Monday Caps Clips: August Ends
Your savory breakfast links:
- NHL.com's "30 in 30" series takes a look at the Caps [NHL.com]
- R.I.P., Senator. [Ted's Take]
- Eric McErlain weighs in on the captaincy debate, which is great in and of itself, but as it foreshadows a rejuvenated Off Wing Opinion, we all stand to win. [Off Wing Opinion]
- If you can never get enough of the feel-good story that is Brian Pothier's comeback, here's another re-telling. [NHL.com]
- To no one's surprise, Alex Ovechkin is skating on a line with Alexander Semin and Sergei Fedorov at Russia's Olympic Camp... and goofing around [Alex Ovetjkin]
- AO won't be cookin' in NYC after all (great short interview, btw, with a killer punchline). [Alex Ovetjkin]
- Mike Green continues to be the only player on earth not to get the slightest pass for playing hurt/sick in the playoffs, "[b]ut don't forget his 73 points last season." Presumably, though, it's acceptable to forget his 31 goals, plus-24 rating and Norris nomination. [NHL.com]
- LeBrun and Burnside have Green on the outside looking in for Vancouver. [ESPN.com]
- The van is probably the most normal thing about living next to Slapshot. [Nektarios]
- Speaking of rides, another Caps plate. [Simply Sensational]
- Twenty years ago today, former Cap Rick Green retired (for the first time). With 31 goals and 127 assists, he's the team's all-time leader in points by a defenseman named Green, but that's probably not likely to last much longer.

The league website may have covered the team, but the NHLN’s (presumed) concurrent coverage was lacking (repeating the Boudreau and Green segments).

I noticed that myself yesterday. I was excited that I remembered it was “Caps day” only to realize it consisted of a Boudreau interview at 6 and a Green video at 6:30.
That was literally it.

Yeah, pretty lame, as much as I do enjoy “A Day in the Life of Mike Green.”

As far as I’m concerned, I’ll cheerfully kick August out the door.

One of the commenters on the ESPN article said that Green was the last pick D-man from the Canadian press.
I guess that’s why my grammar check gives me an error when I try to put ESPN and hockey together in the same sentence

OT, but ....
After reading that Jersey Foul Bill of Rights article, I am seized with an inordinate temptation to have a jersey made with the name “Jersey Foul” on the back.

If you’re a Penguin fan, would that be “JERSEY FOWL?”

Are Penguins really fowl though? I woulda gone with Ducks there…

Not to mention, you could go after Los Diablos with a “NEW JERSEY FOUL” sweater? Get it? Instead of the “foul” pun you’re really doing a pun on “Jersey”… (If I have to explain it, it’s probably not all that funny, eh?)

Heheheheh. I’m snarking mostly on the whole concept of the “jersey foul”.

Well, who in your team is a young, promising enforcer?
Semin. Have you seen how he fights?
Hilarious.

Green
I guess they feel that Dan Boyle and Niedermayer make Green expendable, which is why I keep seeing guys like Robyn Regher on respective lists, but I just find that hard to wrap my head around. I don’t think there would be any question of taking him if they were playing on international ice.
Maybe its partly because I feel Bouwmeester is overrated.

If you read the Pronger article, he says Babcock and co have emphasized skating and breakout passes.

In a way, I hope Mike doesn’t make the team. A pissed-off Green with something to prove and a gigantic chip on his shoulder can only be good for the Caps.

I hope he doesn’t make the team because then it will be a heck of a lot easier to root against Canada.

Pothier
If I were to pick a Caps player who I think will exceed all expectations this season, it would be Pothier. It’s funny how when the Caps defense is discussed, Brian rarely gets a mention. Yet I think now that he’s completely recovered from his concussion/eye problems and with a full off-season to train, he’s going to be an important member of the D-corp. Word from Kettler is that he’s been training like a beast and looks really, really good. If he plays in the second pairing and gets some PP time, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 10-15 goal, 30-40 point season.

Same with Theo and history has show his contract years have always been his best.

I think it’s a lot more than that in Pothier’s case, but it certainly doesn’t hurt

Myth. Theo hasn’t had an above-average season since the lockout. Even his contract year before we signed him was mediocre.

Not quite sure where the myth is. I never commented on the quality of his contract seasons, just that they were always his best. And the numbers support that. In 2000-01 with Montreal, Theo’s stats were:
20 Wins-.909 save%- 2.57GAA
In his contract year of 2001-02, his numbers were:
30 Wins-.931 save%- 2.11GAA
And then the following year, his numbers were:
20 Wins-.908 Save - 2.90GAA
After he was traded to Colorado, his stat line in the year before his contarct year was:
13 Wins-.891 Save-3.26GAA
And in his contract year, his numbers were:
28 Wins-.910 Save%-2.44GAA
The next year with the Caps, his stats were:
32 Wins-.900 Save%-2.87GAA
Following that trend, I’d expect this season to be a marked improvement over last year’s for Theo.
by b.orr4 on Aug 31, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Meh. I’m not buying it. The .910 only looks like a “contract year number” because it followed a garbage .891; it’s still just average goaltending. When I think “contract year numbers” I think of something that is exceptional, or at least above average. The bottom line is Theo hasn’t had an above-average year since the lockout. Fine, his latest contract year was less medicore, more average, than his non-contract years, but even in that COL year he was extremely inconsistent. He basically did the same thing he did with the Caps last year, except he actually played one good round of playoff hockey. I wouldn’t bank on anything higher than a .910 from Theo again.

Lowering his GAA from .900 to .910 may not seem like much to you, but if he had done that last year he would have allowed 16 less goals and dropped his GAA from 2.87 to 2.57. I could be wrong but I’m guessing that probably translates into a few more wins. Buy or not buy it, I don’t care but the stats don’t lie. He plays better in his contract year than a non-contract year and this is his contract year. And if he lets in 16 less goals and wins 3-4 more games, to me that’s a good thing.

14 goalies played in at least 57 games last year. Theodore had the 13th best GAA among them (only Ilya Bryzgalov had worse). Eight of the 13 other than Theodore had GAA’s of 2.57 or better. Six of them won more games than Theodore (32). But here’s the thing. I am big on the idea that shots faced matters. Over time, shot quality (I’m betting) evens out, even for teams who have a tendency to play a high-risk style. And there is not much difference between a .900 save percentage and one with a .910 save percentage. But of the 14 goalies who played in at least 57 games (as did Theodore), Theodore faced the 11th highest number of shots-per-60 minutes. Given the Caps’ philosophy of attack-attack-attack, that’s not a bad place. It suggests to me that the shortcomings were more Theodore’s than his teammates. He has to improve this year (or Varlamov needs a Calder Trophy season) for the Caps to advance further.

It still doesn’t address his inconsistency. He was inconsistent with COL in his K year. Even if his numbers averaged out to be moderately better he was streaky and unable to maintain his level of play over the course of a full year. You see an increase in play because of those numbers, I see mediocre numbers every year since the lockout. Does you have confidence that Theo is going to be there for us when we need him just because it’s a K year? I don’t.

Mike Green isn’t getting a pass because we still don’t know what he was hurt/sick/etc. with. In the absence of data people are assuming he simply ran out of gas.

yeah, why is that, do you think? i understand the silence while still playing, but why would it not be brought out after the fact? we sure found out enought about how banged up the rest of the blue line was immediately upon the conclusion of the playoffs. it seems like 52’s reputation suffers as a result. after 31 goals and a run at the norris…?!

How about Slapshot’s predecessor, “Winger?”
My brother and I were at the game where they “unveiled” Winger for the first time, and after all the buildup when they said his name for the first time ever in public, both of us heard “Queer”

If the Canadians are going to leave Green off their Olympic team, I’ll have no reason to root for Canada. Canada’s main people will include several Flyers (i.e. Pronger, Richards, Carter) and a certain Penguin we all know and dislike (Crosby).
So I will root for Russia against Canada.
BTW, there’s been plenty of documentation for the fact that Green was both injured and sick during the playoffs.

I’m rooting for Sweden first, then Russia. Canada’s a distant fourth (after the USA), perhaps even fifth (after Finland) or sixth (after the Czechs). I love me some Mike Green and Iginla, but I can’t really get behind anyone else. Their goalies in particular annoy me.
