Friday Caps Clips: Eakin Out an August Post
Your savory breakfast links:
- "Without a doubt the best player ever to come from west Michigan" stopped by the Grand Rapids Griffins youth camp. [WOOD TV8 (video)]
- Caps' 2009 3rd round pick Cody Eakin is one of 46 players in Saskatoon this week trying to make Canada's World Juniors squad (and he's only there because fellow Caps prospect Stefan Della Rovere is unable to participate in the on-ice activities due to the shoulder injury he suffered at Development Camp last month). Eakin "backchecks as relentlessly as he forechecks - skills that generate no tangible statistics, but are invaluable to any team." [Canwest]
- Team Massachusetts has a Caps/Bears flavor to it. [Illegal Curve]
- In honor of the release of the new G.I. Joe flick, the Top 10 Joes in NHL history, featuring one Cap (sorry Joes Motzko, Murphy, Reekie, Sacco - it ain't you). [Greatest Hockey Legends]
- The Hockey News is counting down it's 2009-10 predicted standings. Look for the Caps to make an appearance some time during the week of August 17. [The Hockey News]
- Carey Price has one more "w" on his hat than on his stat sheet for the 2008-09 playoffs. [Hockeyhead via D.C. Sports Bog]

Slightly hockey related, but United has a airfare sale going (either until or through today) for the US and Canada. The wife and I took advantage of it and booked Montreal for the possible Olympic Stadium game, or we’ll settle for the Bell. The hotel next to the Bell has a “buy one night, get the second half off” offer, so in case you want to blow money from today’s paycheck AND piss off your family by not seeing them Thanksgiving weekend, there you go.

wont lie, but a wife who allows the spontaneous trip to around sporting events are the greatest.
(Thanks again sweetie for going to Atlanta for the ’bama gmae!!!)
My husband was willing to consider going to Boston for New Year’s, so he gets bonus points.

That sucks that his hockey card photo had that ridiculous contraption on his helmet. It’s not like he wore it all year.
I have a few cards with the fishbowl on his head. Strange.

For a moment I thought I might post a comment expressing concern over Delly’s lingering shoulder injury. Then I remembered that he’s ticketed for Barrie, he won’t possibly be in the NHL for 13 months, and that I’m only thinking about this because it’s 28 days until hockey returns. Sigh.
Twitter’s blocked at work. What is it?

I think I’ve let them all expire. They were a waste of money, as far as I can tell.

I let my Danny Briere sponsorship expire. It was fun while it lasted, though.

JP, Slight clarification. From the coverage I’ve read, my understanding is Della Rovere is at the camp for the off-ice stuff, but not participating in the on-ice activities. (Eakin replacing Della Rovere, O’Dell replacing Hodgson.) Here’s some more coverage of the camp:
http://www.tsn.ca/world_jrs/feature/?id=11922
Also, for those interested, the USA Hockey U20 dev camp starts today in Lake Placid.

OK, we really know we’re in the dog days of summer when we’re reduced to debating an all-joe list :-). Appreciate the effort, though. How many days to training camp?
Convinced that a Joé wouldn’t be allowed on a list of Joes, I wasted a good half minute to a minute racking my brain for what former Cap “Joe” made the list. I was seriously feeling stupid when I finally clicked through, and then I was a little too annoyed that a Joé counted as a Joe.
Nevermind that I obviously ignored the big fat picture of him staring at me…
The best player ever to come from west Michigan busy handing out signed Flyers’ cards to the kiddies. Arrgh. Need to get Noobs (Knoobs?) an updated promo kit.
This is the longest summer of my life. Soooooo freaking close now.
OK, because we’re all bitching about how bored we are, and because it was buried in another thread:
Caps’ Defensemen as Confederate Generals:
Jeff Schultz – James Longstreet
Mike Green – Stonewall Jackson
Discuss…
I feel like Mike Green is more of a George Pickett kind of guy. And Ovechkin could be Sherman…
Oh, and Schultz is totally McClellan. The resemblance is uncanny.
by Murshawursha on Aug 7, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Uh oh. McClellan was a failure, so you might draw the ire of the Schultz for Norris folks around here.
From Wikipedia:
“Although McClellan was meticulous in his planning and preparations, these attributes may have hampered his ability to challenge aggressive opponents in a fast-moving battlefield environment. He…was reluctant to apply principles of mass, frequently leaving large portions of his army unengaged at decisive points.”
Seriously… I’m changing Schultz’s nickname to McClellan. It’s damn near perfect.
by Murshawursha on Aug 7, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Also from Wikipedia:
“Although the majority of modern historians assess McClellan poorly as a battlefield general, a small but vocal faction of historians maintain that McClellan was indeed a highly capable commander, but his reputation suffered unfairly at the hands of pro-Lincoln partisans who needed a scapegoat for the Union’s setbacks.”
This is borderline creepy.

I prefer to think of my Caps as Union soldiers because they, um, won. Is Chris Clark our Chamberlain?

I hope someone can become our Ambrose Burnside, if only in the looks department.

Yeah, but the Confederates are just so much more charismatic — at least at the general office level. Seriously, who other than Grant and maybe McClellan has any lasting fame among the Union generals?
Alex Semin as Jeb Stuart?
We really need a Lothario Armistead.

Well if the guy’s name is Lothario it has to be Laich.

Sherman only burned down half of Georgia… I’d say he’s pretty famous.
/snark
A case could probably be made for Joseph “Fighting Joe” Hooker, but most likely only because of his name… I’m not sure he did anything really noteworthy.

If you call Mike Green Stonewall Jackson, what you’re saying is that he’s the most overrated defenseman in history. A poor choice IMO.

Wha yooo say, feller? Them’s fightin werds.
(I like Greener as George Pickett. Lunatic hair-on-fire charges. And I can definitely see Pickett in that hot tub.)

JP, I didn’t mean to offend by ‘bringing that stuff here’.
But yes, the _______ is in __________ today. And for the record, I think _____________ is being a stand up guy, honoring Canada’s military, who are currently getting shot up pretty bad along with our soldiers and Marines in Afghanistan.

I do it all the time. A lot of people read the site through the RSS feeds of the posts, or even just read the middle column content when they visit, so I like to make sure they see everything that’s worth seeing.
Plus, it’s a Friday in August and my Clips post was dying alive.

FWIW, if you needed more links…there were a few former Caps, well, more like former Bears/Caps prospects, news items last night/today and one more that showed up later, too. I’ll post here, in case anyone is interested:
I found the Aulin update interesting…There were a couple of items about Jared Aulin getting a tryout with Columbus including this one on Drinnan’s blog: link and this article
link
And there’s a blog interview with Louis Robitaille about his signing with the Lowell Devils on Chris Rahn’s blog.
Also, there’s an interview on amerks.com with Graham Mink. link
This one wasn’t there when you posted, but now there is a small feature on USA Hockey’s site that includes a bit about John Carlson link
