Thursday Caps Clips: Opening Night on Versus
Your savory breakfast links:
- The League released its National television schedules yesterday (a.k.a. Steve Lepore's Christmas in August), and the Caps are on Versus seven times, CBC five times, TSN or TSN2 a dozen times and NBC up to five times. More importantly, though, is how many Caps games will be blacked out by Versus' exclusive Monday/Tuesday night slot, and the answer seems to be two or three upon a quick glance.
- Alex Ovechkin took a trip to Siberia to visit Alexander Semin recently. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- The Hockey News likes the Eastern Conference's top two regular season teams from last season to finish in those same spots again in 2009-10. [The Hockey News]
- Does Stan Kasten think Ovechkin is a basketball player? [D.C. Sports Bog]
- More on the Stephen Strasburg/Ovechkin comparison. [Cap Centre]
- You'd think that when you're on the cover of a video game they could get your hair color right in the game itself. You'd think wrong. [allehanda.se]
- When David Steckel deflected Brooks Laich's shot past Marc-Andre Fleury to force a Game 7 in the Caps' Eastern Conference Semifinal series with the Pens, Nyjer Morgan was in the house... and rooting for the Pens. [D.C. Sports Bog]
- Speaking of Steckel and Laich, this one's for you, ladies. [@NHL]

Unless they counted wrong, TSN had up 13 appearances on their website.
The basketball was extreme, but it takes more guys in baseball to win than in hockey IMO.
Sorry, reading fail, it was 12.
By the way:
NBC up to four times
…per NBC rules. However, the options are there for five games.

And there’s probably only one (Pens), or maaaybe two (Hawks) that have any hope of being considered.
You mean you think NBC is going to choose Wings/Pens over Caps/Lightning? No way!

The Penguins game is a gimme. The others, probably a cold day in hell. That’s okay with me, I’d rather listen to Joe B and Locker anyway.

Pretty much. Pens @ Caps is an almost definite; otherwise, it’s either Wings / Hawks, Flyers/Rangers or the Nothing But Crosby network.
Suits me – it’s a home game so I don’t have to mute my TV to watch the game sanely.

I third that. Much rather listen to Joe B. and Locker on Centre Ice than deal with Pierre and Milbury on NBC. I realize the whole respect issue, but it is what it is. Win a Cup and/or create a rivalry with someone other than Sid and things will change.
My main TV complaint is how the Canes got done. I would like to watch our rivals on occasion and was hoping I’d be able to watch a national TV game or two so I could turn up the volume.

fourth. JoeB and Locker is the best team out there.

Totally agree. I’ve had the Center Ice package for a number of years so I’ve seen/heard all the announcing teams and in my opinion they are by far the best tandem. Play by play guys around the league have actually improved in recent years. Very few I out and out dislike. However, if anything, color commentator positions are even worse than 4-5 years ago. Only one who has improved that I can think of is Chief down in TB. I can at least stand him now. CBC hiring Crawford just added to the horror last year on HNIC. I avoid Blackhawks games just as I avoid White Sox games and its not for what happens on the field/rink of play. Best of all poor Blues fans have no idea what they are in for this season.
by Carl Putnam on Aug 20, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Far and away the best tandem? I really disagree with that. DAL, SJS, LAK, and ANA all have great broadcast teams. MIN is awesome too, even if the guys sound douchey. And as always, nobody beats Jim (A.K.A. Fuck) Hughson.
Hughson is awesome. I can’t stand CBC games, but Rogers Sportsnet games are great. Dallas has an excellent play-by-play group, too. I enjoyed Buffalo’s team because of how unprofessional it sounded, which just seems right for that market.
I definitely like our guys… they’re perhaps Top 5, certainly Top 10, but not the best.

Does that mean he’s done in Buffalo? I don’t think I watched a single BUF v. BOS game last couple years because regardless of the feed that CI was carrying I knew it was going to be brutal to listen to.
Hahaha.. yeah, NESN is pretty rough. Umm, I don’t think so. I think Rick is staying with the use-every-part-of-the-Buffalo, while his son Mark is switching from pre-game producer with the Sabers to play-by-play for Portland.

LOL. MSG – Buffalo (old Empire)and NESN are truly brutal. Edwards has turned into a total Bruins homer.

Hey now, before he went to run the Blues John Davidson was the best in the business. I haven’t watched much MSG since he left but MSG hasn’t always been a terrible network to watch hockey on. Sure as hell beat FSNY (which aired the NYI) and their nightly analysis by Stan Fischler.
You totally missed my point F&B. Davidson was a good color guy. That was not who I was referring to. I was referring to the Blues new color commentator. Two words – “holy jumping”.
As for the Hockey Maven. He’s like Don Cherry to me. It’s like watching a clown act at a birthday party. You just gotta laugh at the stupidity or you’d drive yourself mad.
I think you meant Rags new color guy. I agree he’s not that great (Joe Michelleti I think) but I was just trying to throw out some support for JD even though he’s been out of the booth for years now. For everything you can say about Don Cherry he is a billion times better than Fischler. Fischler is never entertaining, while Cherry is on occasion. At no point in [his] rambling, incoherent [analysis] [was] [he] even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in [The Rink] is now dumber for having listened to [The Maven]. I award [him] no points, and may God have mercy on [his] soul.
Oh ok, I had to scroll up a bit to catch the Blues part. I missed it at first. I wasn’t really responding to that but point taken. You had plenty of first hand exposure to him.
He’s the guy that shouts “GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALllllll…”
in that voice that sounds like a dying animal, right? I can’t stand him either.

Those two are insufferable. I have to watch NBC games muted.
Oh, how I long for the future, with truly digital audio, where I can adjust the sliders on the volume for the stadium noise up and the announcers down from the comfort of my couch, rather than having all those channels pre-mixed by the time they hit my receiver.

I’ve been thinking of this for a long time. So many times I hear people that don’t really like the game of hockey—or are new to it—and they say: “Hockey is amazing live.” Well, why does it suck on the TV? Because they take the crowd out of it. Hopefully one day I can have a HUGE sound system that actually applies the sound waves of an actual game. Might get a few citations from the authorities, but oh well, it would be well worth it.
Puck is invisible on the near boards. Unless you have HD you can’t see the full zone in the screen. Play moves too fast for cameramen to keep up. If you don’t know what the players are trying to do (i.e. already have an advanced understanding of the game) then it’s hard to understand why a player does what he does; by the time you realize what is happening in a play it’s over. That’s off the top of my head.
I think HD can really help because if you can see the full zone the camera has to move less and then it’s easier to focus on the play. Better color commentary would help explain why players do certain things on certain plays (one example: imagine a player cutting down the wing, sometimes he gains the zone and pulls an escape, sometimes he just dumps the puck and changes, sometimes he tries to throw the puck cross ice to a guy cutting into the zone. Unless you see all the other players on the ice you can’t see that play develop so you’re relatively clueless as to why he made his decision.) A better understanding of the game also allows you to follow the puck by watching the players, not the puck. Body language tells a lot but not until you know what it means. Better Color guys = smarter fans = more passionate fans. That’s my take.
Excellent point F&B. Color guys job in my mind is to teach and explain. Very few can do it well. Part of this is not their fault. Production many times focus too narrowly on one or two themes per game instead of letting the action dictate things.
For those who are new to the sport they could really use help in understanding the small things, especially what to look for on TV. Personally if the color guy isn’t going to add anything then just go with a play by play guy. Best broadcast in baseball involves a one person booth doing both radio/TV.
HD definitely helps. I hate watching in SD now. Part of the reason I finally caved and got DirectTV a couple of months ago. Cox Cable Center Ice package was a joke because it was all in SD.
I still wish they’d find a way to have a camera on both sides of the ice so you could always see the puck when its along the boards. I don’t care a ton about this, but newbies and non puckheads always comment about this issue. I know they tried the experiment of putting camera on top of the boards, but there was a lot of trouble integrating that angle into the production.
Anyone know what happened to the experiment from the mid-to-late 90’s with the glowing puck? I think Fox used it, but then discontinued it for some reason.
Because it was horrible and became an easy joke for hockey and non hockey fans alike.. Most annoying thing ever. My wife, a hockey fan, would walk into LV room see I was watching a game on Fox and would walk right back out. It was like a bad video game graphic.
The comet tail was absurd. If they wanted to do something to show where the puck was I could understand but that tail was cheesy and just made the sport seem like even more of a joke.
Of all the hockey announcers ever, this guy is the only one that matters

I guess it’s a good thing for Caps sports team mismanagement doesn’t go to all the teams in a city, but it would be nice to see the Pens wallowing for 17 years like the Pirates (all tongue and cheek, who wouldn’t like a competitive rivalry? Milledge will be an All-Star someday once he figures it all out (and isn’t forced to play CF).

J.P., I have a six-pack waiting for you if Milledge ever reaches the All-Star Game. No way that guy ever makes it; if he were actually listening to the good advice around him he probably would’ve already turned it around (or at least shown signs of improvement).
The fact that the Nats actually pulled that deal off with a straight face gives me hope for them in 2-3 years (and I sense my six-pack bet will come back at me with that prediction). : ]

It’s looking to me like the new owners of the Nationals have their heads planted firmly outside their rear ends and are taking a few hints from the Caps in the way they’re approaching a team build. So far it’s paying off – the Nats are 17-15 under Riggleman, which while not spectacular is a huge improvement. I think it’ll be interesting to see what they do in the next couple of seasons.

I don’t read enough baseball to really know, but I’m guessing it had to do with the remaining term of the contracts. The Pirates stink, are a small market team, and probably don’t have or won’t spend money. Just my outside impression, baseball experts can correct me.
Acquiring Nyjer and signing Strasburg are probably the two biggest reasons Rizzo is now the full-time GM.

I’m not sure how to feel about that issue of ESPN magazine. If sports magazines need to photo nearly naked bodies to make a profit (I’m looking at you, Sports Illustrated), then just get out of the sports business and sell what makes you money.

My brother the competitive field archer calls that his “stabilizer”. That 12-pack riding on top of his 6-pack should help Ovie focus his center of gravity surely, but won’t help his wind much. And now according to TJs link he’s on his way to Mordovia for some good home cookin’.

Straburg comparisons to Ovechkin make me laugh. A guy who spent his college career pitching in the MWC and who currently has one really good pitch is compared to a kid who at 18 was a sure thing. And I thought people were delusional about the Redskins…
It’s just an easy outlet for a journalist to create a story. Ovechkin and Strasburg are both phenom-first-overall picks, so they must be the same right? It’s all meant to keep both stupid and smart people entertained.

It’s narrative. It’s been about the narrative for years. Neal Gabler wrote about it pretty extensively (I think in Life the Movie), but it’s always been an excellent guiding principle I’ve used when trying to make sense of a news or sports story. It’s not so much about selling it.. good stories sell themselves.. but how do you make it a good story? How do you frame what’s happening in such a contextual light as to make it a compelling narrative?
A Christmas Carol could have been written as a six minute story in which an old guy has a stroke in the middle of the night.

I’ve heard he has three pitches, actually – a plus-plus heater, plus curve and plus change.
While I agree he’s not Ovie, he is undoubtedly a phenomenal pitching prospect.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The curve is ok, but it still needs work to be thrown consistently and his change is pretty weak.
Pitching prospects, even top of the draft first rounders are nowhere close to sure things.

fwiw, gammons thinks strasburg’s change is good enough to be an out pitch. since the college batters couldn’t touch his fast ball and his slurve, he just kept the change-up in the garage.

It looks like its a bit old and musty like a garage. :-) Not that I don’t think his change and/or curve can/will get better. Heck he could be the second coming of Nolan Ryan, but right now he’s not a sure thing. If he learns to be a pitcher not a thrower he could be amazing. Emphasis on could be.

True the torn labrum certainly seemed to derail things but I know a number of folks who were not convinced they should have taken him in the 1st place. They didn’t think he had the make up to be a #1 starter.
In 45 years of MLB draft no pitcher taken #1 overall has been an elite #1 pitcher. benes for a couple of years in San Diego would have been the closest thing. I’d say Bannister was a good selection given his lengthy career. Position players taken #1 have fared better overall, but even there no guarantees.
I think we’ve gotten away from the main point, myself included. :-) The point was you can’t compare a guy like OV who was a gold plated 99.9% lock to a pitcher who has the raw tools, but is not close to being a lock to succeed. The point was that they are notanalogous in my mind.
In that vein can you compare any highly-touted hockey prospect with any highly-touted baseball prospect?
I think if anything goalies and pitchers are analogous. But I don’t watch or follow much baseball anymore.
Yeah, that’s probably fair. Only two goalies have ever been taken 1st overall (likely for that reason), you’re almost as likely to get a useful goalie in the later rounds as you are in the early, they take a long time to mature, they’re possibly the most susceptible to career threatening injuries, and on and on.
Simple answer – no. I never like the sport to sport analogies. Games, skills, etc. are so different. All they do is fill up space for sportswriters and segments on ESPN. It’s hard enough comparing guys in the same sport in different eras.

i’ve liked pretty much every sport i’ve ever tried to understand, and part of the reason i enjoy watching top athletes compete is because i see common personality traits and player roles within teams, common passion between fanbases. whether or not sportswriters are making the comparisons, i’m probably thinking them.

heck, according to Thomas Boswell, no pitched taken in the top 18 picks of the draft since 1965 has ever won 200 games. Taking pitchers with your top pick almost always equals a bust. Ask the Cubs how they feel about that Mark Prior pick (conversely, ask the Twins how thrilled they are that they passed on Prior and went with Joe Mauer)
I’m a Yankees fan. If Joe Mauer doesn’t win the AL MVP this year because they give it to Tex or Jeter, I will personally peg Selig with a dodgeball.
