Former Lightning GM Jay Feaster on No Trade/Movement Clauses (spoiler alert: He's not a fan).

It’s a difficult spot because it’s something of value that teams can offer without spending a dime… but I guess that last part becomes somewhat arguable, doesn’t it?

Well, not knowing who else has them (related: 150?!? Holy crap!), my first impulse is to think that GMs were using it similar to what Feaster was doing; now that most GMs have got living in a cap-enforced reality down, they may be hesitant to toss it around so liberally in the future.

I wouldn’t be surprised to start seeing more limited no-trade/movement clauses. When a guy gets into his thirties and has a wife and kids to think about uprooting he’s probably going to want some security, but you’re right GMs are probably more hesitant to throw them out now than they used to be. Ergo, a happy medium.

But at the same time, like I mentioned above, these are “no cost” ways of increasing contract value, so for a team at the cap that can’t offer a few more bucks, they can offer an NMC. For a team without much money who wants to compete for a UFA, they can up their offer with an NMC. They’re awfully tempting for a GM to use, obviously.

(Here’s a list of players with NMC/NTC, supposedly current and correct as of 3/2/09)

Without very little actual, you know, work, it looks like a good portion of those are more formalities, and the number of contractual albatrosses relative to that team’s cap health don’t appear to be as many as I presumed.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
