuggle photo with Nash. Or something.

Rick Nash doesn’t gear nearly the press he deserves. I could watch the highlight goal where he undressed two Phoenix defenders, and the goaltender, scoring with 20 seconds left, over and over.

Phoenix got burned for the goal of the year two years in a row. Last year the Canadiens were O’Burned twice for top-5 goals of the year.Coyotes, Canadiens, next up Bs?

Actually, it would be the Canucks, Capitals, or if you want to stretch, the ’Canes.
