Ranking the Capitals: #25
In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals, from Ovechkin to, well, we'll see (only players under contract will be considered). The criteria is simple: who at this moment is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players - because of what he brings on the ice or off it, his upside, what he could fetch in trade, and so on - who would it be? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll. [Note: previous "Ranking the Capitals" posts can be found here."]

Can we add Niles Crane to the list next?
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Speaking of which, the next guy on the list ought to be:

Now that I think about it, when we’re done this exercise, I’d love to look at the system behind it.. when someone was put on the list, when they were voted off and onto the order, and how many rounds/votes/etc each person was there before hitting the list.

For next on the list it could go a few ways. If you go by trade value I think it’s probably Godfrey because he has the pedigree and there is always a market for an offensive dman with a big shot. If you go by who is most likely to make the NHL with the Caps I think it’s probably Dovgan at this point because he plays a style that is distinct from the other cornerstone D in the system. If you go by who is the most awesome it’s Kyle Wilson, hands down. But I’m going to say that Giroux should be next on the list… because of what he brings to Hershey.
None of the guys left are realistically going to do anything for the big club; but Giroux guarantees that the Bears will score, and he takes a lot of pressure off of the offensive prospects for the Caps. I really think that playing in meaningful games is important at any level and I think the young Caps benefited from playing on those Calder Cup runs. There are a ton of young guys ready to get some ice time in Hershey, but they wouldn’t be competitive alone. Giroux and the other AHL vets ensure that the Bears will be a playoff caliber team, and give the prospects an opportunity to play those important games.

That’s a very interesting argument for a player’s value, in that you’re saying he has a lot of it, but not with the Caps.
Marmalade! I like the analysis. +1.

Thanks. I was expecting a little more push back on that point of view but I’ll definitely take the agreement.

For what it’s worth, I do disagree that “None of the guys left are realistically going to do anything for the big club”. Seems way too early to say that. Most likely, the case is that most of them won’t – but you never know.

“Realistically” serves the same purpose as the qualifiers you suggest. Yes, you never know what’s going to happen, but looking at the rest of the guys that have Caps contracts but aren’t already on the list I have a hard time identifying anyone that has upside beyond a very average 4th line grinder; and most of the guys are a reach just to get that far. I think Godfrey probably has the most skill left but he hasn’t lived up to his billing, IMO. I think this is a real big year for him; he needs to stay in Hershey and show a more well rounded game.

If Godfrey is playing for Washington this year, we’ve got bigger issues than his own performance. We’re probably signing at least two free-agent trauma surgeons to help with the locker room full of injured players.

Gettin’ ready to lose a faceoff…

Honestly though, I’m torn between who’s left, and while I am a vocal Juice supporter, I was surprised to see him up here berfore CBo, Clark and Big John.
Until recently, we didn’t have a single tough guy up there aside from #1. Therefore I’m feeling compelled to toss Cap’n on there. Why not Big John? Well, I can’t stand D-men who fight, as it tires out the rest of your squad when you are in the box for 5 min. Cap’n will drop them willingly and brings a voice to the locker room that hopefully this team is ready to listen to.
Big John’s my next vote. C-Bo was this round, in my opinion.

Erskine for me. He adds toughness and can drop the gloves, two things which make him more valuable to this team than most other NHL teams.
I think I missed the party at the Rink where they served the Bouque Kool-Aid, I really don’t see him as amounting to anything much in the NHL.
As for the Captain, the 06/07 model would be in the top 10. But until we see a little healthy production, I think he’s not worth that much to us, especially on that bear of a contract
I’ve noticed Erskine voters usually come out later in the day. How have I noticed? Because I’ve voted for him at least five times in a row now.

Is this man compensating?
