Tuesday Caps Clips: Alex Ovechkin's Arschgeweih
Your savory breakfast links:
- In case you missed it, Alex Ovechkin's arschgeweih has made its first public appearance. [Puck Daddy]
- Semyon Varlamov's "priority is to become #1 in Washington," otherwise he "will miss out on the Olympics" and, presumably, skinny chicks. [@dchesnokov]
- That's a good priority for Varly to have, of course, since not everyone's even sold on him being the better of the Caps' two prized young netminders. [NHL.com]
- It's great to hear that Sergei Fedorov won his $60 million lawsuit, but isn't "former hockey star" a little harsh? [cbc.ca]
- Shaone Morrisonn is a good union soldier: "I don't really know what's going on but... we have the right guys in place and we trust their judgement. We trust what's going on." [The Vancouver Sun]
- John Carlson as a starting defenseman for the London Knights alumni team already? That doesn't bode well for John Erskine this fall. [The Hockey News]
- Happy 45th birthday to NSFW YouTube sensation Brian Bellows and happy 49th birthday to Alan Haworth. Haworth scored twenty or more goals in each of his five seasons in Washington and totaled 268 points and a plus-67 rating in 346 career games for the Caps.

Did they whine to the referees?

Probably not. It’s not like a ton of hats were thrown at them.

J.P., OT, but what led you to put that Kopitar piece on the sidebar yesterday? It’s a great read but it was just odd seeing a Kings specific article linked there. You got a thing for Kopitar (or Botta)? Or is this lasting friendly relationships from the cross-conference questioning the other week?

Good question. I like Botta, and it was his first post at his new FanHouse gig. Also, I like the Kings a bit and try to provide you guys with interesting reads, even if they’re not exactly on topic.

I liked Botta’s work with the Isles (that is the same guy right?) and I really like Kopitar so I thought it was a very cool read. I don’t know how it happened but for secondary interests I like all the CA teams so I’ll read most of the stuff on them.

Yup, same guy. It’ll be interesting to see what he does at FanHouse. Good get for them.

Plus ça change on the NHLPA front.
I really thought Kelly was going to stick and provide some integrity to the post, and also involve himself and the union more fully and creatively in other matters which should concern the players — like for example, safety — than simply trying to figure out how best to force another work stoppage.
He was next to Bettman too often, fire him!

As a related aside, here’s some shameless self-promotion.

How can you say Eric Lindros won’t do as much for player safety as Kelly? Lindros showed great concern for player safety through his entire career, almost as much as concern for his own safety. Kelly only talked about “hits to the head” and “attempts to injure.” That lawyer talk has no room in a Man’s game.

Counting down to Oct 1….is it sad that I’m this excited about Caps hockey despite me being on an island in the South Pacific?

NHLPA leadership change
This will bear watching. I’m sure the players will want ‘more, more, more’. The losers would be the fans in any type of labor strike, no matter what the issue.
Yay! We can comment!
Wanted to say kudos for a mention of one of the Plumbers line (along with Greg Adams and that other guy…you know, the one who hangs out with Joe B. at the games….Laughlin…yeah that guy.) :D
Let's go Caps!
