Ranking the Capitals: #40
In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals, from Ovechkin to, well, we'll see (only players under contract will be considered). The criteria is simple: who at this moment is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players - because of what he brings on the ice or off it, his upside, what he could fetch in trade, and so on - who would it be? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll. [Note: previous "Ranking the Capitals" posts can be found here."]

If I’m not mistaken, that’s everyone either on the list or in the poll…

Does that mean we only have one open contract for the coming year then as things stand? Are there guys that we would bring up from Hershey due to injury that would have to be signed to a contract with the caps still?

I switched and went with Circles. I’d like to think Nyls would spank the remaining group but who knows. It’s going to be pretty interesting—the burbling stew on the back burner….
I doubt this thing ends quietly.

It’s not about whether or not Nyls has more talent than the rest of the guys – he does. But it’s about his value to the team, and his is negative.
Frankly, I can see voting for Nylander dead last or earlier than now, but I’m not sure what the argument would be to vote for him now, but not before, say, Andrew Gordon.

I agree, I don’t see how he is getting votes now. You either thought he belonged 20 places up or he is dead last as far as value goes.

Comment first, think second, read third.
The Caps are better with Bruess, Dovgan, Finley, Hauswirth, Kane, McNeill, Miskovic, Pinnozzotto and Wilson in their system.
They’d be better off if Nylander was not in their system.
Doesn’t that make Nylander the least valuable guy?

Who the hell rec’d this. I’ve been saying this same damn thing since like poll number 10!

At this point, I look at Nyls as insurance against someone at the pivot getting hurt, and that has some value to me. If BMo or Steckel or Boyd get hurt my guess is Bruce pulls 92 out of the doghouse; he may go with Aucoin but I don’t think so.
Stretch’ll bring up the rear for me.

Looks like Nylander is going to crack the top 40. Congrats, that’s better than I expected.

From what I heard from development camp, and seeing the names up for voting, I gotta think Dmitri Orlov should be right in the mix by now.
Oh, I think Orlov would have gone before Holtby…

I think part of what’s going on here is that people recognize Nylander’s name, but haven’t really heard of the rest of the guys on this list. (Thus Finley beating out guys who are still playing the positions they were drafted to play) So in subsequent polls when people vote for one of the unknown prospects who are left, it might be nice to say something about the guy. Drop some stats or something. I’ll try to do a little writeup on Wilson for the next poll.

it’s not like he’s expected to play in South Carolina
Really? Are you sure about that?

Yeah — the Bears just signed Brandon Sugden. I’m not sure Finley has a slot on that team for this year…

I have to imagine that if Finley can even match Sugden’s production he gets the roster spot, but that Hershey roster is deep and I just don’t see it happening for Finley. To be honest I’m not sure Angus can crack the Hershey lineup so Finley definitely has a long road ahead of him.
