Friday Caps Clips: The Pride of Wawota
Your savory breakfast links:
- Wawota, Sakatchewan is a small town (591 people) known for its "unusual collection of fire hydrants, painted to resemble various people and cartoon characters," and for its most famous resident, the Pride of Wawota... Brooks Laich. [Wawota.com via FanShot]
- David Steckel was fifth in the NHL in faceoff percentage last year despite playing "all of last season with a finger that was damaged so badly he couldn't bend it. Not even a little bit." Off-season surgery has fixed that; he may never lose another draw. [Capitals Insider]
- And so it's settled - Alex Ovechkin is D.C.'s most
technology-backedpopular athlete. [D.C. Sports Bog] - He's also the League's 10th-best interview. [The Sporting News]
- McKeen's predicts another Art Ross for AO. [From the Rink]
- During last night's Red/White Scrimmage, Ryan Smyth "hammered Mike Green" twice. Dick. [ESPN.com]
- Brendan Morrison is looking forward to playing with AO. No way. [The Province]
- In case opponents aren't looking up at the rafters, the Bears have an on-ice reminder of who they are and what they've accomplished. Awesome. [@banginpanger]
- Joel Broda is waiting... and waiting... for a pro contract. [Prince Albert Daily Herald]
- Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) forward Ryan Jasinsky has been invited to rookie camp and will look to make an impression. Reading up on him, the undrafted 19-year-old seems like the impression-making type. [YoungstownPhantoms.com]
- From the "I'm not dead yet" file, Jason Allison has been invited to Leafs camp next month. [Globe and Mail]
- And another from that same file - the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL) have signed... wait for it... Sasha Pokulok. [KERO]
- More on Dan Dunn's near future. [St. Cloud Times]
- Finally, Happy 60th birthday to original Cap Murray Anderson, who had no goals, one assist and a minus-40 rating in forty games for the 1974-75 Caps. Of note, Anderson was the first player in franchise history to wear the number eight. I wonder who the last will be.

I can’t say I’ve read/heard an interview with Exelby or Maltby, but I’d maybe throw Aaron Ward in that interview group also.

If we are allowing coaches, Paul Maurice should be on the list. He had some surprisingly good lines during the playoffs this year.

It’s worth noting Jasinsky is originally from the Richmond area and played with the Richmond Royals.

Jasinsky, and his stepfather, showed up at a pickup session down here in Chesapeake. I spoke to them both for a while, and was pretty excited when they mentioned that Ryan was invited to rookie camp. Seemed like a good kid with a lot of skill. Didn’t realize he was a fighter until he and his stepfather (about 6’3" 230) dropped the gloves and started going at it. They looked like they were actually fighting and the stepfather came away with a bloddy lip. Afterwards, I asked “What was that all about?”, stepfather (obviously, I can’t remember his name) says, “Oh, we were just practicing…Ryan’s a fighter.”
I told s.f. that I went to developmental camp last month, he immediately asked “any fights, anyone drop ‘em, wasn’t there a 6’8” guy there, did he fight anyone?" basically, does Ryan have any competition?. I told him no fights that i was aware of, and the 6’8" guy ended up getting moved to forward.
I told them both I’d look for them at rookie camp if I could make it, and they were off, back to Richmond…both were really nice guys.

For those of us that have been in DC for a while, the thought that a Cap would be the most popular athlete in DC is a bit mind-boggling. Although some media outlets **cough**wtem**cough** still haven’t woken up and smelled the coffee, the fact that Ovechkin is the dominant athlete in town signifies just how far DC has come in terms of becoming a real sports city and not just a Redskins town. Pro football and the Skins are still king in Washington but if/when the Caps win a Cup, I could see them at least challenging for that title.

Maybe for a year or two in terms of overall ‘buzz’ but as soon as the Redskins manage to do something halfway decent they’ll be the unquestioned leaders. I mean, heck, the team makes the playoffs and the whole front page of the Post sports section is devoted to it.
by David M. Getz on Aug 28, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
fortunately, I don’t see the Skins making the playoffs this year.

Go Walt-less Seahawks! Or not…
Yeah, I think we’d be kidding ourselves that ANY other local team could out-swoon the DC citizenry more than the Redskins can. AO would have to establish a serious dynasty (3+ Cup parades down Constitution) in order to even make a dent. It’s not like the ‘78 Bullets team completely changed the sports landscape around here for any more fans than we’d see if the Caps pulled off one Cup victory? Right?

WTEM? ehhh- I can’t listen to them. I can’t even listen them. No way would I listen to snyder’s radio either (and I’m a skins fan). But I have tried the new WJFK – not too bad so far.
by vt caps fan on Aug 28, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
WTEM is a 4-letter word to me. They rip on hockey for 10 months out of the year, and then suddenly have a WWE Change of Heart around the playoffs when they can’t ignore the water cooler chatter about our boys. I’d feel less insulted if they just didn’t even bother TRYING to sound intelligent about our game…
Is there any way we can add a filter to Japer’s that forbids the use of these 4 letters? LOL

Eh, it’s okay. I run it in the background most of the day and find it’s easy to tune out. Their biggest problem is giving everyone four hour shifts. Maybe it’s cheaper because you have fewer salaries, but it’s a lot of time to fill.
I’m sure it’s anathema to many here, but in spite of his woeful lack of hockey knowledge, I like Mike Wise. Snark rules.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
by J.P. on Aug 28, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I still think the simplest solution is a google doc (word processing or spreadsheet) that is viewable by anyone, but that can only be edited by a limited set of people. If you have tickets to sell, you ask JP for editing rights to the document and you post the info. Anyone who wants to buy checks the document to see what’s available, and uses the contact info listed in the document to contact the seller directly.
It’s simple for JP — all he has to do is decide who gets editing privileges in the document. It’s simple for buyers and sellers. And if anyone pulls any shenanigans, JP can revoke their editing rights to the document. As long as it’s clear that strict “seller beware” and “buyer beware” rules apply, and that JP isn’t warranting anything, then there’s no more risk to anyone than there is in any other internet transaction.

That sounds like a lot of extra work for JP. If everyone wants to do this why don’t we just make a group\blog\etc and just take it off the rink.
by zephyr on Aug 28, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. Even just using a basic message board system and have one thread per game. So everyone who wants to sell their tickets to, say, Jan 15 (I’m just making this up), posts what tickets they have and how much they would like for them. Then people can private message or whatever the seller and strike a deal.

How about something like linked in? Membership can be restricted, and the only up front work, I think, is to limit members to registered users here. That would require someone with access to that information to manage it, but that’s it.
by gfcaps fan on Aug 28, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So Yahoo, Facebook, or LinkedIn? What would people prefer?
My vote goes to Facebook because I assume everyone here already has one and knows how to use it. Plus I think the transparency provided by FB’s use of people’s real names instead of usernames is a good thing.

linkedin is a bad idea for something like this. A facebook group would be good if everyone has an account.
by zephyr on Aug 28, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You assume incorrectly :) But this tckt service you propose would be good incentive to get a Facebook page. Wouldn’t a Yahoo message board be simpler?

I can set it up and make it look all Capitals like. All users that registered would have to be approved through email by me which would be a pain to start off with but at least we would know they were all Rink people.

by gfcaps fan on Aug 28, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Being able to go into any of the forums would require registration so it’s as safe as only people from the rink will have membership. My recommendation would be to do all contact info sharing etc over private messaging\email though.

If JP is OK with me making a fan post\fan shot on it I’ll get the board working correctly and then make one. I think the easiest thing to do is whoever registers uses the same name as they do here.
I\appointed moderators would then just approve new memberships.
It shouldn’t be too hard after the initial sign-ups.
