Ranking the Capitals: #3
In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals, from Ovechkin to, well, we'll see. The criteria is simple: who is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players, who would it be (or who would have the most value in trade as of right now)? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll.
Welcome Nicklas Backstrom to the list, and Mike Knuble to the poll...
- Alex Ovechkin
- Nicklas Backstrom

Well this makes me feel silly. After much consideration I chose Green over Backstrom. So I’ve now voted for Green as #2 and #3. Awesome. Semin is/was a 3a for me.
It shouldn’t make you feel silly at all – you have had Green as the most valuable guy remaining twice in a row, which is consistent. As we get further along, I’m sure folks will be voting for a guy for several polls in a row, hopefully lobbying for their pick in the comments and generating good discussion.

I’m going to start writing in a vote for Matt Bradley right now.

I’ve voted for him twice in a row now too. We even had some talks towards the end of the season about how Mike Green might be even more important to the team than Ovechkin. I though he was a shoe-in for the #2. I guess the playoffs really tainted him for some people.
I’m with you. Also see Myrtle’s post that shows Green may have been the most valuable player in the league by certain metrics.

Btw, how many votes and what kind of lead do y’all think is sufficient to move on to the next poll? I don’t want to call Florida for Gore here, but no point in leaving these things open once they’re clearly decided. I was thinking 100+ votes and a 10% lead would be a decent standard. Thoughts?

That’s about right, or rolling it every 24 regardless may be easier from a Rinkmaster/admin end kind of thing.

Yeah, it’ll be a combo of the two. I’m dying to get through these first four obvious ones and get to some real debatin’.

Normally I agree with BP, do one per day. But today I think you can make an exception. I think poll 3 will be done by lunch and you can probably dispose of poll 4 this evening, opening up the debates tomorrow.
Need some suggestions for adds…

Steckel and Morrison squared might be the next logical ones (in my energy drink marinaded mind, anyway).

In terms of value in the most literal sense, might want to add the potential 20+-goal sub-1mil guy in Flash (should make for some entertaining discussions, if nothing else).
Otherwise Steckel and/or Theodore (again, entertaining discussions… besides, the starting goalie is always going to be one of the team’s most important players).
Agree. With Green Semin coming out (insert laugh track) at #3 and #4, time to insert Theo and Steckel.
For some reason, seeing Fehr on the poll so early has bugged the shit out of me for two days. Don’t know why. So, as Paul McCartney crooned to me on Saturday night, I’ll just “Let it be, let it be…..”
Steckel and Theo catch my eye as missing.
We all whined so much about the team not having a 2C for weeks, so I think B. Morrison should go up there sooner rather than later.
Boyd Gordon plays a crucial, if limited, role on the team.
I’m expecting Pothier to play an important role this year.
S. Morrisonn has played a ton of minutes the last couple of years, often on the top pairing. His results are inconsistent, but you can’t argue with the importance of the minutes he’s played at times.

Is it really relevant to include the free agent signings? The only basis for evaluation is their play not for the Caps.
I think it makes sense. They are Caps property, so it makes sense to me to assess their value to the Caps. The fact that we don’t know how well they will gel with the team is just something that affects their value.
by Gould Old Days on Aug 3, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure it’s fair – these guys have value to the Caps despite not having yet played a minute for them.

OK, I’ll buy that, but when I’m voting, I’m likely to put them way down low, with obvious exceptions for anyone who clearly has NO value. Not naming any names, of course…… (and I doubt that anyone has zero value, just not very much)
To each her own. I tend to think BMo has a lot more value than people might think, for many of the reasons I outlined around the time of his signing. Probably more value to the Caps, though, than to just about anyone else, given their gaping 2C hole otherwise.

Hey JP, I remember you defined the question in the last poll. Might be a good idea to put that definition up above the poll in each of the future ones just so we have it to refer to (no need to do it here, since Green wins under any definition).
by Gould Old Days on Aug 3, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it’s definied in the italics, no? If not, I’m not sure what you’re ref’g to.

Voted Green for number 2, so he obviously gets the nod at number 3. I still think the “Green element” is something other teams simply do not have, which is why I personally placed him above Backstrom (or Semin, et al), but I’m fine with Backie at #2 and Green at #3.

How come the percentages don’t add up to 100?
I think a 10% lead might be too small to close the poll. A 70% lead on the other hand…
85.333 + 1.333 + 13.333 = 100. But they round each of the .333 down
by Gould Old Days on Aug 3, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Depends on sample size. 10% out of 150 should be good. But 10% from ten is not

I’m sure there are those eagerly anticipating the chance to ask this question…
Can we give negative votes to Schultz?
If you've read this far...seek help.
As much as I love Semin’s play, this one goes to Green.
Isn’t it too early to throw Knuble into the mix? Has he even tried on a jersey yet? Does he have a number?
Does he have a number?
Your comment was probably sarcasm, but just in case yes Knuble is going to be #22
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

That’s what is interesting about this whole ranking debate. While you might wonder if Knuble (#22 sweater) should even be ranked yet, I think he is “more valuable” than many of the names on the current poll above; specifically, Alzner, Carlson, Fehr, and Schultz.
Seconded.
Careful there. Seconding is dangerously close to Firsting, which gets you banned around here…
