Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The most complete Alexander Semin highlight video I've seen. I figured Sasha could use some love after (1) the Japers' Rink consensus found him to be the least valuable Young Gun, and (2) a FanPost was devoted to Semin trade scenarios. Excuse the terrible music.

the only failings in this vid (besides the music) were the omission of the AS wrap-around goal on nittymaki and maybe last season’s OT slap shot by tim thomas.

by Natty Bumppo on Aug 6, 2009 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

I kept waiting for the slap shot, definitely deserves a mention.

on second thought, the goal from his knees against cam ward could’ve made the cut, too.

Sweetness. Lordy Lordy does that man have some puckhandling skills.

And an amazingly deceptive set of brakes on those skates.

1:15 was a beauty.

That World Championship shot vs. Italy is still the sickest wrister I think I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s so devious. Yet so simple.

by brs03 on Aug 6, 2009 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

poor, poor mr. italian goalkeeper. 7-1 final score, IIRC.

best stickhandler on the team: semin.
side conversation…who’s the best skater on the team? green?

by Natty Bumppo on Aug 6, 2009 10:01 AM EDT reply actions

Hmm, never really thought about it. Green is a safe choice, he’s pretty slick, but no one really sticks out to me as just being able to fly on our team.

by Mobsky on Aug 6, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

pothier as another candidate. and of course fedorov if we were talking last year’s team.

by Natty Bumppo on Aug 6, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

who’s the best skater on the team? green?

Absolutely. I just love watching his graceful, powerful stride.

Green, without a doubt. It was very close between him and Fedorov (the god of beautiful skating, imo) last season.

Steckel is a surprisingly pretty skater, although not nearly as explosive as Green.

by RedBirdie on Aug 6, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

so in a race, does green win? or AO? a skills competition needs to be incorporated into training camp for the fans.

by Natty Bumppo on Aug 6, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s a hard one. Ovi doesn’t seem to have a high top speed but he can hit those gears really quick. I think Green would be able to beat him in a lap race. Ovi would win going up the ice and skating through 3 people.

Nobody in hockey manages momentum like Ovechkin. Of course, momentum is half mass…

Love that they included international highlights, which many casual fans (myself included) had not seen before.

Also love: the snowjob he gave Marty; the goals off of the faceoffs (Pittsburgh?).

by Scott in Shaw on Aug 6, 2009 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

he was an absolute monster in the 2008 WC’s [full highlights]. his hometown even gave him a golden map covered in diamonds on account of it. the hands he showed on his second goal vs. canada (taking the puck cleanly off the bounce and out of the air)…brilliant.

between the performance vs. canada and all the highlight goals he scored vs. the maple leafs in this fanshot’s vid, it’s no wonder PPP is interested in a trade.

by Natty Bumppo on Aug 6, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t know he could fly like in that final highlight. How come we don’t see that speed more often?

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
