Monday Caps Clips: Just Another August Monday
Your savory breakfast links:
- Nicklas Backstrom speaks and Google translates. [VFtCS]
- A bit more from the launch of AO's clothing line, and well worth a click just for the first picture. [Puck Daddy]
- Yet another Caps license plate. [Simply Sensational]
- The Caps are sixth in Illegal Curve's pre-season power rankings. [Illegal Curve]
- More NHL10 ratings for the Caps have leaked, and we seem to have finally found a source of more Schultz love than this site. [Cynamite.de via Caps Message Board]
- Thanks to John at the fabulous Devils blog In Lou We Trust for passing along pictures of the bag in which the NHL Store stuffed the windebreaker he bought. On one side, the back of Alex Ovechkin's jersey, and on the other, a picture of AO with the quote "My shot is not my weapon. My weapon is me." I'd proudly walk the streets of Manhattan carrying that.
- For any of you golfers who want to "Take on the #1 Offense in the NHL," here's your chance. [Old Hickory Golf Club, h/t Caps Message Board]
- Finally, Happy 50th Birthday to Gary Sampson and Happy 36th to Andrew Brunette.

Well we have bunnies come and go in our backyard as they wish, so at this point I’ll say submitted.

Uh, yeah – his checking is higher than Erskine’s, his slap shot power equal to Green’s and his agility is equal to Fehr’s.

I wonder if checking power is based just on weight.

Would that make Nylander a 100 in checking, given that he’s a friggin’ anchor?

And Kyle Wellwood and Martin Brodeur are the most dangerous checkers in the league!

At the risk of asking yet another stupid question, do we have firm dates for training camp yet?
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Last I heard it started September 12…not sure if anyone can back me up on that, though. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
I’d heard that, but Sept 12th is a Saturday. Does that make sense for folks?
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Well, I believe media day is the 11th and camp usually officially starts the day after. I think it usually opens on a weekend, doesn’t it? I don’t know, I can’t remember what I had for breakfast yesterday so…
Hey CC, is that a new avatar? Sweet photo.

Well, it’s my SBN avatar – I started using it here because I didn’t have my blog one on my work computer (yeah, I’m an excellent employee).
And thanks! I love that pic…wish I could take credit for it but I swiped it from my official photographer, better known as the woman behind the amazing www.capsinpictures.com :)
I’ve heard Sept. 12th as well, but I think the rookies show up on the 7th. So hockey is now only two weeks away. Thank God.

A. Freakin’. Men. And the 7th is Labor Day, so if I don’t have to work that day, a trip out to Kettler sounds like it’s in order.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
I’ll definitely be there, that’s for sure. I just moved like 2 blocks away from Kettler and it’s taken all my willpower not to call in sick lately just to go stalk the boys watch the informal practices with the guys who are back in town.
I wish. I live in Owings Mills, up 795, so it’s a solid 1 1/2 hours to Kettler for me. Worth it on a day off, but not something I can do every day.

Same here…I live in Catonsville, and the trip to Kettler sucks (even with Metro). Will try to go again if they have another rookie scrimmage.

Hey, my favorite dive bar is in Catonsville :)
I think SombreroGuy lives somewhere near you, though he’d have to confirm. Maybe we can carpool or something sometime.

yeah I am actually in Canton, but my girlfriend lives in Vienna Va so sometimes I stay down there when I am planning mid week hockey excursions.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

One of George's Mistakes...
…perhaps one of the biggest was letting Brunette go in the 1998 expansion draft. That he’s still playing a regular shift in the NHL 11 years later indicates this was a quality player. If I recall correctly, George didn’t protect Brunette but did protect Craig Berube…
Let's go Caps!
Amen. I don’t think George would approach that situation the same way today. (Salary cap makes a big difference too)

Hmmm. Keeping a “proven” and experienced NHL player at the expense of a young guy “that hasn’t even played many games in a Caps sweater yet.” Would that be akin to keeping Laich and Steckel over Schultz and Carlson? I wouldn’t expect much outrage about that decision ’round these parts.

Right. Berube obviously had more value because he was willing to get punched in the face a lot.

What, you mean the community that’s overwhelmingly voting for Matt Bradley over Chris Bourque and A-Gus in terms of overall value?

Olympic Stadium Game Is Off
The Caps will not be playing the Canadiens at Olympic Stadium on Nov. 28th, a source has confirmed to me. More in a bit.
By Tarik El-Bashir
You know, I didn’t need that one as a breaking news flash headline with no story. Tarik, you can feel free to take your time, talk to your sources, and write your 200 words about how they decided not to do it.
The twitterization of the news has gotten a little bit ridiculous at this point.

Everyone knows if you want quality news coverage you have to turn on your TV. What are you doing still reading the news?
A man must have a code.
Twitterization of news, exhibit two (from puck daddy):
A proposed three-team trade that would have sent Ottawa’s Dany Heatley to San Jose fell through when Sharks captain Patrick Marleau refused to waive his no-trade clause.
That’s it. That’s all there is. Sheesh!

Call me Gabby.
It was a bright cold game in April, and the Young Guns scored 13.
