Pick Em: Home Game Opening Videos
We all know how Ted (and presumably other members of the Capitals organization) like to browse the various Caps blogs to keep their fingers on the pulse of Caps nation, so I figured we could use some time during the dead of the offseason to debate the merits and and downfalls of recent home game video openers. Maybe the marketing and in game entertainment team will take our thoughts into account in their plans for 09-10, maybe they don't, but either way this gives us something Capitals related to waste spend our time discussing.
06-07 Pre Trade Deadline
Intense music. A bit too much on the slow motion walking for my taste but a pretty solid video overall
07-08 Original Opening Video
This one was basically a movie trailer without the voice over. And was perhaps the last time Michael Nylander was featured in anything promotionally related.
07-08 Foo Fighters Intro
If I am not mistaken, this video made its debut shortly after Ovechkin signed his long term contract in January. The video even includes a mid season highlight of Mike Green's overtime winner against the Rangers on December 2, 2007.
08-09 Rock The Red Intro
This one grew on me as the season went on. It was cool how the Caps had an open invitation to Caps fans to participate as extras in the filming of this video, but it certainly had its drawbacks (emo makeup anyone?).
I did my best to find the old Ron Wilson/Adam Oates mission impossible themed intro but had no success. As I recall, that intro had mission impossible style music, Oates stepping out of a limo and meeting Ron Wilson somewhere that looked like a mission control center, and ended with Oates' sunglasses exploding as he tossed them. The production value was impressive, but didn't exactly scream "hockey game" to me.
So which of the above videos did you like best? What would you like to see from this year's video?

Thanks guys.
Of the videos above, I liked the Foo Fighter one best. Had a great combination of “energy” music and great highlights. Every time that song comes on the radio, i hear Steve Kolbe’s voice kick in with the call of the Mike Green OT winner.

Yep, exactly this. The opening, the tempo throughout, the call… it’s just right IMO.
Also only having it for half a season probably made it harder to get tired of, and the fact that it replaced probably the worst opening I’ve seen for a hockey team would have made it a hit immediately.
… plus the hometown band tie-in (aren’t the Foos from Alexandria?)

According to Wikipedia, the band was originated in Seattle. Dave Grohl did start out in the DC area, though, so that’s probably what you’re going for.

I love the Foos, and that song in particular. I crack it up on the iPod some everyone on the metro can share in the Foo Fighters and associated Capitals awesomeness.
Dave Grohl did all the instruments on the first album. When it became a success, he and the record label put together a band. They’re not really “from” anywhere. Dave, however, is sometimes spotted in random places like an Arlington Staples when he’s visiting his mother. Foos used to play un-announced shows at (9:30 club way back in the day. Good times.
I LOVE foos.

yeah the emo makeup in this years intro pretty much ended it (although i did like the donald working “security” for the band)
the foo fighters got my vote
yeah, the makeup was a bit much, but i really liked the concept – creative and very different… brash being security was hilarious.
I’m kinda partial to the Rock-The-Red video. Being from a live music background and seeing first hand how people react to whom they consider “rock stars” it’s very fitting that they used that theme; seeing how the team went from (using this term loosely) nobodies, to rock-stars in mid/late season run to the playoffs and the team just skyrocketed up the “charts” so-to-speak.
The whole make-up debate I can understand from most people. It’s hard to really get into that sorta thing for a lot of people… but when you’re a rock star, you can do anything (pretty much) and get away with it. I thought it was fun… and really cemented the image.
I love the foo video, but I’m partial to the most recent one.
on a side note… my favorite part of last season was “Capitals vs. Rangers/Penguins” “Game #” at the end of the intro video. THAT gave me goosebumps. After a great pump-up song, that black background, with the silence and everything, and the dark arena, with red lights everwhere… then “POW” the lights came up…. I was literally out of control.
Considering I still get goosebumps and want to start bodychecking people whenever I hear The Pretender, it goes to the Foo Fighters.

Yep
I can’t help but get goosebumps every time I hear the song; it will forever be linked in my mind to the magical March/April push to make the playoffs. If I’m not mistaken, it was the intro to the third period, not the opening to the game, though.

it was the regular season game opener. I can only speak for Game 1 on the playoffs because that was the only one I attended, but they had a different song and video for the opener that night, and rolled out Foo Fighters to open the 3rd period. I remember being rather “WTF?!” when it wasn’t the Foo video kicking off the night.
Voted for Rock the Red...
…Although the Mission: Impossible video was cook, with Coach Wilson driving the big limo through DC, Sylvain Cote handing off the briefcase to the person in back (Oates, Kolzig, Halpern or Klee, depending on the night). The only thing I did’t like about the M:I video was they changed the text on the “Your Misson”. It initially had the opponents logo blinking with the word “Destroy” underneath it. They changed it to “Defeat”.
Destroy has so much more panache`.
The playoff addition to it was awesome too, with the initial production of the brief case being handed off to a helicopter, and then the guy pulls of the mask (very much an M:I thing) and it’s Ted. :)
Also left out was the “Minority Report” style video with Cassidy moving the items around on the glass, and the players stepping from the rink glass to the the ice.
One that I really didn’t like was the “video game”. I still remember one night when the “Select Team” came up for the lady to pick and someone behind me yelled “Pick Detroit!”, and another one said “No, Colorado!” An amusing moment, but not a great video. Of course, they brought the same lady back for the 30th anniversary, and that video became harder and harder to watch as the fire sale went on….
Let's go Caps!

I’ve been going to these games for more than half my life (this is my 25th year as a STH, and I’m 46). I still remember the first entrance “video” if you want to call it that which was the computer animated eagle screaming from the top of the Washington Monument dropping the puck into a “Rink” that was formed on the Mall, with the theme from “Mortal Kombat” blaring.

Loved, loved, LOVED the Mission Impossible intro. I had totally forgoten about the addition to it in the playoffs (probably cos they were one and done….and was that the “Burn the Floor” year?) but I haven’t liked anything as much since. The Foo Fighters intro is probably my favorite in more recent memory though.
I also hope they never, ever skate around holding flash lights while Wes gives a sort of “in the beginning” speech like they did a few years ago on opening night (Halpern’s last season maybe?). That was was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen at a Caps game (if anyone remembers what I’m talking about).
Another favorite from the Ron Wilson era is the “Crazy Ron” commercial they used to play at the arena. Wilson screaming and throwing the snowball at the end never failed to make laugh.
I think a mix of the Rock the Red, which seemed to focus more on the players’ personalities and the fan interactions, with the Foo Fighters, which focused more on the actual playing, would be a good video. I especially like the cut to the announcer during the Green goal – the change re-focused my attention. I’m also a fan of the ending with everyone surrounding the goalie – that would be a good way to end any video done this year (although I could see a problem as to which goalie to pick since they’ll likely be splitting games).
That being said, I had to vote for the ‘06-’07 out of habit of voting for anything associated with Rob Zombie.
Side note: if they did another Rock the Red, wouldn’t Semin have to replace Green as the drummer?
by MB_10 on Aug 26, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
They could film different versions with different goalies, and just pop in the appropriate tape. For giggles, they could do one with Leonhardt.
IS PAЯTY NOW
True on the different versions – didn’t think about that. The Leonhardt idea would be great! I could even see a “blooper” type one with Leonhardt where the team just skates by him and he’s got his arms out and then Varly and Jose come skate off with him patting him on the back.
/way too much time thinking about this now
Only if they use bongos…

Foo fighters for me..
Folks have already listed why it’s a success.
I guess second place goes to last season’s video. Personally, I’m not a big fan of it at all. it seems so excessively fake – perhaps because I watched the behind the scenes videos etc, but something is just “off” about it… and I think I can pin it down to one part.
0:15.. the car starts rolling in and who are we greeted by? 0:19.. None other than an emotionless Theodore, Laich & Backstrom, likely regretting showing up for this video.

This moment ruins the entire video for me. Sorry.
Another way to look at it: I was tired of the 08-09 video after about 3 games. I still love watching the Foo.
Entirely subjective, but The Pretender kicked last year’s song to the curb. They must be going for that younger crowd I hear so much about (and from eyeballing the demographic at the arena, this wasn’t a bad plan to try and execute). The video could be better than 2001: A Space Odyssey but if the accompanying music is stale and not motivating, the video is pointless.
I was usually in the beer line for this anyways, and I’m nearing 40, so my opinion wasn’t the one Ted & Co. were targetting anyway. Meh…

Its funny because I loved last years song, “Hell Yeah” by Rev Theory, so much better than The Pretender. And Im in that demographic that apparently they were targeting. So really, it worked. That song is still the one song that pumps me up more than anything
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
How old are you? I think The Pretender is a way more intense song than Hell Yeah. That song just feels so contrived and canned to me.
Im 17. Probably a little younger than the target audience, but same music taste
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
yeah, they’re looking a little older. Young professionals with enough disposable income to buy season tix.
But point is the 20’s range of fans went through the 90’s grunge era, and Id say (baring seeming like im generalizing) mostly like the rock. Obviously Pretender is still rock, and dont get me wrong I love the Foo, but I just think Rev Theory hits the younger audience harder.
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
Think about what you just said there. People who grew up in the 90s and probably influenced by those grunge years. Foo Fighters. We all grew up sneaking Nirvana records past our parents, and then snapping up Foo Fighters albums in high school and college. For that late-20s/early-30s (probably childless) set with tons of disposable income, Foo Fighters was an obvious choice.
Fair enough. But I still think that Pretender isnt like older Foo stuff. My Hero, Everlong, and even Best of You is more like them. But to me Pretender was more them trying to conform to mainstream music. Obviously everybody has their own music taste, but I guess you were right about that demographic going after FF
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
I dunno, I was like 8-9 years old at the height of the grunge era and I was never really into it and Nirvana\Soundgarden, etc.
Rev Theory has been around almost as long as the Foo Fighters so it’s not like they are much younger it just took them way longer to get going.
The only difference between the two is the Foos are more of a Alt Rock and Rev is a Alt Metal.
I’d take Avenged Sevenfold, Sevendust and a crap-load of other bands over Rev Theory personally.
I’m newly 24 though so I’m sort of mashed in the middle of a lot of music. I like whatever as long as it’s good.

I still get chills every time I hear “The Pretender.” That video was freaking awesome. As far as the Rock the Red goes, I like the song, but the video itself is kinda meh. The rockstar thing just didn’t pump me up… I guess it wasn’t dramatic enough. And yeah, the makeup sucked.
And I know it’s not part of this discussion, but as far as intro videos go, this one takes the cake in my book. The song is so appropriate, and Joe B.’s call at the end also makes me shiver.
by Murshawursha on Aug 27, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Yeah, that is a winner. Just because the video screams hockey and pumps you up. Lyrics are appropriate, but hate the song. Better than the original though. Prefer the edgier music from the earlier intro’s which is weird since I’m a mid 30’s guy who likes most of his music from the 70’s and 80’s. shrug.

That video is awesome. I just re-watched it and I never noticed the part where the lyrics say, “I know you’ve seen my face before” and it cuts to Nylander in old Caps uni then says “but I don’t know if you know who I am anymore” and shows him in the new reds. haha.
Nice catch! And an even more clever production on that one, totally missed it myself…

I get chills every time I hear “The Pretender” as well, and as awesome as the video is, I think the emotional memory associated with the run that team went on in the late winter and early spring has a lot to do with that. For me at least.

I agree. Its a great song anyways, but for Caps fans who rode that wild roller coaster of a season, i think it holds a strangely special place in our hearts. I have visions of being 80 and lying on my deathbed and hearing that song and going “Did I ever tell you young whipper snappers about the 07-08 Capitals season? Yes? Well too bad, I’m gonna tell you again!”
Nonsense, my charts have you making it to at least 92, provided the Singularity doesn’t kick in and adjust some variables.

At first I thought the concept of the rock video was pretty cool, but I gotta admit, every time I saw it the video just seemed “cheesier” than it did the time before.
I really liked this past year’s song selections, not just “Hell Yeah” for the opening montage, but also “Running Wild” and (especially) “Devour” as the 2nd and 3rd periods started….but the parts of the entire concept just started to grow tiresome to me as the season wore on.
Frankly, I’d love it if they developed 2 or 3 themes at a time and kind of shuffled them around, so you wouldn’t get the same videos and songs every single game.
RE: “Rock the Red” in general, I was fully on board when the campaign was introduced prior to the ‘08 playoffs, and didn’t even have a problem with carrying it over into the 08-09 season, but I think it’s time to retire “rock the red” and start a new campaign. For me, “rock the red” will ALWAYS remind me of the crazy end-of-the-season run the team had in the spring of ’08. (For Orioles fans, kinda like “Why Not” and the 1989 season). These are really good memories, even if they did come up short against the Flyers that year. Time to move on.
