Japers' Rink (Fantasy) Hockey League
With the interest in my Original Post, I've decided to completely change this post into a detailed post.
The first (to my knowledge) JRHL is being organized at ESPN.com. The league is now full. Thanks to everyone who has joined. It will be a head to head categorical league.
The ultimate goal I had was to fill all 20 slots, and have four divisions of five. The four divisions would be the Langway, Labre, Hunter, and Gartner. (EDIT: If you've never played before, you may request to be in a division with players who also have not played before to increase parity. You may also ask me or any other experienced player who offers help any questions at all.)
The winner of the league will be awarded the ESPN equivalent of a trophy - a screen saying you won a trophy. This cup will be called the Japers' Rink Cup. Each division winner will also receive a banner. I'm toying with adding a "President DMG's Award" to the team with the highest cumulative stats on the regular season.
My deadline for joining the league is going to be September 24th. I can add teams after that if there's space, but at that point we need to know what divisions are going to happen, and make schedules and the like. The draft will occur on either Septermber 26th(Saturday) or September 27th(Sunday). We'll make that call with a poll on the site.
If you'd like to join, and I hope you do, please send an email to me at mage.ogre@gmail.com, and thank you to those who have already joined.
If this FanPost is written by someone other than one of the blog's authors, the opinions expressed in it do not necessarily reflect those of this blog or SB Nation.

I’m interested in a Rink fantasy league. Haven’t heard anything about one so I assume it doesn’t exist as of now.

I’ve never played in a fantasy league of any type before, but one of my customers talked me into a hockey draft. I’d be down for this one too, but I’ll probably get destroyed.

:o Cool to see some motion for it. Does anyone have objection to standard settings (I prefer head to head points, but could do h2h categories) at ESPN.com? It’s completely free, and I much prefer it to yahoo.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
As long as it doesn’t require more than 16 hours a day I don’t really care.

I log in for my baseball league once per week. I don’t want a league that requires 16 hours a day.

I think you missed some sarcasm.

Probably. I haven’t slept well lately, and I’m watching the coverage of the Coyotes trial.

It’s cool. I was making fun of myself more than anything really.

Ah – I’ll need people’s email addresses to invite them. You can just email me if you’re interested – mage.ogre@gmail.com. I can’t figure out how to find your guys’s emails from the profiles.

Ok guys, thanks to those who have responded so far.
Japers’ Rink Hockey League (JRHL) will have as many people as willing to sign up. I think we ought to have the draft a week before the opening game. Deadline to send me your email address will be September 24th. The draft will be the 26th or the 27th, to keep it on a weekend, when I figure most of us will be able to attend. Invites will be sent out as I receive your email addresses. I’m going to use ESPN’s default H2H Category set up. Thanks for all the interest – I’ve wanted to get into a second league, and I don’t like public ones too much (Bad experience).

ditto re: public leagues. impossible to avoid the 14-year-olds who sign up and then stop paying attention after they lose the first game or two.

(no offense to 14-year-olds anywhere..)

As someone who works in retail, I’ll say it for you. I hate 14-year-olds.

Long and short, you draft a “team” of real players. Their performance on the ice (in Hockey’s case) determines how well your team performs. If my team scores 10 goals, and yours scores 13 in a week, you get one “win”. It goes per category (In the way we have it set up).
It is complex and weird your first time, but the more you play, the more you get it, and, at least in my case, the more you get into it.

Draft is we all meet up online (those who can) and we each pick our players. The draft is serpentine – for instance, if I draft first in round one, I draft last in round two. If you can’t make it, you can prerank players, so your list will pick the player on your list highest available.
I left out – after the draft, you can cut/sign/trade players as well.

I’m having a problem- I click the “Accept Invitation and Join League” button, and it says that there’s an error. It says “WE’RE SORRY the custom league is private”.

Hm. I had a friend have that problem with my other league – I’ll ask him how he fixed it.

nevermind- I fixed it. What had happened was that I had to create an ESPN account, and then it took me to the JRHL page, but the error came up. So I went back to the invite email and clicked the link again and I think it’s working.

With 20 teams, you might consider reducing the sizes of the rosters. 20 teams x 2 goalies = 40 goalies, but only 30 will be NHL starters. Same basic problems with 5 D, 9 F, and a large bench. We’re going to run out of players right quick at this rate.
I propose one starting lineup per team: 3 forwards, 2 D, 1 G, and a bench of 3. That’ll mean that only the cream of the crop around the league gets drafted, which can be more fun. 6 F and 4 D would work too, if we want to showcase a deeper knowledge of the league (I’d still go with just one G).
Thanks for putting it together!
Atta dinnin stick a who!
I prefer the deeper knowledge of the league thing :3 Good ideas – I’ll change that.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
the goalie change was a must, good catch GOD.
someone correct me if i’m off-base here, but just three bench spots when we’re starting 11 players seems way too small. i understand the idea of keeping the free agent pool stocked, but if each of us has only 3 bench spots, that eliminates much of the “start ’em or sit ’em” that makes fantasy sports fun. we’d basically just be sticking with our studs through thick and thin, and there would be little managing going on. also, what happens if one or two of your stars get injured? then you have only one or two bench spots to play with? the lineups become pretty stagnant and there’s no room to invest in prospects. in my fantasy football league, we start 10 players and i consider our 5-player bench to be a short bench.

I agree with you but I think in a 20 team league the talent is going to be spread pretty thin no matter what so injuries are going to be a big problem. The “start ’em or sit ’em” problem is a fun part of fantasy sports but in reality the studs are going to be playing every game and the guys you are debating between are going to be marginal players so it’s less of an issue anyway.

then lower the number of starters. if i’m not touching my lineup most weeks, it’s basically a game of “who had the best draft.” weekly bragging rights come from picking the one marginal player over the other and finding the random 2-goal night, no?
