My thoughts and photos from TC Day 2
I went down to Training Camp today. Here are some random observations and a bunch of photos I took.
Group A did drills early in the morning while B and C scrimmaged at 12.
Giroux seemed a lot bigger then I remembered. He worked with Semin and Brendan Mo today. Semin and Mo had some nice passes between the two and didn't look awful together.
Nylander showed a lot of hesitance. They were typical things like skating up to the blueline (with the puck) and instead of going in or dumping it he would just circle back into the neutral zone causing either offsides or a turnover. He was really bad in corners just circling back and getting manhandled or again turning over the puck. Early on he had some nice chances and even shot the puck once or twice. Overall though, it was pretty rough to watch.
During the scrimmage Bruce and some of the prospects sat in the bleachers. At one point Nylander had an awful turnover and I looked over and Bruce was just shaking his head.
Laing looked strong and confident. Coming into camp I really thought Bourque would get that last spot but it seems like Laing might have the inside edge early in camp.
The defense is really hard to tell and I don't envy the decisions ahead for the coaching staff/McPhee. It will probably (again) come down to numbers$$$.
If I had to take an absolute stab in the dark based on only two days of camp, this would be my guess at opening night..

One random story: A guy drove from Hershey today to not only see Camp but to get this Varlamov jersey signed for his disabled brother ( who apparently loves varly). Well Joe B overheard all this and did his best to get Varly to come out and sign the jersey. In the end Joe B came through and this kid got his brother's jersey signed by Varly. Pretty cool. He left for Hershey pretty happy.
LASTLY,
Here's a link for the photos I took. They aren't edited and I barely know how to use my camera!

Thanks for the insight. I don’t think I’ll be able to get down there very much (if at all) during camp so I appreciate the info from everyone that has been passing along.
I’m not sure if you meant it this way, but I don’t see any chance in hell that Mike Green isn’t on the top D pair.
Man, I would much rather the Caps had kept Fehr in the yellow jersey. No need for that change.
It’s been said a lot here but I just want to reiterate how extremely unlikely it is that Giroux makes the jump from career AHLer to an NHL top 6 guy at this point in his career.
A man must have a code.
Awesomesauce.
Was getting a little dizzy watching ’em skate laps. You had a pretty great seat bench!
IS PAЯTY NOW
You really think Girouxe is not only gona make the Caps, but start on the 2nd line? He must have really impressed when you saw him.
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
No, the only reason I think he will start on the second line is because that is probably Flash’s spot and Flash will be out for at least a few weeks. Since Giroux has the similar style/potential he would be a good fit for that spot while Flash is gone.
Plus if your looking for a scoring winger to fill in for Flash theres really no one better on the depth chart then Giroux- the guy scored over 70 goals I believe last year and probably deserves for us to give him a look for more then 1-2 games.
But we shall see I guess.
" 60 percent of the time...it works everytime"
I think this makes sense unless the Caps move Laich up to the 2nd line and give Bourque another cup of coffee instead. I’m inclined to give Giroux a last chance of sorts – there are big flaws in his game, but some of those (like taking penalties) can be helped, and when he was up last year he constantly got himself scoring chances, just couldn’t convert. I can’t shake that a guy that scored that much in the AHL shouldn’t be playing for some team in the NHL, even if it’s not the Caps.
But I’m also fine letting him lead the Bears on deep playoff runs and terrorizing AHL goalies if that’s what it comes down to.
