Wednesday Caps Clips: The Cup Will Be Skated Today
Your savory breakfast links:
- Group A played and won their first Duchesne Cup game in
a yawn-inducingan epic shootout, thanks to Boyd Gordon's sixth round goal:- Singled out for strong performances were Michal Neuvirth and Jose Theodore, Karl Alzner and John Carlson, Keith Aucoin and Nicklas Backstrom. [Capitals Insider]
- Singled out for other reasons was the top line of Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin and Mike Knuble, of whom Bruce Boudreau said, "They were fine, but I don't think the pace was anywhere near where it should be. They're just good players and they were getting by on being good players." [In The Room]
- Video of the shootout and AO's and Bruce's respective media scrums. [Caps365]
- "Neuvirth suffered a deep scratch on the side of his neck from Alex Ovechkin's skate during the scrimmage," but is fine. That's a little too close for comfort. [@tarikelbashir]

- The Caps have re-upped with WFED and WTOP. [Capitals]
- Fake Twitter accounts... so five minutes ago, people. [Washington Post]
- AO might need to brush up on his economics. [NBC Washington]
- New pics are up over at Mike Green's website. [GreenLife52]

Seconded on Aucoin; he centered a line with Clark and Laich that clicked well yesterday. At one point, Backstrom made an insane pass to Knuble in the slot (with a defenseman on his back) that landed on the tape. Speaking of Knuble, it was fun to see him either about to set up shop in front of the net/just leaving the front of the net every time I looked.
You could tell the pace got a little more involved as the fake game went on.

They were fine, but I don’t think the pace was anywhere near where it should be. They’re just good players and they were getting by on being good players.
Sounds familiar… oh like February to April.

For example,
The Penguins best prospect, Eric Tangradi, has a Twitter account. One of the Pittsburgh blogs posted the link to that, so I figured I would check out if he said anything interesting about training camp.

If you had been around more often you’d know that the “Pittsburgh sucks as a city and their fans are mulleted hicks” crap comes up relatively regularly when we start talking about the Pens. I always try to make this distinction. You also clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Don’t talk to me about what is and isn’t allowed on Japers’ Rink. I’d like to think that even if Mike Green played for the Penguins, I will still think he was a tool. I mean, you have to admit, it’s a pretty embarrassing website.
I’m not going to get into the whole Pittsburgh / D.C. thing, but I just wanted to flex my “internet muscles” about my feelings on Mike Green.

For a guy making millions, Green is a pretty decent guy. He’s friendly with the fans even when they were ripping him in the playoffs, he’s incredibly close to his parents and has taken care of them financially. So he likes to spend some of his money on flashy cars and a cool home and digs the internet. That hardly makes him a toolbag.

b.orr4,
Crosby is a stand-up guy, too. I could tell you about all the things he does for the less fortunate and the community, but that probably won’t change your opinion of him. To the contrary, I’ve never had any complaints about Crosby’s off-ice behavior. In fact, I think he’s a good ambassador for the league. My problem with him is his on-ice whining which seems to have improved somewhat. Going on another team’s site and getting personal about one of their star players is like yelling fire in crowded theater. You’re getting to get a strong reaction which, I guess, was probably your goal.

Sometimes it’s difficult when reacting to things the players say or do. For the most part, they’ve led sheltered lives, totally immersed in hockey. Most of them have never been to even a year of college; while that doesn’t mean they can’t be intelligent, it can be questioned if they’re educated. Doing well in school, as opposed to occupying a seat, may not have been high on their list of priorities. I’ve brought it up before, but you do have to wonder how their parents treated them growing up as well. Some will always do better than others.
by gfcaps fan on Sep 16, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let’s face it. There’s a lot of jealousy directed towards pro athletes making millions. And when they flaunt it a little, it just aggravates the situation for some. Like I said, the fact that he’s so close to his parents, takes care of them and wants them around says a lot more about his character then some tattoos and a website.

Green’s also been an extremely good sport about the Rawk the Hawk promo for Eliot the past couple of years. Anyone who puts up with Eliot and 6 am can’t be that bad.

Per Corey article:
The simplest way to alleviate the logjam would be a trade (or two), but if general manager George McPhee doesn’t find a deal to his liking he likely will try to sneak a couple of players through waivers. That could mean losing an NHL-caliber defenseman for nothing.GMGM needs a very large thinking cap for this one. Or a big dose of luck. He rolls the dice on a youngster and gets a flop? Uh oh. Here we go again – yet another year — of using the Caps’ D as The Big Excuse.

But “NHL-caliber” here means Sean Collins and/or Tyler Sloan, and if one of them gets snagged, so be it. It’s not like he’s going to try to get Mo or Juice past 30 teams.

JP, did you by chance get the chance to ask Sloan why he re-signed with the Caps, even though odds are he’ll spend most of the year in Hershey? I just can’t believe there wasn’t some team out there that offered him a slight more assured spot on the big club.

sorry, I did not mean to imply that we should trade for a 3rd pair guy….I want GMGM to execute a trade of (at least) one of our four, preferably Juice, packaged up with, say, an A. Gordon, for some depth on the wing or picks. I know this begs for one of the King or Carlson to stick, too.

We should be in the business of promoting poor decisions on the part of enemy GMs, not questioning them! You didn’t prevent any European clubs from picking up Nyls, did you?

I don’t think picking up Nylander would be a bad move for a European club. They’d likely not have to pay much salary and get a guy who can be a solid producer over there.
by David M. Getz on Sep 16, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Part of the answer depends on which 3rd liner we’re talking trade. Personally, I think Juice is the tradiest because of his age, salary and upside that some other GM sees as filling a need on his team. Erskine would draw a much smaller group of suitors. Alzner could easily slip into Juice’s role right now, imo, and not so much Erskine’s.

Sloan and Collins having one-way contracts could help them get through waivers. In fact, that’s probably the reason McPhee gave them those deals.
by b.orr4 on Sep 16, 2009 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
everyone keeps say how solid Sloan and Collins have been in camp, a weaker D team might find them to be very attractive #6-7 D men. Collins is a bit of an unknown quantity at the NHL level, but I’m sure it didn’t escape other teams that when the Caps needed another D-man for the playoffs, it was Sloan that they went with (and player quite well)
by RedBirdie on Sep 16, 2009 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But that won’t happen, again. This season, in a similar situation, that call up will be Alzner (if he’s in Hershey) or Carlson. I don’t think BB can “overlook” (used very loosely) Carlson, anymore, regardless of the type of D that gets hurt.

GMGM needs a very large thinking cap for this one. Or a big dose of luck. He rolls the dice on a youngster and gets a flop? Uh oh. Here we go again – yet another year — of using the Caps’ D as The Big Excuse.
-———-
I think it’s a bit more nuanced than what you lay out, with the happy result that the resolution is a little easier.
First, while they have a long list of “NHL Caliber Defensemen”, they have probably 3 guys who are legit top-2 pairing guys: Green, Poti and maybe Pothier.
Then the question is, can any of the other guys take a step forward and fill that 4th spot on the top-2 lines? My guess/hope is that Schultz does it – the added bulk is a hopeful sign. If not him, then maybe Alzner, but we’ll see.
After that, you have a scrum of guys fighting for spots 5, 6, 7 and maybe 8 – in other words, more marginal talents playing a more marginal role on the team.
Carlson and Alzner will either make it a no-brainer, or they get stashed in Hershey, no problems.
So we’re really talking about the possibility of parting company, either via trade or waiver loss, with Erskine, Mo, Jurcina, Sloan or Collins. Personally, I won’t tear my hair out if any of those guys ply their trade elsewhere.
Seven guys, either 3 or 4 slots. It would be nice to have them all for depth, but it’s just not that terrible a dilemma in my view.
by fat_daddyo on Sep 16, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly, given that we signed Mo for a dream compared to what we paid him last year, I’d hate to see him go (though I could be wrong about this – I know he signed his QO, but it could be for more than I thought it was).
If Alzner or Carlson are better options than Erskine, I’ll take that any day, even though the loss of yet another potential scrapper is a little disheartening.
Sloan and Collins will be the Erskine and Juice of tomorrow, in about 3 or 4 years, I’d guess. I wouldn’t lose much sleep over either of them if they went elsewhere.
And I agree with your Top 4, except that I’d go on and give Mo the solid #4. He and Pothier are similarly valuable.
I also personally don’t see Juice going anywhere. If he can replicate his playoff performance consistently, he’ll have been worth the arbitration for this year, but probably not for the impending arbitration for next year.
by DrinkingPartner on Sep 16, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mo’s QO was 1.975. His agent team was talking about going to arbitration, so I was really surprised when he signed his QO. My guess is that Mo knew he’d better sign if he wanted to play for the Caps this year given the depth on the blueline.

quick thoughts on yesterday
Banckstrom is in fine, fine form. No repeat likely of last year’s malaise to start the season.
8-19-22 is not meshing the way I would hope. I have a nagging concern that 22 can’t keep up with 8 and 19 and that he won’t have much opportunity to camp out in front of the net. I agree with BP that he looked good once he got there but 9-28 is a noticeably better combo right now.
Ovi never comes off the ice and his shifts are no shorter than they were last year. Maybe this is just preseason conditioning but the shifts I timed were all well over a minute.
One final note from the first scrimmage: maybe it was all in good fun but it sure looked to me like Finley was trying to pick a fight with Jasinsky. If so, Finley should think twice.
by ChrisAm on Sep 16, 2009 9:40 AM EDT via mobile reply actions 0 recs
There aren’t many guys who have the jets to keep up with Ovechkin in full cry; that’s why Cody Eakin’s skating knocks me over like it does.
Still, that might be okay. It may mean that Knuble is the trailer into the offensive zone, and he walks in and scoops up the rebounds. We’ll see.

I actually think Ovie should slow it down more often. I cringe when he goes in full speed, shoots, and the Caps can’t change because the other team immediately counterattacks. The Care Bears did a good job of controlling the tempo without pushing it. Not sayin’ that’s the optimal solution, but 19 and 8 need to play that style more often so 22 can keep up. Especially 8.

you can do it through the online account manager. Very easy, I did it a couple times last year. Came in very handed when I had to leave town 4 hours before a game and couldn’t connect with a friend to physically hand over tickets.

Crap – I meant to respond to Zephyr on this and it slipped my mind. I’ll put it in tomorrow’s links post and will get a permanent link up on the front page before long. Sorry, Z – great effort.

I was about to email you and say sorry that I missed your green light on this, looks like I don’t have to do that now =]
Sounds good. I think I’ll skip the fan post for now since your front page link should be more than enough to get all the interested people signed up.

Wish CSNHD would play the scrimmage instead of reruns of last night’s interview. I’m not leaving my couch today and that’s best for everyone.

4 assists from AO today – the man is possessed!

Haha – this tweet cracked me up:
Boyd Kane with a nifty breakaway goal at the other end to make it 8-4. Bob Woods can’t be enjoying this.

In regard to AO’s assist total thus far, it seems like he’s playing on their fears of shooting the puck, and is absolutely disgracing them when they leave teammates wide open. I can only hope that carries on.

I don’t like that Varly let that many in, though I grant that I have no idea whether it was his fault or the defense’s.

Yeah, wish I could have been there to watch this one. He certainly got a lot of assists this past season. Maybe he’ll be feeding backstrom and knuble quite a bit this year.

Kan-knuckles, at the very least. Backstrom is so awesome he doesn’t need any help – he is the help.

Knuble got two goals in this game picking up Ovechkin’s trash.

@cmasisak22: Knuble from Ovechkin. 8-3. Ovechkin is setting a career high for assists this year. Take that to Vegas right now.

I buy it, but it’s not as if he hasn’t had a ton in the past – he does, after all, have the second-highest assist total by a non-winger since the lockout.

I’m reading Corey’s summary — Giroux scored on a breakway?!? Someone in goal must have been asleep. Or not an NHL goalie, Iost track of who was in what goal. /snark

That would have been Theodore.

I believe Giroux scored on Holtby. 3rd period was when they changed goalies.

Don’t jump to assumptions GS. AO set up Knuble on beautiful passes for both goals, neither was a rebound off an AO shot.

I’d like to think that I’d be happy with either outcome – beautiful pass or garbage rebound. All are equal in my eyes.

True enough. I’m just clarifying how it went down.

It would be easy to assume, given the narrative we’ve painted, that “Knuble from Ovechkin” means tapping in a rebound.
Man, I really wish I could be watching all this.

Ovechkin skated around the Cup before giving it to Theodore. Then they took a team photo.
Here’s hoping he does that twice more this season.

Well, it won’t be to Jose both times, though. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure that Jose would be pretty insulted if he did, come mid-Feb.

If I were Gabby, I would remind the guys how hard they’ve worked to earn that trophy and implore them to celebrate it. Celebrating what you’ve earned seems like something Lord Stanley would want us all to do (a few days before hoisting the Big One!)
